Outstanding Gaming Laptop For The Money

There will be those who say Lenovo doesn't make real gaming computers (desktop or laptop), or that Lenovo doesn't know anything about making gaming computers, or that a laptop with a 5400rpm hard drive can't be considered a "true" gaming laptop. To all these naysayers, as well as those who, up front, wouldn't consider getting a Lenovo as a "gaming system", I say - IT'S TIME TO RECONSIDER.
Let me start off with the matter of the 5400rpm drive. I agree that a 5400rpm drive should NOT be used in a gaming system, laptop or otherwise...but, Lenovo isn't the only company doing this. There are other well-known brands...brands that are synonymous for their gaming computers (I won't "call them out" here, but a little research will turn them up easily enough)...that utilize 5400rpm drives. In reality, this is a moot point, as one of the first things any gamer would do is replace the hard drive with an SSD...and that's exactly what I did. Out went the Toshiba "hybrid" drive, and in went a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO...slow hard drive problem solved.
What about the memory? Again, any "true" gamer would balk at the slow 8GB of RAM installed. Well, just as easily as the hard drive problem is resolved, so is the memory. Out goes the factory-installed RAM, and in goes 16GB of speedy Corsair Vengeance RAM. Now we have a real gaming laptop...and, even with the additional cost of upgrading the RAM, it still comes in well below the cost of other gaming laptops, including those already coming with faster and/or a larger amount of RAM...which, by the way, would still require the SSD upgrade.
The only downside to the Lenovo Y50 Touch is the GPU. Truthfully, it's only a minor quibble, as the performance difference between the GTX 960M & the (newer) GTX 965M is somewhat negligible, and purchasing a laptop with a GTX 965M will cost considerably more. Even the most recent Lenovo Y700 laptops (the replacement for the Y50 Touch) still use the GTX 960M.
While the Y700 comes with an i7-6700HQ, which modestly outperforms (in many tests) the i7-4720HQ found in the Y50 Touch, there are also more than a few tests which show the i7-6700HQ performing only slightly better. When one considers the price of the Y700 (i7-6700HQ) against the Y50 Touch (i7-4720HQ), you can save yourself a lot of money by getting the Y50 Touch. Put another way, the Y50 Touch will give you the "best bang for the buck" when pitted against Lenovo's newer Y700. When pitted against other gaming laptops, the Y50 Touch only gets better.
Conclusion: If you're willing to spend a little extra money on upgrading the RAM (more, & faster), as well as some money on an SSD (which you'd probably be buying anyway), you will end up with a laptop that is better than others selling for the same final price. Against higher-end gaming laptops, yes, they will be faster, more powerful, have higher-end GPUs, and maybe even more memory, but you will also pay at least double what you'd pay for the Y50 Touch. If you're a gamer with "unlimited" funds, by all means, go ahead and get the $7,000 "gaming laptop powerhouse". On the other hand, if you're a gamer on a (somewhat) budget, and you want a fast/powerful laptop that can handle all but the most recent (ie. GPU power hungry) games, then you will be hard-pressed to find a better choice than the Lenovo Y50 Touch. Better hurry, before they're sold out.

I gave this 3 stars because it was a dud. The power supply quit within the first 2 weeks. However the computer rocked. It was fast with gaming and handled running multiple high graphic programs like a champ. I upgraded to the y70 after my issue and it's even better. The touch screens on these is a nice feature I never thought I'd use. I'd still recommend. I think my issue was a fluke. These computers rock.

I've had this laptop for a few months now and it is great. Fast, Games play great and smooth (for a gaming laptop), and looks great as well. Only complaints are the screen and battery. Colors don't pop out as much and you have to be centered to see a crisp picture. The battery goes by really fast, at top high performing settings, it will run out in about 2 hours. I had to buy a portable battery because of how frequent I had to look for an outlet to plug it in. Over all it is a very fast, good looking and performing laptop! A few setbacks, but a very good purchase

I am normal an Asus or HP person but seeing this as an open box buy, the price and what is included I could not pass. It helps me do my quick books for my business but allows me to work with Adobe creative Cloud when editing on the go! my client enjoy looking at there photos on the nice screen and able to flick through gallery with out a mouse. It does what I need it to do.

I'll start by saying that I bought this laptop for its specs. Fast processor and adequate RAM for what I needed (music production). With that being said it is a fast laptop and can handle a lot. No complaints there. The screen however... Upon buying the unit, a few months in the screen went out. Best buys protection (also very helpful) ended up providing me with a brand new unit. The new unit as soon as I turned it on had a smallish white dot on the screen where the screen is I guess "damaged". I have yet to take the laptop back in for repair due to the long process of Best Buy having to send my unit off for repair. I cannot afford the downtime of not having a laptop for school at this time. Pretty disipointed in the quality from Lenovo. Especially for paying around 1300 for this particular laptop. Overall it's a quick laptop and contains a lot of processing power which is awesome. The quality/ lack of longevity of the screen unfortunately negates most of the positive components from this unit. If you are going to drop a lot of money on a solid laptop, I would recommend another unit not by Lenovo.

So far so good. Plays games better than my aging gaming desktop. Beautiful screen on this laptop. Very quick. Could do without Win10, but the touch screen works very well with the OS. And I love the way the plug works on this laptop. Should last much longer than a normal power plug. My only complaint is the mouse button on the touchpad, you have to hit them in specific locations, the edges don't activate the button underneath.

I was looking for a replacement laptop and happened to see this one. It has the specifications that I was hoping to find. It is fast and very responsive. It handles all my games with ease. Love the touch screen which makes tasks easier. By the way, it doesn't hurt that it looks great too. Sleek styling with that awesome red backlit keyboard makes it look like it means business. Great buy!

First experience of this laptop was horrible! Screen malfunctioned within first week. Best Buy sent off for repairs, manufacturer decided to scrap the laptop. Replaced with brand new one at Best Buy with no hassle. No problems with this laptop except that it does get very warm/hot when played for extended periods.

Gaming laptop without being heavy weight

This laptop is good for those that want a dual purpose laptop. Gaming and typical laptop usage. It plays top games without a hitch but is light enough to be easily used as you would a normal laptop. I first demo'd a true gaming laptop but found it to be too heavy and bulky for my dual needs. I don't feel like I sacrificed much in gaming performance to have both needs. met.

This is my second Lenovo. Got the Y70 then went for the Y50. One for work one for home. I game, work, socialize, and surf the web. This is possible on just about any computer out there. However...Lenovo stepped it up and built something worthy. This computer has great styling, user friendly interface, also the feel was not forgotten. Quality of image is nothing to sleep on.

I was able to pick up this laptop as an openbox item for $650 + tax. Even at the current clearance price of $850 USD, this laptop is a good deal. You won't usually find a laptop with theses specs/pricepoint from a big retail store.
The 4th gen i7 processor and 2gb gtx960 graphics will perform well and be more than enough for most. Anyone who requires more processing power and graphics performance would be looking for machines at much higher prices.
I my only gripe with the product is the finish/material chosen for the palmrest area. It's a matte surface that collects fingerprints/smudges very easily. I purchased a vinyl skin online for a few dollars and that solved the problem.

Got this for our youngest daughter. She is into games, videos, and word processing. This computer is very FAST; it has a great deal of RAM. The only issue she has faced with it is that the Windows 10 operating system was missing plug-ins for external devices. The software would load, but the computer wouldn't recognize the device. After the Geek Squad downloaded the plug-ins, she was able to use the devices.
