Returnal is an awesome game for people who enjoys roguelike genre and very hard challenges, because defiantly it won't hold your hand. I wanted to deduct a some points for the items and weapons luck randomness system, also no check points in case you had to leave or stop in the middle of a long run like going to sleep, but no you lose everything and you have to start over. Hence, looking at everything after beating the game twice it was overwhelming positive, I saw all the endings and I don't think I will every forget the story, music, environments, art and the fast base combat.

Love, love, love this game. The mechanics of gameplay are great and the environment is stunning. Gameplay is slightly repetitive because you restart every time you die, but the environment (to a degree), changes each time you reset. The fact that you reset is the frustrating part. Grinding for over an hour to gear up just to die a few minutes into the next zone sucks. As you get through zones and fight the bosses, the game gets harder as would be expected. Some of the intermediate fights leading to boss are difficult, and you will die....A LOT. The fact that you die and reset is a mechanic built in the game so it is unavoidable, but that is part of the story progression. The story is incredible and leaves room for various interpretations. I truly enjoyed this game and sometime in the future I will likely start fresh and play through again. The co-op mode isn't a typical two player experience. You can join a friends "instance" of the game, but all progression and unlocks are only given to the first player (not the player who joined). For example, you start a game and your friend joins you. You fight and kill Phrike (the first boss). Only you get credit for the fight, your friend doesn't. So when your friend goes back to their own game, they will be back at the point they left off - without the boss win. I enjoyed playing with a buddy and really didn't mind playing through some of the boss fights twice so we both could progress. The boss fights are tough, but sometimes getting to the boss is the biggest challenge in the game.

Far from perfect, but so beautiful in it’s successes that it comes closer to perfection than it should. At this point, it’s not much of a secret that Returnal can be somewhat of a difficult game - and in that, I believe it’s not as hard as some others have had with it, but the game is challenging in its fireworks and fodder arcade-style combat - mostly due to the long, save-less, runs that requires a level of flawlessness that takes some time to perfect. At least for most, including myself. As said before, the save points are few and far between, and what lies between will cause you to live, die, repeat while losing weapons and items, only to put you back to the beginning for an attempt at a deathless run. Each cycle bringing a new layout of the land, or biome. It’s at the end of these biomes where the save points exist, but only after defeating a boss that will challenge every tool and twitch one has learned in the hours leading up to these encounters. While all of this may sound stressful, or even time-wasting, it falls far from misery, throwing some of the best feeling shooter mechanics I’ve felt in a long time, very similar to the fluid chaos of Control. Jumping and dodging are rarely unfair, if ever, always zipping you around like a well-controlled human pinball. Some tools, like the melee sword, stick with the player though runs, and provide even more power to conquer the strange life-forms of the wonderful worlds in Returnal. This is Control by way of a souls-like, but never lacking the arcade elements the production team made their name in perfecting. Strap in and get ready to dance!

This game really shows off some of the graphical enhancements the PS5 is capable of and uses the Dualsense controller very well to immerse you in the gameplay. You’ll need to be patient (you are going to die…a lot). But each death leads to incremental progress and mastery. Wonderful sounds effects also and an eerie atmosphere. This is one of the first great first party games for the PS5!

This is a great Third Person Rogue-like Shooter with a fairly enjoyable loop. You play, you die, you level up, you go again. It can get repetitive but at least this one is done to a far higher standard than the usual Rogue-Lite/Rogue-Like. Still, do your research and know what you're getting into. Amazing setting, story, controls, graphics, but still a Rogue-like at heart.

This is my favorite PS5 Exclusive game, they did a great job with the 3rd person shooter and horror type story, graphics is insane and run like butter on 60fps. The game showcase the amazing haptic feedback and adaptive trigger. It’s very difficult though but challenging and rewarding. A must have

Intense battle system, mysterious story, alien vibe, many types of enemies you can find and ways to explore the unexpected. The only disadvantage of this game is no save point designed for players. But that's the point of the game, return for every turn but embrace the unknown. Recommend for those who love challenges.

A good friend of mine said, you need to buy Returnal. I watched reviews several times and that type of game just didn't interest me. Well I was at a point where I wanted a hard game and this was on sale, so I bought it. Best decision I've made for my PS5. This game to me is a metroid style game in third person. The game is challenging but not usually unfair. Let me give some examples that I wish I knew sooner. The reviews and complaints about the game said that a run can take 2 hours. I'm not sure any of my runs where that long. The first biome (level) it might take between 5 and 30 minutes to get to the boss room. The second biome, once you make it to the boss, a shortcut opens that let's your bypass 60% of the level. The third biome, once you extend the bridge, it shortens that level by 50% permanently. My point is that there are checkpoints that reward progress in this game so each run never feels like a wasted amount of time. The game also has if not the best third person combat I've ever experienced. Don't let certain reviews lead you to bypass this game. I think everyone needs to try it. It was the most addicting and fun experience I've had in awhile.

    Souls-like Shooter

As the first ps5 exclusive (not counting Demon's Souls since it's a remake), the quality of this game shines in it's visuals and smoothness. It runs at 60 fps throughout and it is definitely necessary considering the bullet hell you have to make it through. It is definitely not for a casual gamer unless you are prepared for the challenge, but it isn't too difficult if you've played any souls-like games. Replayability is high, considering it is a rogue-like and also something of a metroidvania with many items locked off until you progress further and unlock gear to reach them. It also features 10 different guns that become stronger with multiple unlocked traits as you use them.

    Fantastic, next-gen gaming experience

I mentioned this in another review, but other than Ratchet & Clank, from my review, Returnal is the only other PS5 game that truly offers you a next-gen gaming experience. The graphics are ridiculous. The game is undoubtedly difficult, particularly given the lack of a save feature, but the ever-changing and interactive world keep things fresh each run. I am hopeful that a mid-run save feature is introduced in a future update, as otherwise you must keep your PS5 in rest mode and not play any other games (or else lose your progress), but even if not, this should not deter any potential buyers.

I recently picked up Returnal Standard Edition for my PlayStation 5, and I have to say, I am blown away by this game! The graphics are stunning and truly showcase the power of the PS5 console. The gameplay is fast-paced and exhilarating, with intense boss battles and challenging levels that keep me coming back for more. The story is also incredibly immersive and keeps me engaged from start to finish.

Very cool game. I like the challenge of having to survive or its all over; however it does get frustrating at times but always stays interesting because of the changing the environment and the constant learning curve. The adaptive use of the controller is on point. I can feel the raindrops on me as they hit me right along with the sound. 3d sound headset is amazing.

Great game that shows off a little of the new gen horsepower. Beautiful graphics. Solid and tight gameplay. A very polished game. Please note, it is a difficult game. Expect to die a lot only to restart without most items you just picked up. Soon you embrace this and that’s when the game goes from frustrating to awesome. If you like a challenge, I definitely recommend. If not, wait for a sale to try it. First $70 game I’ve purchased but worth every penny.

this game is amazing. another home run for the ps5. it looks and performs amazing. No loading times. However this game is VERY hard and not for casual players. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because I did have some bugs with it and it did take a couple of updates to get everything up to snuff. They were minor but it took some tinkering around and deleting and reinstalling the game, so I'm taking a point away from the game. With that said, I would still recommend this game and really loved the atmosphere and gameplay of it.
