Plugged the charger in and one of the radios batteries started melting inside the radio and when I took it off the charger because I could smell the plastic burning it was so hot it burned my hand. The coverage is nowhere near what was advertised it barely works beyond half a mile, On top of that, the sound quality is terrible. There’s constant distortion and static noise, even when no one is talking on it. It’s loud, annoying. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone looking for a reliable communication device.

Don't buy unless you are looking for somethingcheap for the kids. 5 year dropped it like crazy so it's only positive comment is that it is durable.

Posted .The rechargeable batteries that come with the Midland X-Talker radios, when fully charged and used sparingly throughout the day should last about 5 hours. When the radios are heavily used during the day, the charge will be closer to 4 hours. I just wanted to comment that there is a large difference in the environment of a vehicle to vehicle communication with UHF radios like these and the environment for hiking. FRS radios require line-of-sight to the other radio user. When used in a vehicle the signal has to get out around the metal and glass that make up that vehicle. That will reduce the range and will cause your battery to work harder, therefore discharging faster. When you are hiking the fixed antenna of the radio is not blocked in the same way as it is in the vehicle. You will see much better range and better battery life when using them for hiking.

Radios don’t work 1 mile out on flat land without obstructions. Great for jeepers that are right behind you but not for my intended purpose.
