Wireless adapter won't stay connected

The device seems to "sleep" and forget the network it is attached to. Every time I have to use the computer, I have to go through the start up procedures and reconnect to the network each time, included a very long password. Tech support told me it should not do that, but it does every time. Windows does not see the USB connection, and attempting to diagnose the problem fails every time. I
