I had long wanted the LG Gram 17" laptop, but this opportunity presented itself and I went for it. It has surpassed my expectations and I am very happy with it. Its fast, responds quickly and i am able to run some pretty heavy programs simultaneously with no noticeable drain on the CPU. Of course as all reviews mention, the keyboard is lack lustre. Though it doesnt diminish the overall product.

Setup:
Setup is easy, from turn on, the initial setup was rather painless, despite Microsoft’s use of linking the user accounts to Hotmail/live accounts. I prefer off-line accounts, but once the initial setup is complete, one can change the accounts to off-line accounts.
The overall setup process is fast. The windows 10 home experience is good but I eventually upgraded to Windows 10 Pro as I needed the additional features for WSL2. It took less than 7 minutes from the time of turning on to logging into the computer.
Design / Internals / Externals:
The less than 4.5 lbs (measured at 4.4 lbs) aluminum body laptop features a 17 “ screen with an Intel 10th generation Core i5-10210U, 4 core 8 thread, Comet Lake CPU, featuring a base clock of 1.6 GHz, and a max clock of 4.2 GHz. The CPU features a 15W TDP (Thermal Design Power), which gives it its power-sipping features. The laptop comes with 16 GB of DDR4 ram and a 512 GB Samsung NVMe SSD. The laptop features two USB 3.0, one USB C, one USB 2.0, Full Size HDMI Out, Bluetooth 5.0, Webcam, a Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ax Wifi 6, and a MicroSD card reader. The shipping box is sparse, with a power brick, power cord, and not much else.
The CPU features the Intel UHD graphics onboard which is plenty for basic applications and more. The crowning piece of this version of the LG Gram is the included Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 video card with 4gb of DDR5 memory. This allows for the laptop to perform various 3D calculations and can be used by apps that can leverage the 3D abilities including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Lightroom, Blender, Sketchup, Autocad, etc. You can even use this to play games.
The laptop features a 17”, 16:10 format 2560x1600 resolution IPS screen. There is no other word to describe it but “Gorgeous”. It’s so clear, bright, and oh it is reflective gloss. But apart from the gloss screen, which really isn’t a bother when the screen brightness overpowers in most situations. The screen is color accurate and clear across the entire screen. The screen allows you to open multiple windows side-by-side for better productivity.
Performance Evaluation:
For evaluating the performance of the CPU and thermal throttling, I put this laptop through various challenges and monitored it with OpenHardwareMonitor. At idle, the CPU temps stay around a comfortable 35C which is very comfortable for use without a cooling pad and for general purpose use. However, any sort of intense calculations or extended high CPU use (in my case large excel sheets calculations, running of MySQL queries and compiling programs in Visual Studio), the temperature shoots up and the fan kicks on. I noticed while running Prime95, the CPU speed never went past 2.5ghz and CPU stayed at 80% of max processing for the period of 4 hours, it seems the CPU was throttling itself and never got to the higher speeds or temps.
I did play a 15-round session (against bots) of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Just to evaluate its gaming credentials. Gaming was fantastic, fluid, and absolutely fun. However, if you use the laptop on a hard surface as I did, even at 1080p resolution (vs. 2560x1600), the CPU and GPU temperatures shot up to an ungodly 91C (for the CPU) and 81C (for the GPU) after one gaming session, and the fans were whining real loud. The heat was streaming off the keyboard, I could feel it through the keys, and the top of the laptop by the function keys was hot enough to burn you. That said the only way you can use this laptop for gaming is to use a cooling pad. The design for cooling the CPU are vents located on the bottom and any help given to the laptop in terms of unrestricted airflow helps keep the laptop cool.
I have been gaming with a cooling pad, and it has fared better, overall temperatures were down 20-25C from the highs without a cooling pad. This made it more comfortable to use, fan noise is loud but not excessive.
Overall Impression:
I like this laptop very much, this is my new road warrior, despite the fact that I have a love-hate relationship with the keyboard and its layout. I have other 17” laptops from other brands, and they are bulky, so this one wins that count. However, the keyboard is my one sore spot, because I do a lot of excel/keypad/directional control use, and that is my only downside. May not be for you, but for me sure is. The part of the keyboard for typing is so-so, the feel could be better, I use a lot more pressure to type, however, it’s accurate, and as a touch typist, it works well. Maybe my other laptops use lighter force in typing.
That said, I will be using this more, and since I travel a lot normally, this has replaced my previous solution of a light 2-n-1 touch screen laptop, which I will not sorely miss. The screen size on this laptop is so comfortable for everyday use, I don’t know why I never went to a 16:10 at this resolution and size earlier. It’s amazing when you can comfortably run two screens of documents right next to each other and not feel a pinch that you are missing out.
If you are looking for pretty much a do it all laptop, this one should be one of your top picks. Do note you can game on it, and the gaming experience is great but you should have sufficient cooling on the bottom with a cooling pad. This laptop would not be acceptable to use on your lap or on a table cloth or anything else that would restrict airflow and frankly, it really needs a cooling pad for general purpose use.
Pros
* Amazing 16;10 IPS 17” inch screen that looks so good. Low strain, yes it’s reflective, but it’s bright too
* Touchpad feel is one of the best I’ve had - smooth, with limited multi-touch.
* Bluetooth built-in can use a Bluetooth mouse, saving USB Ports
* Superfast Samsung NVME SSD, though no SMART features it seems
* Capable of gaming should you want to.
* A 72Wh battery can power through most of the workday. LG claims 16 hr battery life, I averaged 6-8 hours without a charge, depending on screen brightness and what you are doing, battery life is going to vary.
Cons:
* The 10-key number pad is non-standard, not sure why they did not use the other keyboard layouts that are available for the other LG Gram’s. This is SO not comfortable to use. The non-standard placement of decimal “.” and the operation keys make it hard for someone who is used to a standard layout keyboard and does a lot of excel transactions. Once again, the other keyboard layout is better. LG, can I replace the keyboard/face?
* No fingerprint sensor on the power button like the other LG Gram models. - the keyboard is springy, and okay, could have a better feel.
* No support for Windows Hello via the webcam / no fingerprint sensor
* Not a true gaming machine, overheats, will need a cooling pad for daily use even if not doing intense work/gaming - heat comes through the keyboard, the top portion of the laptop hit 91c

Welcome to LG's very portable 17-inch 16:10 Laptop

Without a doubt, LG sure did an amazing job making their 17-inch WQXGA LG Gram laptop light and as such, very portable thanks to the smooth matte grey metal alloy chassis. I'd like to say that the most defining feature of this laptop is the 17-inch IPS screen with a screen ratio of 16:10, and even though it's glossy, the laptop's portability and usefulness are simply awesome along with the fact you never need to worry about bringing along any dongles (adapters), as the LG Gram laptop comes with built-in 1 x USB-A (2.0), 2 x USB 3.1 Type-A, 1 x USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 (you can use this port to connect to an external monitor; supports 4K), 1 x Ethernet (RJ-45), 1 x HDMI (supports 4K), and Bluetooth connectivity. It also includes a MicroSD card reader, but it sure would have been more practical to provide a full-size SD card reader instead. IPS monitors are “In-Plane Switching” monitors that have much better color accuracy and quality, and they have much better viewing angles, so you can look down at them, or across at them, and the colors still display properly, which is perfect for designers and gamers alike.
For whatever reason, LG uses its proprietary power supply and port, but according to a very responsive LG Support (kudos!), you can recharge the laptop with a 3rd party USB-C adapter. I wished LG had added a 2nd USB-C connectivity instead of their power port.
The backlit keyboard is pretty good, where key feedback is on the softer and quieter side. I don't understand, though, why the insert and delete function share the same key, where the insert function is invoked by pressing the Fn key. I am used to using Shift-insert for pasting content from the clipboard, and now need to use Ctrl-V instead. No big deal, but the presence of a normal insert key would have been nice. Had LG moved the power button to the side (for example, by the power plug), they could have given insert its own key. And then, LG could have nicely separated out the numeric keypad, but for whatever reason, they did not. There would have been space enough to accommodate that.
The touchpad is roomy, and I like the current size of 4.75" x 3" as it avoids accidental cursor moves. The integrated mouse keys are less impressive, though. In my opinion, a pair of dedicated
mouse keys would have been a much better fit for the 17-inch chassis.
This laptop comes with an Intel 10th Gen Core i5-10210U CPU @ 1.6 GHz, an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 adapter, and a discrete GPU, Nvidia GTX 1650. The Intel 10th Gen Core i5 processor is a decent chip, but not the best performer when compared to an AMD Ryzen 3 3300X, therefore, I find this laptop more of a "Productivity Laptop" rather than a "Gaming Laptop". On the plus side, the power usage is lower than previous generations, and overclocking is available when needed. According to LG Support, if you want to use the discreet Nvidia GTX 1650 adapter to be used as the main one, you would select this option through the Nvidia control panel in "Manage 3D settings", "Global Settings", then select "High-performance NVIDIA processor". But then, this panel advises that Windows 10 is now in charge of managing the graphics processor. I'd like to believe that selecting "On" for Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" will do so. Just be aware, the higher power consumption of the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 depletes the battery faster.
The standard fan noise is audible and turns on shortly after booting up. However, when under higher loads like using Sketch and Adobe CC, the fan noise steadily increases to be even more audible as it runs faster but luckily never pulses or makes any sudden changes to RPM and noise.
As for the speakers, I am sorry, what a disappointment (and this is even an understatement!). While the stereo 1.5 W speakers are relatively loud, audio quality is below average. The sound definitely suffers from the "tin can" quality with non-existent bass reproduction. The supplied DTS software with an equalizer is rather useless for these kinds of speakers. Even if you add bass at 32, 64, or 125 Hz, the speakers just can't produce them. You would need to invest in external speakers to take full advantage of great sound.
The internal M.2 2280 storage is compatible with NVMe SSDs and this one comes with a 512 GB Samsung PM981a MZVLB512HBJQ SSD and uses the Samsung Phoenix controller and 3D-NAND TLC flash memory but limited by SATA III speeds, yet still good enough for this i5 processor-based laptop.
Last, but not least, battery life. The built-in 72 Wh battery did not enable me to make it through the day of real-world WLAN use without a power supply. For me, it's more like 4 to 6 hours on battery. Fully recharging the laptop is a bit on the slow side: About 3 hours. But this is okay with me.
In summary, I give this laptop 4 stars and can definitely recommend it to productivity and office users. I did not get too much time to spend on gaming performance but feel it should be fine when running at 1080p using the discreet Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 adapter.
If the following items don't concern you, then this laptop is worth 5 stars:
- Poor sound
- Proprietary power adapter and plug
- Keyboard layout
- Not having dedicated mouse keys on/by the touchpad
- Not having a second USB-C port
Did I mention the laptop screen quality is super-awesome, meaning, state-of-the-art?

Very nice machine with some unfortunate annoyances

This is a very nice machine. More than capable for even heavy tasks. It's no gaming powerhouse though and in fairness to LG they never indicated that it was. The Geforce 1650 included is there to work, not play.
Pros
-Build quality: The machine feels solid despite not having a metal body.
-Ports: 3 USB A, 1 USB C, Ethernet, HDMI, headset jack, and micro sd
-Size: 17" laptop that is barely larger than my Mid-2014 15" Macbook Pro
-Touchpad quality: nearly as nice as the one on my Macbook Pro
-Screen: This is the best feature in my opinion. Simply gorgeous.
Cons
-Touchpad location: As you can see from the picture I've posted, LG chose to locate the touchpad closer to the center of the machine than it should really be. Because the keyboard is shifted slightly over to the left to make room for the number pad, your right hand will make contact with it more than it should while typing. It's not a deal-breaker, but it is intermittently annoying.
-Keyboard layout: This is the one that could be a deal-breaker for some. For whatever reason, I end up making a ton of mistakes while trying to type on the internal keyboard. I don't know if it's because I'm trying to compensate for the position of the trackpad or something else. I've never experienced this before with any other laptop. It's not just me either. I had both my wife and my sister use the machine for 1 or 2 days and they had the same experience. My solution is to just use an external keyboard and mouse, which to be honest, I do most of the time anyway. It's still annoying though when on the go. The other big problem I have with the keyboard layout is the right Shift key. Due to the positioning of the up arrow key, it is much smaller than it should be (see my attached image) and does not line up with the right edge of the enter key like on most other keyboards. As a result, I often found myself accidentally pressing or holding down the up arrow instead which was also a hassle.
-Speakers: I'm not sure why, with all of the other great stuff packed into this machine, LG seems to have made sound quality an afterthought. I would not want to listen to music on these speakers. Headphones or external speakers are a must. For me that's not really an issue because I'm already using an external keyboard and mouse. So, "in for a penny in for a pound", external speakers have joined the mix.
All in all, the pros of this machine definitely outweigh the cons. It's rather beastly in the raw processing department. I suppose that, given use over a much longer period of time, I'd get used to the trackpad and keyboard issues I've mentioned above and they would become a non-issue. The speakers are what they are. It's easy to hook up to wired external or even a bluetooth ones and on the go, a pair of headphones or bluetooth earbuds would do the trick as well. As such my rating is 3 stars.

Sleek and Fast LG Ultra PC

The LG Ultra PC is my new favorite laptop PC. With a 17" inch 2560x1600 resolution IPS screen offers crystal clear and sharp images. The Intel Core i5 processor is perfect for getting jobs done and with the 16GB Memory onboard this system runs extremely fast while multi-tasking.
Setting-up the laptop was easy and fast, and learning the basics was a breeze with the LG Easy Guide 2.0! I also was impressed with the Reader Mode offered on this device which makes the reading of text easy on the eyes. I am a MacBook Pro guy so my review is coming from the comparison of Apple devices and as a Mac user, I am very impressed with LG Windows PCs. I found doing my school assignments and work on the LG ultra PC to be more enjoyable than on my MacBook Pro. I also found this LG laptop is easier to carry around with me as it is light. Microsoft Office works wonderfully on this PC and so does using Zoom for meetings. I was in a 5-hour zoom meeting with my brightness all the way up on the 72Wh battery and still had over 60% of battery life! Impressive! Every software I installed on this machine was fast and easy and had zero errors!!
This laptop never heated up or got hot while I was using it, it actually stayed cool to the touch. I ran the beginning of Fortnite to see how this laptop would handle it, and there was no lagging and Fortnite ran just fine on this computer. The machine never got hot or making any noise but again I only attempted light-gaming. I actually noticed how good the graphics are on this screen, the images "POP" and are really sharp. The colors are also impressive with this screen. The track-pad is one of the best and easy to use. The keyboard is not that bad, especially if your use to using the new Apple keyboards then you will appreciate the keyboard on this device. However, I wish the power button was not part of the keyboard, for some reason it just bothers me. It should have its own special place and not be a key to the keyboard. As far as the sound, it can fill the room if you have it on a flat surface so the sound can bounce off the surface because the speakers are under the laptop which actually is an interesting place to put them. If you have it on your bed or couch, the sound will be muffled. Its recommended by LG to not leave this device laying too long on a couch or a bed doing heavy work cause the cooling vents are on the bottom and require a flat surface to cool correctly. However, I have yet experienced this PC getting hot and has stayed cool the entire time I used it. Overall I am impressed with this device and I recommend it. I feel this LG ultra pc is going to last for years which is exactly what people want from a computer. I have been impressed with almost every LG product I have ever own so this laptop was no surprise to me. I recommend the LG brand and I recommend the LG Ultra PC Laptop to anyone needing a PC that can do it all!

Straight up no frill laptop. Got it on sale. laptop is very beautiful and I love the screen aspect ratio. the keyboard is very good and has a full number keypad. weight is very good too, even though its a 17 inch laptop, weight wise it is a 15 inch and fits comfortably in a 15.6 inch laptop sleeve
screen is very bright and text looks very good. for text and reading the screen is plenty bright so much so that I have to dim the brigtness. I bumped up the scaling to 175% and keep it there but on a rare occasion if a program or an app does not fit then I scale back to the default recommended 150%
some issues as of now. there is some noticable slowdown due to a somewhat budget processor. like I mentioned the screen is very bright for text and reading but for video and movie watching I would have liked a little more vividness and a bit more of a pop. the power brick is a little big too but I guess since this has dedicated video card it probably needs a large brick. and I believe the laptop cannot be charged via usb c.
if I have to say the worse thing about the laptop, its got to be the speakers like so many others have mentioned. Yes, they are very bad so much so that my mobile phone speakers are much better. I have no choice to use headphones or to connect a Bluetooth speaker. with the Bluetooth speaker so far I have noticed no audio delay while watching videos with the Bluetooth speaker that I am using.
I got the laptop on sale for $999.99+tax and I think that is a very justifiable price for it. I don't recommend spending more than $1000 on it.

I've had this a couple of weeks now and I like it. The screen looks great, though I wish it had a glossy finish and it's plenty fast for anything I want to do. It would be nice if the speakers (and the vents) were not on the bottom as the sound (and the ventilation) gets blocked by my legs when using it as a "laptop". The keyboard is good, but the built in mouse is terrible. There are no "buttons" - the bottom left and right corners of the mouse pads have a tactile feel and work as buttons. However, the "mouse movement" area extends nearly all the way to the button area, so every time you press a button, the cursor moves. This makes it very difficult to scroll or page-down using the scroll bars. I like the fact it doesn't have a CD/DVD (I consider having that a design flaw in a laptop). External optical drives are cheap, and the room saved provides space for other things - like connections. I give this 4 stars (not 5) because of the mouse) and because they thought it was a good idea to have a shiny & very reflective screen

Solid laptop with an beautiful large display

This is a solid laptop with a great 17 inch display.
Please do not confuse this the LG Ultra PC 17 with the LG Gram 17. I have both laptops and will compare the 2 models here:
Display: Both have excellent 17 inch 2K displays which are bright with great clarity. The image quality on both laptops appear to be about the same. In fact, to my eyes, the display on the LG Ultra PC 17 seems to achieve a higher maximal brightness compared to the LG Gram 17.
Keyboard: The keyboard on the LG Ultra PC 17 is comfortable with a good size keys, sufficient separation between keys, and adequate tactile feedback. This keyboard feels more spacious than the one on the LG Gram 17 due to the larger keys. One thing that bothers me is the unusual layout of the Zero and Period on the number pad, with the Right Arrow Key intruding into the number pad. This has led to a lot of typos, accidentally hitting the Right Arrow Key when attempting to type Zero with my index finger on the number pad. I am trying to retrain myself to type Zero with the middle finger.
Function Keys: Half-size function keys are used on both LG Ultra PC 17 and LG Gram 17, which is a bit disappointing, given that there appears to be plenty of room for full-size function keys. In addition, both LG laptops do not have a function-lock feature, so changing the sound volume constantly requires the use of 2 hands. This lack of function-lock is annoying especially when watching videos or listening music. LG, if you are reading, PLEASE ADD FUNCTION LOCK feature via software update if possible.
Size and Weight: Both LG Ultra PC 17 and LG Gram 17 have similar footprint sizes. However, the Gram feels significantly lighter, at about 2/3 of the weight as Ultra PC. Therefore, the LG Ultra PC 17 feels like a fatter Gram.
Sound: Both LG Ultra PC 17 and LG Gram 17 have bottom firing speakers and sound average. The speakers work OK when placed on a solid flat surface. However, the sound may become muffled when the laptops are placed on softer surfaces.
Trackpad: The trackpad is large and smooth. The placement is at the center of the laptop, but off-center to the spacebar. So far, this has not caused significant typing issues for me.
Processor and Graphics: The LG Ultra PC 17 has an Intel i5 CPU and a Geforce GTX GPU. The LG Gram 17 has an Intel i7 CPU but no discrete GPU. This likely makes the Ultra PC 17 a better gaming machine, but I have not tested gaming on either laptop.
Materials: The LG Ultra PC 17 exterior is made of an aluminum materials, which feels smooth and premium. Even though the LG Gram 17's carbon-magnesium exterior material was touted to be high strength, the actual feel is quite plasticky.
Summary: Both LG Ultra PC 17 and LG Gram 17 have large, bright, and clear displays. LG Ultra PC has a discrete GPU, which makes it better for gaming and graphics applications. The keyboard is functional, with some quirks. LG Ultra PC 17 is lighter than the average 17 inch laptop, not quite as slim as the LG Gram 17.

Build quality of this laptop is solid. It is constructed from Aluminum rather than from the Magnesium alloy LG uses for the LG Gram line, this adds to the overall rigidity.
Quality of the display is second to none, the brightness is not lacking (unsure of the specific rating) and the clarity that comes from the 2560 x 1600 resolution on a 17 inch panel is excellent. Viewing angles are also great, colors remain accurate and do not fade or look washed out when viewing from extremes thanks to the IPS panel.
Trackpad is also very sturdy and spacious with good feedback when clicked. There is space to potentially make it larger but the size of the one provided shouldn't be an issue for most.
Battery life on this device is also above average, this is thanks to the low power Intel core i5 processor. I generally lasted about 8-10 hours of mixed use (YouTube, Web Browsing, some light coding.)
Keyboard was adequate, however the layout and the keys were something I couldn't get used to. The inclusion of the numpad is nice and can be beneficial for users that require it, however the way it was implemented makes the keyboard feel "squished". I would have preferred if the numpad had been omitted (this is a personal preference) and have the keys better spaced out for erginomics. I do believe if the numpad had a better implementation then it would have been okay. The keys themselves were solid and not too mushy as one could describe it.
GPU performance of the laptop was decent, with the inclusion of the GTX 1650 Dedicated GPU, you are able to play some light games (League of Legends, Genshin Impact, Hollow Knight etc.) at decent frames (generally 60 fps with medium settings depending on the game).
Fans remain silent when computer is idle and not doing any demanding tasks. Even when the fans do kick up, they are audible but not very loud and can be cancelled out easily with basic headphones (the fans will likely not disturb those in the surrounding environment either).
Heat isn't too bad either, the lower TDP of the components used in this laptop result in decent thermals even under load (you can use this as a "lap" top and not have your lap get excessively warm).
CPU performance itself is also good (if not the best) for what it is. Running some tests had it exceed other laptops using the same chip, however it is designed for efficiency rather than raw performance. The CPU (i5-10210u) is outclassed by the Ryzen equivalent (AMD Ryzen 5 4500U) in nearly every test, so if you are looking for the most performance available while remaining within a less power hungry machine, I would look elsewhere.
Overall this machine is best for productivity, the screen real estate is great for fitting lots of spreadsheet data or lots of lines of code. Light or medium demanding games can be played by adjusting settings but this should not be considered a gaming laptop. Battery life is fantastic which means you will not necessarily have to rely on having the charger with you at all times.

First time buying an LG laptop and got this on sale for $1199 and it is great! Dedicated graphics card with ssd (and has space for another one). Has backlit keyboard, although as of this writing, have not been able to find where to toggle it on. Not too much bloatware and was good to go in less than 15 minutes. Bought an external dvd drive and was able to use it on the usb-c port.

This laptop is the best! I got it open box and saved a lot of money. The laptop screen is gorgeous and is the perfect size with small bezels. The battery is absolutely amazing and can easily last all day. The laptop is fast and has a dedicated graphics card which is very nice. The build quality is also very nice and the backlit keyboard is a great feature. The camera is nice for zoom calls and overall, I couldn’t ask for a better laptop. It has all the features you’d want in a laptop and I highly recommend it.

Awesome laptop. I had some set up issues with some software I use but Tech Support for my software vendor fixed the problem, not a Laptop issue. I wish the numeric keypad was full size. It's a 17" lap top give me a full keyboard HP does it. But, this laptop is awesome. So light so powerful. Only have been using it for about a week but so far 5 stars. Just work on the Keyboard LG and you have a winner.
