This is one of Araki's more serious and probably his most important film. The subject matter makes is tough to watch at times, but the performances are amazing (especially Gordon-Levitt and Corbet). This special edition is what long-time fans of the film deserve!

Mysterious Skin, based off of the Scott Heim novel, follows the stories of two boys-- Brian Lackey and Neil McCormick-- as they embark on their lives based around an event that happened in their childhood. I won't spoil it, but understand straight up that this is not for the light hearted and can be very triggering. The acting in the movie is phenomenal. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in one of his best performances here as Neil. Brady Corbet shines too in his own role as Brian. Bill Sage, Michelle Trachtenberg, Jeffrey Licon, and Elizabeth Shue are all just wonderful as is the rest of the cast. Gregg Araki has a director's eye that fits perfectly in the world Scott Heim created, and he creates some very beautiful cinematography. I haven't had the privilege of seeing very many of his films, but I would bet that this is one of his best. The score is understated in the most haunting way so very much kudos to Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie. The best part of this movie is that it doesn't pull any punches when dealing with the subject matter and manages to present it in a realistic light. The way Araki managed to cut together the film without allowing the young child actors (George Webster and Chase Ellison) to be aware of the disturbing subject matter is something to be absolutely commended.

Superlative Movie - Not For Everyone

This is a mind-blowing movie that is superbly directed and incredibly acted -- and yet, when you say, "It's a movie about pedophilia," a lot of people will move away. How wrong they are. This movie does not condone pedophilia, and portrays the victims of it in a real, direct, sincere way. Two kids have shared the horror of being molested, and they grew up in very different way: one is a soulless individual, the other one is someone who needs answers. Gregg Araki is on top of his game, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is mesmerizing. A sublime movie, too good to be ignored.

Great movie. I've watched it many times and still cry. Lives of two boys were screwed up forever by a sick pervert. It is a sad touch of the reality of life.
