    Great earphones with great features

Verdict: The LG Tone Flex HBS-XL7 are great headphones that deliver quality sound, all-day battery, and unmatched convenience. Initial impressions. Removing the earphones from the retail box was easy. I was immediately impressed by the flexibility of the neckband; it can be twisted and flexed to a large extent, leading me to think that it will last longer. I was also surprised about the light weight of the neckband; it looks heavier than it actually is. The whole system is sleek and light, definitely the best-looking neckband-style earphones on the market. Included with the earphones are a USB-C charging cable (only the cable is included, not the plug adapter), two pairs of silicone earpieces, and the instructions. Initial setup. Setting up the earphones was very easy and only took seconds. Upon turning on the neckband by holding the power button for 3 seconds, the neckband vibrates noticeably and a voice prompt in the earbuds indicates that it is ready for pairing. From your smartphone’s Bluetooth menu, select the LG earphones, and the earphones will pair within a few seconds. Using the latest Bluetooth 5.0, these headphones deliver farther wireless range, longer battery, and better sound. Sound. I was initially disappointed with the sound of these earphones when listening to music. I couldn’t hear the details of the music well and I also noticed that the earpieces didn’t fit in my ear well. I decided to change the silicone earpieces to improve the seal with my ears. Changing the silicone pieces was a little tricky (see below for tips), but it resolved my issue. Using the larger silicone pieces and seating the earphones well inside the ear, I was able to get a nice seal between my ears and the earphones to achieve pretty good passive noise cancellation and hear better sound. The sound is rich, overall balanced, and very good for the small size of the earbuds. The sound clarity and definition are good given the size of the earbuds, and when comparing to other options, they compete very well at this price range. One area of improvement would be the bass, I think… but I do like my music with heavier bass, so perhaps this will be perfect for most people Changing the silicone earpieces. First, I tried to just pull the silicone pieces off from the side but they are fitted very tightly to the earbuds and I feared the silicone would rip if I pulled harder. Then, I completely inverted the silicone (see picture) to gently and evenly pull the silicone… and the silicone earpiece came right off. To insert the new silicone piece, I also inverted the silicone to be able to see the silicone slide over the earbud. Convenience. I own a pair of true wireless earbuds, and while I like them very much, I am always worried about dropping them (to their certain destruction). These earphones are incredibly convenient because the neckband allows you to do anything you want without worrying that you will drop and/or lose an earbud. If you need to hear something or someone, you can quickly pull out one or both earbuds and let them hang, or you can use the retractable feature to quickly put them away. I can see now why neckband-style earphones are so popular. They just work! All day and worry free! These will be great for traveling, commuting, or using on the job. Things I like: - The initial setup was a breeze. Subsequent connections are seamless. - The wireless range of these earphones is very good. I was able to get about 30 feet away from the smartphone without losing connection - Worry-free wear! The neckband stays in place around the neck. It is easy to take the earbuds out of your ear quickly and just let the earbuds dangle from the neckband. - Comfort! The neckband is light and the earbuds comfortable. I forgot they were there after a couple minutes. - Taking phone calls was easy and provided good sound quality. The dual microphones mean that the person on the other end can hear you better. - Passive noise cancellation is effective once you achieve a good seal between the silicone earpieces and your ears. The sound is great for the size of the earbuds. - Battery life seems to be excellent, with an advertised 10 hours on a single charge. I used these for a straight five hours and still had plenty of battery left. Upon turning on the power, the earphones indicate the battery level through voice prompt, i.e. “battery level high.” - These earphones offer a very convenient quick recharge feature: 10 min of charging provide 3 hours of listening time. - USB-C charging connector, it makes it easier to charge with the other devices in your home. Things I don’t like - I definitely have concerns over the longevity of the cable that goes from the neckpiece to the earbuds. There is no indication that these might fail early, but it definitely looks like the weakest point of the design. - I tried to use these for running and they are not ideal. The neckband bounces around quite a bit and you can feel every time it lands on your shoulders. On the other hand, these earphones work well for walking or other activities that are not high impact. - Including a pouch for storage would have been nice. - I don’t know if these have an auto-shutoff feature, in case you leave the earphones on by mistake. I couldn’t find anything in the instructions but I guess I will find out soon enough when I forget to turn them off. - Google Assistant integration only. This is unfortunate since a good portion of the smartphone market uses Siri or other smart assistants. I don’t have the google assistant so I couldn’t test this feature. Some other earphones work to integrate all smart assistants so I think LG could have done this as well. Overall, these are fantastic earphones. While there are a few things I didn’t like, I would rate these earphones 4 stars to 4.5 stars. I highly recommend these for anyone looking for easy to use and worry-free Bluetooth earphones with good sound and long battery life.

Best sound quality, despite a few kinks

I must definitely say, the best thing about my LG Tone headset is the sound quality. There is a clear and distinct difference between this one and my last set. It even makes old recordings of mine sound like they were recording yesterday on fine equipment. So some of the best thing about it, I think are: retractable earbuds (this is so cool and convenient!) It has Google assistant software Battery last really long, even with a short charging time I have an Android smartphone, so the Google assistant is extra helpful in that even text messages are read to me aloud. There’s a button I push and Google will read aloud whatever the notification is, although it has been a bit inconsistent with this feature. There’s also an app called “LG Tone & talk” where you can custom and set it even more so what you’re looking for. My only complaint would be that it reads the entire hyperlink if someone sends it. My husband sent me a link to read and article and Google read the entire hyperlink, letter by letter…ugh. I would also like different voice options, but these are just personal preferences. All in all this was a good investment and assuming the kinks will be worked out, I’d definitely recommend.

Up for review are the LG Tone Flex HBS-XL7 Wireless In-Ear Headphones. This is my first pair of LG headphones as well as my first time using a neckband style. Pros: * Extremely sleek and comfortable: These headphones look great and are extremely comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I was able to listen to music and take phone calls throughout the entire work day without developing ear fatigue. The package quotes 10 hours of use and I believe it. The rubber earbud fit my ear perfectly. * Google Assistant: It was fairly easy to set up and only involved restarting the headphones a few times. I am running the latest version of IOS 13.3 on the iPhone 11 Pro Max. First you download the Google Assistant App. Follow the instructions to pair it. If you short click, it tells you the time and if you have any notifications. If you hold the assistant button you can talk and ask questions/give commands. Overall, it is a cool feature to have. * Quality sound: While these are not noise cancelling they do a great job blocking sound due to the snug fit of the earbuds. The highs, mid-range, and bass are great for the price point. LG partnered with Meridian Audio to provide "an exceptional sound experience" which in my opinion is why these have such balanced sound. Lastly, the 32-bit Hi-Fi DAC will upscale lower quality audio files. * Quality microphone: These tout a dual microphone setup to ensure crisp and clear calls. These definitely live up to that statement. When speaking on the phone, I was told I was easy to hear and understand. I did not have trouble hearing the caller. * Fast charging: I think the importance of fast charging speaks for itself. Everyone is on a time crunch and being able to charge our devices quickly is a must. Using USB-C, it can charge 3 hours of use in 10 minutes. Indeterminate: * Materials: These are very flexible which makes me believe they will be quite durable; however, the cords that attach to the earbuds feel thin and fragile. I have not had any issues with them not retracting or the cord breaking/fraying but I wonder how long they will truly last. Overall, I am quite impressed with these headphones. I question I often ask myself is would I buy another LG product in this category (Bluetooth headphones). The answer: Yes! I think LG created a nice product and a competitive price point.

    A Refreshing Attempt

Without being too long winded, I will say that I gave the LG - TONE Flex HBS-XL7 wireless headphones a 4 out of 5 star rating. Pros: Battery Life- It's great! No issues with getting through a complete work day while listening to music and taking phone calls. Even streaming a few YouTube videos will not drain these. Convenience- Another plus is having the earbuds available at any time on your neck. They are retracted when you are not using them, and are just on your neck, out of the way. They do not come off while walking around doing normal activities. Also makes it harder to lose because of the size. Phone Calls- I take around 10 to 20 calls a day for different amounts of times. Not one person told me that they could not hear me, or I sounded garbled or under water. The other caller came through very clearly as well. I will say that the person you are talking with will hear some background voices on phone calls. Your voice will be clear, but it does not filter out all the other noises around you. Connectivity- The LG - TONE Flex HBS-XL7 do pair with two devices at the same time. So if you pause music on one device, you can take a phone call on another one. You just have to pair the headset separately first, and then they will connect to both devices simultaneously. Bluetooth 5.0 is also a plus, as it adds better and stronger connections. Sound Quality- Decent enough. If you are on android I believe you can tweak an EQ to turn up the mids. Plenty of bass, but I would have liked a cleaner more rich sound. Also plays iOS codec for streaming. Cons: No Noise Cancellation- At $149.99 these could have included some sort of noise cancellation. Even on the phone calls there is nothing to help filter out a barking dog, or a loud mall environment. But when playing music you wont hear any one unless it's a podcast and you have the volume low. Other than that they do get loud enough to block outside noises. Pocketability- I know that is not a word, but in 2020, not being able to put your headphones in your pocket comfortably is cumbersome at times. The neckband does bend but it isn't that small. I know I do not list too many cons, but trying to not compare these to other bluetooth headphones and earbuds at the similar price range is tough. Some added noise cancellation, smaller sizes, better sound quality, and a better over all package for the same price, or cheaper. The LG - TONE Flex HBS-XL7 headphones are a decent buy, but I would not recommend these over a few other sets of headphones.

I’ve tried a bunch of this style headset and this one is the best for the money. The call quality is really good. I can hear my calls very clear as does the person I’m speaking to on the other end. The earbuds fit well they also block out noise pretty well too. I typically can get a full day of use out of these including an hr or 2 of straight music. Music wise these sound better than the beats x I tried, skull candy, other LG headsets, and a cheaper version of a Sony pair. Clear sound and decent bass. I personally love the retractable earbuds. The neckband is comfortable to the point you forget you’re wearing them. I would have given them 5 stars except they are not sweat or waterproof and the sound quality isn’t quite there if you are to compare to Bose’s neckband(wanted those but couldn’t see paying $300 for them). Would have also been nice if the google assistant button worked with Siri. Overall this headset is great if you are looking for the neckband headset that sounds great, comfortable, and earbuds you don’t have to put up or let dangle. Buy it now!

this is one comfortable headphones, its crazy light, sometimes I always forgot that I’m wearing one, the quality great much better than the Addidas RPT 01 that I tried. the design reminds me of LGs soundbar with sleek metallic grey look, pack with Meridian technology just like their soundbar. it’s deff something to get excited about, the headphones also comes with dedicated button for google assistant, never bother using them coz I don’t really use voice assistant . overall I would say I like this this headphone it’s light and the main wire was so thin, I remember owning a samsung and it wasn’t as thin as this. solid headphones lg can definitely see myself using this at the game. giving it 4/5 star coz again, there’s still some great sounding headphones out there for the price it offers.

I think there are 4 main things that any company making a Bluetooth headset in 2020 needs to do correctly to be successful. Those are setup/connection, audio quality, ease of use, and of course comfort. I would say that LG has been able to get most of these things right. First off, I feel like the initial pairing was pretty straightforward, it wasn’t until I was trying to get the Google Assistant feature working that I ran into some issues. I paired these earbuds with an iPhone 11 Pro and a Chromebook. I was able to pair them both to the headset pretty quickly. A great feature is that you are able to pair 2 devices at once to the earbuds. I was listening to music on my iPhone, but when I wanted to watch a video on my Pixelbook I was able to switch to it pretty quickly without having to go through the hassle of disconnecting and reconnecting to the other device. Now, trying to connect the Google Assitant feature on my iPhone was a bit of a headache. It took a few times of unpairing and repairing, force closing the Assistant app, and even a restart of the phone. But, once it finally connected to the assistant it has after a few weeks of use remained connected to it. Pushing that Google Assistant button fires up Google and you can use it much as you would normally ask questions or complete some tasks. One thing I did appreciate is that the Google Assistant will also notify you of incoming messages and read out your messages as well. Not quite as full-fledged as Siri on the AirPods, but really good none the less. Sound quality has been great on par with some other mid to high-end wireless earbuds/headphones I have used. Good mids and lows, and because these sit in your ear they do a great job of passive noise cancellation. It would be kind of like if you had earplugs on, they do a great job of muffling/reducing outside noise. This is great if you just want to enjoy the music, but if you are hoping to hear your surroundings then I recommend you use only one earbud. These are super easy to carry around your neck, sometimes I forget they are on me. They stay in place for the most part. I have yet to have them slide off or start to slip to one side. The cord connecting to the earbuds are super thin, they remind me of dental floss. I am hoping that they are pretty resilient, but only time will tell. It doesn’t take much effort to pull them out of their cradles or reel them back in when you are done. The earbuds are tiny, and I have been pretty comfortable with the medium size silicon buds that come preattached, but you do have 2 other sizes included if you require a different size. All in all, I really enjoy using these so far. They are super convenient to carry around and use. The sound is amazing. There is zero lag that I have noticed when watching movies or videos online. They are comfortable, and the convenience of having 2 devices paired at once along with the built-in Googe Assistant is great. I could easily recommend these to anyone looking form a good set of around the neck earbuds.

    Impressive Bluetooth Headset!

I own 6 pairs of working Bluetooth headsets currently and have had 5 LG Tone headsets starting with the very first ones. I have to say that I am very impressed by the improvements LG has made in the Tone Flex HBS-XL7 Bluetooth headset compared to previous versions I had up to the first Retractable LG Tone Ultra's. The retractable feature is a great feature to have and it seems LG has improved upon the reliability of the connection with this newer model. I love the dedicated Google Assistant button that was is a brilliant feature addition in my opinion to the HBS-XL7's. The fact that they put it by itself on the right side is also a very smart move that makes it easy to find and easy to use! Another feature that I noticed is greatly improved is the built-in voice assistant. The voice assistant's vocabulary has expanded making it the most user-friendly version I have experienced to date. While many voice assistants have proven to annoy me I actually enjoy using it on this headset. Additionally impressive is the all-important sound quality factor. For an earbud-style headset, the Tone Flex HBS-XL7 headset has great range and detail with good bass and crisp high-end sounds that remind me of good tweeters in a car stereo! I wear these at work all day and not only do they stay on while doing hard physical labor of all types I have found them to work great for phone calls as well as music and talk shows or podcasts. All of my phone calls with HD voice have sounded very alive and real and made me feel like I was talking in person rather than on a headset. Also, no one can tell I am on a wireless headset and have never mentioned or complained at all about call quality. The connection range seems to be only around 50-70ft with my Samsung phone a Note 9 and S10 Plus while in the house with walls interfering. However, if you have your phone on you in a holster as I do all of the time they never disconnect as long as your phone is nearby. I have had several other Bluetooth headsets that had problems staying connected while sitting on my waist in a holster in the past. Overall, I am impressed by the improvements LG has made and it seems they are working hard to improve this line of headsets. LG started the onslaught of this style of Bluetooth Headsets with their HBS-730 and many have copied it since. It is nice to see them continue improving upon the Tone product line. They have even made the charging port easy to access which is a problem on some of my other headsets and it is now USB C. If you catch the LG Tone Flex HBS-XL7 headset on sale for around $120 like they are now at Best Buy I would not hesitate to make the purchase. I think they are a great buy for that price and could even see paying full price if they are in your price range.

These headphones are comfortable to wear around the neck. I like that the ear buds don't stick out further than the end of the headphones like they do on my older version of LG Tones. The sound quality, to me, didn't seem to change from my old LG Tones to this version. Sound quality seems to be about the same. I've tested these on phone calls without any problems. These also work with Google Assistant. These don't cause any pressure around my neck as the old ones did. These sit close to my neck but but are more or less on my shoulders. I like the new design due to this. My neck size is 16 to give a reference. I would recommend these to someone looking to get headphones of this style, however, I don't see enough difference between these and my old HBS-A80's to be able to recommend them to someone who already has a pair of HBS-A80's. If you are replacing old headphones due to a problem with the old ones, then yes, I would recommend these as replacements. Overall, great comfortable headphones that do what they are intended to do. Pros: Comfortable Better design involving the retracted earbud position Reasonably light Quality I would expect from a pair of headphones' earbuds Good battery life Cons Audio quality doesn't seem to have changed much

I purchased this headset about a month ago, it's been working well so far. Ear gel doesn't hurt, and no fatigue after extended use. It last me almost 2 days (for my use). Dual microphone background noise cancelling quality could be better for the listener, that's why 4 star. Google assistant is nice feature.

First I have a few different neckband headphones and these are one of my favorite because of the overall design sleek thin light and flexible. I like the fact when you have the earbuds in your ear...It’s harder to notice because of the thin wire so that’s pretty cool. Sound is a little better than average. For me Calls were good on either end. Neckbands can be very convenient because of the work I do...like when I go into business I can easily pop them out and give a little tug and magically disappear. While with earbuds. I have reach into my pocket...grab the case. Of course I need two hands. Open them up and sometimes dropping the earbuds and getting frustrated. Don’t get me wrong I still love earbuds but it’s just more work sometimes and neckbands battery generally last a lot longer!
