Solid but Underwhelming

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is coming off of the excellent Rise of the Tomb Raider, but with a new developer at the helm (Crystal Dynamics is mostly working on a different project). For the most part, the game continues the successful formula of the previous games since the 2013 reboot and tells a solid story in doing so. However, I can't help but feel underwhelmed. It might be TOO similar to the last game and didn't really take any risks.
I think the story is weaved in nicely throughout the game and tells a darker, more personal story as Lara engages in more self-reflection and realizes some of the consequences of her actions on those around her. The story ends in a somewhat cliche way, but is mostly satisfying on completion. I will say, the acting, writing, and animation on some of the side characters feels repetitive and underdeveloped. This game feels trapped in 2009 (or earlier) in that sense, especially with games like Uncharted in existence that do this far better. It's clear some areas of the game were given less love and attention.
The game feels a little short overall, even with much to do and collect. There weren't enough set piece moments or exploration areas to give it that grand adventure feel. I do love the jungle setting though, and the game looks pretty good on the PS4 Pro. The frame rate can get a little choppy though, as these consoles start to show their age. One thing I found far worse than the previous two games is the combat. It just didn't feel as good and there was hardly enough of it. It felt like a missing/underdeveloped segment of the game when it used to be a strength of the series.
Challenge tombs return as the best part of the experience and there's some crafty puzzles to satisfy those looking to actually do some tomb raiding. That said, nine of them didn't feel like enough at launch (especially with 7 more coming in paid dlc) and I can't help but feeling like there should have been more considering they're the best part of the game. If the main game had been more fleshed out or diverse, then maybe it wouldn't have been so noticeable.
Enemy AI and player movement/animation are two areas that feel stuck in the past and hurt the gameplay experience. There were many jumps or climbs that felt glitchy/on rails instead of natural and smooth. The little combat you do engage in feels like you're fighting against clueless robot humans. Not enough attention was given to this (especially considering it's the third game now).
Overall, I enjoyed Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but not as much as the other two games before it and it feels like it's aging quickly. This was largely more of the same instead of building upon what came before and it felt rushed/on a smaller budget instead of making that leap you would expect from a sequel. It's worth your time, but make sure you know what you're getting and set reasonable expectations. It's good, but nothing more. That's okay if you enjoy these games, but I think everyone would expect a bigger leap from the next game in the franchise.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a great game. The graphics were pretty good for the most part. The story was engaging with different moments that made me feel different emotions in different parts of the game. In terms of gameplay, puzzles seemed either way too easy, or very tough to figure out. Combat and exploration were pretty good and there are a few new mechanics to help Lara along the way. Though, I was not a huge fan of how some skills that Lara had initially in the previous game had to be unlocked later in the game.
All in all. Shadow is a fine game.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a great end to the trilogy that began with 2013's Tomb Raider reboot. If you haven't played those games, you can still largely dive in here without missing much. The story is fairly basic, but the action is exciting and there are scenes that allow the characters to really express their personalities. The scenery and environments are absolutely stunning, and you really feel like you're exploring ancient mesoamerican ruins and cities trapped in time. There is a large focus on exploration and puzzle solving, with less combat than previous games. This can make several of the skills focused on combat and weapon upgrades feel a bit pointless for some of the game - these are systems that mattered more in previous entries but are retained here - but overall lends the game a great exploration feel and sets it apart from others in the genre more heavily focused on combat. Overall, a great title for anyone interested in action adventure games, puzzle solving, or exploring lost civilizations rendered in cutting-edge graphical fidelity.

A Solid Game but I Expected a Bit More

If you liked the first two games in the series, you will probably like this one. If you like other single-player story based games like Uncharted, you will probably like this one. It was very visually appealing and I personally enjoyed the combat (and the new focus on stealth) as well as the puzzles. I was really glad that this Tomb Raider game finally had a photo mode, and while other games have better photo modes I still appreciated the one included. The story was a bit underwhelming to me, and I wish there had been more of a connection to the previous games (perhaps including more past characters like they did Jonah). The story wasn't the most memorable, and I had issues with some of the side characters. The steelbook edition was nice but nothing very special.
I still consider this a solid Tomb Raider game and a decent conclusion to the trilogy. I felt the gameplay was fun and I was engaged enough to want to keep playing, but the story wasn't the strongest. I felt Shadow was a better game overall than Rise of the Tomb Raider, but in my opinion it was not consistent and compelling enough to surpass the first game in the trilogy.

This game provides more of the same great Tomb Raider combo of exploration, puzzle solving, platforming, and action that has been present since the original reboot. It's a worthy conclusion to a great gaming trilogy.

If I could, I'd rate this an 8.5. The graphics are beautiful, the exploration is amazing and the story is very good. There's definitely less of an emphasis on gunplay, especially compared to the previous two games. But that's probably a good thing. The combat can be a bit frustrating. There are multiple times when you're only allowed to use the bow and it makes close fighting near impossible, and quite frankly, not all that fun. I had more than a few rage quits. However, that said, overall it's an incredible game with absolutely stunning levels of detail and care that went into creating it. And the story is well worth seeing through. I recommend, especially if you're a fan of the reboot series and can accept dying a lot in a handful of unfair combat situations.

Love Indiana Jones-like story line. I've always preferred action-adventure themed games. Graphics are crisp and the huge jungle world is lush. Solving puzzles and searching for tools and experiences to help upgrade is one thing, but how to properly apportion your supplies can help with progress and survival. I would definitely recommend this game to those who are into this genre of video games.

Tomb raider fans rejoice! Finally it has released two weeks ago and of course I had the pre-order. This franchise has never let me down. It is action packed and has many hours of game play as you go through the story mode and have side mission, tombs and artifacts to find and complete. The graphics, game play, and storyline were all incredible!

The gameplay on this game is what sold me. The variety and interesting puzzle solving in the tombs is amazing. The story is the best in this new trilogy, although still a bit below games like Spiderman, God of War, or Uncharted. For those who were bored by the end of the last game this one will definitely feel like more of the same, but if you loved the other ones then you will find a lot to love here too.

The rebooted Tomb Raider series has been one of the best surprises in the last 6 years. From what they started in Tomb Raider to the open world in Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider continues the fun. Less emphasis of gunplay and more on exploration and puzzles, the 3rd entry is one I can highly recommend.

Game play is fun, and story is intriguing, but the controls aren't as smooth as the previous two games. Many times, running into a wall or stopping and jerking. I tried a few different controllers and they all resulted in the same less fluid motion. After putting in one of the previous games, I confirmed it was the game mechanics, itself. Almost made the game unplayable.

I am playing on an OLED TV with an original PS4 and the graphics are stunning! The game plays more like the original Tomb Raider of 2014 than the more recent Rise of the Tomb Raider. Plenty of puzzles and action to hold my attention. I am only about an hour into the game but would definitely purchase it again.
