SOT is a fun pirate simulator if you want to take to the seas and search for buried treasure. It's best played with others as manning a ship is easier with crew members (you have the option of sailing alone or friends or open). Also, considering that this game is particularly about sailing ( SEA of Thieves) it helps to have people to talk to and goof off with as you crash through waves. Constantly updated and with problems often quickly addressed, SOT just might be one of the greatest time passers of all time. It's not for everyone, but it's different than most games out today. Be warned... pirates are pirates... and your hard earned treasure is never safe til you've delivered it to port.... oh and sharks bite....

Ahoy there,
We're glad that you're having a good time sailing the seven seas in Sea of Thieves! We agree that the best Sea of Thieves experience is to play with a crew of your best mates. If you're having trouble getting into a good group with the in-game matchmaking, you could consider joining an Xbox Club focused on Sea of Thieves or using the Looking for Group feature on Xbox or in the Xbox App!
Hopefully, these tools can help you enjoy Sea of Thieves even more!

This game is fun but if you encounter another crew, you will 9 times out of 10 end up fighting them. Having a full crew of 4 only ups you chances of doing this. You can partner with randoms or have awesome friends.

Love Sea of Thieves. Best Buy shouldn't advertise that you get a free souvenir coin if they aren't going to honor that. It's still on their website. Not worth paying higher price and no coin.

Your adventure on the high sea awaits.
Sword Fighting... Check.
Treasure hunting...Check
Ships rolling over the waves... Check
Danger from other pirates, monsters and storms wanting to take your life and your treasure.... Check, check and triple check.
Sea of Thieves is very cool. This game successfully puts together a play set of muskets, swords, ships and pirate outfits that allow you to lose yourself in the game and become a pirate. It's set in an open world you share with everyone else playing the game. All of you going after various treasures or skeleton crews at the same time. Also you can at any time choose to go and fight any of the other human players in the game. This can at times be terrifying when you realize that you can't not play with other humans. At any moment the player in that ship that you see on the horizon might decide to see if you have any treasure on your ship and come after you.
And there isn't anything to stop them. Except your own musket, sword and skill you gain while sailing the seas. This has led to multiple situations in my own game where I've had to fight off another player or two to keep them from getting a treasure chest I had just dug up. The best advice I can give you is to realize that while the pirate you are having to fight might have a super cool hat, peg leg, and a hook with tattoos and a sweet looking sword, he/she actually isn't any more powerful than you are. All of the "upgrades" you can buy for your ship or pirate are only cosmetic. This means that the one guaranteed advantage one ship has over another is the number of crew.
Your crew can consist of up to 4 pirates working together. It supports a closed crew where just friends can be on the same ship or you can join a crew of random pirates. I've enjoyed playing with my kids. So we take the smaller ship and there is usually just the two of us. If you choose to do the random assignment the community has generally been great. Lots of people have been very helpful and talkative while sailing. I can't say that I've made any life long friends yet but I don't encourage people trying to do that on the internet. Ultimately this always online structure and being thrust into a world and forced to interact with other humans will be the appeal or repelling force for this game.
Much like playing dress up and imaging to be a pirate growing up, you are only going to get out of this game as much as you put into. There is almost zero narrative to be found in this game. As the point of this game is to do pirate stuff. So if a compelling story is what you come to games for I would certainly encourage you to pass this game. The journey is the point. Hopefully this helps anyone on the fence about this game, and if you think you'll be getting the game.... Well I'll see you on the high seas. Best of luck and remember to put the kegs of black powder in the crows nest. That way if it explodes it won't damage your ship.

Hey Shiloh,
Thank you for sharing your very thoughtful review of Sea of Thieves! We're glad that you've found a life of infamy and piracy to be a fun one.
Great call on not getting intimidated by other pirates outfitted with lots of cool swag, too. At the end of the day, your best tools are your own skills and the competency (and size) of your crew. Thank you again for sharing your feedback, and we hope you continue to sail the high seas for a long time to come.

This game gives you a sandbox environment to have some great pirating adventures if you give it a chance, but it is not for gamers who need a very structured gaming environment all the time. The best description I have read and can provide is SoT is like being given a toy pirate as a kid, and you played with this toy pirate by creating by acting adventures either alone or with friends. You loved playing with this toy pirate, and only wished there was some way to make the adventures more real. That's what SoT CAN be if you let it. It provides an interactive play field where multiple "kids" get to play out this pirate fantasy in the same place with others doing the same thing simultaneously. For those who have realized this potential, SoT can be amazing.
However, if you are someone who needs to have your game completely defined for you, telling you what to do all the time and have little interest in this type of sand box adventuring, this game will probably not make you happy.
Word of warning even if you think you are ready to make SoT your personal adventure gaming environment... currently there are a very limited actual pre-created adventures provided in the game, and most of these basically require you to do similar things. You will be required to complete an egregious quantity of repetitive fetch quests that has ever been required in ANY video game to gain the sweet bounty needed to make your pirate the envy of the seas. If Rare does not keep adding some form of content to the game it will risk losing its fanbase quickly. Read reviews and forums before you buy the the game to make sure you understand what it is and what it isn't before you put your coin on the table to purchase the game. If you go in with a full understanding of what you will find in SoT, you mught just have some of the best gaming adventures you have ever had.

Are you feeling like you need a gaming change of pace? Do you want to just chill and have some random fun while you game? Do you need a game that is more cooperative and more of a hang out spot than your typical competitive FPS or Multi player game on line?
Yes? This game is for you. I gave it 4 stars only because it is a bit shallow. There is not much "there" there with regards to stuff to do in the game, so I question how much longevity there is in the game.
That being said, the game is strangely pleasant to play. There's nothing specifically compelling in the game, but yet, there you are playing still 2 or 3 hours later.
I highly recommend it if you want a change of pace with one caveat and that is play it with a group of friends. It's horrible to play solo and can be hit or miss playing as a random addition to a group of 3 random people.
In any case, i do recommend it highly for anyone looking for something "different" to play right now.

This game feels like a beta indie game. There's almost no content currently and I wish I hadn't bought it. For one, if you purchase the version from the XBox/Microsoft store you get two copies. One for PC and one for XBox, but not with the XBox physical disc purchase. There are already PC players using cheats like infinite health or aimbot. And to my knowledge there's no anti-cheat device in place. The only fun aspect of this game is multiplayer, and that's only fun if you find someone who's fun to play with. Honestly this game should be no more than $30, for the content it has to offer currently. There's no upgrading anything in the game. The only thing to unlock are vanity skins. After collecting treasure and dropping it off for a few hours, we headed to a Fort. We beat that brought the treasure back again and now all that's left is to defeat the Kraken. So currently the entire game can be played in about five hours. You should wait until more content is released before purchasing this game, and if you do, buy the digital version so you get a PC copy for free.

I got this game to play with some friends who were extremely interested in it. It's fun to play with them some, but the reviews about lack of content and end game aren't too far off. It's definitely a grind to get enough treasure to pay for anything interesting, and even then I believe anything you can buy is simply cosmetic.
But if you play it to find buried treasure, kill skeletons and plunder other people's treasure while enjoying time with your friends, it's not a bad way to pass the time.

Solo play is very lacking in this game. It's much harder and insanely repetitive. It consists of go here, find this, go there, and repeat. It's similar in multiplayer, but at least you can have fun goofing around with friends. It has its warts, but that part is enjoyable. I do hope they add future features to the game to make it less repetitive. It's fun now, but eventually it could become very stale.

Having some friends to play this game with you is amazing. Taking a pirate ship, exploring the open seas for treasure and adventure, and working with (or against...) other pirates is fun. Solo, this game is not nearly as much fun. But the multi-player adventures you will have are amazing and I really recommend this game for that.

This game has some pretty decent charm about it. While it's not heavily layered with endless content and Shi options are only two - this game is designed to play with others and not get too serious. Light hearted and a good time with the right crew. If you're looking for complex plot twists and endless possibilities you'll be disappointed.

Bought this as a birthday gift for my son, and while he can play by himself, he loves the online aspect of playing with friends. It’s visually fun, although a warning for younger kids, the characters can drink grog (yes, alcohol), and then throw up. Kinda gross and not necessarily appropriate for younger players.

The pace of Sea of Thieves is slow during most of the game. Nonetheless, when there is a battle it can get incredibly hectic! There is no real story to the game (other than the free DLCs that have timed events). You take out of this game what you put in. It will depend heavily on who you are playing with, but a few months in I have a steady crew and sailing around is guaranteed to be a blast. I've never experienced a game where you could play for hours without really achieving anything and still come out thinking it was a great experience.

My first experience with Sea of Thieves was on Xbox Gamepass Ultimate. I honestly had no idea that Microsoft had created such a well crafted game exclusively for the Xbox ecosystem. It is games like this that make me proud to be an owner of an Xbox Series X console.
This game has many modes of play: Sick of grief gamers? Just jump on a sloop and run solo missions until you make Pirate Legend. Want some company? Then you should choose an "Open Crew" and a Galleon that can hold up to four players.
The detail in the game is what gets me. I can still remember the first time I dove into the dark ocean, after a crewmate yelled "Ship sighted!" I found myself holding my Series X controller close to my body, eyes wide open, as I twisted and turned with my character who swam into the lower levels of the capsized, sunken galleon. If there was treasure to be found in this skeleton of a ship I was going to find it!
I was impressed by how your character begins drowning slowly if you stay underwater for too long. Again, the details in this game make it great. The water looks amazing. Also, the weather changes in the game. You'll find yourself telling crewmates to climb up into the crow's nest and give you a compass reading once the creepy fog rolls in and envelops your ship.
After playing this game for a few months on Gamepass I just had to buy the physical copy. If you're into games that are fun, adventure-filled, but at the same time lighthearted at times; you should probably pick this game up!

Fun game on its own but much better with others. Amazing water graphics. Although it seems like a limited amount to do, give it time. The game has more than you realize. The developers have a five year schedule for updates. I’m sure it will grow over time.
