Dev Patel as older Saroo and Sunny Pawar as the younger are the heart and soul of this movie. Certain elements of the true story have been left out, I think it was privacy issues for certain people in the real Saroo Brierley's life, but the core story of his separation and return are all here. If this were a fictional tale it would be considered overly manipulative, so when you get all weepy (and you will), don't feel conned...this really happened. Great movie to watch with everyone.

We were not able to use the digital movie because someone else used the code in August of 2018. That would be the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5.

"Lion" Roars

"Lion" was my personal pick for last year's Academy Awards as Best Picture. The film is moving, involving, funny, dramatic, and ultimately uplifting in telling the true story of a young street urchin lost in the sweltering cities of India. After several dangerous and disturbing episodes trying just to survive, he is adopted by an Australian couple who move him down under, where he grows into adulthood. But the hole in his heart persists, and he begins an arduous task of trying to find his mother and brother, a piece of DIY detective work that consumes him. The cast, led by Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman who both earned nominations in their respective supporting categories, is uniformly excellent. This is a first rate film from opening credits to close, beautifully transferred to blu ray.

Lion is an excellent movie that captures a singular goal -- the desire to go home -- from two different perspectives but through the eyes of the same individual. The film plays with its core emotions extremely well in both of its very distinct halves, solidified by two enormously strong performances from Sunny Pawar and Dev Patel as the same character across the years. The movie doesn't offer many surprises, even for those who don't know the story but only the basic plot, but it succeeds thanks to the incredible portrayals and the real emotions the actors bring to the role. Anchor Bay's Blu-ray offers decent picture, excellent sound, and a few supplements. Highly recommended.

A compelling true life story of a 5-year old Indian boy who becomes separated from his mother and siblings. The journey he takes is heartrending. Just the portrayal in the movie makes your heart ache. It's hard to imagine what it was actually like for a child. The entire cast are superb, especially little Sunny! Patel and Kidman give real heart to their portrayal of these real life people. I especially enjoyed learning the significance of the movie title "Lion" at the end of the film, as well as the interactions of the birth mother, adoptive mother, and son. It's a weeper, but a joyous one!

The first 40 minutes of this film can be hard to watch, following a 5 year old, very poor Asian Indian boy, separated from his family, lost, scared, and running from some unpleasant people. The remainder of the film is that same boy now grown up in Australia, in a loving, well off, adopted family. But the young man can't find peace because he still longs for his lost Indian family. This film looks at the bonds of family in a very sincere way. This is a film in which the viewer can be forgiven for shedding a tear.

Of all the Academy Award movie finalists last year, this one was the best in my opinion. I was not excited to see this movie when I did but went to see this with larger family of all ages and everyone enjoyed this movie based on a true story. I cannot get others to watch it as people comment that it looks like another Slumdog Millionaire (pure fiction). This is nothing like the prior award winner which I thought was overrated as well. This is a true story which is compelling in all regards.

I bought this movie during my Black Friday shopping. I read the cover and decided to take a chance on it. I wan't disappointed. It is an interesting look at Indian society when a young boy falls asleep on a train and winds up a thousand miles away from his home where he is not even able to speak the local language. After some scary moments, he is ultimately adopted by an Australian couple and grows up on Tasmania. It is the story of his quest to discover his birth family, primarily through snippets of information that come back to him. He nearly destroys his adopted family and relationships with his obsessive behavior in his family search. He is finally successful, but goes through a lot of pain in the process.and his reunion is bittersweet. Good movie -- worth seeing.

Although I expected a deeper movie with better story, I am still very pleased with this movie. I think it was a little too simplistic and even rushed in the latter part of the movie so character development suffered a little. The young boy did a great job with his role. It was nice seeing Nicole Kidman playing this type of role instead of the always glamorous roles we're used to seeing her.

Good storytelling that takes it time to tell the story, but doesn't take too long. Production is so well done, it made me feel as though I was there living the story. The sights and sounds are just incredible. Acting of the highest caliber. This is a journey well worth my time and worth repeating.

Dev Patel does an excellent job as the primary character of the movie. The mix of current and past sequences highlights the story as it moves along and builds towards the climax of the movie. Ending sequences with the credits highlights the true individuals the story is based upon.

This movie was very touching and sensitive and helps you better understand the yearning that some people possess for the search and finding of their biological parents. Coming from a blended family, it was a nice and different aspect to the family life/human condition
