The graphics won't impress on a technical level, but the art style of the Paris-like "Lumiose City," which houses most of the game's setting, still does a good job of picking up the French atmosphere that this game's predecessors, Pokémon X and Y, did a beautiful job of showcasing a decade ago.
I thought Violet had a more emotional story, but I found these characters generally likeable, with a main plot that could have been slightly shorter but didn't really wear out its welcome as much as I expected from the central tournament, even if I thought the story didn't really get interesting until it neared its ending. The real-time combat is the star of the show, with its emphases on reflexes and positioning, even if the game believes this a little too much, with some optional side quests having extremely high quotas for number-of-battle completions.
I'm glad to be able to talk to random NPCs again, unlike in Violet where this wasn't often the case, but it would have been nice for most building interiors to be explorable - here, offices and residential areas just feel like decorations. Even most stores simply open up a menu instead of showing you their insides, with a small selection of restaurants being one of the game's few exceptions. The "fashion shop" music returns from X and Y, but while there are plenty of clothing options, those stores don't have interiors either.
The online multiplayer, the highlight of the game, mostly focuses on its ranked mode, a four-player arena where each competitor brings three Pokémon. Matches are timed, not dependent on which person has all of their Pokémon faint first. Instead of this being a simple and potentially unbalanced 1-on-1 format, the emphasis on scoring instead of on elimination helps the ranked multiplayer feel more fun and less "sweaty" / obsessively detail-focused than I would have expected. The underlying party planning still feels almost as deep as the main games, minus the lack of passive abilities. Crucially the frame rate in this mode has generally been quite good, which is more than I'll say for some parts of the single-player post-game content where I'm taking on several minor side tasks at once.
If you're willing to accept a number of technical compromises, I do love the game itself.

Real time combat makes it a little different than legends arceus was. As is the loss of pokeball sniping from a large distance. I especially miss the fly jet feather balls from arceus.
Royale structure could have been interesting if they had kept with it but they quickly abandoned the naming theme for each letter rank match, skipped multiple letters and only have a handful of npcs in the royale that are equivalent to gym leaders, rivals and to a lesser degree elite 4 and champion.
Many of the wild zones where you catch pokemon don't list all the pokemon found there and some honestly I never had spawn period despite them being listed. Some pokemon aren't really found in them either only on rooftops or via side quests or the sewers/underground area. Speaking of its a shame the catacombs and sewers barely get used at all as well as abandoned/empty buildings. Had they done that the city would have felt far more large and varied than it was.
Traversal takes a big hit compared to all the other games. Sure you can quick travel to various locations once registered but otherwise its incredibly slow going with only a run option. No rollerskates, mounts, bikes hurt things. Oh and you never get surf which is extremely weird as every other pokemon game allows for traveling on water but this one. But without a proper flying pokemon option traveling between rooftops even with rotoms glide clunky feature leaves much to be desired.
Boss battles are far easier than arceus. Especially after you get all the charms so the player doesn't instantly faint and black out as much. Besides when targeted from alphas I only had 1 fainting spell from a hawlucha ambush after coming down a ladder. That thing never respawned either come to think of it. As I wanted revenge.

My son and I enjoy the game. I love exploring the city, and parkouring. I love the open pokemon battle style, it’s fun. The con is that, “sneaking” up on trainers is really easy even with an alpha pokemon in plain site about to attack the opponent. Haha. My son absolutely enjoys it, and enjoys some of the new mega. The storyline is great, can’t wait for the expansion

I see reviews being mixed on this game and let me explain why.
Alot of those who play grew up with the originals are use to that older type of gameplay.
This game is much more different but in a good way, change can sometimes be good.
The mechanics are easy to learn, graphics look great, the story is fun.
I am having a blast with this game, so much to do and learn with all your favorite pokemons.

Ive finished the main story of the game and played about 40 hours. I’ve enjoyed most of it including the new battle system, character customization and return of mega evolutions. The story is very repetitive for a while and the tutorial is painfully long. However, once you get into the main story it becomes more of an enjoyable experience. Don’t forget to do the side quests! There are a lot of fun ones.

As a Pokemon fan of many years, I was skeptical about this style of game. I did not play the previous Legends game, but the vast character customization options (and therefore the ability to design your character like a gym leader) was honestly the reason I decided to give this game a chance. I was pleasantly surprised! The mechanics are fun. Different, but fun. I’d say it’s one of the easier games in the series, but there is so much to do in the game that I didn’t run out of objectives or tire of catching Pokemon. The “calming rogue mega evolution pokemon” plot was a little reminiscent of the old Pokemon Colosseum game.
Pros: Multiple side quests, fun story, mega-evolutions, extensive character customization, shiny pokemon are easier to find and more common, alpha pokemon are challenging and fun to collect
Cons: Graphics are underwhelming, the “wild zones” aren’t big enough, the map as a whole could have been a lot bigger than one singular city, some mega evolutions locked behind DLC.

I'll start by acknowledging this game may not be technically perfect
But you can get a cup of coffee with Aron and I think that makes it basically perfect.
The battle system is fun and engaging, there's a solid level of challenge compared to other games. There's an incredible degree of love and detail in the pokemon animations, movements, expressions. The fashion customization is a delight the cast of characters and dialogue is genuinely hilarious and really well done.
Anyone who loves pokemon would enjoy this game overall, and I've already sunk 100 hours into it. It's fun, plain and simple.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is one of the boldest entries in the series. The real-time battle system is a huge step forward and makes fights feel more alive than ever. The story and music are great!!

I am dissapointed by the graphics, but it does run well on my first revision Switch 1. It's fun and different enough to keep me interested. Was my dream as a kid to have a "real-time" Pokemon game so it would be more like the anime :)

The real-time combat system is a bold step for the series: battles feel more dynamic, with the player and Pokémon acting simultaneously rather than a purely turn-based menu system.
• The game takes place in the familiar region of Kalos (specifically in Lumiose City), which brings a nostalgic value for long-time fans while introducing fresh mechanics.
• Sales are strong: the game sold approximately 5.8 million copies in its first week, showing there is still strong demand for Pokémon titles.
• There is a clear intent to build on the spin-off “Legends” sub-series (after Pokémon Legends: Arceus) and experiment with the formula.

Brilliant take on the Pokémon game series. Real-time battles, and MEGA Pokémon make it better than a lot of recent entries to the series. I do recommend.
