Customers are saying

Customers are impressed with NHL 19's gameplay, controls, and realism, frequently praising its ease of use and improved skating mechanics. Many also enjoyed the online play and appreciated the new features added to the game. However, some criticisms were raised regarding slow roster updates and the effectiveness of poke checks in online play. Overall, the positive feedback on gameplay and features outweighs the negative comments.

NHL 19 finally improves the feel of skating and checking, which haven't felt quite right since NHL 14. Gameplay feels much improved compared to the last few years. However, the game still has many issues. Poke checking and stick lifting continue to be abused when playing online; they're too effective and it ruins the pacing of a game. Speaking of online, input lag and poor peer to peer connections continue to ruin the majority of matches, even if you have a high quality connection yourself. I find this isn't the case as often with Madden, but it continues to plague NHL year after year. Roster updates continue to be too slow/inaccurate (as opposed to Madden's weekly updates). Commentary is fine, but not dynamic like in Madden and NBA 2K so it feels antiquated. The player models are terrible except for the occasional star player they scanned correctly. The graphics, sound, and presentation are in a serious need of updating. There continues to be no story mode like other sports franchises have been adding the past few years and all you're left with is a shallow-feeling Be a Pro mode from last generation. The new World of Chel modes like Ones (1 v 1 v 1 hockey on a pond) or returning Threes (fast paced arcade hockey) are nice additions and can be fun to change things up. However, I can't help but feel too many resources go into these minor things that most players aren't even looking for instead of focusing on the core experience. Passing is one area that feels in need of an upgrade; rarely does the mechanic execute the way I want it to when in the offensive zone or rushing on a breakout. There never seems to be enough time/space to incorporate the D players in the offensive zone either, as the cpu instantly cuts off any shot or pass you try to organize from the point. Gameplay definitely improved, but it still doesn't feel as fun as it used to. I've played every NHL since 2004, and it just isn't hitting those same highs like some of those older games. If you're into hockey, this year's game brings back some of the fun with the improvements to skating and checking, but just know that many more improvements need to be made for this series to return to its former glory.

Enjoying the gameplay and also some of the customization features. Love the franchise mode playing several seasons now. Very similar to 18 but for the price i got it totally worth it. A worthy purchase for your hockey fix.. would buy again looking forward to 2020, great service as always from best buy.

They have definitely made some Improvements this year on nhl. EA has done wonders with this game. If you are a hockey fan or learning, this game would help you out. Reason for 4 star review is be a use the be a pro mode, you create a character of you get penalties it makes it extremely difficult to increase your rating to NOT be penalized after you've lost experience.

I bought this on release date and I have to say for the first time in years, I can’t stop playing. The fun factor and controls are very fluid. I’m greatly enjoying my season mode and 3 on 3 arcade style again! I would recommend this year’s version so far!

It's been years since I've taken part in an EA NHL game. I believe Heatley (Thrashers uniform) was the cover on the last version I owned so I've been quite a bit out of touch. The general game play is superb and the Skill Stick controls are much more user friendly than I was expecting. I initial was playing in Hybrid as I was halfway between wanting to use '94 contols and Skill Stick. I now know I wasted my time with it. Using two buttons basically and the sticks is so much easier. My son and I habe a great time messing around with the Threes game and I very much enjoy the play as a pro feature. My one frustration is HUT. I am not one for microtransactions so packs and players don't come often enough for my play style. Perhaps it's simply the aging gamer in me but when it comes to the online games it's not much more than a pile of frustration as the teams loaded with the cards in the 90+ steamroll me to no end. I should probably give it a 5 stars because it is a solidly entertaining game but the shortcomings of HUT and the reliance of microtransactions to build and maintain a competative team (for my level of gaming ability) do detract from a perfect score.

Great gameplay, tight controls, really well animated. The game has an insane amount of customization from the control scheme to the player / team loadouts. Easy to learn, difficult to master, but you'll enjoy every hour for sure.

Really love the job EA does with these games. You can adjust the settings to have realistic NHL style games or change them and play a faster arcade type version. I do wish at some point they would just offer roster updates for a small fee after a year as the game doesn't really change much from year to year.

Finally NHL has stepped it up. Great gameplay. True penalties being called. Can’t overdo it. One slight change that would be great for in game atmosphere is authentic stadium hockey sounds in between plays. Goal horns are true.

I had skipped NHL 2018after enjoying NHL 2017, and was pleasantly surprised with some of the gameplay improvements since then. There is a grea set of features for more casual play with the World of CHEL, allowing yo to customize a player and complete in multiplayer evens such as ones, threes, or casual and competitive 6 on 6 hockey. I've enjoyed some of these modes but have been hit with some latency challenges where it makes it difficult to stay effective in the match despite having very strong internet at home. The introductory and training modes are absolutely amazing.. they had me learning how to better use the aiming and skill stick better than ever, as well as some of the mechanics for face offs. All of this is important as playing the be a pro mode requires you to use skills of all sorts to maximize points. I would say this feels like an iterative year even jumping two years, but a very solid experience. I feel like NHl is overdue to expand the pro mode into something akin to the Journey in FIFA, but that's a wish list item for me.

A really fun game, good graphics, and easy to learn controls. Built in game hints help you evolve into a better player over time and then the hints help you learn more difficult maneuvers.

This is one of the most exciting updates to an EA game I have seen in awhile. If you have gotten used to the "Roster Updates" every year you will like the freshness of this game. I play mainly in Franchise mode and that has a lot of updates in it giving it a fresh feel. But also for the first time I am really enjoying playing online either in 3's or as a whole team. I highly recommend this one, of course hockey fans will enjoy, but even non-hockey fans should be able to enjoy the richness of this game. (Think of FIFA, I am not a soccer guy but enjoy playing FIFA) Great effort by EA.

More of the same, but still an enjoyable experience. The overhaul to scouting in franchise mode is nice. EASHL is still fun. I like the changes to classes and customization. AI is still subpar and the menu system needs work.

Solid upgrade from past versions, but disappointed that Legends are advertised as if you can put them on their original teams when they are only available in play now on “legend teams” not useable in season or franchise mode
