My Pokémon Z-A Review (So Far)

Pre-Order Bonus Problem:
I pre-ordered this game at Best Buy, three separate orders, and unfortunately not one of them came with the play mat. Every other retailer had preorder bonuses, and I chose Best Buy because theirs looked like the best one. It even said the mat was included when I checked out, but I never got it. It’s not really the store’s fault, but it was still disappointing because I could have ordered elsewhere and received the bonuses.
How I Paid:
I used Best Buy credit card points for one of the copies, so I didn’t pay full price for all three. Still, it’s pretty expensive for what the game offers. As a Plus Member, I did get an extra $10 for preordering, which was a nice bonus.
Gameplay and Mechanics:
Honestly, the game isn’t bad compared to Scarlet and Violet. It runs smoothly, and the graphics are solid, not as good as Sword and Shield but definitely better than Legends Arceus. The game focuses heavily on PvP and has a fast-paced combat style. It feels like they mixed Legends Arceus’ battle mechanics with some sort of PvP mode.
That said, it really lacks story content and feels limited. The map design is strange with Pokémon randomly spawning in the city near parked cars, and it doesn’t make much sense. It’s supposed to look like Pokémon “took over,” but it just feels odd. Sword and Shield had distinct biomes, gyms, and a clear sense of purpose. Even Scarlet and Violet, despite the bugs, offered exploration and variety. Legends Arceus had different regions too. But Z-A basically just gives you Lumiose City, a few rooftops, and nighttime battles with random trainers. The main goal is climbing from Rank Z to A with some side missions along the way.
Features:
There are some cool touches like shinies sparkling and making a sound when they appear, and you can leap across rooftops and dash. Megas are also back, which is awesome. But overall, it’s still the same standard Pokémon formula.
The Map:
Lumiose City itself looks great, but it feels kind of lifeless. I’ve only played about two hours so far. Honestly, five minutes in, I took a nap. Maybe I was just tired from doing assignments, or maybe the game’s calm pacing and mellow vibe put me to sleep. The background music is soothing, with a soft jazz feel, which I actually like a lot.
Overall:
The game just doesn’t feel worth $60. There’s not much included, just the game and a small Gardevoir bonus. It would have been nice to get something extra, like a card or poster. That’s one of my biggest complaints with most Switch games, the boxes feel empty.
I’m still debating whether to buy the DLC. If it doesn’t take me outside Lumiose City, I’ll probably be disappointed.
Verdict:
Calm soundtrack, nice graphics, fun mechanics, but lacking story, content, and value.
Enjoy!

Honestly I have every pokemon game there is and I would argue this is not too far off graphic wise. A little disappointed. The game itself is fun but it’s been like two hours and I’m still in the tutorial man
