The Roku Ultra 4K exceeded my expectations in some respects but disappoints in others. I am pleased that it's performance is first rate, it changes apps quickly. At first several of the streaming channels were of poor quality, but after clicking in the Roku App, these improved soon afterward. I purchased the Ultra because of the headphone jack. But that is somewhat unpleasant in use. When the television connects or disconnects to the Roku there is a loud blast of noise through the headphones. On screen the volume indicator hits 100 before settling down to the memorized setting. The headphones included are extremely sensitive to ambient static electricity. There is a lot of crackling when I move around while watching tv (I have a Sony pair that are not as bad). The worst lack is that there is no mute button on the remote control. Operation is simple and organization is logical, but there are too many key clicks. Many of the apps available repeat the same availability as others and are of very low quality. A huge number of the programs shown exhibit mpeg compression artifacting largely because they are highly compressed low quality recordings from old tape or film.
Soon after loading some apps I was advised by a message on screen that the Roku could benefit from the addition of a Micro SD memory card so that it could store all the menu information on board rather than having to constantly download it. I added this memory and it does improve performance. The unit could benefit from having more memory to start with.
The Roku remote control powers the headphones and supports voice control. The voice control rarely finds anything and is nearly useless. The control also devours batteries at a very fast rate.
This appears to be the highest level of function for streaming at this time, but there is room for improvement.

Got this for $50 on black friday. Upgraded a roku 2 in my bedroom and I'm very pleased. Great picture quality. Very comparable in quality to apple 4k which I have in the living room. Apple TV a little more powerful for better performance but like the roku remote better. Also roku much better price.

Easy to setup. Carries all the streaming channels I need. Pairs well with my 4K tv. Provides clear pictures. Does not have any lag problems. Controller is easy to use, comfortable, and volume control is helpful. This came with free additional JBL earphones which have good sound quality.

Who needs a smart TV when you have Roku!?

Unless you have a TV with Roku already installed, then a great purchase to get your money's worth out of a 4K TV is to buy the Roku Ultra. This is the crown jewel for cord-cutters and satellite-abandoners. It has tons of FREE entertainment, both new and old! Standard options also include: YouTube, Crackle, Tubi TV, Pluto TV, and many other free streaming providers. There are even lots of paid subscription providers, like Sling TV and Hulu (if that's your preference). Personally, I bought the Roku Ultra for all of the FREE entertainment options, because I'm on a tight family budget. I also like this version of Roku because of the option of the headphone jack on the remote, which allows me to listen to the TV without disturbing my wife at night. Just be warned that overusing the headphone jack feature will definitely drain the two AA batteries in the remote. But that's a small sacrifice for the convenience! I also lucked out by buying the Roku Ultra during the Black Friday holiday shopping in 2018 and I saved 50% off the original price! Win-win! Even at full price, the Roku Ultra is the best device out there. Please support Roku so the company will continue to improve and continue to provide lots of FREE entertainment for us common folks! Buy it and enjoy!

Network Streaming Killed the Cable Stars

My family cut the cable (TV) cord years ago. For a while, we lived with an antenna system. Sure, we didn't get the fancier channels but boy did we save a lot of money!
Enter YouTube TV. Once this product rolled out to the masses, we decided to give it a try due to the lower monthly cost. It's an absolutely fantastic product. We had an amazon fire system for both the bedroom and living room, however Amazon and Google just don't get along. However, Roku and Google share a fantastic relationship.
The Roku is easy to use, and that's a major for my family. My kids and wife use it with ease. The simplistic controller was worrisome to me, but now that I have used it for five months, it's really grown on me. The fact that it interfaces easily with my TV set is a major plus.
The apps that come with and that are in the Roku market space are nice. We use YouTube TV, YouTube and Netflix the most. Everything runs smoothly as it should with no hiccups. A quick disclaimer though, we have ours hardwired to the internet so it can support HD (I mean, we have standards here).
If you're looking at something to stream all of the digital channels, the Roku is your best bet.

My old Roku box was causing annoying lags and was not keeping up with the current technology. I wanted to give my wife more viewing options than we currently had because she is homebound for the next few months and this box offered much more than our previous one did. I was pleasantly surprised that the handset on the new Ultra 4k allowed for private listening through the earphone jack that is in the handset! Brilliant and very convenient (IMO)!! It was an easy setup that only took a few minutes and the quality of the image on the TV (I have a 1080p Sharp but plan to upgrade to a 4k TV soon to take advantage of 4k content) improved noticeably, which I was hoping for but did not think that it would make a difference on my 6 year old TV! Extremely pleased with this device and it's ease of use!

Great Product. Tons of apps - though if you add quite a few you need to consider adding a small (2gb or 4gb) micro SD card. Quicker than most built-in TV apps - It's faster than my Sony, Samsung, Vizio and LG "native" apps accessed through the TV remote.
Super easy to use and set up. Aside from the speed / single-source nature of having all of your streaming content accessible through a dedicated source (and one that I set up as the default input on my TVs)... it's great for people who might not be as savvy with technology and using 3 remotes to get the TV, source and sound all going at the same time (read: my parents).
This is my 5th Roku and my 2nd Roku Ultra. Love the 4k capabilities, ease of use and price point.

I have the Apple TV in my parlor, and when I was setting up my office with in some sort of entertainment center, I didn’t want to drop $200 on another one. This unit went on sale for 79 bucks, so I gave it a shot. I’ve used other Roku devices at friends houses, it’s fairly easy to use has most if not all the apps you would want, Netflix, Amazon prime, VUDU, Hulu, and several others. The 4K looks great on my 4K TV, if you don’t have a 4K TV I wouldn’t bother picking this unit up, But for the price it’s almost worth it. It does have a built-in headphone jack on the remote control what I do find useful if you plan on watching something at night and people are trying to sleep. I do not regret buying this

Easy to setup and begin streaming. Roku provides lots of streaming channel options, including the Xfinity streaming app, which currently isn't available through LG's WebOS.
Like with all other Roku systems, I do wish some of the buttons were programmable. Mine came with Sling and CBS All Access as permanent buttons, neither of which I use. Also, the 4K version has two game buttons that apparently have no other function outside of game apps, which seems to be a bit of a waste.
Another nitpick, and this could be totally my own impression, but 4K streams through the Roku seem a bit softer in visual quality and color compared to streams directly through WebOS apps. Again, this could be just my own imagination so take it with a grain of salt.
In the end: the generous app support, ease-of-use, setup, micro SD card support, 4K and other features for a low price makes this a worth purchase for an entertainment center.

While other Roku models have most of the same functions offered by the Roku Ultra, this is definitely the way to go if you stream a lot of content. It's by far the fastest and most reliable way to hop between YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, ect. It's still small, but has enough presence that it won't be sliding around easy near your set-up.
The interface is clean and user-friendly (as with most of the other Rokus, of course). My only gripe with it is that there's no way to turn the unit off when not in use without unplugging it. I don't know if leaving it on indefinitely would harm it...but in my experience, excess heat + electronics = bad.
The included JBL earbuds are fine...not top of the line, but certainly useful if you intend to watch stuff at night while others are in bed (the remote has a 3mm input). I personally am not a fan of earbuds, but they get the job done.
Overall, I'd say the Roku Ultra is a sound buy if you intend to cut the cable and go all-in on wireless internet content; the price is well worth it when you factor in that you won't have to pay a monthly cable box fee anymore.

This was bought specifically because it can be used to utilize the app for our cable company and therefore, no need for extra cable boxes and extra monthly expenses! All my other apps are available to use with one devise. Very user friendly and the streaming is uninterrupted viewing with a great picture. And, the ear pods included are wonderful because they plug into the remote and so there is no restriction of movement if they were plugged into the box itself. I can continue to watch TV and my husband can go to sleep without hearing the TV going. We have two of these and considering getting another!

I now have 3 of these boxes and really like them. They are reliable, have an intuitive interface and functional remote. Possibly the most innovative feature about the Roku Ultra is the headphone jack, which makes watching TV late at night soundless for those trying to sleep.
The only con I have is the Playstation Vue app on Roku. I thought all the streamer apps would be different but they aren't and the Vue app for Roku is not as good as the app is for Amazon Fire TV. Don't get me wrong...it functions okay but some of the features in the interface on the Fire TV are not in the app on Roku so be aware of that going in.

I have owned firestick and rokus. By far this is the best one yet, it's superfast to process your request. Awesome 4k picture, nice find remote feature, also comes with JBL earbuds to plug in to your remote and volume control on the remote as well. It's a little bulky but maybe is needed for the fast processor, bought on sale during black Friday for $50 , wish I would have bought another at that price. Haven't seen it on sale at that price since then

I already had an APPLE TV 4K device hooked up to my living room television and it's great.... just GREAT. I wasn't willing to spend that much for a 2nd streaming device for my bedroom so I bought the Roku Ultra 4K which comes with JBL headphones which attach to the remote control for a more personal listening experience.
The setup had to be stopped and re-started because of a glitch somewhere, but the 2nd time then worked flawlessly and it was set up in less that 5-10 minutes.. The features are numerous and I'm still finding new and nice things it can do, like a large selection of screen savers and background themes. One is an aquarium in 4K which appears to be a real video of gorgeous colorful exotic fish swimming slowly around in a beautiful aquarium! So pretty to just stare at!
It does NOT have the beauty of the menu layout of different channels that Apple has, but it is quite functional. The remote actually has a better feel and response than the Apple TV's remote. And it's very convenient that the JBL headphones plug right into the remote control.
There are some apps which Apple TV has and Roku does not; but also some apps which Roku has but Apple TV does not have. The "main" ones, like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc are all there of course. I've found in my searches - so far - that there are lots of PAY APPS in Roku. And most of the FREE apps in Roku don't really offer many interesting features.
Frankly, I've found that the ROKU remote feels better in my hand and works more "reliably" than the Apple remote. If you've ever been frustrated by the 'touch' features on the Apple remote, you'll be pleased with the ROKU remote which is more 'old school' but easier to use. It is, of course, LARGER than the Apple remote but that also makes it easier to use in my opinion.
It's also a little easier to set up 'Closed Captions' with ROKU which is helpful when watch British productions where actors have thick accents as well as for older users who don't always 'catch' every word in a dialog. Apple's technique requires using a finger to swish up (or is it down?), retrieve a window on the top of the screen, selected closed captions, then language, then go through another swish or button push to get rid of that upper screen window. On Roku, you can just set it up from the menu before you begin.
In summary, I really love the new ROKU ULTRA 4K. I also love my APPLE TV 4K. They both "do the job" and are fun to use. The addition of the JBL headphones which plug into the ROKU ULTRA remote perhaps makes the ROKU product **better** for my bedroom and **cheaper** as well. (But I would NOT give up my Apple TV 4K in the living room either!)

I love how easy this device was to set up, use and connect. So much so that I bought two! I bought an Apple TV before this and returned it. Cool remote. But it needed to be reset all the time and the remote was hard to use. This Roku device and remote I love! During the set up process it connects to your tv. ONE REMOTE NOW! Plus it came with headphones. I wake up early and my wife sleeps late. She can watch tv and I’m not disturbed. It even links to 4K tv content. Why buy the 4K tv if you can’t see the amazing video. Highly recommend this device!

I upgraded from an older Roku LT and the Ultra + 4k is much, much, faster. Easy to use interface and comes with a remote that can be programmed (very easily) to control the power and volume on your TV. The remote is a serious improvement and the headphone jack on it is a great feature for when you don't want to disturb others. The remote also has a voice command function, but it only works within the main Roku interface, not individual apps (that you would stream with, for example). The only thing I wish it had was a mute button on the remote.

Bought this to replace my 1st Gen FireTV. There were no issues with the FireTV, i just wanted a simpler interface and better performance. I already had a Roku stick on another TV and have had no problems with it. Setup was easy and it picked up all my apps i had installed on my Roku stick since i used the same account. Only had to sign into each app again. I'm happy with the performance. Thing i don't like though is the advertisements on the side in the main menu. Having Power, volume buttons and headphone jack on the remote is a plus.

The Roku Ultra 4k streaming media player works great. The interface is fast, the quality is fantastic, and it has every streaming service we use. Setup was simple and didn't take long at all. The remote works well and fits nicely in your hand. Our only complaint is that we wish the remote was backlit. The good news for us is that I just programmed it to our universal Logitech remote, which is backlit, so the Roku remote is just a spare now.
I would definitely buy this again for another TV.

The Roka Ultra has far exceeded my expectations! At first, I was going to buy one of the lower models. After careful discussion with the sales staff, I decided to bump it up a couple of levels. The headphones that plug into the remote control - and allow for private listening, is AMAZING - especially if you live in an apartment with neighbors above/below, like I do. If you are debating between this and lower models - spend the extra $$. I promise, you won't be disappointed!

This is an upgrade from my Roku 2, which still works well. The integrated ethernet port makes a huge difference in buffering and speed. Also freeing up wifi bandwidth for other devices. The picture is sharper however that is likely aided by a wired network. The remote short cut keys have been upgraded. The older ones had a blockbuster button which is now obscolete. Jbl earbuds are a nice bonus. I absolutely recomend this to everyone but especially for people with older wifi routers.
