Great range extender that was trivial to setup

I bought this extender at Best Buy to add coverage for dead spots at the far end of my house. I extended the range of a Linksys E2500 router and it was trivial to setup. All I needed was a wireless PC, yes, the setup only works if you have a computer that has a wireless card (which my PC did not have so I used my wife's laptop). All I needed was my network password and decide what band I was going to extend; the installation software took care of the rest. The extender has a wall plug and power cord, so I used the power cord to get the extender up about shoulder height. I think that really helps the signal. I now have full strength to all parts of my house. The network shows up with the exact same name and password as my main router, so no changes to any devices were necessary, I just had to select the network with the strongest signal. Simple to setup, easy to use, and it belts out a nice signal. It's handling my streaming movies nicely.
The caveat here is that it is installed on the network with the standard admin/admin name password, so I would suggest you find it's IP address and at least change the default password. I consider this a security risk with the default installation.

I got the Linksys RE-2000 range extender and a Linksys AC 1200 router at the same time to replace my old Linksys WRT54g router. This was easy to set up and works great. I can use my Kindle 60 yards away from my house. At that distance the signal is getting weak, however, full bars up stairs or in the basement. I highly recommend to purchase both to receive full coverage in your house.

Blocked Signal To Tablet

I really wished this thing would have worked for me. I was happy with the price, VERY easy to set up and I liked the look of the device. I had to plug it in an outlet that was visible from within the house.
We have a "dead zone" outside the house - literally at our outdoor table on our pool deck (and no where else). After installation, I do a speedtest on our iPhone 5s at the outdoor table. Getting great speeds. Practically the same speed when I do another speedtest with the phone right by the Extender. Then I go to our iPad Mini with Retina Display (released in the fall of 2013) to start using it. No internet. I unplug the Extender and the iPad reconnects to the home wifi. Plug the Extender back in and back to no wifi.
Had to return the device... looking for another brand...

Okay for casual use

This extender would be good for casual phone or tablet use.
However I am using it with my PC. When streaming video or online gaming the connection will drop every few hours. It reconnects right away but you will have to refresh your video or re-log in to your game. Apparently it's very common and no fix for it, I will be finding a different brand extender because of this.

Hi chronsolo541,
There are lot of factors that would cause the connection to drop. To avoid this, make sure that the range extender is getting at least 3 bars from the wireless router. You may also reserve the IP address of the device on the router settings. In that way, it will have a permanent IP address and would help having a stable connectivity.
We appreciate your review about the Linksys RE200. We'd also like you to know that we are here to help. You may contact us via email at [email protected].

I have a fairly large 2 story 5 BR home and use a Cisco DPC3835 wireless router in my office upstairs and the connectivity and signal strength were pathetic, especially downstairs. The laptops were consistently dropping and Netflix was constantly buffering while watching a movie. It took 5 minutes to install the N300 and all of the laptops have full connectivity everywhere in the house. This completely solved my bandwidth issue.

I bought the RE2000 to help boost my wifi range in the house and so I could attach a new AVR receiver to the Ethernet port. The product worked well for about 4 months and then died. I contacted Linksys for help but since I couldn't locate the original receipt they wouldn't give me any assistance. Tried to get a deal on a refurbished product from them but they wouldn't do anything without the receipt.

Linksys RE2000 WiFi Extender - Garbage

The Linksys (Cisco) RE2000 Range Extender is a defective product that the manufacturer refuses to stop selling. You will experience the extender going into a continuous looping mode (flashing light) which will signal the end of the product. Please do a Google search for this issue and you will find many, many users expressing their frustration. DO NOT BUY !!!!!!

The setup process is too dumbed down. A setup wizard allows you to position the unit in your house, and will tell you if the signal is strong enough. The first time you get a good hit, the setup completes. Realistically, you would want to try several spots around the house.. which is not possible.
Once I got it setup, I found that my devices did not transition very well between the router and the extender as I traveled around the house. Our phones would briefly drop their connection, which was a nuisance when watching Netflix, etc.
After about a week, the extender stopped transmitting, and the status light was flashing. I could not get it to reset, even by forcing a factory reset. After doing research via google, I found that this is a very common complaint. I'm surprised there are no similar reviews here on the Best Buy site.
Will be returning to the store tonight, and will likely purchase a different brand. (Fortunately I'm still in the return period, but I would be pretty upset if I wasn't. Most people that complained were able to get a replacement from Linksys, but mentioned that the replacement units broke as well.)

Defective right out of the box...

Reading some of the positive reviews here on this extender, I decided to buy one considering that the clearance price was hard to beat too. Well...now I have an idea why. Light flashed for quick second and then went dark every time I plugged it in. Zero signal. But silly me, refusing to believe a brand new item could be defective, spent over an hour on the phone with Linksys Support only for them to tell me it was defective and should be exchanged.
Needless to say, I won't be exchanging but returning. Perhaps, I should've paid more attention to the negative reviews.

If there is any other way of boosting your performance, or looking at another product I would suggest doing that. I read the dubious reviews and thought, since I' pretty technical, I can make this thing sing. Wrong. Nightmare city. Spend a solid 2 hrs with technical support trying to get it to work. It is working now, but I'm not seeing a significant improvement. Marginal at best.

It just doesn't work. Yes it extends 'range' in the sense that you get a stronger signal, but you get the same slow speed as if you were running off the primary transmitter. Plus it constantly switches back and forth between the extender and the main unit, so it's completey unusable.

This extender worked for about 3 hours. I went on-line for help. Linksys FAQs were not of any help. I could not get a response from the chat line. Nothing worked and I tried everything possible to restore it, power down and power up, resets, hardware connectivity to my computer, etc.. I finally gave up totally frustrated. I do not even want an RMA. It is a waste of my time. I have given this product enough of my time. It was one of those bad investments in life. BTW: I am fairly tech savvy too

We tried to install the router with two different laptops both connected wirelessly to our modem/router. Every time we got to a specific step in the install, our connection to the modem/router dropped and the install failed. The install wizard takes you to Cisco's support page where they kindly tell you that they are happy to help for $39. No thanks! Back to the store it goes to be exchanged for another brand. It's 2013, Linksys! These devices should be plug and play. Period. No install CD, no wizard, no install scripts should be required any more. Especially when they all fail to work. Ridiculous.

Seems to only work if placed VERY close to the wireless router, which defeats the purpose of an extender.
