Notes: - 2280 size so make sure your motherboard is compatible - Make sure you are using your Gen 5 M.2 slot if available - Do not remove sticker on SSD module The Samsung 9100 PRO is a Gen 5x4 NVMe SSD that I’ve been using in my PC for the past couple weeks. Installation wise your experience will vary. My only open Gen 5 slot was under my graphics card prompting me to remove it and the built in SSD heatsink on my motherboard. If you are in the same boat, be sure to leave the sticker on the SSD itself and remove any protective plastic film from the thermal paste on the heatsink portion of your motherboard. Compared to my older Samsung 990 PRO 2TB driver which I considered the previous gold standard for storage this drive blows that one out of the water. I achieved double the speeds in sequential reads and writes (9700 and 10200 MB/s respectfully) and slightly improved performance in random reads/writes testing in Crystal Disk Mark. Transferring large folders of files I was seeing transfers of around 3.3 GB/s moving things around on the same disk. At the time of this review writing (May 2025), there isn’t a faster consumer drive that you can get. This has been great for the movie and video editing that I do giving great speed when it comes to organizing my clips. From a reliability perspective I have no reason to believe this SSD won’t perform like previous Samsung SSDs which has been nothing short of stellar. Since I have used Samsung SSDs in the past I had their Magician software which is helpful for tracking drive performance and firmware upgrades to keep the drives health and up to date. Overall, I'm very impressed with this SSD performance!

📦 UNBOXING: Inside the box, you’ll find the SSD itself and the manual that includes installation steps and warranty information. It doesn’t include a screw, so you may want to check that you have one. They often come pre-installed in your computer’s m.2 slot. Other than that, it was packaged securely with some rigid cardboard material to prevent damage. 🛠️ SETUP: Setup is easy, and since this variant of the 9100 Pro doesn’t have heatsink, physical compatibility is not an issue. It uses the 2880 form factor of the m.2 specification, so it should work with most desktop PC motherboards and most laptops with an m.2 NVMe SSD slot, and even some handheld gaming PC’s like the ROG Ally X. Installation is as simple as sliding the SSD into the slot, then installing the mounting screw. Be careful not to bend the SSD, and make sure the pins on the SSD align with the connector on the motherboard. You can look at the diagram in the included manual if it’s your first time installing an m.2 SSD, but you can usually slide the SSD into the slot at a slight angle. Then once you have it in, you can lay the SSD down flush to the mounting screw hole and install the screw. 💿 SOFTWARE: Samsung recommends using their Samsung Magician software to keep the SSD firmware up to date, and also use other features like over-provisioning to increase the lifespan of your SSD, performance benchmarking to see if your SSD is performing as expected, and data migration if you intend to make the 9100 Pro your primary drive and want to clone the OS and data. One oddity I did find was that after installing and cloning my previous drive’s data to the 9100 Pro, my existing installation of Samsung Magician claimed that my new drive was not genuine. The app didn’t say there was a newer version of Samsung Magician available, but I decided to re-install the latest version directly from their website. After doing so, Samsung Magician recognized the SSD as genuine and unlocked all of its supported capabilities. So just make sure to install the latest version from their website for the optimal experience. 💾 PERFORMANCE: As for performance, it’ll certainly vary depending on your computer’s capabilities, but you’ll achieve the most out of it if you’re using hardware that supports PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs. The 9100 Pro can achieve a theoretical 14,800 MB/s read and 13,400 MB/s write in sequential workloads, but if you’re limited to PCIe 4.0, then you’ll achieve only half of those speeds. Testing on a PCIe 4.0 system, I was able to obtain around 6110 MB/s read and 6650 MB/s write on ATTO Disk Benchmark. If you’re planning to use it in a PS5—it’s really not worth shelling out the additional money for since the PS5 will never make use of the 9100 Pro’s bandwidth. If you plan to use this in a PCIe 4.0 computer and soon upgrade to PCIe 5.0, I think whether or not it will be worth choosing over a Gen 4 drive will depend a lot on your storage speed needs. If you need high throughput for AI workloads, video editing, or if you do a lot of large file transfers, then perhaps “future proofing” will be the right call. But if you’re just gaming, then the 9100 Pro won’t realistically yield you any real benefit. That being said, compared to a lot of other Gen 5 SSDs on the market, this one does have lower power consumption which could make it appealing for laptops that support Gen 5 drives. However, you should still expect there to be higher power consumption compared to Gen 4 drives. So if you’re using a laptop that supports only PCIe 4.0, this drive could theoretically have a negative impact on battery life compared to using a Gen 4 SSD, but it’s hard to say by how much. 🧐 CONCLUSION: Samsung is a bit late to the Gen 5 NVMe SSD market, but it is putting out a good product that has lower power consumption compared to a lot of other Gen 5 SSDs, and delivers great performance, but isn’t necessarily the best in class among Gen 5 drives. However, Samsung is a well-established manufacturer of NAND flash memory. I have been using Samsung SSDs since 2011, and my overall experience has been very positive. I don’t expect that to change with the 9100 Pro. Samsung backs their products with a 5 year warranty, and they have delivered firmware updates to resolve issues that have occurred on drives in the past. The same cannot always be said for lesser-established brands. If you’re just looking to put an SSD in your PS5, skip this and go for the more affordable 980 Pro—it just doesn’t make sense to pay nearly twice the price for it to be used in the PS5. But if you have a newer workstation PC that supports Gen5 drives that will be doing AI workloads, video editing, or frequent large file transfers, the Samsung 9100 Pro is a great drive from a well-established brand that makes it easy to recommend.

Samsung – 9100 PRO 2TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 5x4 NVMe, Speeds Up to 14700 MB/s The Samsung 9100 Pro NVMe is a standard 2280 NVMe drive. It can be installed in Laptops or Desktops. This drive comes without a heatsink, but one can be added if you require one. All chips are on the top side making heatsink addition easy. Stated speeds are up to 14,700 MB/s in a perfect world. I’m running an MSI motherboard that supports PCIe 5.0x4 but with a 13th gen i7 CPU. The speeds I am getting are just above 10,000 MB/s but this is well above what I am seeing with the PCIe 4.0x4 Samsung drive currently in my system. Probably a BIOS update on my motherboard would fix the speed issue but it is lightning fast as is. It could also be my CPU that is well over a year old, before PCIe 5.0x4 was something people were using. Overall speed of my computer was enormously improved using the Samsung 9100 Pro. Temperature of the drive has never gotten even close to throttling. If you’re going to push the speeds to the maximum a heatsink may be a good idea. This drive is well suited for gaming and video editing.

I am a big fan of Samsung memory products, including their ssds and NVME drives. I probably own at least half a dozen of their nvme products, and I think this is the best one yet. I also have several ssds that were amazing back in the day but have since been passed by the faster pcie drives. One big benefit has got to be its PCIE 5.0 speeds. I forget what the drive is labeled at speed wise but I remember darn near hitting it (which really surprised me due to all the marketing fluff around computer components these days). Read and writes are both blazing fast. I used the drive in my personal do-it-all desktop, and I was able to notice small improvements in the speed it took to launch large programs, like Office. I didn’t notice much benefit opening smaller, app-sized programs though. My guess is this drive would be amazing for video/photo editing due to its speed. For those wondering about games, I can confirm that it sped up my game loading times by at least a few seconds, even if it didn’t necessarily help the FPS or overall playability of my games. I also appreciate the work Samsung put in to keep the drive cool(er). My prior drive was a 1TB Samsung PCIE, and I could totally tell when it got thermal throttled. Not the case here—at least not in my usage. Power usage is a few watts higher than the pcie 3.0 or 4.0 drives, but that’s to be expected with more throughput of PCIE 5.0. The highest wattage I’ve seen it using is 12w, or so. My last drive was using 7-9w, so this is a good “price vs wattage” deal for the increase in speed (and size, in my case). Do you need this drive? I fully recommend it. However, it’s pretty pricey right now (at release), and if you already have a PCIE 4.0 drive, I’m not sure the increased throughput is wroth the price, unless you work with heavy duty engineering programs or multimedia programs. However, if you’re already in the market for a new NVME drive, or looking for an upgrade from a SSD or PCIE 3.0 drive, then you’ll definitely feel the speed with the 9100 Pro

I've been using an HP Pavilion All-in-One desktop for many years now. It came with Windows 10 and as you may know, Windows 10 will end support by the end of this year. Since this computer had a 7th generation Intel Core i7-7700T CPU running at 2.90 GHz and no TPM, I couldn't upgrade to Windows 11 without running a hack and compromising my system. By today's standard, this computer is a dinosaur. I decided it was time to get a new PC. Rather than buying a ready made PC, I decided to build a computer from scratch. The last time I built one was back in 2009. It lasted me for 8 years but then I got the All-In-One. After researching all the various motherboards online I settled on the ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero motherboard. It seemed to me to have all the upgradability I would need for years to come. I installed 64GB of RAM, an MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 5070 and this Samsung 9100 Pro 2TB NVME M2 SSD. Since I mostly do video and photo editing, I wanted to make the computer as fast as I could so it would last me many years. I have to say, the speed of the SSD is incredible. The PC boots in record time and I am able to see the difference when loading applications between what I was used to and what I am seeing now. Loading the video and audio clips from the SSD into the editor as well as rendering out and saving a video using DaVinci Resolve in the past could take so much time when the video had multiple tracks, transitions, effects, and sometimes 16 audio tracks using a spinning hard drive. Now with this Samsung 9100 SSD, it finished transferring the files before I could even make coffee. I'm not used to transfers so fast, what am I going to do with all the extra time I saved? Now that I'm getting into AI, I need all the speed and power I can get. I'm sure this system will save me a lot of time.

I wanted more storage and fast storage and this was the ticket for me. Installation was fairly quickly for my desktop tower. I would say though that you will want to be prepared to buy a small screw depending upon your board as mine did not have the retaining screw pre-installed and one does not come with this SSD. Once the case was off, it took maybe 5 minutes for the physical installation. There may be some configurations you need to perform through the OS depending upon OS version and PC build - like switching to/from RAID and designating your boot drive or primary storage. That comes with the territory so to speak but best to be aware BEFORE your install. Once installed, in my case not as primary or boot, it was exactly as expected - fast search and storage very quick for me to move data form my existing drives to the new drive and I was very happy. There is data migration software available from a number of sources including the manufacturer for those that wish to go that route or are replacing a drive or just adding back up. I have no complaints and it certainly is quick.

Whoa! The Samsung 9100 Pro SSD is blistering fast. I've just finished reimaging my PC and whoa whoa whoa! I'm getting average 12GBps read/writes, which is very near on what the specs claim (14.7GBps). I think I'm getting a slight lag because I have an older motherboard or may need to do a motherboard BIOS update. This is literally 1.6x what my old SSD was performing at - which is stunning. I normally use a 512SSD as my primary Windows drive, and a 2TB for gaming/storage, but after doing some speed tests decided to reimage my entire PC and make the 9100 Pro my primary and only drive. The only real catch with the Samsung 9100 Pro is there's no included heatsink (at least in this version). So if you want one for a PS5, make sure you get the one with the included heatsink but for PC, Gaming, or if you're in graphics design - it's impossible for me to fault the speed and capacity. If you get Samsung 9100 Pro, do yourself a favor - reimage Windows, do a clean install, and enjoy the speed! A worthy PC upgrade! Recommended!!

The Samsung series has been, for quite a while, the go to series for many professional, and or serious gamers. PC Gamers, along with video editors, require the fastest speeds across storage, graphics, etc and Samsun Pro 9000 series is here to bring the heat, but no not that kind of heat (more on that). Installing the drive is like any other SSD. You want to ensure you install it in the correct mount as some mounts have different speeds. I have my motherboard documentation handy for times liek this to ensure that I have it mounted correctly. This drive replaces the C drive on my gaming machine, as it is the fastest component (the system is Windows 11 professional) and it's imperative to have your main drive as your fastest drive. I used the motherboard heatsink on this and never had any issue with heat or any sort of throttling. As always, Samsun leads the way and I am replacing an 8000 series drive on here, note that the Pro denotes a higher level of service, but unclear as to that moniker's full explanation. I'm very happy with the drive, Windows 11 is very fast, no issues installing it and it runs cool. Samsung has another winner on their hands here and long live PC gaming!
