Good Idea but Bad Menu Interface

First the good points. The unit is solid and attractive and functions as designed. It has a good basic theory in that waking up to softly glowing light and for example nature sounds will get you off to a better start for your day. After testing I would agree there is indeed some benefit.
Now the bad. The interface is a nightmare (pun intended) relative to usability. There are icons that over time you may ‘get’ but they are not intuitive. Also the menus are layered and it is difficult to recall where various settings are. The designers wanted to have too many options and settings; ... in my estimation, they goofed.
You can use it as an alarm clock radio with FM tuner. Also you can use it for deep breathing exercises, and you can use it with all the bells and whistles to bring up just the right volume and color intensity to wake you up. It also has a snooze function.
The proper design would have been a few knobs to set each function instead of diving into layered menus. Yes, it can be learned and you can wrestle through the odd-looking icons to set radio stations and set the other parameters but it is by no means something that is well designed or you will remember next time you may want to change settings.
I would advise a more simple interface with the knobs I mentioned and fewer options. Also a big button on the device to select say one of just three wake up modes. I don’t recommend this device it has hard to see icons, too many settings and an interface that is not intuitive in my opinion. I have an MS in Computer Science so I know this device’s interface could have been done a lot better, and still been profitable at this price point.

Great Way to Wake Up

I am very impressed with this lamp. When I first opened it, I thought it may be too big and too bright. After a few days of use, it is the perfect size. It is the best wake up alarm ever. The light simulating a sunrise and the nature songs works perfect. You can also do breathing exercises. My only problem was the touch menu. It could be just a bit easier to follow and not have so many steps. That is a small issue and would not cause me to hesitate from recommending this unit. It also has radio interface and the speaker is surprisingly crisp and clear. If you are into relaxation or meditation, this is a must have.

I love this lamp's elegant look, it doesn't look out of place on your nightstand as just another "smart" device. I also love the "light" that it emits - it is always just the right texture no matter how bright you set it up as, it is nver harsh to the eyes. I love its sleep mode as well, it simulates the sunset really well, and adding to it the sound of crashing waves puts you in the right mood to relax.
So, if I love so much about this lamp why have I deducted a star from the review. As a "smart" device it does fall a bit short. I wish the speaker was better quality, and I wish I could connect it to my phone. These might feel like 1st world problems, because they are. But hey that's what we expect now.
If it weren't for these short comings this is a 5 star device for me. I appreciate the research and trial and error that would have gone to get some of these modes just right for their intended purposes. Personally I did not find much use for the breathing mode. But both the sunset mode and the wake up cycle are great.
Your smartphone can maybe perform the audio piece of this, but this is a complete - audio visual package, and as I already mentioned a great looking lamp on its own.

Great to wake up to. I have mine and the great thing about it is that it makes me ask myself if I should call her.

I love Philips products and was excited to add a smart alarm clock to my routine. I was disappointed. It’s way overpriced for how limited the features are: can’t play the sound machine all night, can only set two separate alarms, very few sound options, speaker is quite bad, controls require interpretation. I wanted to give the smarter app controlled version a go, but they’re sold out everywhere and reviews aren’t that great anyway.
I may return this and hope for a new and improved version at some point.

Was a gift for my son, sent directly to him, delivered earlier than expected by Fedex. He was initially underwhelmed, but since using it as an alarm says it delivers the promised quiet wake up. I am giving 5 stars based on his feedback, I haven't seen the appliance. (Florida/N Dakota!).
