Amazing 360 camera, apps need work

I received the camera just before leaving for five day bike ride, so I didn't have time to test it and learn the apps before leaving. I set my preferences using the app on my phone, but otherwise controlled the camera manually while traveling -- that was mostly to avoid distraction and preserve battery life. The camera worked great, and I've no complaints about the images -- yes, some of the stitching can be seen, but that isn't a big deal to me.
From what I've used, my only complaint is about the desktop app -- it is very slow, has limited functionality, and is not intuitive. In short, it needs major work. For the most part, instead of the desktop app, I've edited the videos with CyberLink PowerDirector 15. It works fine with the 360 video files. Still looking for an app that works well with the 360 image files.

I am so frustrated. I sold my Theta S 360 camera to get this one. I have been super excited to get this & got it yesterday. I can't even get the Bluetooth or wifi to sync. I know what I'm doing, just a garbage app & buggy software on camera. I've read some reviews online & other people are having the same problem. Some of the sample pictures people have posted aren't even that good. The stitching looks terrible. I totally regret getting rid of my Theta S. This Keymission 360 has to go back. Wtf?!? Ughh. Researching this online, you realize all the positive feedback & comments ...........are from Nikon.

lots of software bugs to sort, top notch hardware

So, everyone is complaining about the pairing process and some of the software and they're right. It wasnt easy. The way i got mine to pair easy was to get the camera and phone AWAY from any other bluetooth devices around that might confuse the camera during pairing process, and i started form scratch again; erased bluetooth profile on my phone that the camera installed when i tried the previous times ( "forget this device") , restarted the app, turned camera off and on and then it paired right away. This is obviously a software update thing that will get sorted, nothing more. the app is slow to communicate but it all works. they'll have to sort out the download times to the iPhone/device, use some better compression or something. Also, it needs to download to the phone letting it know its a "pano" so that it goes into that folder and things like facebook recognize it as such so that you can upload it to FB as a 360 vid. Just like all the panos form the iPhone FB recognizes them and makes the 360 when you upload.
hardware: heres where you can forget about the software issues knowing they'll get sorted with updates. the hardware is the better 360 image I've seen yet. Ive looked at 360fly, ricoh and sensing. The only one that compares os the samsung but you need a samsung phone, so thats that. and even then the nikon is better color, better flare handling and better exposure control IMO.
there also seem to be some confused buyers here. this IS NOT AN ACTION CAMERA LIKE A GOPRO. this is a 360 camera... that can be used for action, but its not in the same category as the much smaller types like go pros that dont do 360. These are dedicated 360 cameras that require much bigger hardware in order to accomplish 360 recording. The only one thats smaller is the Ricoh and thats because they use much smaller lenses and sensors, and it suffers for it and even that one is still much larger than any juts-action-camera out there. basically, they CANT be as small as a juts-action-camera, period. so if you thought you were buying a gopro, you didn't do much homework on what a 360 camera is and does.

Easy to take pictures, not to share

I was very excited to read about the KeyMission. Nikon has a great reputation for quality lenses and quality products. The hardware is great. The software needs some serious effort. Hopefully, a firmware update will solve most of the issues, as this camera has great potential. Not sure I want to risk $500 on the off chance that Nikon will fix the issue or existing customers vs. developing a future version which works.
The good:
-Nikon imaging is great. I've taken shots in all sorts of lighting. In every case, the shots come out well. The tone is balanced and very usable.
-The app works with all portable devices, not just Galaxy S7's, I used it on my iPad (iOS 10.1) & older Samsung Android phone. In both cases, I connected to the camera without issue.
-Love the removable SD card, allowing for faster transfer to a PC at the end of the day.
-Build quality seems very strong. I like that this is water proof, unlike the Ricoh or Samsung.
- Image stability is very good. Stays stable, when walking or driving with the camera.
- One button access to take pictures or video without going through lots of menu options.
The Bad:
- When you share to Facebook, there's no 360 tag in the photo. The only way you can share the pictures or video as 360 is to use a PC.
- Transferring photos and video from the camera to a phone is very slow. It's slower than the portable router / WiFi media sharing hub I have for $30. I expected way better from a $500 camera.
- The battery drains very quickly. This may be due to Bluetooth LE or long time outs before shutting down. It doesn't seem to be related to picture taking, as it drains just as fast whether I take pictures or not.
There's lots of room for improvements to the software. I hope Nikon reads these reviews, sees the slow sales, and determines that they need to get their software engineers in gear if they don't want to have a massive write off!

Great camera with a few fixable quirks

Overall I am happy with the camera. 360 video and images are clear and camera design seems rugged and solid. I mainly purchased this camera over competitors due to it being waterproof and full 360 with 2 cameras which i like better than the single camera style used on the 360fly and others.
I installed firmware #1.2 right away and have had no issues with the connection between my LGV20 and the camera.
I was dissapointed with the underwater lenses reducing the field of view and leaving a black ring in the image. I dont remember seeing anything about this in the reviews. I hope they will release some less obstructive lenses or possibly just automatically crop out the black ring thru a future firmware update.
The only issue I am having is with video recording stopping unexpectedly that I believe is caused by an old memory card that isn't fast enough to keep up.
Other than that, I think a future update needs to eliminate the camera recording or taking pictures automatically when turning it on. I've had to delete a bunch of garbage images taken when turning the camera on to connect to my phone. I'm sure there will be better 360 cameras in the future, but right now I feel this is the best 360 action camera available.

Great Hardware Awful Software and zero support

I have almost $700 into this camera and it is an absolute nightmare to use in anything other than the nikon software to get it to be viewable. Saving to Youtube does not make it possible to work as a 360 video on youtube or facebook. I think the camera is great, but the support that nikon has offered on the software side is absolutely pathetic and nearly renders the camera unusable unless you want to edit the metadata manually with every single video or photo, and lets face it almost everyone using this thing will only edit it for time and expect the upload to work out of the box. I purchased this with the hope that nikon would live up to its good reputation. So far they have failed, and I haven't received any type of software update that addresses the issues. After spending this kind of money on an action camera, why am I still waiting? Or is this segment of your customers completely unimportant?

Really disappointed!

I had high hopes for this camera and really wanted to like it, but my hopes were dashed!
I'm addicted to 360 photography, I got hooked with Google's photospheres for use on Google Street View on a Nexus phone but it's time consuming and you can end up with some minor stitching errors. But it started my quest for a one button solution.
My first try was a Richo Theta that disappointed me enough to send it back. I blamed the poor image quality on the low res sensors. It worked pretty well, buy it just wasn't what I hoped for.
So, I decided to get a wide angle lens and pano mount for my Sony A6000 and post process the results. The image quality was great, but we were back to a very time consuming process.
Then I saw the future in the form of the KeyMission.... The sensor was almost twice the resolution of the Theta and the samples from Nikon (the one or two I could find) looked pretty good.
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I was able to connect to the camera easily from my Pixel XL (yeah, I'm a early adopter of technology), but the initial results were super disappointing (not great lighting, but good enough for my cheap Canon point and shoot).
I'm going to give this camera a week or so to impress me and if it does I'll update my review, but right now the opinion is that it's going back.

It's true it's picky with the app.. but I've figured it out and it doesn't give me problems. So far it's been the easiest cam for the quality that it puts out... it's waterproof and weatherproof which is a big plus to me.

Where to Begin

I took this unit home excited to have a camera that worked as well as a go pro that was 360 HD ACTION. What I got was a camera that struggled to capture 10 seconds of video and alot of headaches. The software you are required to use is the problem. Its like they tried to make a non functional UI. The camera took great stills although the stitching could have been a little better. As a video camera it was useless. The geotags were not transferred to google streetview and the camera is not a compatible device with street view. If you want a great 360 video camera buy something else.

I have been super hesitant thus far in getting a 360 camera. I was really tempted by the Gear 360. When I saw Nikon releasing the camera after probably a year of working on it, I figured I'd buy it. However, I received it yesterday. The pairing process wasn't terrible. However, the battery seems to die out super rapidly. Its 50% after being on for 10 minutes not doing anything. In addition, I bought this camera to be able to share the 360 experience with everyone. I'd like to be able to share 360 content on Facebook or Youtube. However, this camera doesn't even support the format Facebook requires. I messaged Nikon and commented on their links yesterday, but they have yet to respond. I'm likely going to return this piece of garbage and get myself a camera that is actually 360 compatible. The results I get from this camera I could get from a 360 photo app on my iPhone.

Hey Techtraveler - In regard to sharing your videos on social media sites such as Facebook, you can use the Nikon KeyMission 360/170 Utility. Once you have opened the video in the Utility, click on the Edit tab and then Save for YouTube. It will add the necessary tags that both YouTube and Facebook require to view 360 content.

few hints for unhappy customers, Just Follow the instruction carefully, the camera turned off after 30 sec, you have to turn on and it can be set to turn off after 5 min, if you have to re-pair make sure to go to the sitting/bluetooth on your cellphone and forget the camera, otherwise it will failed to pair, make sure to hold the record button down for 3 sec to turn it on or off.

I bought this in spite of all the negative wifi disconnect reviews. Updated my iphone on 4/23/18. Wifi wont work. 3hrs on customer support where they had no record of this problem- like i was the outside consultant explaining the problem. No regard for my time. No Date for an apple app update as they hadn’t requested an update yet. I believe Nikon is killing this product based upon their indifference to maintaining the app. I may spend more on a gopro or garmin product, but the time i save on a stable platform is worth it. Black eye for the Nikon family. Run away as fast as you can.

The poor reviews discouraged prior interest, but as a long time Nikon user I took a risk and tried it out. Other than its slow startup pairing with a smart device I was impressed with the end result: an interactive photo/video easily uploadable to social media! Perfect for travels and theme park memories!

Buyer Beware - $500 Paperweight. Useless
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I have owned Nikon equipment since 1981 and have never been disappointed until now. I pre-ordered this camera and over the months I have owned it is only paired with my Apple iPhone twice to allow me to take four photos. According to the Nikon Help Line the Nikon 360 Snap Bridge App is incompatible with the Apple 10.2.1 IOS. They will only tell me that they are "working on it" They offer no solution or return option. They have shrugged off responsibility and placed in it Best Buy's hands which is not fair to the retailer. They purchased the product in good faith just like I did assuming that the product would work as advertised. On any other product the issue with the app not working with my phone or iPad would not be a big deal. But you cannot make changes to the camera settings or see the view of the camera without the SnapBridge app. A fan of Nikon that has spent tens of thousands of dollars on their products is very disappointed in this $500 paperweight. Think twice before hitting that "buy" button or picking one off the shelf to take to the register.
