I was hesitant to try the new Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill. I didn't really think that an electric grill could really give me the flavor I was looking for. Boy was I wrong.
So, full disclosure, I am not a Grill Master. I enjoy grilling, and I have both charcoal and propane setups, but I just do it for fun and don't really get super into it like some people do. I like to think I have pretty good burgers, and my wife is a chicken guru, but other than a few hotdogs, that's about all we really grill. I've wanted a pellet grill/smoker for years, but never pulled the trigger because I don't think I'd use it enough. When this little guy came along, it felt like an interesting option to try out that wouldn't take up a ton of space, and was (albeit on the large side) portable enough to take along when we pull the camper out for a long weekend.
It really couldn't have been easier to set up out of the box. All you have to do is slip the two side handles on and tighten 4 screws with the included tools. Take off all the plastic and tape and you're done. The cord is pretty short, so make sure you have a high quality outdoor appliance rated extension chord to go with it.
I decided that for the purposes of reviewing the unit, I’d follow the included instructions to the letter just to see if performs as advertised. I’ve never used an electric convection grill with a pellet smoker box…because this is probably the first one of it’s kind…so I didn’t really know how to get started. The instructions were super simple. It is incredibly easy to operate and there are plenty of starter recipice to get you going while you familiarize yourself with the grill.
My wife and I like smoked meats, but my kids aren’t huge fans. So, we decided to test this out with two different meals. First would be grilled chicken breasts. Second would be pulled pork.
I looked in the manual for cooking times on the chicken. It said like 8 minutes. I was scared that it would be done in 8 minutes, so I ran it for 10-12 minutes. I should have followed the instructions. It was a bit overcooked. My fault. That said, the grill marks were great and everyone loved it. I put some provolone cheese on top right at the end and we made chicken bacon ranch sandwiches. I also threw the buns and some fresh Jalapenos on the grill while the chicken was resting. It was super easy and really tasty.
Next I decided to try pulled pork. I have NEVER made pulled pork. There is a recipe in the manual. I went to my butcher and had them debone an 8lb shoulder and cut it in half so that I would have the 3-4lb boneless cut that the recipe called for. I just grabbed a simple pork rub off the shelf at the butcher shop. I did exactly what the book said. I generously rubbed it down, dropped it on the grill, filled up the woodfire pellet hopper, set it to smoker at 250 degrees for 4 hours and pushed the button. The grill ignited the pellets perfectly and it went about it’s business of smoking the pork. I didn’t do anything else. No brine, no basting, no liquid in the smoker…just the meat on the grill. I never even opened the lid to check on it. I was nervous because I didn’t have a temperature probe. I was relying entirely on the grill and recipe. When it finished, I opened the lid to find an perfectly dark bark and an absolutely amazing smell. I wrapped it in plastic wrap and let it rest for an hour before I pulled the first piece and tried it. AMAZING. It was absolutely wonderful. Delicious flavor, excellent bark, easy to pull, tender, moist, just great. I decided after the fact that I think the base recipe, while fantastic, cooks that small of a shoulder a little hot. I’ll be using a wireless probe next time and I’ll cook it to more like 190 rather than the low 200’s as the recipe said it would do. I think this will retain a little bit more moisture. That said, you can follow the book and it will perform very well.
So ya, I love this thing. Clean up is not hard at all. I line the drip pan with foil so that’s just a throw away cleanup. The grill is non-stick and very easy to clean with soap and water in the kitchen sink. Yes, you do have to clean it, but it’s not much more work than cleaning any skillet you fried food in and the food is way better! It isn’t huge, but it’s plenty big enough to my family of 4. You aren’t likely to host a party with it, but for families or less, it’s perfect. It’s pretty heavy, but that’s to be expected. I haven’t tried air frying yet, but I’m excited to give that a whirl soon. It comes with a crisper basket and I’m looking forward to making wings and smoked vegetables.
I’m really enjoying this grill, and my wife loves that she is doing less cooking in the house while I’m outside playing with my new toy. It hasn’t made a bad meal yet, and I’m just following the book. I’m looking forward to going off script and experimenting with it soon. I definitely recommend this unit if you have a small space or are wanting to dabble in electric grilling/smoking. It makes really tasty meals with very little fuss.

The Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill (Model OG701) is terrific.
We love barbecue and grilling with both a barbecue pit with an offset firebox, as well as a kettle grill. My choice for fuel has been charcoal with wood logs, chunks or chips for smoke and flavor.
In the 1970’s, while living in an apartment with a balcony, we missed barbecue due to the fire marshal prohibiting open flames on balconies. I discovered an electric grill that was built like a small gas grill, complete with lava rocks. Instead of a gas burner, it had a thermostatically controlled electric Calrod heating element. It remained in use until the Calrod element rusted due to high humidity and it was no longer functional.
I was quite pleased to see the Ninja Woodfire Grill. There are a couple of model variants. The Ninja Woodfire PRO version adds a built-in thermometer with plug-in temperature probe.
The Woodfire Grill requires very minimal assembly. The two plastic side handles merely need to be attached using the included hex key.
The Ninja Woodfire Grill includes a grill grate, crisper basket, smoke box, grease tray and plastic pellet scoop.
The Ninja Woodfire has seven cooking modes, selectable with the rotary dial on the control panel. They are “Grill”, “Smoker”, “Air Crisp”, “Bake”, “Roast”, “Broil” and “Dehydrate”. The control panel also has Temperature and Time Control membrane switch buttons. Temperature and Time flexibility is essential since the preset settings might not suit your needs. There is also a “Woodfire Flavor Technology” button, which ignites the wood pellets when smoke is desired, and a “Start/Stop” button. Smoke only starts automatically in “Smoker” mode. For other cooking modes, smoke is added by depressing the “Woodfire Flavor Technology” button.
The Woodfire Grill does not have a wire grill or grate like conventional grills, pits or smokers. Instead, it has a cast aluminum ridged grill plate, with an opening near the rear for grease to flow to the grease pan below. The grill grate and steel crisper basket have a non-stick, high-heat ceramic coating which Ninja claims is PTFE/PFOA free.
The non-stick coating requires hand-washing only, but cleans easily with minimal effort, even when food is “burnt on”. The non-stick coating is not safe for use with metal utensils, so silicone tipped tongs are a necessity. When in use, the crisper basket is placed on the grill plate with the “feet” of the basket resting in recesses in the grill plate. Those metal to metal contact areas are at particular risk of damage to the non-stick coating.
In grilling mode, the grill plate gets scorching hot (about 500° F) and the ridges impart nice grill marks on the meat. Since food is cooked on a solid griddle, and is essentially “frying” on the bottom, when the hood is opened the sizzling cooking grease splatters on the exterior areas, the plastic control panel, and surrounding surfaces.
All other metal components of the Woodfire Grill are constructed of steel, including the grill hood, the crisper basket, and the grease tray. The motor housing for the circulation fan, on top of the hood, is made of brushed stainless steel. My grill arrived with a ½” patch of surface rust on the stainless-steel cover. Quality Control / Final Inspection at the factory might need some improvement! There is a gasket on the hood which seals to the base to contain the smoke and heat to the cooking area. Air drafts into the unit through the smokebox and exits through a vent in the upper left rear of the grill hood.
The cooking components perform very well. Beneath the grill plate is a looping Calrod heating element. Inside the top of the hood is another, circular heating element above the circulation fan. A third heating element is mounted on the right side of the hood adjacent to the smokebox, to ignite the wood pellets for smoke production.
The electronically controlled heating components provide an excellent and efficient cooking process. The circulation fan replicates a convection oven as well as drawing the wood smoke across the food.
The standard, ½ cup scoop of pellets weighs about 50 grams and burns for approximately 30 – 60 minutes. The pellets produce copious amounts of smoke, and the Woodfire Grill genuinely imparts great smoke flavor comparable to any conventional smoking/grilling method.
The attached, 16/3, GFCI, power cord is 48” in length. An extension cord will frequently be necessary. The Ninja website states that a 16 AWG extension cord should be used. The printed “Owner’s Guide” states that a 12 AWG extension cord should be used. The Woodfire Grill is rated to draw 1760 watts, which is 14.67 amps. I believe that the Owner’s Guide is providing the more accurate and safe recommendation.
The Grill’s dimensions are 23.62" L x 18.60" H x 13.31" W, and the weight is 30.6 lbs.
Ninja includes two sample bags of Ninja’s proprietary pellets, which are manufactured by Bear Mountain. Ninja emphasizes that only Ninja Woodfire Pellets are compatible with the Woodfire Grill. Since smoker pellets are all manufactured by extruding compressed and heated sawdust through a rotary die, it begs the question of why only the proprietary pellets can be used. Neither Ninja nor Bear Mountain would address the question. The Ninja All-Purpose Blend has Cherry, Maple and Oak, and the Robust Blend adds Hickory to Cherry, Maple and Oak. Bear Mountain’s Sweet Pellets and Gourmet Pellets have the same wood species. Ninja pellets are $8.00/lb. and are only sold online. Bear Mountain pellets are $0.65/lb. and locally available. Perhaps somebody will determine if there really is any performance difference between the pellets. Both the All-Purpose Blend and the Robust Blend imparted great tasting wood smoke flavoring.
The Owner’s Guide provides clear operating instructions for all of the cooking modes and for all of the features and functions of the Woodfire Grill. If smoke is being used, the sequence is for the Woodfire Grill to ignite the pellets prior to starting the preheat cycle of the grill. The pellet Ignition Cycle takes about 5 – 7 minutes. Therefore, in Grilling Mode, pellets are being consumed for about 20 – 22 minutes before the grill is ready for food to be added, which is wasteful.
The Preheat times vary by function and temperature, as follows:
Grill: approximately 12 – 20 minutes.
Air Crisp, Bake, Roast: 3 minutes.
Smoker, Dehydrate, Broil: No preheat.
The Temperature ranges are:
Grill: Low (400°F), Med (450°F), High (500°F).
Smoker: 145–400°F.
Air Crisp: 300–450°F.
Bake: 250–400°F.
Roast: 250–425°F.
Dehydrate: 80–195°F.
Broil: 500°F.
During the pellet Ignition and the Preheat cycles, the Control Panel displays LED segments which increment with progress. There are four groups of two segments each. After the eighth and final segment illuminates, the display prompts to “Add Food”. In some modes, there are also messages to “Flip Food” and other information.
I have used the Woodfire Grill twice, so far. The first was Grilling Mode with a frozen sirloin steak, and baked potatoes. The results were outstanding! Grill marks, lots of smoke flavor from the All-Purpose Blend pellets, a simple cooking process and easy cleanup.
The second dinner was grilling fresh bone-in pork chops. The five chops just barely fit onto the grill plate (wish it was larger). The results with the Robust Blend pellets were equally terrific!
I am looking forward to cooking a pork loin roast (smoke roasting) and pork butt (low & slow smoking) very soon. Smoked beef roast and brisket are also on the agenda.
I am however concerned with the challenge of properly storing the Woodfire Grill.
I am sure that most people consider the Woodfire Grill to be an outdoor product which is both used and stored outside. Ninja sells a “Ninja Woodfire Premium Grill Cover” which is “made from water-resistant fabric” and which “keeps the elements out”. A reasonable person would infer that the Ninja Woodfire can be stored outdoors. However, Item #46 in the printed Owner’s Guide, as well as the label which is permanently affixed to the back of the grill hood state, “Store indoors when not in use”.
My old electric grill failed even though it was stored in a covered and screened patio area, covered with a grill cover, and never exposed to rain. The Calrod heating element rusted, and it and the attached thermostatic control would not function. The high humidity, sometimes above 90% RH, irreparably damaged the heating element and controller.
The Woodfire heating elements cannot be removed and stored indoors to protect them from high humidity. The electronic controls and displays may potentially be vulnerable to damage from high humidity.
Will users comply with the instruction to store the Woodfire Grill indoors? Removing smoke odors from the grill is not feasible. Any indoor storage location would undoubtedly soon smell like a wood fire. The indoor storage issue presents something of a conundrum.
Notwithstanding the indoor storage issue and proprietary wood pellets, I think that the Ninja Woodfire Grill is great!
The Woodfire Grill is very simple and convenient to use. Preparation time is relatively short.
The features and functionality are comprehensive and complete. The seven cooking modes and customizable temperature and time settings make this grill extremely flexible and easy to use for any type of outdoor cooking, with or without smoke (although, why would anyone choose not to use smoke, unless baking bread or cakes)?
My wife and I are extremely impressed with the grilling results so far.

Great grill for not-so-great cooks

Let me start this review by saying I’m a lousy cook. My wife, on the other hand, is a GREAT cook which is why I kind of never went down that road. It would take years for me to learn and do what she can do, so I always figured why bother? But then I figured maybe she could use a break now and then, and when I saw the Ninja Woodfire it seemed like this could help.
A couple of first impressions, when I received the Ninja I was surprised by its size. Its actually rather compact. Maybe I was used to seeing our barbeque grill and expected it to be larger. But it has plenty of capacity for cooking a meal for my wife and I and our kids, just not as much grill space as a big barbeque grill. I think its size would be great for use in, say, an RV or for tailgating. Its also solid as a rock and rather heavy at 30 pounds. Setup was easy, just have to attach the handles, insert the drip tray and the grill grate and you’re ready to start cooking.
Included in the box are, among other things, two packages of wood pellets for smoking and a Quick Start Guide and recipe book. The guide book is super helpful. It has charts in the back for just about anything you will cook and gives you the settings such as temperature, cooking time, etc., for any type of meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, you name it. I’ve had the grill for a week now and have used it three times and this booklet has been extremely helpful to a rookie cook like myself.
For my first meal I kept it simple with just a couple of pre-made patties from the grocery store and added salt and pepper, that’s it. I followed the settings per the Quick Start Guide and once the preheat cycle was complete I started cooking. Halfway through the cooking cycle the Ninja will beep at you and display the message letting you know its time to flip the burgers. So how did they turn out? No joke, those burgers were great! They had a really nice char on the outside, medium/medium rare on inside, and were absolutely delicious.
Next up I followed the recipe in the included recipe book for pork shoulder. Again, simple has heck, just followed the settings per the recipe and let them slow cook for 4 hours. The smoke produced by the Ninja is substantial, but I did have to add pellets twice during the 4 hours because the tray that holds the pellets is not that large. But the pork shoulder turned out terrific, see the attached picture. Again, beautiful char on the outside and delicious!
A couple of final thoughts, clean-up of the non-stick grill plate is a breeze, same with cleaning the grease trap/tray, it wipes right off. I’ve already bought the Ninja cover for it, it was only $20. It fits perfectly and keeps it clean outdoors. Ninja also sells a stand for this grill but at $179 at the time of this review I’m gonna have to pass on that and will just keep using my countertop.
I also love that its electric. No propane to deal with, having to refill the tanks, tanks running out while you’re cooking, that kind of thing. As I said, its still my first week with the Ninja so I haven’t had a chance to use the air fryer, dehydration to make jerky, or use some of the other functions so I look forward to that. But for someone who doesn’t know how to cook like me, the Ninja Woodfire is awesome and the food I’ve made so far gives the impression that I know what I’m doing. I love this product and can’t wait to use it again!

i previously owned a big size outdoor grill which gave up recently so i was searching for a nice outdoor grill which can do everything, then i came across this Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill which literally blows my mind because of its form factor and the work it does this outdoor grill doesn't compromise at any level compared to a bigsize outdoor grill it can Grill, Airfry, Bake, Roast, Broil , Smoker and Dehydrate
This Grill just requires a Cup of Wood Pellets to give a great smoke Flavor to anything meat, veggies etc
The amount of food it can accommodate is also very surprisingly good, the Aircrisp function does the job of cooking food with literally no oil
The grill comes with two sample size bags of wood pellets to start your smoker and includes Airfryer Basket too it comes with a great recipe book
This grill is made up of pure metal to withstand all weather conditions and quite heavy too
The Ninja woodfire grill requires outdoor electricity because of its portability you can carry anywhere and store easily without occupying much of space
This Grill is a beast dont underestimate by its size it does lot of things then a normal big size grills

As someone who got into grilling in my late 30's, I love the smell and taste of wood. I usually grill with a small layer of charcoal covered with wood. I have a traditional smoker and do get tired of the amount of work it takes to maintain temps, load wood, and making sure placement of food is right to cook properly. This Ninja 7 in 1 grill is such an easier option, and so far I am simply blown away with the taste of the food. I have cooked steak, chicken, and shrimp on this grill. It is small and compact, however it is so much more efficient, that I spend roughly the same amount of time to cook as I would on my large smoker. It has simple instructions and does the job well. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has the slightest inclination to buy it and give it a chance. They will like the finished foods. They have flavor comparable to any smoked foods.

As any other Ninja Product this one is no exception and i mean that this Ninja Woodfire 7in1 outdoor grill, master grill, bbq smoker & outdoor air fryer with woodfire technology works great and it's build right!
I was rather skeptical about the woodfire technology but it turned out to be pretty simple concept that they used and seems to work really well. The grill is fully electric and as the user manual says i would recommend to be used only outside. Looks like it's got 3 heating elements:
- one underneath for the grilling plate
- second on the top of the grill to facilitate the air frying
- third one would be the side one that would fire the pallets
Very easy to setup! Only thing you have to do is to instal the handles, plug it in and start cooking.
The plate is recommended to be washed only by hand and no metal utensils should be used while cooking. Even if is too burn something on it that non stick coating makes it so easy to clean it's like magic.
The box comes with a seal all around it to contain better the smoke flavor from the pallets which by the way when full will burn for approximatively 60mins
Like i said in the description this is a very good option for someone that is looking for a nice grill and lives in an apartment for example or someone that does light grilling. It's good, fast to setup and clean and doesn't require much cooking skill!

This is actually my second Ninja Woodfire, I have one on my ground floor patio, and the second one on my rooftop patio.
I love it for my rooftop patio. It’s small, perfect to grill a 3-4 person entree steak/ribs, but at the same time easy to transport back to the kitchen for cleaning. The heat and smoke well controlled, evenly spread on the grill as seen in the pictures. And as most people already know the Ninja level of quality, the heat hits high and perfectly smokes everything you throw on it. See pictures, the package comes with the pellets to start you off, I highly recommend doing your best beef rib recipe then throwing in the all purpose blend to accent your already awesome recipe. The bold was really good, but I felt it went better with pork ribs. If you’re grilling and not smoking, it can get a little messy, small splatters on the side (no guard), the grease drips in the back can get a little messy also. Finally my best recommendation is to get the foldable grill stand, and it will instantly transform this gem in to a functional efficient compact grilling smoking machine , away from the table causing the mess, nestled in a small compact intimate place like a balcony patio, and you have an instant winner. Must have for every grill dad

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been going over to someone’s house and wished I had an extra oven (Thanksgiving for a pie) or grill either because the main one was being used or they didn’t have one. This little thing has been perfect for that AND just general use so I don’t have to fire up the larger gravity fed just to make some hot dogs. It never felt right to have a whole extra grill for extra tasks but this definitely feels like it deserves a place next to your smoker or charcoal grill. The ease of use and cleanup is perfect and really the only kicker is the need for a longer cord. You can use an outdoor rated extension cord but I wish I didn’t have to carry one around just in case I’ll be too far from the outlet.
Overall the cooking process was familiar from using a regular grill and the grilling area was plenty of space for the four people eating. Cleanup was nice because everything comes apart but some parts are not dishwasher safe so keep that in mind. I’d definitely line the drip pan just to keep it cleaner if you are going to be transporting it regularly. Grill marks came across on hamburgers and chicken just like my standard grill. The one other item of note is that the system does note to only use Ninja sold wood pellets for the smoker function. Haven’t had to price these out yet but as long as they’re at least in the same ballpark I don’t mind using theirs.

In my mind, smokers are oversized and intimidating. I was sold on this appliance because it allowed me to smoke meats easily and on my small back porch. I put the Woodfire grill on a table and placed it in the corner of the porch where there is a GFCI grounded electrical outlet. With just a little bit of reading ahead of time, I made two recipes: Smoked Pit Beef Sandwiches With Horseradish Sauce and Cheesy Stuffed Chicken Breasts. The versatility means I can use multiple functions: grill, smoker, air crisp, bake, roast, broil, dehydrate.
Who are the people who should run out and buy the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill? Those who:
• don’t have an outdoor grill
• have an outdoor grill, but want to do more with it
• want to take their grilling to a new level with a smoker
• love to grill and want to add another grilling surface
• like to cook fish, but don’t want to stink up the house
• like to grill fruit/vegetables and don’t want to lose a single piece
• have run out of propane in the middle of cooking
• own other Ninja appliances and are obsessed with accumulating all their products
I can check off all the above statements except the first.
The set up out of the box was minimal – simply attach the handles before you remove the tape from unit. Whether you have other Ninja products, be sure to read the safety instructions before you cook. It is important to know the following safety information:
• This appliance is ONLY for outdoor use.
• You can use an extension cord, but it must be specifically for outdoors and have special markings.
• Clean the grill grate and crisper basket by hand. These are not dishwasher safe.
• Clean the grill after each use.
• Only use genuine food grade wood pellets from Ninja in the unit.
Other helpful things to know:
• The smoker function smokes the meat while the woodfire flavor gives it a grill flavor.
• The cook time for most of the smoked meats will be several hours at a low temperature.
• You can grill frozen food.
• The grill is for closed-hood cooking.
• Use tin foil to keep the grill grate clean with baking or air frying.
• Unless you buy a special package, the unit does not come with a grill cover or stand.
• Preheating time for the grill will take longer than you think, so plan accordingly (7-12 min). If adding Woodfire Flavor, ignition time will add an additional 5-7 minutes. However, no preheat for Smoker, Dehydrate, Broil.
• You can skip the preheat cycle though it is not recommended.
As with all Ninja kitchen appliances, there are Facebook community groups you can join to ask questions, share tips, and trade recipes.
