  • wonderful escape in a difficult time

    My family and I watched this recently (my kids are 3 & 5). As I write this we are experiencing the Covid-19 crisis and the national outrage over Police Brutality. It is wonderful to be able to escape the madness for a couple hours and retreat to the idyllic silent era of nearly a century ago. Harold Lloyd's character is as charming and naive as the America of the 1920's in which this film takes place. The humor holds up even today and my children were entertained by the monochrome images with dialog they could not hear. The Criterion edition is amazing in it's clarity and depth. There are quite a few interesting extras worth watching to find out exactly how the building stunts were accomplished. It is amazing what could be achieved with simple in-camera trickery, long before the era of big budget special effects and CGI. Give this a watch. You will not be dissapointed.

    It's surprising how few silent films Criterion currently has in its library. Thankfully, Safety Last! is one of them. Great film, and it looks great on Blu-ray.
