This is the 4th system I have purchase to install for a customer and every single one of them is working solid. I would definitely recommend this unit to anybody who needs a system with remote connection and local storage.

beware of the Night Owl X mobile app!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Night Owl - why did you change the mobile app? The old Night Owl HD app worked great, and allowed full control over the networking settings. The newer Night Owl X app forces you to log into a cloud server and then routes your video surveillance traffic through it. Beware - your video is now sent through Night Owl's cloud server on Amazon AWS and who knows who can see it? The mobile app also connects to some strange Chinese Internet sites for some odd reason. The inability to connect directly to your Night Owl DVR and instead have the traffic routed through who-knows-where is a HUGE security and privacy issue! Please bring back the advanced networking options, Night Owl. Port forwarding is not rocket science. Other than that, the DVR has worked great for a few weeks now, and the app (risky as it to use) works very well. No performance issues noted. Unit seems more ventillated and yet more compact. Image quality is good - with the 1080p cameras, I don't see an improvement despite the "Extreme HD" claim. Most of the negative reviews online are concerning the Night Owl X app. Fix this, and make it fully configurable again, and this will be a decent product.

They are two different applications which are used for different Night Owl System. Also, remote connectivity is handled via P2P and is a secure connection.
