Be aware the DG551 has been updated
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Just so you know Ninja has updated the DG551 with a lesser air fry basket from the deep black ceramic to a stainless steel basket that does not real fit. Best buy and Ninja website does not show any changes to the basket or any new pictures of the new basket. It's not even in the replacement part that you can order. I'm just surprised there is not updated pictures with the stainless steel air fry basket. If I had known that my purchase of the product might have changed. But any way just want people to know your not getting what is pictured on both best buy and Ninja website.

Ninja’s Grill does the work, you take the credit
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ninja - Foodi Smart XL 6-in-1 Countertop Indoor Grill with Smart Cook System, 4-quart Air Fryer The Smart XL Grill manages to take the core feature of every Air Fryer, super-heated moving air, and create a multi-purpose cooking tool. It can grill food with all the markings for a large group, roast/broil/bake a significant sized multi-serving of any protein, and, of course, Air Fry. And it does it all with repeat accuracy because of its built in thermometer. Although Ninja’s Air Fryers are usually really easy decisions for our family, this newest Smart Grill requires more thought. Some features we loved. Some were a challenge. OPERATION: If you already own any of Ninja’s Foodi countertop air fryers you know how little effort is involved getting underway cooking. For first time owners, grab the Quick Start Guide. Starting with the most unique feature, pull out the thermometer from its storage area. If you want to take advantage of the programmed cooking, first select a COOK FUNCTION (Grill, Air Crisp, Roast, Bake, Broil. Dehydrate) and press the THERMOMETER/PRESET BUTTON. Now use the RIGHT ARROWS to select your protein and the LEFT ARROWS to choose doneness. PRE-HEAT should be underway. Stick your thermometer into the protein. Wait until ADD FOOD appears on the screen. The screen now read out progress towards doneness. It also provides real time readings of the temperature once you’re underway. FLIPPING appears during ROAST and GRILL and you probably follow that instruction. When done, GET FOOD appears and you’re ready to let food rest for a few minutes. During cooking I measured the sound level with my uncalibrated Sound Meter App. It confirmed what my ears told me. 72dB. A bit loud, and far louder than Ninja’s other, more traditional Air Fryers. RESULTS: A premium piece of BEEF TENDERLOIN, cooked to my special request of MEDIUM, came out text-book medium. Sometimes these settings (RARE, MEDIUM, etc) will have multiple levels. I should have stopped at the first choice. However, I got exactly what I asked for. It was minimal effort to get my “order.” After the initial setup, I was free to prepare other side dishes without further interaction with my steak. It becomes apparent that the now very hot grill will very quickly cook any veggies you toss in. You can cut out another pan. Next up is a piece of PORK TENDERLOIN, which we know should only be cooked to just barely medium to keep moist. After about a 7 minute preheat the total cook time was under 10 minutes. Sadly, I didn’t trust it could be cooked and tried to figure out how to restart. Dumb. After a few minutes of trying to convince the Ninja to let me add some minutes, I relented and stuck my own instant thermometer into the pork. Yikes. I was already well past medium. The Ninja is shockingly fast. Trust it. But verify with your own thermometer if you are unsure. RECOMMENDATION: Ninja Air Fryers offer a broad array of useful and effective features. This Smart XL 6-N-1 is no different. It simplifies cooking by taking over the timing, the temperature setting, the schedule of flips and final rest period. It gets it all accomplished correctly by measuring the cooking progress. It gets it right with few exceptions. The flexibility is also well done. This new design and layout expands the quantity and size of foods that can be cooked successfully. The cooking chamber is huge. The space under the cover allows for maximum serving sizes and quantities. What are my quibbles? This is Ninja’s noisiest Air Fryer. It will interrupt the party. I also question the efficiency of this Ninja as food size or quantity gets smaller. The lengthy pre-heat time for this larger device makes the decision to use this for a pair of hamburgers or small steaks questionable. If I were to make a suggestion, I’d like to see more “doneness” or target temperature increments. For these smaller items it makes sense to allow a more nuanced doneness choice. On the other hand, pork loin, chicken breast or cut up whole chicken, a roast all become a treat to cook on this really smart countertop grill. It seems to contribute both hands and eyes to meal preparation. With such heat and speed availability, completing a vegetable dish after the protein is completed is a realistic expectation. You can immerse yourself in other activities knowing Ninja has the protein portion well covered. I like it, because what it does, it does really well.

Cooking with the Foodi is just cool!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ninja - Foodi Smart XL 6-in-1 Countertop Indoor Grill with Smart Cook System, 4-quart Air Fryer I will just come out and say it, I am not a chef. Going a bit farther I can barely make my way around cooking. And because of that I keep my cooking to a select few essentials and seldom deviate from that. It was always my dream to have a simple cooking system so even I can make a real tasty meal without messing it up. I cooked a grilled chicken with the Foodi for my first test that was better than I ever had before. It was with no stress and it cooked correctly, quickly and boy was it juicy. I followed that up with fish, pork and I will be trying a steak next. For many people that's an everyday event, not for me. For me to be comfortable cooking and getting the results I did was amazing. The included cookbook is great and I will tackle some of those recipes later but for now I am impressed. It’s nice to have a temperature probe to assure me all along the way that I was doing ok. And having the Foodi know what temps my food should be and when to flip until completed is great. I have always wanted a grill like this. I have been using an infrared grill and I was mostly satisfied with it but now I know what I was missing. I made the switch and I am glad I did. There are just so many options now with the Foodi for me to try and expect to get a great meal. Another great feature is there are tons of videos available that can help anyone to get the same great results I have gotten. I also feel better about using more electricity and less gas to cook each day. The grill looks perfect in my mostly stainless kitchen and so far it looks to be quite easy to keep clean. I also love how simple the controls are to use. Once you use them a few times they are very easy to understand. When you use the thermometer it shows you the cooking temperature in realtime, very nice. I have found the temperature reported seems about 5 degrees higher than the food measures with my handheld thermometer. But that's easy to compensate for as you use it more. I also like that you can just cook by time and temp and check your progress with the thermometer at any time. And for me the pre-set cooking settings are perfect. Cooking with the Foodi is just cool. The front grill buttons are almost flush so that helps in the cleaning. And most everything is dishwater safe. The Foodi does take up a bit more counter space than I expected. And I have to have it close to the edge of the counter for cooking so I get better circulation around or need the lid open. I was also surprised at how loud it seemed when I first used it. Now after a few times I hardly even notice. I am really looking forward to cooking a lot with the Foodi and having more fun with it.

Great All Purpose Kitchen Appliance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ninja Grill came very well packaged, and includes a grill, a basket, and a great recipe/instruction book. When you first turn it on, the fan noise is definitely noticeable, but not obnoxious. You can adjust the time and temperature during preheat if using manually, but can also use the "smart" technology and the presets to make things easier. It's fairly simple to use and will actually help you along the way. After preheating it will tell you to "add food". Once you add the food, it will automatically start once the cover is shut. The first thing I grilled were pork chops, but because they were slightly frozen, and less than 1", I didn't use the thermometer. I set the time for 15 minutes. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to flip the meat, but after about 8 minutes, a message came on to "flip". I then read through the recipe book and they have great charts including one that shows cooking time, temp, and when to flip. The recipes, including some for sauces are great. It did not smoke at all, but the heat did set off my smoke alarm (mine is sensitive and close to the unit). Cleanup of the grill and the drip plate were very easy. The second item I grilled were steaks and asparagus, following the instructions exactly from the book. It was wonderful to set the rareness, and let the grill do the rest for cooking time. The steak and asparagus were perfect. We've also used it for simple things like corn dogs, fries, etc. It can bake, air fry, roast, grill - an all purpose appliance for the kitchen! The only two negatives are: I wish the grill and the basket fit inside the unit for storage and no matter how careful I am to use silicone tongs and spatulas, there are some scratches on the basket and I'm hoping it won't be an issue in the future.

Love the automatic temperature monitoring
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.## Usage The instructions are a little overwhelming for this grill, but there are two main ways to use it: - Manual mode: This is the default when you turn the unit on and lets you set the temperature and time manually. 1. First, tap a function on the bottom (for example, “grill”) 2. Set the temperature on the left side of the display (lo, med, hi, max) 3. Set the time on the right. 4. Press start, wait for the preheat to finish, then put your meat inside. - Thermometer mode: This feature is very cool and automatically shuts off when the inside of the meat reaches a certain temperature. Unfortunately, you can not use this on frozen meats. 1. First, connect the thermometer wire to the right side of the grill. 2. Turn on the unit, then press the silver button with the picture of the thermometer. 3. Select the function at the bottom (for example, “grill”). 4. On the right side of the display, you select the meat (for example, “beef”) 5. On the left side you select the doneness (rare, med rare, med, med well, well). 6. Press start, wait for the preheat to finish, then put your meat inside and insert the thermometer into the middle of the thickest part of the meat. 7. The display will show “Get Food” when cooking is almost done. At this point, you remove the meat from the grill and place it on a plate where it will “carry-over cook” for 3-5 minutes . ## Performance I’ve made both hot dogs and burgers on this grill with “thermometer mode” and they come out tasting great, almost like I made them on an outside grill (although, they are lacking in that smoky flavor). Air frying works well, too, but if you have a lot of pieces in the basket, you need to make sure to shake them up or otherwise move them around every so often while cooking so the air can hit all sides of the food. Preheating takes about 10 minutes and can be skipped, but it is not recommended by Ninja. It’s kind of a pain that it takes so long to preheat, but I like how the burgers come out crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside when you allow it to preheat first. I haven’t really noticed any smoke when using the unit, so Ninja seems to have done a good job of mitigating that. ## Clean up Maintenance is fairly easy. There are 4 main parts to clean: 1. The grilling plate (or the air crisper basket if you use that instead) 2. The splatter guard (mounted in the lid) 3. The grease catcher 4. The thermometer itself All the pieces are non-stick and gunk comes off fairly easily. Hopefully, this lasts over time, but we know non-stick doesn’t last forever. A brush is included as well to help remove the stuck-on food pieces and grease and get between the many grooves of the grill plate. ## Design The unit is rather large and takes up a considerable amount of counterspace. The power cord sticks out directly from the back, making it hard to push up against the wall when not in use. If you have the counterspace for it, it’s a great addition to your kitchen. However, if this is something you plan to put away and get out each time you want to use it, you may quickly tire of that given its bulky size. There is a storage compartment in the side of the unit for the thermometer, but you need to disconnect it and wrap the wire around the storage compartment each time, which is a bit of a hassle as well. It would be easier if there was just a tube alongside the unit you could stick the thermometer in when not in use. ## Summary Overall, this Ninja Foodi Indoor Grill performs great and helps take the guesswork out of grilling meat as the included thermometer monitors the temperature and shuts the unit off when the meat gets hot enough. The unit is somewhat large and bulky, so be sure to take the size into account when planning where you’ll put it in your kitchen.

An awesome indoor smokeless grill
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I think of Ninja small appliances, I typically think of blenders. Ninja has come a long way with air fryers, pressure cookers, and now indoor grills. Out of the box you get the main unit, a cooking container, the grill, a meat thermometer, a grease catcher, and some inserts. (It comes with some of the most helpful inserts I have ever seen. One is a cooking guide that shows you what settings you should use for optimum results, and the other is a quick start guide) Everything except for the main unit and thermometer are dishwasher safe, but I still prefer to clean the grease catcher by hand using some warm water and dishwasher soap. I'm always intimidated the first time I try to use a small appliance because if something goes wrong, waste of time, and waste of food. This time however, I was very simple to set up and use. Ninja recommends cleaning all of the attachments (Minus the main unit) with some warm water and soap. The front main console is your one stop for getting everything done. You have the power and preheat buttons, your cooking setting, the up and down rockers for temperature and time, and the meat thermometer and start/stop. That's essentially all you need to cook some delicious food. For my first attempt, I decided to grill some Korean BBQ ribs. I insert both the cooking container (To catch any excess sauce and oil) and the grill which sits on top of the container. I turned it on, and let the preheating begin (It takes about 10 minutes to preheat. Ninja recommends it, so I didn't see a need to skip it... even though it has a button that skips it). I chose the high setting, and 10 minutes (The guide said 10 minutes for well done, so that's what I chose). The screen tells you when to add the food, and as soon as I set the first rib, I heard the beautiful sound of sizzling meat. That alone let me know that the meat would be cooked well, and that the marinade would caramelize. At the half way point, I prompted me to flip over the meat, and so I followed suit. When it was done, I opened the lid and noticed that the meat was a tad burnt, but that was my miscalculation because ;the ribs are a lot thinner than a typical steak would be. Luckily it was just the ends of each rib. The ribs had grill marks, and the marinade did indeed caramelize quite nicely, but the taste is what had me giving this little grill five stars. There wasn't a single billow of smoke at any point, and the house filled withs the lovely scent of grilling ribs. For clean up, I placed the container and grill in the dishwasher, and hand washed the grease catcher. (I haven't used the thermometer but the guide shows how to inject the protein and how to use it) There are more settings such as air crisp, roast, bake, broil, and dehydrate which I haven't tried but the air crisp and dehydrate are my next cooking adventures. All in all the Ninja Foodi Smart XL is a little unit that accomplishes a lot. The only gripe is that it's not the biggest grill, so I had to cook the ribs in batches. If this is the XL, then I wonder what the size of the L or M look like... I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes their proteins grilled, and the convenience of not having to hover at the grill to make sure it gets an even cook.

Wonderful Ninja Foodi Smart XL
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I once had an air fryer from another brand that ended up being recalled due to explosion risks. At the time, I didn’t bother sending it back and just threw it away, and since then I completely stopped using air fryers. But cooking fish or meat at home was always a hassle because of the smoke and smell, so I finally decided to look for a new option and ended up buying the Ninja Foodi Smart XL from Best Buy. The price is a bit higher than other air fryers, but the delivery was fast, the packaging was secure, and after using it I can honestly say it’s worth it. The built-in smart thermometer makes it so easy to cook meat exactly to the doneness I want. The outside comes out nice and crispy while the inside stays juicy. I also love that I can get that crispy texture without using much oil, which makes meals feel a lot healthier. Another big plus is that it produces far less smoke and smell than I expected. I can grill fish or meat indoors without making the whole house uncomfortable. The XL size is great too—big enough for family meals—and cleanup is simple since the removable parts are nonstick. Considering my past concerns about safety, I feel very reassured and happy with this purchase. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who often cooks fish or meat at home

This versatile appliance not only delivers on its promises but also exceeds expectations in terms of convenience and performance. Versatility: One of the best things about this grill is its multi-functionality. It’s not just a grill—it’s also an air fryer, bake, roast, broil, and dehydrate machine. I’ve used it to grill juicy steaks, air fry crispy fries, and even bake desserts, all with excellent results.
