I know what you're thinking, it can't be that bad right? Yeah just keep waiting, if you need battery life its great and all, but it comes at such a cost trying to used a half-baked OS that has no real reason to improve.... MS isn't Apple, and it takes Apple-level audacity to switch an entire architecture that MS will never have. So, for the price, no-- for like 50% off, sure.

I’m a sucker for nice packaging and I thought Microsoft did a great job here on a premium looking box. Unboxing the Surface Copilot+ Laptop 7th generation reveals a stunner of a laptop, a power adapter and some minimal literature. I was happy to see that the 39W power supply is quite small which will be convenient for portability. I do however wish it was simply a USB C charger instead of Microsoft’s proprietary charger. I do like that it connects magnetically so it breaks away easily in the event that you pull on the cord in some manner so that the laptop isn’t potentially damaged. The laptop itself is sleek, thin, and well made. The body is aluminum and is particularly fingerprint resistant. It weighs in at 2.96 pounds. It definitely has a premium build quality feel. I got the Dune color, which is as you would imagine a sand color. The color at times appears almost salmon colored depending on how the light hits it. I was skeptical before seeing it but now I do like it’s unique color. Specifications are impressive. The Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC has a 13.8" PixelSense Flow display with 2304 x 1536 resolution. I love the minimal bezels on the touch screen. Maximum brightness is 600 nits. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite 12 core X1E-80-100 processor. 512 gigabyte SSD. 16 gigabytes LPDDR5X RAM. A Qualcomm Adreno GPU. 2 x USB-C, 1 x USB-A 3.1 ports. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. I was excited to see how the surface performed so I proceeded to setup. I was impressed with its super fast boot time. Far faster than other laptops that I own. The setup process was your typical Windows 11 setup. I do particularly like the Windows Hello face recognition sign-in feature which make unlocking instantaneous. After setup there were a bunch of Windows updates available. One thing should be noted. The Surface Copilot+ laptop uses an ARM processor so not every program designed for Intel based processors will run currently but may ultimately be supported. Microsoft uses an emulation layer called Prism so you can run most of your favorite programs and games. I’m using the Surface laptop for work so I am unconcerned about anything I require not running. I frankly doubt many people would use this laptop as a gaming machine but that’s where most compatibility issues may arise. I use this laptop for work so it quickly became my go to machine for my daily email, spreadsheets, and Zoom meetings. The backlit keyboard and touchpad are exceptionally nice for everyday use. It’s also incredibly quiet with the fan noise being nearly non existent. Battery life is excellent. It’s rated at 20 hours. It sure got me through a days worth of work with battery to spare. Just using this laptop is a premium device experience. I even had multiple coworkers comment on how nice it was. I have used Copilot for quite a while but this is my first Copilot+ pc with its AI integration. With AI-powered features, the laptop can handle 45 trillion operations per second. With its powerful NPU, neural processing unit, this Surface Laptop 7 can handle AI intensive tasks like translation and image generation without sending data to the cloud. There is even a dedicated Copilot key which launches Copilot. If you haven’t used Copilot you are missing out on this amazing tool. I use it for work related tasks regularly, for everything from fine tuning emails to image creation for presentations. I’ve even used Copilot to create complex Excel formulas that were beyond my skill level just by describing what I needed the formula to do. This AI tool has truly become an invaluable asset. I was curious to check out some of the included AI tools on the Surface laptop 7. I started with Paint and it’s AI feature Cocreator which enhances your drawn images simultaneously to transform your drawings or even stick figures into an image which is far more sophisticated. I did find this somewhat gimmicky as the AI interprets anything you draw into an image. Draw a squiggle and Cocreator generates a sketch of a fish. I had no such image in mind when I drew my squiggle but it is fun to enhance your artwork. I found Restyle in the photos app a bit more interesting. Here you can manipulate an image’s background or the whole image using various themes. This is somewhat like using a regular photo editor filter but the effect here is transformed via AI. You can describe a style you want or select from preset styles like fantasy, anime, impressionism, etc. You can also choose to apply the effect to the foreground, background, or the whole image. This was really fun to play with. I did find some Restyled images largely unusable since the effects made the image often unrecognizable to anything close to the original. You can adjust the creativity level of the effect but its generated images are hit or miss depending on the original image. Then there is Image Creator, which is also in the photos app. Here you simply describe in text the image you want to create and the image is generated via AI. This tool runs locally on the X Elite NPU opposed to accessing the Cloud for image generation. The tool generates 50 variations of your requested image. I’ve used DALL-E via Copilot which can generate some impressively sophisticated and realistic images from a text prompt. Unfortunately, I found many of the images generated on the Surface to be disappointing and in many cases laughable with distorted features and bodies. Windows Studio Effects is another integrated AI feature on the Surface laptop to improve video calls. They include automatic framing which keeps you centered in the frame as you move. I like this motion tracking feature for Zoom meetings. Portrait Light which brightens your face to make you clearly visible even in low light situations. Eye Contact which makes your eyes appear to be maintaining eye contact even when you’re not. Standard for a subtle effect and Teleprompter uses advanced AI for a more natural eye contact appearance. There are also Background Effects with two blur options, Standard Blur and a more sophisticated looking camera portrait type blur. I like the portrait blur. You can also use Creative Filters such as Illustrated, Animated, or Watercolor to your whole video. These are kinda fun but I can’t imagine who would use most of them for a Zoom call. There is additionally a Voice Focus feature which helps isolate your voice and remove background noise during a call. While I find many of the AI tools useful, others are just disappointing and aren’t particularly useful. I’m assuming many features will be updated along the way. Ultimately, I really like this Surface 7 Copilot+ laptop. It’s by far the nicest laptop I’ve owned with great performance and exceptional design.

I was a little unsure what to expect with this laptop, given the new chip offering, the rebranding, and all of the pre-release hype that has been out there for quite some time; but, after spending some time with it, I am very pleased with it in just about every way. I really like what they have done with the look here. Sleek. Clean. Minimal. Modern. Good shape, good materials (all metal), largely, just good all around. Some would say plain, maybe boring, but honestly this is exactly what I am looking for. Well, almost exactly. I think the Graphite is absolutely beautiful, perfect looking for me, but I have been using the Dune. The quality is still there, and it still looks great, perhaps maybe a tad orange over gold (dune, makes sense), but the color is not for me. Choose what you like, and you should be pleased. As for the build and design, again, they have done well. It is solid, put together well, and just feels good in the hand. Yet, it definitely has a nice light weight. Easy to port around. The display looks very good and delivers bright, crispy, vivid, and accurate content. The corners are more rounded, which I like, and while the bezels are bit smaller, I still think they could do better on the top and bottom. They still look good, but just something to note. My only real dig here is that the screen is very reflective. Depending on what you are used to, it may be a bit distracting at first. It is not bad; I just wish they would have done something differently there. The keyboard is what you would expect from a Surface machine (with a dedicated Copilot key). I like the spacing, it is solid with no real flex, and has a nice feel. The backlighting is done well. The haptic trackpad is large, consistent, and quite good. The 1080p cam produces a nice image and easily will work for any video call needs. It also works with Window Hello. As for the speakers, well, I was pleasantly surprised. Not “quite” on Apple level, but certainly good. Not a ton of bass, but nice overall sound. Further, I like the connectivity choices. Modern wireless specs (Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4) ,and a nice selection of ports. 2 USB-C (USB 4 compatible), 1 USB-A (3.1 Gen 1), 1 3.5 Stereo, and the Microsoft Surface Connect port. While I do like the choices here, I do wish they would have put one USB-C on each side instead of having them both on one side. It would offer more flexibility. Honestly, I wish they just shipped a normal USB charge solution. Lastly, while you get a microSDXC card reader on the 15” version, you do not here. It would have been a nice add. When it comes to the internal hardware, I think this middle ground really is the sweet spot. I could see arguments for even stepping down, and, of course, depending on your needs, stepping up. RAM is always tough, and when there is no upgrade path (it can not be upgraded here), I always think getting as much as you can afford is not a bad choice. That said, I have been happy with the 16GB so far. In the case of the SSD, again, it will depend on your needs, but here you can replace and upgrade, so give it some thought. For me, 512GB, is mostly fine. I am not doing a ton of local file work and I have several cloud options. As for the rest of the internals, this is where it all gets interesting. The integrated GPU, well, not so much, and while you can definitely do bit of gaming, I really would be looking somewhere else if you are looking for gaming. It is capable, but definitely a tick behind what the competition offers in this space for now. The CPU (and NPUs) is really what this machine is all about. There are a few configs, but again, I like this middle ground, at least with what I am doing. On some level this is really going to depend on what you are looking to do on this machine, and what apps you need, but overall, it performed very well for me. I was in native apps, hammering Chrome tabs, office needs, e-mail, YouTube, dabbling with AI, etc… and, simply, it was great. Snappy, quick, no issues. Further, other than when I was purposely trying to tax the system the fans did not fire up once (when they did they were quite quiet). I messed with a few apps that relied on emulation, and, admittedly, it was hit or miss. I am confident that as time goes on, this will only get better and more broadly addressed, so it isn’t really a concern for me; but, if you are reliant on a specific app, make sure to look into it before making a move. Hand in hand with the processor performance is the toll it takes on battery life. Here, you’re going to think I am crazy, but it is amazing. If you have used a Windows machine recently, this has been a consistent issue. Especially when compared to what Apple has been offering. I am not ready to say they are “totally” on par yet, but it is close, and the difference has been night and day compared to what I have been used to on the Windows side. Yes, it will depend on what you are doing, and how you are using the machine, but battery life is substantially improved. Overall, in standby, off, in use, across the board. It absolutely is a tangible, real-life improvement. Lastly, Copilot. This was fun to spend some time with. Windows Studio Effects has so much to play with, and once I dig in a little more, I think it will really help my video calls. Again, actual real-life improvements can be found here. I had fun and lost time with Cocreator, but I am not sure what I can consistently use this for at the moment. I think Live Captions is the technically best of the Ai additions offered here, so much so that it baffles me how fast and well it works. All of this stuff is great, but I am not quite sure how it all ties into the Copilot stuff that already is in Windows 11. As it all comes together, I am excited to see the role the dedicated NPUs play, and what this laptop can do with it all. Ultimately, I really like this machine. A lot. I know AI has been the focus of the rebrand of these machines as opposed to be always connected, and I get it, but I think that sells these machines short on some level. This is a great laptop. Full Stop. It looks good, is spec’d nice, performs very well, AND has some great battery life. Yes, check your needs, but if they line up, I think it is GREAT value. If you were looking for a Windows Macbook, I think you may have found it here.

    The best Surface Laptop ever!

This is the latest Surface laptop from Microsoft with Snapdragon X Series processor. I have been a Microsoft Surface user since it was introduced. I have used mostly the Pro devices, but this is my first laptop with an ARM processor. This ultraportable laptop has a sleek design with the thinnest bezels of any Surface I have ever used. This lightweight laptop comes with a 13.8" beautiful PixelSense display that supports touchscreen and a dynamic refresh rate of 120Hz. Coming to the processor, this one is powered by the Snapdragon X Elite SoC. This is the first Windows on Arm processor that competes with other silicon, and you can't find the latest Surface devices in any other silicon variants. I was initially hesitant because of the applications that might not be supported for this architecture, but I was able to install most of them available. A handful of the applications that are not yet updated for the arm64 version do run on Microsoft's emulation. The best part is that you might not notice any difference when running any application if it runs natively via the emulator. The best feature of this laptop is the battery. I have used laptops where I needed to charge them every day, sometimes multiple times in a day. This Surface lasts 2-3 days of runtime before I need to charge again. You can simply say this is a device that is designed to last all day for your workday. Another notable feature of the laptop is the repairability. Microsoft has made is much easier to replace the parts like SSD, battery, etc. but beware of breaking any warranty. The sleek laptop design still accommodates a full USB A port, two USB C ports, and the 3.5mm audio jack. On the right side, you have the Surface magnetic connector option if you would like to use the included 39W power supply. You can also charge it via the USB C ports or connect to a docking station. The keyboard design is smooth and typing on it is so comfortable. The backlit keyboard is very responsive and tactile. The trackpad is a haptic touchpad and is the smoothest and largest one I have ever used. You can feel the clicks and it is fully customizable for your usage. This Surface laptop comes with Copilot+PC preinstalled. This is the AI assistant that can be interacted natively with via text and can be launched using the dedicated button on the keyboard. This is enabled by the dedicated Neural Processing Unit onboard. Copilot+ includes a collection of features like AI image generation, enhanced video calls, real time language translation and transcription. This is just a start and there will be more features added in the future by other applications as well. Overall, this is the best Windows laptop I have ever owned and used. If you ever wanted to have a MacBook like device with Windows OS, this is it.
