Safe House is pretty derivative. It's one part Bourne, one part Man on Fire, and one part anything with Jack Ryan in it (The Hunt for Red October, Sum of All Fears, etc.). In spite of Reynold's character's desire to prove himself a worthy field agent, his fish-out-of-water status throughout most of the movie practically screams of Jack Ryan's ever uttered, "I'm just an analyst." On the other hand, Safe House is still entertaining. Unoriginal as it may be, Reynold's manages to sell his character just fine, and Denzel has never not been entertaining to watch. He continues to bring his best to whatever role he's in, and doesn't seem to be bothered by the lackluster proceedings that surround him. Denzel's just gonna do his Denzel thing, and it's awesome.

Denzel Washington is a throwback to a time when the craft and the ability to explore and demonstrate that craft was the most important reason for getting an acting job. Today it is mostly the beefcake looks that get you in the door. But I compare Denzel with the late, great actor William Holden--a rock-solid, independent, intelligent, moral tower of strength. In this action-packed spy thriller, Denzel's character is being hunted because he has done the right thing--exposing dirty, black-ops secrets and off-the-books shenanigans by the CIA. Plenty of surprising twists and a great cast support Denzel as a rogue agent.

If you're a fan of Denzel Washington doing action movies, then Safe House is a good recommendation. The plot might be generic but it's all about the execution. Action wise, there's definitely plenty of it in the beginning and end but the movie quiets down during the middle section. By then, it's almost as if they didn't know what to do with the plot progression and we end up following the characters waiting for something to happen. Ryan Reynolds is also solid as the young naive agent who has to bring Denzel's character down.

The movie is a solid spy movie filled with plot twists, action, and cleaver use of THINKING about clues. The acting and production values are excellent. The extra features are numerous and well-done. The previews are a bit of a disappointment as they are basically fragments in a historical commercial of Universal Studio.

Safe House doesn't distinguish itself or serve up any tasty spy-vs-spy surprises. But it's a decent genre pic, confidently shot and eagerly assembled, and it boasts performances from Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds that are worth the price of admission alone. Thankfully, though, Universal's Blu-ray release isn't quite so flawed. With an adrenaline-pumping video presentation, a pulse-pounding DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track, and a solid selection of extras, fans will get plenty of bang for their high definition buck.

I was totally engrossed in this movie about a man who turns his back on his U.S. government job because what he's seen he feels as being wrong and the person who is trying to track him down after "losing" him. We then are thrown into a chase between the good and the bad (who is who?) and find ourselves wondering what would we do if we were in his position? I like movies that make me think.
