Compressor and customer service both bad

    Posted
    Snurfle

We should have read the reviews before we bought this. As many others have said, the compressor died after 3 years almost to the day. No warning, no error codes, even the built - in "smart diagnose" says it doesn't detect any errors (so what exactly is the purpose of it?) We just had a Schwann's delivery, and everything in the freezer is ruined, all the melted ice made a mess inside and all over the floor, melted ice cream leaked everywhere... but "no error detected." Customer service is a nightmare... over an hour on the phone, and had to talk to 5 different people, three of whom had such a hard time speaking English that I constantly had to interrupt and ask them to repeat entire phrases and sentences. Two of them hung up mid-call, forcing us to call back and start completely over. Some of them couldn't help until we had the receipt in hand, but after we found it and called back, we were told we didn't need it at all. The earliest they could send someone to look at it was THREE WEEKS, but we were then told it would be one week. After reading through the reviews, it appears it will be another 2-3 weeks after that just to get a replacement compressor. Bottom line: The onboard diagnostics won't catch a compressor failure or a 55 degree temperature in the freezer for 12 hours or more or an ice maker that can't get cold enough to make ice... what exactly is the point of having it then? It appears the compressor is a major problem with these, yet they don't bother to keep any in stock, forcing an additional 2-3 weeks delay. Customer service is very hard to understand, and gives contradictory answers to the same question, depending on who you talk to. 3 weeks bare minimum down time, and they are apparently okay with up to two or more months (3 weeks for the service call, plus 3 weeks for the part, plus however long it takes for a follow up appointment to install the compressor once it shows up - another 3 weeks?) This is a good looking product, but the total failure of it after such a short time, plus the near-total failure of their customer service phone room, plus the failure of the self - diagnostics, and the lack of local support in a timely manner makes this product a very bad purchase.

So I've been looking at this refrigerator for quite sometime. I loved the idea of the opening front separate from opening the whole door with kids, it was the best thing I ever done. I put after school snacks and drinks here eliminating the constant door opening and gaze! It also beeps when the door is left open for to long. what a life saver with kids they are always leaving something open or part way open . The water dispenser is awesome. It has crushed ice and cubed. The tray the drink sits on also can be pulled out for icepitchers. So much space in both sides. Shelves are not readjustable but I've not run into to big of a problem, that I couldn't figure something out. It is awkward at first getting use to not having meat tray and figuring where to put items but you eventually find a new home for it. I have the dark gray and love it. Wipe it down once a day with kids you will be happy not staring at their finger marks. My son 9 says it's the coolest thing. Also to figure out what is wrong with it you call costumer service and you stick your phone up the the icon above the door, when it's opened on refrigerator side and the can tell you the diagnosis. I had the fridge before with the freezer on the bottom and ice maker in refrigerator. And this one I wish I had started with, love the space color and accessibility of all its features. They delivered it from Best Buy and it was quite easy they did a tutorial with me before they left and were kind and helpful with all my questions. The whole process was simple. I ordered it online got the hose for the water line to make it quick and easy at they brought it with them. This was all after Hurricane Harvey. Lowes were on a monthor more back order Costco delayed my delivery twice so I canceled. Low and behold I should of ordered from best buy this whole time no hassle. I would order from them again. They were worth every single penny! Very professional my item was spotless cared for my house and product. Also if your an not use to online shopping this is a great start for a new online shopper for big ticket items. Best Buy you blew my mind after my whirl wind of hassle with others. I definitely learned the lesson come to you first!

The Black Stainless Steel model is really beautiful and impressive in my kitchen. The LG is the quietest operating unit I’ve ever had. As others here have mentioned, the Door in Door will not close and seal with just a push. It requires a conscious effort to make sure it’s securely latched and sealed. And there’s no open-door alarm for that door. The full door, however, requires only a nudge to securely close and latch. Of course, the full refrigerator door and the freezer door both have open-door alarms. I’ve been monitoring the temps with a couple of wireless temperature sensors with a digital temp display on my counter. The freezer does a great job getting as low as -9 to -11 degrees (depending on how you set the controls). The interior of the fridge maintains at about 34-37 degrees (and has been down to 32). The Door in Door, however, holds at about 38-39 degrees. So, if the door is held open or there’s a power failure, there’s very little “wiggle room” before it starts heading above 40 degrees. It’s best to keep foods that do not spoil so quickly or easily in the Door in Door section. The LG Manual states: Recommended types of foods to store in Door-In-Door section are butter, margarine beverages, cream cheese, peanut butter, ketchup, mustard, relish, etc. I was surprised at some of the items, but a little research showed that all of those items are safe above 40 degrees for an extended period. The good news is that the Door in Door temp recovers fairly quickly after getting to 40 or above. And there’s plenty of headroom for 2-Liter drink bottles. The following comments may be unique to my unit as no one else has mentioned them. Both the water switch and the ice switch have “hair triggers”. A slight brush with a hand or cup will activate them and you’ll find unwanted water streaming out or ice falling out. There is also a very slight delay between releasing the switch (either) and the actual cutoff. I can’t release pressure and instantly pull my cup away. After releasing, a momentary pause before moving away prevents water on the floor or unexpected ice falling down. This was not the case with my previous LG unit. The designers at LG must all have 20/20 vision. For anyone with aging eyes and/or a visual contrast problem, the button labels on the control panel are extremely difficult to see. Fortunately, each button is enclosed in an embossed (raised) rectangle. Just look in the manual, memorize the position of the buttons and use the sense of touch to find the button you want. The most used button which switches from cubed to crushed ice is the first button. Easy enough. Nothing is perfect, but the LG is pretty close. The cons I found are easily dealt with.

We originally went to purchase a different fridge but the wife fell in love with this at the store. We thought about buying a fridge with the freezer drawers at the bottom but decided not to and we’re glad we did! The parents have the fridge drawers at the bottom abut it always seems like a pain to take stuff out and repack it. Reminds me of a mini deep freezer. With the sidie-by-side style, It’s just easier to stock and review the freezer. The space seems less but we spend less time digging in it to find what we need. The fridge took up more space than we anticipated. We had 37” W x70” H to work with. The fridge is a snug fit on the width as I forgot to account for the shoe/quarter-round molding and baseboards at the bottom. The cord for the pluf runs out of the rop of the fridge and down the back somthe top bulges outward some in the center. This prevented us from pushing the fridge under the overhead cabinets but was a blessing since the sides were a snug fit. The larger gap on the back helps with the air circulation around the unit. The water dispenser is a little tricky the first few times. With the old fridge, I used the back of my hand to hit the lever. On this fridge, that bad habit means the water missed the cup a few times so be sure to use the cup to activate the water and you”ll be fine. We had to remove one of the shelves on the fridge side to get the a nice row for taller items. We may remove one more as the remaining shelves are stacked a little closer tahn the old fridge but it’s working for now. Ice maker is great and we love the additinal freezer space. Old fridge has the larger ice bin at the top but we didn’t need that much. The door-in-door feature is cool but I recommend you save the $200 - $300 and get the version with the regular door. We can only put a couple of big things in the door (galloon of mlk and a large container of orange juice). It seems we can pur fewer condiment like items in the small shelves. We’re making it work though. The water filter is easily replacable so that’s a big plus. A pretty good fridge overall. If the old fridge wasn”t dying on us, we probably would have checked around a little more before choosing this one. Perhaps the regular door model would have been a little better for us. Ot the fridge for a really good Black Friday deal so we probaly bought more of an upgrade than we needed.

We had to find a refrigerator that would fit through our 1960 30 inch door without all the fan fare of dismantling all the doors. We took out some of the frame to the pocket door and she squeaked right through with no margin for error. Just shy of 29.75". We had to go side by side because the spot she was moving into was at max with the width and depth due to our original poorly laid out kitchen plan. The previous refrigerator was signicantly smaller and you still couldn't fully open the doors without hitting the peninsula/island in front of it. Got it in place, hooked up the water line and primed and purged the system as required. Now we wait for Ice and cold water. Took about a day to get really up and running with ice since we had to dump the first batch. We did see bits of white plastic come out, and after 3 weeks, the water is now starting. Not to taste like new plastic. But we're. Not complaining because we didn't have ice or water before and we're thrilled with that. The door in door is cool. Like other's said make sure you close it securely as it doesn't grip at closing like the main door. Watch it when getting water. Surprised at where it comes out from and it has a hair trigger! Lean in the wrong way and you're wet. Wild that you would have to, but train your unfamiliar guests unless you plan to "shower" them or have water on the floor. Tons of storage, with a catch. If you're a cook and need to store pans or trays of food, move on to the French doors, you might be just shy on a large pan going in deep if you have handles on it. Door will not shut. Don't even think about putting it in sideways, you'll need the French door version. At the top of my list, I also like that the icemaker is built into the door and doesn't take up my valuable shelf space. That was a must. I Wish other manufacturers would Knock it Off with that design element. I didn't mind that I had to switch Brands to get it. Overall, we're quite pleased!

    LTerrible compressors, terrible customer service

    Posted
    George

I purchased on of these 14 moths ago and it worked fine until it didn't. That's when the nightmare started. The compressor died (I have been told that this is common with LG Fridge). I called LG and they said the compressor was covered by warranty but I had to pay for labor. LG gave me the name of the two authorized service reps in this area. I googled both and each had close to a hundred terrible reviews stating that they take weeks to fix the fridge and charge $500 - $1,000 for labor. I called one and he told me that he had to order the parts and it would take 4 - 6 weeks! So, I am supposed to go 4 - 6 weeks without a fridge? LG Had no answer when I contacted them. I am now in a position where I wait a month for a fridge and pay an arm and a leg to have it fixed "under warranty". I had another repairman look at the fridge and he told me that he sees new LG refrigerators with blown compressors on a regular basis. I am forced to buy a brand new fridge after only 14 months. LG clearly could have a better product and, more importantly, competent authorized repair people! Interestingly enough, I was about to buy new LG washer/Dryer and gas range. That will not happen and I will never buy another LG Product again!

Well, so far I like this unit. I won't give it 4 or 5 stars yet because I want to see how it lasts over even a reasonable amount of time. Had it about three months now and no problems. But that seems typical with appliances these days. I must say that I do like the door in door, but what you don't see on the photos of the unit is that it's reasonably difficult (if not impossible) to get to the items "in the door" from inside the refrigerator. There are three narrow shelves on the "door in door" that are good for short juice bottles/packets, beer bottles/cans, and the like and then there are three short shelves and one deep shelf in what I'll call the middle section. The short shelves are good for condiments and what not (no tall bottles) and the deep shelf is obviously intended to be for a gallon milk jug or the taller juice bottles. only one of the short shelves can be accessed when you have the full door open - all the rest have to be accessed from the door-in-door. So there are quite a few time when I have to access both in a single trip to get what I'm after. Another note on all the door-in-door shelving - you cannot modify the height of those shelves so they are of limited use. One other thing I find disappointing about this unit is the lack of options in the main fridge portion. Glass shelves (not non-spill, by the way) fit into channels and, therefore, only allow so many spacing options. Short of pulling out a shelf entirely, there is no good way to arrange a single tall shelf within the unit. And a note on the ice maker, since that's been my problem for a couple years... It works! It's not big, so you can't manage a party on it's output, but for regular life, it's fine. Makes ice reasonably quickly. If ice matters to you, DO NOT buy a Frigidaire. I had two of those in a row that had HORRIBLE ice makers (froze up, stopped making ice). I may rate this better when I've had a chance to make sure that I don't have issues with it in the 12 - 18 month time frame. That's when these seem to break nowadays...

I bought this as a 'scratch-n-dent. All my life I never understood the purpose of a side by side as you cannot fit a pizza in the freezer! Well guess what, ya still can't. But, I realize the having the freezer spaced out (top to bottom) actually allows me to better stack stuff and thereby find it easier. One thing fridge manufacturers need to do is to put bins in freezers to help- which I did take from my old fridge and use in this freezer. This fridge has a door-in-a-door which allow me to keep the things I use more often up front and only open a half door. Things like wine bottles, large bottles of Irish cream and a gallon of milk. Sadly, if you need more tall space, there really is nothing else in the fridge without losing 2 shelves. Example- the tallest you can make an interior shelf inside is 10.5" and a wine bottle uncorked is almost 12"...see the dilemma? So, you are limited in tall items. Regular items??? TONS of room!!! Ice and water on door is nice. I am not an ice person but now I no longer have to listen to guests whine about lack of ice. Sadly the filtered water taste more like chlorine than my tap water and after reading up on this the consensus is the filter that comes with the fridge is a crappy filter. The panel on the door shows the temp of the fridge and freezer and is easily adjustable from the outside. You also have the option of cubes and crushed ice. And I guess there is a lock but until my cats figure out how to open this fridge...I am not going to bother with the lock.

I hate this refrigerator and if I could return it I would. I am kicking myself for not investigating further. It is not the refrigerator we originally went to purchase, and because of our urgency we chose blindly. I liked the look over all, and until you use this refrigerator on a daily bases you wouldn't be aware of the issues. First the water set up in the door is horrible. They placed the tab for the water up front and if you do not place your glass correctly water shoots out everywhere. The ice tab is directly behind and you end up hitting the water and making a mess all over the floor. The shelves are not conveniently positioned, and you are limited on movement and positioning. There is very minimal space for large containers. The front entry door is nice but you must make sure you close it tightly as it does not have the ability to grab and close, so you may think you have closed it only to find out hours later that it has been sitting unlatched. The Stainless is horrible with fingerprints and stains. There isn't enough time in the day with a family our size to clean it. I hate that I can't place a note on the front of the refrigerator. My over all review of this refrigerator would be a zero. I do not recommend it especially for large families.

My old GE refrigerator finally died after 14 years and my oh my have refrigerators changed over the years. We had an internal ice maker and that is about all the trills we had. The old one was a side by side also. So.. about the LG... Very nice unit. Plenty of room for us. We are a family of 2 and the unit is way more than enough space. The little door has become very handy as we put stuff that we get often in those shelves. Needless the say the wife loves it. The filter is easy to get to and replace. My old one was in the back and needed extra work to replace the inline filter. I read reviews that this unit was loud. Mine is fine. Actually quieter than my old GE. Another complaint I read about was the ice maker. Not enough ice. I found that not to be an issue and my wife goes through what I feel is a significant amount of ice during the day. One issue I have is the little door. Although convenient, the latch mechanism is goofy. Unlike the big door that will close mostly on its own, the mini door has to be pushed closed. So if you simply grab some milk and swing it closed with your elbow, well it ain't gonna close. You NEED to go back and push it closed and has to click. My wife says we don't have kids living at home anymore so us responsible adults can handle a little responsibility and make sure the door is closed. ( I guess that was meant for me.). So.. we still have it. Second issue I have is the front door lets you set the temperature but does not display what it currently is at. It would be nice to know the inside temperature. - In a nutshell.. great unit so far. Seems very well made.and if it broke I would probably buy another one.

At first glance, this refrigerator looks like a good value, and does offer some innovation with the double door on the refrigerator side (which lets you access your bottled water and other smaller items without opening the entire refrigerator side). This is one of the things that attracted us to this refrigerator, but there is a "catch" . . . . Literally! You must use care and caution each and everytime you close (and hopefully latch) the door. It's not like a regular door, where you can just "push it" and walk away. You must carefully close and latch the door, each and every time and confirm that it is shut. You must teach all family members, or anyone who would potentially open/close the door of this requirement, or . . . . Guess what? The door won't close, and if unattended over a weekend, all of the food in your refrigerator AND FREEZER will thaw and spoil and you will be throwing out lots of food. Additionally, this smaller water bottle compartment doesn't seem to keep the water bottles as cold as in the main refrigerator compartment, bummer! So it's a trade off. If you like the convenience (and hopefully energy savings) of having a double compartment door, this might be a good choice. Don't expect your water bottles to be very cold, and be sure to teach your family members to get into the habit of checking the outside door for secure closing.

I have really wanted to love this fridge, but there are many things about it that have annoyed me. First off, we decided on a side-by-side because 1) we wanted an ice/water machine, and French door fridges tend to be severely limited in fridge space if it comes with an ice/water machine (we need more fridge space than freezer space since we have a deep freezer); and 2) we had a side-by-side before and were surprised at how pleased we were with it. But...the little annoying things about this one in particular: 1) The door in door feature is designed to be convenient and functional, but it does take away the deli drawer, which I do miss a lot! 2) We're Asians and store various sauces in the fridge (i.e. fish sauce; seasoning sauce, etc...), and unfortunately, as one other customer noted, unless you completely remove a shelf, there is no way to store those standing up. The same can be said for wine bottles. The only solution is to place it in the gallon shelf located in the outside door, but that will take away the space for milk/juice and other drinks one might want handily placed in that location - or you lay it on its side. 3) As others have noted, the door-in-door latch does not shut unless you apply some pressure. That's annoying. So...as I said before, I've wanted to love it but I don't. The Best Buy associate at the store steered us away from the Samsung (slightly more expensive) side-by-side showcase fridge claiming that LG has stood the test of time and produces better appliances (particularly given Samsung's recent issues with their phones and washers). But now...I wonder what what could have been had we gone with the slightly more expensive, slightly larger Samsung...

I was under the gun to replace my refrigerator before leaving on vacation and fortunately I had been doing some looking around. I will say this fridge was one to the units that I had narrowed down to, but not my first choice. Mainly, I bought this one due to availability and delivery. I have to say that so far it has been a very nice fridge. My only complaints are that it is deeper than I would have liked and extends about 6 inches further past the counter than my previous fridge which already protruded past the counter by about 3 inches and the stainless steel finish does not mean a door made of stainless steel. The refrigerator magnets have absolutely zero attraction on the door, which means there will not be any grand kid artwork unless I use tape or command strips. Icemaker capacity is a bit small But I guess I can live with it since the grocery store sells ice for parties and I think the additional freezer space it frees up is worth the trade off. Water dispenser will take a bit of getting accustomed to. I do like this fridge, but just be aware that it does take up additional aisle space.

We had been talking about getting a new refrigerator for some time as the last one we had, the ice maker caught on fire. I don’t want to mention brand names, but I will anyway, it was a Samsung. We needed a refrigerator then and didn’t have a lot of money at the time, but you don’t expect that. If we had not been home our house could have caught on fire. Then, after a few years, not as long as one should last the Samsung quit working altogether. We had looked at LG in the past and were going to spend more money that we did, but again, we were not quite ready to do that so we ended up with this model. We left the temperature set where the factory had set it, but after 48 hours it was not as cold as we prefer, so we set it a little lower and so far, it is very cold. The freezer is working well at the factory setting. We love the door-in-door feature. This makes it very convenient for getting stuff you use a lot. There is plenty of room for now, so far, the biggest “Con” with this model is, NO cheese drawer. All our previous models had them. Not sure why LG did not think this part out. We are having the ice maker hooked up by a plumber and if it works well great, but if there are issues I will revise my review. I am giving this refrigerator four (4) stars for two reasons, lack of a cheese drawer and not sure how the ice maker will function until after it is hooked up. For now, I would recommend this right now if this model fits your needs.

The first fridge that was delivered had a water line that was leaking from under the freezer door. This was replaced by Best Buy within 4 days but the second one couldn't be installed completely due to the lack of knowledge of the delivery personnel that did the installation. Best Buy had to send a special technician to handle this who came in and turned on the water but didn't attache the water filter and test the flow of the water. I had to call LG customer service when I came home late that night and install the water filter. When the water filter was installed and I ran the water at the dispenser, and even \when the cup was taken away, the water didn't stop and kept on spurting through. Called LG and reported this on Friday night and LG was able to get a technician to the house on Saturday. He confirmed that this was a bad refrigerator for the second time. It's Sunday night and I haven't heard from either LG or BestBuy as to what they are planing to do with this model.

My experience up to the point I received the refridgerator was great but that is where it stopped. First off I spent several weeks reading reviews and researching many places. My wife and I choose this model over the French door design and loved the space on the freezer side as well as the door in door. Issues: When it was installed at my home I noticed the light out of the refrigerator side as well as the door alarm beeping 3 times every 30 seconds with door closed. After 26 hrs still not up to temperature 54 degrees and 30 degrees in freezer. No ice yet either but maybe I am helping the temp with the bags of ice I placed in there to help my food from spoiling. I called Best Buy which I also purchased the 5 year plan stated they couldn't help until 24 hrs after delivery call tomorrow which I did and they said sorry again the center is closed on Sunday call LG or geek squad. Geek squad same response as Best Buy and LG setup a service call for 1 week. Best Buy update your systems quicker and why can't geek squad help on Sunday. I had my delivery on Saturday. My suggestion is choose a weekday when Best Buy services are working so someone can help if you have issues. Otherwise plan to buy lots of ice until they reopen like me.

Purchased this refrigerator less than 7 months ago and it will not work at all. In fact before it completely stopped working, there were sparks flying!! LG has the WORST customer service and does not care about its customers. They have sent 2 technicians who cannot repair the unit and they are not wanting to give us a replacement. The representatives do not care that we have 3 small kids including a 6 month old and we are unable to keep any food in the house or store milk and baby needs. They say they will keep sending techs out until it can be repaired. Who wants to buy a fridge that costs this much only for it to be patched- to then break again later. BUYER BEWARE. DO NOT DO IT!!! We had a Samsung previously that worked perfectly and is actually still working well over 8 years later. We only purchased this new one for our brand new house and needed stainless steal as our Samsung was black. I wish we had stayed with Samsung!!

This fridge have being an awesome choice for our home. When my wife and I went to the Best Buy store to check on some fridge, I must confess that I didn't like this one. Mainly because is this 2 doors concept is kind of old (Yes, I was driven through a French door). But my wife made me think about it and we checked it and, turns out to be the most rational choice (for the price, offers way more Gadgets and comfort than a price comparable french door, and it is BIG)... So, hating it a little bit from my side we bought it and I CAN'T BE HAPPIER now... My wife was right (as usual) and this fridge is awesome, it is beautiful, the black stain steel is marvelous and this is a veeeeeeery BIIIIIIIIG fridge... besides, the small access door to the refrigerator's door is very very handy for small items like sauce and bottles of water (or beer, whichever moves you)... Also the water filter is easy to replace in a very convenient and comfortable position (be advise though... at the beginning , the water tastes a little bit "plasticky" but with time the flavor disappear ... or you become use to it not sure lol... but jokes aside, once that disappear, is awesome!!!) We also love the controls of the temperature and ice making and the possibility to block it for the little ones. Totally recommended, this is more fridge that many out there with a better price!

    Solid refrigerator for the money

This refrigerator was selected because it wasn't overly expensive and offered the features we wanted most. Our previous refrigerator did not have filtered water in the door or a working ice maker, so that was a nice feature. We enjoy the ability to obtain our most used items (milk, condiments, etc.) without having to open the full refrigerator door. On the minus side, the water in the door comes out at an angle, and we have sprayed water on the floor multiple times until we learned where the water jet is. The ice in the ice maker has collected above the dispenser gears and failed to come out, and while relatively easy to fix by removing the bin and knocking it down I didn't feel that should have been required of a new refrigerator (less than one month old.) The external door to avoid opening the full refrigerator is nice, but the latching system does not seem like it will hold up long term. Note that there have been no issues with the latch to date, but it seems less robust than I would like to see. Also if you don't close the outer door firmly, it may not latch. Overall, it is an excellent refrigerator for the money. I did not want to spend $3000 or more for the best refrigerators, and this one is a good choice for the $1500 price we paid. Except for the above noted issues, it might have been given 5 stars.

This unit replaces the old Samsung that died without warning a few months after the extended warranty lapsed. (Let that be a lesson to me!) It has some very nice updated features including the small reach through door. That door has some quirks that take some getting used to. You cant push items on the lower shelves too far back or they push the door open and it catches on the inside of the refrigerator with a loud BANG. I would worry about the opportunity for long term damage on this part because the leverage you can put on the door is a lot of force for this plastic part. The variable speed drive inverter compressor is becoming a standard way of reducing energy consumption in a lot of items. The price of these drives has fallen a lot and so we see it here. Under normal conditions it makes the unit quieter. If the doors are left open for a while it ramps up and gets a little louder than the Samsung ever was. Otherwise the space is fairly well laid out. I wish there were more shelf location options though. Having the ice maker completely in the door is a nice touch. I can see the ice and there is no open hole to collect debris that would fall into my glass with the ice. So far we would buy it again.
