Was unable to get this router to work on any band except 60 Ghz which meant no existing devices would connect to it.

More than just a Router

The new R9000 is a very powerful router with many additional network capabilities. I have over 25 devices connected - 3 computers, 2 Roku-based TVs, Roku-3, cell phones, printers, NAS storage, Kindle Fire, etc. They all run without interruption, including streaming 4K content from Netflix, etc. The only drawback I've seen is the need to (sometimes) re-boot the router after a configuration change, in order to re-connect one of the wireless printers.
The PLEX server was my main reason for upgrading to the R9000. (Now, I no longer need to keep a PLEX server running on one of my computers.) The PLEX server is easily supporting over 2,500 videos, 24,000 photos, and 2,000 music tracks.
I have two 4-TB USB drives connected to the R9000. In effect, the R9000 is functioning as a pair of high-speed NAS storage devices.
The R9000 is too expensive for just a router. But considering that it includes a dedicated PLEX server and two NAS storage units, it is well worth the price! And, it is ready for whatever else I ask of it.

Knowing the spec, seeing is a "wow"

I am very lucky to be selected as a beta user, and I am providing my unbiased review since opening the box.
As a fan of Star Wars, seeing the router puts a smile on my face. At first when you look at the image it was not impressive due to it's size, but soon you will realize that it would be a good piece to put next to your collections. The antenna are lid up, gives you sense that it is with the "force" and the range is pushed to infinity and beyond......
Installation: I have a Motorola cablemodem and Comcast as service provider (yucks) and I use the internet to stream my 4K movies. The installation requires you to download an app, which I think is redundant as you will need a PC to complete the setup later (huh?). Once complete the setup the app is just a screen tells you your SSID and password. One feature "factory reset" I didn't believe to be usefil but I had to use it because the connection died next day after setting it up. With my previous WNDR4300 I had trouble with using automatic detection with my Motorola cable modem so I had to do everything manual. X10 is no different. I had to use the app, failed the auto-detect, entered all DNS and all that manually to finally make it to work. I blame it on the cable modem and/or Comcast (as they always tell me my equipment is out of date after 3 month of purchase). Its been 3 days and seems fine after the factory reset and go through the setup again.
Speed: All my benchmark has been showing very fast downloading / uploading and maxed out all reading. YAY!
Range: you can throw your range extension devices away
Value: a buck for a buck. Despite the spec and speed as mentioned before, the "wow" factor is not just for the computer, but for your / friends visual aspect as well.

Excellent Signals, Flawless Streaming, Love it

I was lucky to have this router as a beta user since July. love it. I mainly use it for streaming and gaming. Replaced my r7000 with this one. Set it up in the basement, most my devices are on 2nd floor, still they are getting excellent signals and no drops in speeds.
the new features that i like most about this router are Amazan Cloud feature and Plex feature. I am easily able to back up to Amazon Cloud from storage device that is connected to the Router.
Overall after using it for months , I am very happy, and i believe it's worth buying if you interested in upgrading to a new router.
Only thing i was not able to test is AD feature as i dont have any AD devices.

setup easy - did it by connecting to wireless and using the routerlogin.net interface. This can also be done with the Netgear U app, and the Netgear Genie app. I connected with Genie and it works as expected from prior experience.
Plex- easy install. It requires a USB drive directly attached to the router. I was hoping to be able to use my Netgear NAS device, but it requires a USB drive directly attached. I tested streaming XVID, MP4, MKV files, both SD and HD. Streaming MP4 worked very well, both SD and HD. It was not able to play the XVID and MKV files. This may have been due to my older USB drive
Cloud backup
I set up my Amazon Drive account to sync files from the attached USB drive to the cloud service. This worked well, it was a bit slow, but this is really expected for a background sync operation. It also may be due to my slower USB 2.0 drive. Additionally, I uploaded a file to Amazon cloud through the GUI interface to test syncing back to my local USB drive
It provides a status, in the form of percentage complete. No information or logging beyond that
Downloader
Set this up for torrents, and downloaded an ISO file. The setup and features had everything I would expect, with the execption of an SSL requirement. Downloaded occurred at reasonable speeds
All in all, this router is simple to use and reliable. The additional features are pretty well done, and would be very useful. The limitations of file format for the Plex server, and the requirement to use direct attached USB drive instead of a NAS device for the storage means I won't be using these features. If you just need a router I would not recommend this one. If you're looking for added features in a media server and a share hosted off the router, this device is going to be a good value. It is very convenient to have this in one spot, and the integration is well done and simple to use, it just doesn't fit with my current setup
Full disclosure: I received this device free as part of Netgear's First Look Review Program

The nighthawk x10 is the latest from Netgear nighthawk series. This router has 3 bands, the regular 2.4ghz, 5ghz and the new 60ghz band. Not sure if there's any devices that are out right now to support 60ghz yet but this router is ready. Setting up this router is easy, if you've own any netgear router before, setting up is the same. There a printed sticker right on top of the router with the SSID name and pass that you can connect to. Once you're conntected to it, go to routerlogin.net to configure all the necessary settings. On to the performance, oh my does this thing have range. I connected to the 2.4ghz band and walked outside of my house about 500 ft and it still connected. I also have a plex server set up on my Netgear ReadyNas, this thing stream high def movies without a hickup. This router is the business for sure, ready to stream 4k and VR gaming. I don't a VR rig setup so I can't test out how well this works but I'm sure it can handle it. Overall, awesome router, best Netgear have offer so far.

I have this router since July as a beta tester and I can say: at the beginning this router was rock solid stable. I can’t believed that it was beta product. I had many routers in the past and always I had problems with my wireless devices and with my IPTV box, but not at this time. I was able to test many version of beta firmware delivered by Netgear during beta test period and I can say they did best to make this router stable and reliable. This is not the regular router as You can see on many shop shelf. This is the monster router with tons of features unavailable on other devices. Plex media streaming sever, Amazon backup, Cloud, 4 core 1.7GHz extremely fast processor, 1GB of DDR3 RAM!! 10Gbit port, 6 x 1Gbit LAN ports with port aggregation, 60Gbit Wireless AD network, Mu-Mimo, 160Mhz HT160, Parental control not only for entire network but for particular devices connected to your network, active (improved) antenna’s with beautifully shining blue light, fantastic range on all WiFi networks. You want to download files from torrent or emule? no problem, all options are available in this baby. I’m not the person who is buying average stuff for my network and looking for upgrade after few months. This is feature-proof router worth the price for pleasure of usability and performance.

Greatest Router and Plex Server!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Let me start off talking about the set up I had before the X10. I had an old NETGEAR router and a plex server running off of my network storage device. The router worked ok, with very few hic-ups, but the network storage device ran PLEX horribly.
I was at the point were I would just transfer a movie / video to a thumb stick, instead of streaming through the NAS. Quality was horrible within my network and even worse when I was remote.
I was lucky enough to be a part of the first look program to receive the x10, and it has completely changed my opinion on plex. I am now transcoding at 1080p through my ROUTER. I just have a simple WD passport plugged into my x10 and it runs perfectly (within network and remote). It takes up much less space than my previous set up too.
It was much easier to set up than the NAS server. A router set up is usually always the same, but in my experience, my Plex servers have always taken more effort than it should. The x10 took no longer than 10 minutes to set up with Plex. All you have to do is enable it on routerlogin.net.
Overall, a near perfect experience with the x10. Plug, Play, and Watch! Can't wait to get more content on my new Plex router!

I always run 2 routers on my home network. 1 main router in my office at far end of house and 1 router used as a wired access point placed in the middle of my basement. My main router is a Netgear R8500 and my wired access point router is a Netgear R8000. Now my new R9000 X10 will be my main router and my Netgear R8500 will be my wired access point. The new R9000 X10 worth every dollar, easy setup, packed with features. I have the fastest internet speed available in my area. In speed test my R8500 was getting 185 mhps down and 12 mhps up. The new R9000 with the quad core processor is getting 240 mhps down and 13 mhps up. I purchased this router for one reason the future of wireless VR gaming then the AD60 network will be needed for wireless VR. This the best AD router out there. There are a few more brands available for less money, but the only have a dual core processor and do not have all the available connections that the Netgear has. I am a high tech person and this is well worth the future investment.

I needed to update my network from the Apple Extreme to something that will handle the speed of what I pay for from my ISP. The R9000 is awesome! Easy set-up, super fast, awesome range! I paired it with an EX8000 and now my entire home has lightening fast coverage!

Amazing Setup and Speed!

With this router (and a new modem) every single device connects flawlessly and at higher speeds than the plan I have. I am on a 300/20 plan, every wired pc (2), MacBook Pro (1), iPad (3) iPhone (2), homePod (2), Apple TV (1), Amazon Fire (1), and several other devices connect at amazing efficiency and speed. I CONSISTENTLY get 340/24 speeds even at peak evening hours. I tried the Nighthawk R8000P with a Arris modem and could only get int the 260/20 range no matter how much I adjusted settings. Exchanged for the Netgear 24X8 3.0 modem and the Nighthawk X10 - and as stated everything has been performing fantastic for a over a week. The range is great for my condo (2000sqf) and no interference from numerous neighbors. I was hesitant at first because of the cost, but this has been a good investment.

Great Router for large home networks

I have been testing this router for the past month and it has blown me away with its speed and capabilities. I figured my last router, since it had gigabit ports, would be able to handle traffic as well as anything else out there in the market. But using this router I can see why having a high performance Quad Core CPU inside of the router makes such a big difference. I am a Systems Engineer so I have a small lab at my house with a couple Virtual Servers running about 20 vms, an iSCSI FreeNAS host, and a Media Library. On top of that we have desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, cameras, and a bunch of home automation systems running on the network in different VLANS both wired and wireless. This router handles all of the traffic without any hiccups
.
Some of my favorite features on this device is the ability to VPN into my house network through the router. No more random ports left open for RDP or VNC, instead I can keep my network more secure. I also took advantage of the 10G port to connect to my media server and the Aggregated Links to my switches and now I have flawless streaming of local content. I also love how easy it is to create a guest wireless for my friends and family when they come and visit, and then disable it when they leave.
One thing I wish this router had though was SNMP so I could monitor the status of the router with other tools instead of needing to connect to the console. It is by far the best router I have ever used at my house and I recommend it to everyone I work with that is looking for a new router.

Reliability, Availability, and Performance

I recently purchased this router 2 weeks ago after replacing three (3) Netgear RAX 80 routers that continued to fail within 24 hours because they could not hold a 5 ghz radio signal and performance dropped. I did not know much about the X10 as I was focused upon being on the "Bleeding" edge of technology. So I took a chance and ordered this from Best Buy as they were fantastic with customer service on the past three routers. Plugged in the X10, routerlogin came up, defined the SSID's and the passwords, and we were functional. Since that time, this router has stayed up without any issues. This has functions, I may not use but would be useful in the future or to the high tech person. It has a 10gig port to be used either for data transfer or could be to set up as 10gig WAN environment with your cable modem. Lots of ports to connect the storage devices and if you are a Plex fan, you can set it up as a Plex server. My wife and I use our desk tops and laptops through out the home and we stream to 4 TV's. Works great in a 2 story 2550 sq foot home. Learned my lesson and went for the steady reliable performer. If reliability, avaiability, and performance are your goals and are a priority, this is the router for you. All this brings is no hassels and no aggravation. Good luck with your choices.

I bought this router to help get the full potential of my internet speed. I am using a surfboard 6190 modem and purchased 200mbps a month from Time Warner. With this router it helps me exceed the speeds I pay for. I am reaching 234mbps download. Before this router I was getting 25mbps. I highly recommned this especially if you have a large family. We have connected a laptop, two phones, two kindle fires, amazon fire stick, iPad, PS4, and a iPod touch. very easy to set up and overall, I'm very satisfied.
