Great bag, not only for mirrorless.

I was looking for a backpack that was light and had a slim profile. I had given up on sling designs as they would be very uncomfortable on my shoulders after a day out. There are many backpacks, but most of them protrude at least about 10 inches or more. I had a kata 66i (I think) which is a great backpack but protrudes more than I would like it to. It is hard to find a good balance of having a slim profile bag while keeping your camera adequately protected. Most of the bags that fir this profile are "made" for smaller camera systems such as mirrorless system and entry level crop sensor DSLRs. I was hoping to find something that would fit my 5D Mark III with lens attached along with another lens and some smaller accessories. The design of the Hatchback series by Lowepro caught my eye. The thin profile looked great but the vast majority of customer reviews were for mirrorless systems. I did not see reviews that mentioned full sized SLRs like the 5D series or D800. After looking at the dimensions online, looking at Lowepro's website (which noted that the 5DIII with attached lens would actually fit) and measuring my main "go-to" combos (5DIII w/ 16-35mm f/4 or 24-70mm f/2.8) I decided to give the bag a try. I opted the 16L as opposed to the 22L because of the smaller profile. I chose the blue (orange is a bit cheaper, but its orange, and the slate grey is nice but a bit more expensive and I actually like the change, since all my other bags are black or tan). I was pleasantly surprised when I brought it home. The main compartment in the back (it opens in the back) easily fit my 5DIII w/ 16-35mm f/4, though there was little room left over in the main camera compartment for much besides a charger or filter case. A word of warning is that the 5DIII was a bit high and did not fit flush, though the compartment was sill able to be zippered close and I was unable to feel any discomfort on my back due to the backpacks excellent cushioning. I didn't mind only fitting my camera with lens in the main compartment since the front top compartment was quite large as I was able to fit my 300mm f/4 L across with room for other accessories. I was also able to fit my 70-200mm f/4, 24-70mm f/2,8, 430ex, and 580ex in that top compartment alone. That compartment has a large zippered pocket within there. There is a front pocket that can hold a tablet, or an 11 inch macbook air from what I can tell. I was not able to fit my 13 inch macbook pro in the there. The beauty about this back if that the main camera compartment can come out (velcro) and this bag transformed into a normal backpack with one large opening. You can see reviews videos on this online from customers. Deep pockets on both sides of the bag enough for water bottles or a gorilla pod. The kicker here was no tripod strap, which seems to have been very easy to accommodate from Lowepro. With the deep pockets, all they needed to do was attached a strap on the top of the side and a small travel tripod such as the Gitzo 1541T would have been able to fit perfectly. I may try to sew a strap on in the future as it does seem very simple to do. Overall I am very happy with the bag. Hold exactly what I need to to hold (less the tripod) and only extended to about 6 inches.

I bought this bag for a friend. She is not the strongest lady, so it needed to be lightweight. Also it needed to carry a camera (dslr) and couple of lenses with a few other accessories. Unless you want to carry lenses like canon 70-200 it will do fine. I was able to fit a 135mm prime lens and a 24-70 Tamron lens easily along with my full frame camera when I was testing. The zip opens towoards the inside, so the chances of someone opening from your back and stealing your gear are gone. The top zip on the outer side gives access to another compartment to be able to access some stuff quickly. The build quality is very good as expected from lowpro and comfortable and lighweight enough for hiking.

    Best Most Useful Bag Ever

I looked at and even bought other bags for my simple setup and hated all of the other bags. The size, weight, usefulness and the quality is by far better than all others I tried. I have a Nikon D3200, 2 lenses, some filters, a charger and a host of smaller things that I carry with me, so the bag can get a bit heavy while hiking from me loading it up. But whats not so apparent when you first look at the bag are a couple of very handy features. There are upper and lower straps that are excellent at holding the bag still on your back (you don't think its a big deal till you use it) a rain and weather cover that tucks neatly into a pouch on the bottom that works awesome. The harness is heavily padded and is quick release, the internal cubby can be configured to your hearts content and is removable. There are several areas that hold items in the top and in the front as well. I swear I do not work for LOWPRO, I just love this bag.

This bag is the perfect size! It's big enought to carry our GoPro and our large digital camera, all the cords, batteries, chargers and cards, plus my iPad. It doesn't get uncomfortable to wear because of the padded straps. And it has two side pockets for our water bottles! The hidden waterproof cover came in handy on our last trip when it rained! I would definitely buy the bag again!

This is the 3rd Lowepro bag I now own and probably will be the most used. I've been using the Fastpack 250 (1st Generation), for the last couple years. The Fastpack is good pack but can get pretty heavy after a while. I've been waiting for a lightweight and weather-proof pack that I can take on hikes, outdoor events, bike-rides and over-seas travel. A current issue for me is the ability to stow the bag below the seat on planes for I use another bag for back-up clothes etc for top luggage bins. You'll be surprised at how much you're able to fit. Here's a list (and also a couple pics below) of what I've been able to put in: -Sony a57 with attached 55-200mm, 18-55mm, 50mm, 30mm macro -Sony NEX-5 with attached 18-55mm, 55-210mm -Apple iPad -Back-up SD cards x 4 -Pair of Lowepro camera straps -Card reader and LED flashlight A cool feature that I found is the ability to remove the camera compartment. Once removed, you're able to use the bag as a normal day-pack. In addition, there is a cinch-top cover for that compartment to keep out stuff, and also there is an attached rain/weather cover at the bottom for the pack. For those who own larger DSLR's, you might want to look into purchasing the 22 liter version. Also, if you're looking for a low-profile bag, something that doesn't scream "very expensive camera in here!", then you should look at the Photohatchback!

Bought this bag for my video camera because I didn't like the traditional shoulder camera bags. This bag has plenty of room, well made and designed, plenty of divided pockets as well. Also comes with a rain bag to go over the whole bag which is very cool. I love it. I have added plenty of large hardware to my camera and I still have not outgrown the size of this bag.

Took this to Maui on my honeymoon and it was perfect for storing our Canon Rebel, GoPro and GoPro accesories, and Bose bluetooth speakers. Not only is it spacious, but it also is made of great material, is comfortable, and it has a cover to place over the backpack when it rains. Worth the price!

This is a great carry case for outdoor purposes. I carry it when I go hiking and want to capture outdoor shots. It also comes with a rain cover and has multiple small compartments for extra batteries and cards. Only con is that it can fit only up to 3 lenses (depending on the size).

Those who live an active photography lifestyle need to ensure their gear stays secure and out of the elements as much as possible. The Lowepro Photo Hatchback camera bag is a great beginner bag! It safely holds your camera, an extra lens or two, maybe an external flash, and the top compartment easily holds all necessaries that you may bring to the field with you (raingear, sunscreen, other personal items, etc.) Another great feature I love about this bag is the rainhood that packs into the bottom of the bag. I have not encountered a heavy downpour to really test the bag, but before I would even consider taking it out in the rain, I would definitely use a waterproofing spray, for some "cheap insurance". One thing I would love to see on this bag though would be straps for attaching a tripod. As a landscape photographer, I always use a tripod, and something that could attach a tripod to the bottom would be so much more effective! Another improvement to the bag would be a bigger area in which a laptop could fit. I carry my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7" with a Belkin Bluetooth keyboard in the tablet pouch, but I don't believe a MacBook Pro would be able to fit in this pouch. Overall I give this bag a 4/5 stars, based on ruggedness, ease of access, storage options, and design effectiveness. If it had a tripod attachment and a bigger area that could serve a 15" MacBook Pro, this would be a 5/5 product.

Pretty sturdy and durable camera backpack I bring with me just about everywhere. The camera storage area is padded and can fit your camera with 2 or 3 lens. The top area have enough space to put my flash, lens hood, batteries, memory cards, etc...

If you have a couple of lenses and a medium-sized camera, it works perfectly. It allows you to put a couple of water bottles in the side pockets, carry some snacks or small items in the regular pocket, and yet not be too huge of a backpack. Works great for tourist attractions or just hiking in the forest. Has enough padding to protect bumps. The camera pocket (the zippered opening) for your equipment rests against your back, so if the backpack is on your back, there's no way for someone to steal your gear.

This is a great backpack for bringing a camera on a day hike. If you don't want to bring a camera, you can take out the insert in the main compartment and have room for books, laptop, etc. This backpack has a great advantage compared to others cause you can configure it to your needs. Even with a camera packed, there is room in the top half of the backpack for accessories, towels, etc. I took this on a hike a couple weeks ago and was able to store my jacket in there. Outer pocket has room enough for my iPad. Two side pockets can store large water bottles. The camera compartment is a little smaller than what I wanted, so you may have to compromise with your lenses. I stored a camera body, kits lens, a prime lens, and a flexible tripod in there. You can move the inserts around in the camera compartment however you want. The only thing I wish it had were straps to tie down the 'across the body' strap. All in all, a very good, compact backpack.

Great bag for a DX 2 lens kit and some extra items

Other than just saying what a great bag it is I will tell you what I am able to fit in the camera compartment. Nikon D5100 with 16-85 zoom attached, hood reversed and Nikon 55-200 zoom with no hood, alongside. I am also able to fit the D5100 with 55-200 zoom attached, and the 16-85 alongside. Alternatively, by putting the D5100 with 16-85 in at 90 degrees, grip facing the opening, I can fit my 70-300 instead of 55-200 alongside, with one pad in between. It's tight, but it fits. Any of these combinations makes me feel the equipment is safe. As far as the upper compartment goes, it has some convenient pockets and enough space for basic items that you might carry around with you for a day trip such as snacks, camera accessories, sunglasses, light jacket, etc. My iPad Air with cover fits nicely in the front pocket. Please refer to the pic's I've uploaded for the camera fit.

This bag is awesome. Probably my favorite purchase of the year. Bought it for our honeymoon to Paris and used it every single day. Perfect size for day trips. I was able to fit a mirrorless camera, lens, mini tripod, battery backup, memory cards, passports, snacks, wallets, phones, etc. all in this bag and it's not obnoxiously big by any means. I even tested the rain cover when we got caught it a shower and it worked great. I liked it so much I talked my mom in to buying one too.

It has ample storage without looking like an expensive diaper bag. We keep our go pro and cannon t3 in it The back zipper and storage compartment is great for the camera and the lens. It is comfortable to carry and has numerous compartments as you would like to have in this type of bag. We recently took it on a trip to Mexico and I found it very easy to use on excursions. I am also a Girl Scout troop leader and look forward to using it on hikes with my girls.

My family and I tend to travel outdoors near the lake and trails often. We needed a pack that was small, lightweight, and would still offer a bit of storage space (after our Cannon EDS wig two lenses, Sony, and video camera were placed inside). We've had nothing but compliments on this pack, just as we have nothing but praise for it. If you're looking for a nice waterproof outdoors pack, then look no further!

I purchased this bag for our trip overseas , it was really awesome!!! The camera was well protected and it has a compartment on the top were you can put your things in. It can also carry an iPad. There is also a hidden area on the very bottom that you can pull out to protect the bag if it's raining.

This is a great bag with room for plenty of stuff. We've used it a lot to bring the camera along with the kids, and it's been terrific to hold everything we need for the day. It's smaller than a full-size backpack, but bigger than a typical camera bag. It's perfect for trips or day hikes.

It's well-suited for carrying one regular size camera and accessories, plus a smaller unit (e.g., a GoPro and accessories). The backpack has nice padding and is well-designed with multiple compartments. Might be a little tight if you've a lot of gear or big cameras.
