    Quirky Japanese Action-RPG

Things to know before you buy: 1-You may not be able to find this game at Best Buy. 2-All dialog and narration is in Japanese w/ English sub-titles. 3-You can't save anytime you want; you save & load at one, central in-game location. If that's all fine with you... This is a fun game for me so far (I haven't completed it yet). It's totally Japanese, not just in language, but in sensibility and style. If you've played other Japanese games or are familiar with how they do other pop art-forms like film, anime, and manga, you'll know what this means for art, dialog, and narrative. The game-play is hack-n-slash, with the addition of Pokemon-like assistants possessing various abilities. These add a strategic twist to battles beyond simply beating on your enemies. There are no difficulty settings. The story is basic and the characters are cliche, and that's fine; the game is about quests and combat and loot and improving your character -- i.e. it's an old school action-rpg with no pretensions. Not deep, a bit repetitive, meant to be simple fun. It's stylish and cute and you could say a little sexy (for anime characters). The controls are well-designed and responsive. The ambiance (music, environments, etc.) are very well-done. If you're okay with sub-titles (or you understand Japanese) and don't insist on hardcore gaming 100% of the time, I'd recommend Nights of Azure to you.
