A Beautiful Science Fiction Film and a Little More

"Midnight Special" is Writer/Director Jeff Nichols and Michael Shannon's fourth collaboration and they have hit a bullseye. Everything in this film is top notch including the dialogue, the acting, the cinematography, the special effects and the editing. After "Mud" and now "Midnight Special" Nichols has proven he's a filmmaker that has a completely unique voice and a level of talent that is nearly unparalleled in modern cinema. Nichols has given his frequent collaborator Shannon the meatiest role as a man that will stop at nothing to protect a child with mysterious abilities. Luckily, Nichols has given all of the incredible supporting actors great material and they all knock it out of the park. Adam Driver("Star Wars: The Force Awakens", "Girls") in particular stands out playing against the usually evil FBI agent in this type of movie. "Midnight Special" is not the type of movie that can be casually watched but a film that you must pay attention to fully understand. In fact, "Midnight Special" really requires multiple viewings to catch many of the subtle nuances Nichols has written into his tightly paced 112 minute screenplay. While most modern science fiction films are being budgeted well over 100-million dollars Nichols has taken a reported 18-million dollar budget and made it look like like a film that cost 5-times that amount. I cannot recommend this film enough, in fact I have told anyone that would listen that they should absolutely give this film a try. I understand that this film may not be everybody's "cup of tea" but if you want to continue to see intelligent, well made science fiction instead of sequels to "Independence Day" these are the films that need our support. Also, how can you go wrong with any film starring Michael Shannon(the most criminally underrated actor not named Sam Rockwell)?

The plot in this film is very similar to several other science fiction films where a supernaturully gifted child is being persuid by people that seem to wish to cause him harm. I bought this dvd based upon the description on the case which sounded intriguing, and thought it would be a compelling adventure with some depth of character. It turned out it was a run of the mill science fiction movie that was entertaining but nothing special. I would recommend it only for fans of the genre, but there are many similar films that are much better.

This is a fantastic movie. It may not hit you right away, but it is an interesting take on science fiction. As a father only wishes to protect his son while others threaten him due to the child's ability to see another world. It is metaphorical and well written, it is all kinds of things and then some. It's just a nice little gem that I would recommend to anyone who likes Michael Shannon and to anyone who is sick of all the movies recently that are unoriginal.

This film barely makes ok for me. I know what it was trying to do but just did not accomplish it for me. It was trying to bring back the syfy movies of the 80's but films like fire starter with Drew Barrymore and star man with Jeff bridges opened your mind to wonder but a film like that now is much harder to pass off with so many syfy possibilities out there it bordered on boring except for the connections between father and son.

This movie was excellent. I had seen a trailer somewhere and it looked like a good episode from the X-files (when it was in its prime). Pleasantly surprised, its well written sci-fi, a mystery of sorts, and its the type of movie that leaves things open to your own imagination. What I mean is it doesn't give you all the answers straight forward. Highly recommended in world of recycled ideas and garbage this shines.

A boy and his father is the core of the story. People reacting to the young boy's special abilities and then the government as is usual in many of these types of films, believes he may be a threat. But it's the bond between the father and the son that makes the story special. And the ending is like a fairy tale that tells of a land so close and yet so far. I loved this film. Worth at least one viewing.

Jeff Nichols is one of the best young filmmakers today and this is his latest. It's so much more than an awesome sci-fi story and it is that. Michael Shannon and Kirsten Dunst are terrific as parents of a young boy with special powers, who are on the run from the government and a cult looking to exploit his powers. This movie did not get the recognition it deserves and you won't regret checking it out.

It surpassed my expectations! I never heard of this movie until Black Friday. A friend of mine told me he loved it so as soon as I saw BB had it on sale I bought it. I was bit doubtful but I love Michael Shannon so, I gave in. This was no mistake whatsoever. Simply loved it. A great mystery with a salt of drama that no one should miss!

The fact that you are showing interest at all in this film means you have heard about it in some way. If not and you are just browsing it is a film that asks more from us the viewer than just sitting down to watch a movie. Did you like Arrival and or Interstellar? Then this did into that same mold of really smart sci-fi.

Michael Shannon is one of the most under rated actors of our time. The rest of the cast is superlative. The plot, action, and suspense is well paced without being predictable. The story drives home the love between the father and son characters and what the dad will do to at all costs to protect his son.

This movie is mysterious and captivating. It'll hold you from start to end and leave you with a sense of wonder that you can only get by watching it. Jeff Nichols does a great job directing and, like his other movies, you will be entertained.

This is a smart, emotional and beautiful sci-fi movie. The characters are engaging and interesting. The acting is phenomenal. The story will suck you in and hold your attention throughout. I highly recommend this movie. I'd even recommend it to someone that's not quite a sci-fi fan.

This film is among some of my favorite of 2016. Great grounded sci-fi story, with elegant cinematography, and impressive visual effects. Ties loose ends while leaving enough room for thought. Perfect for lovers of independent filmmaking and science fiction films.

One of the better films this year. Did not waste my time or money going to see Superman vs Batman. Midnight Special along with The Witch & 10 Cloverfield Lane proves that you don't need to spend 100's of millions of dollars to make a movie. This movie is unique & original.

This movie didn't have a lot of fanfare, but it surprised me how engaging and well-acted it was. Jeff Nichols is a great director, and Michael Shannon seems to be in every movie of his, so their great report is to be expected, but the story was great and very intense.

This film is from the same writer/director as Shotgun Stories, Mud, and Loving. This is definitely his weakest film, but still very much worth a watch. Edgerton and Shannon give great performances, as usual. Nice quality audio and video on the blu-ray disc.

Midnight Special reminds me a lot of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T., and I think the director openly acknowledges he created an homage to those movies. I like those movies, and I think this movie did a good job of capturing the atmosphere of both.

A lot of details were missing. There wasn't enough background about the parents. How did the little boy get his powers? If it's simply because he was an alien, why didn't his parents have powers? I had too many questions when the movie ended.

I love Sci-fi movies. So when I saw the theatrical trailer, I immediately wanted to see this. The price was right, so I picked it up. It only comes with a single Blu-ray Disc and a digital code for the ultraviolet/VUDU. Does not contain an iTunes copy.
