As Good As It Gets In This Price Range

When I inherit a fortune from some long-lost relative (or if the latest Nigerian scam letter I got actually turns out to be true), then I will buy and review a nice OLED tv, or, at the very least, a Sony 900 series. Since I am firmly ensconced in the paycheck-to-paycheck real world, I will have to settle for this entry-level 4K HDR TV. I give it 5 stars because it is an excellent performer for the price I paid on sale. It has it's flaws, especially compared to more sophisticated TVs, but ... a 55" 900 series Sony is more than three times as much; an OLED 55" is considerably more than that. This TV has an amazingly good picture; better than I expected. The contrast is very good. The blacks look black to me. It is easy to tweak settings to your liking, and I suggest experimentation. This TV will decode HDR, but does not have the brightness to do it any real justice, and neither will any TV in this price range. It certainly doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching my 4K HDR Blu-rays, and without a better TV sitting next to it for comparison, I'm not going to think about it much. I divorced myself from the wildly overpriced cable companies over a year ago. I rely on Sling for live TV, an antenna for local OTA broadcasts, and also subscribe to Prime Video. I have been using a Roku Ultra, and I am never going back. The built-in Roku was a big selling point for me with this TV. The TV was easy to set up. The Roku interface is intuitive and well laid out. The remote is elegant in it's simplicity, but if you are still using a cable box, the lack of number keys may be a detriment. The remote does not have the voice activated search or the headphone jack that you will find with the Roku Ultra streaming box, but you can easily obtain both of these features by downloading the Roku app to your phone, and use your phone as the remote. I am using this TV primarily to watch movies, and I am happy with it. As with all TVs in this price range, it has motion artifacts, but not enough to be a turn-off. I have seen it on some of the action sequences when playing 4K Blu-rays. When watching several episodes of "Hanna" on Prime, I didn't notice any. Color gradient is quite good. This TV has all the inputs and outputs you would need. I am using the line output to go to a Yamaha amplifier and a pair of loudspeakers, so I don't use the TV speakers much. I have tried them, and they don't sound bad. As to reliability, only time will tell. I bought an inexpensive TCL 32" and within a year it developed issues. I hope this one lasts a lot longer. If you are looking for a 55" TV and you don't have a bottomless ATM at your disposal, I think this TV will do quite nicely for you, especially if you have dumped cable.

    A Most Excellent TV

Finally!!!! I Finally found the right TV!!! I sold my Hisense 50H6C (a rare gem) to upgrade to a 55. It had an excellent PQ. I'm sorry to say I had to go through 2 TVs from Walmart and 2 other TVs from Best Buy to get a 55in that equaled the same PQ of the Hisense. A JVC that was utter garbage, the Insignia fire TV that had pixelation in dark scenes, a Hisense R series who's PQ was blurry, and a TCL 4 series that had good colors but all kinds of backlight bleed. I was going to settle for the TCL until I saw this on sale on a deal of the day. I'm so glad I did. What I liked about my old 50in Hisense aside from it's excellent PQ was it had a great motion smoothing feature. It made the picture pop out and look like you were right there. On Roku TVs it's called action smoothing. Not many Roku TVs have it. The TCL and Hisense use clear motion index and motion rate 120 respectively. And you have no control over it. Both do a terrible job. But this Sharp let's you turn it off or settings of low medium and high. Some people call it the soap opera effect. You may or may not be a fan of it but it is a must have for me. I generally have it on the low setting for watching TV. It looks fabulous to me. I turn it off for movies but sometimes I leave it on. Heck with Tom Cruise. After going through 4 TVs I was literally praying that this would be a decent TV before turning it on. I have to tell you, the Picture Quality is awesome. It's nice and bright, the colors are good. The roku interface is faster than the TCL or the Hisense R series. No backlight bleed. This TV easily outperforms the other 4. Anyway I'm so happy now after 6 weeks of trying to find the right TV. Sorry to Best buy for having to return two TVs but you know what? It's your own fault you have so many TV returns. How are we supposed to intelligently shop for TVs when we can't even go into the TV and look at it's menu system or it's features. All we have to go by is the generic crapola you run on TVs in a lightly lit store. Would you buy a car without taking it for a drive? Change your way of selling TVs and it will lower returns and make you more profit.

Good choice for budget friendly 4k Smart TV

Our trusty nearly 10 year old Dynex 55" finally gave out on us, leading me to search for a budget friendly replacement. Found this on sale with decent specifications and a great price. It's been hooked up for about a week now and overall I am happy with the purchase so far. Nice picture with both 1080p and 2160p content. Internal sound is not great, but it's set up with Yamaha receiver in 7.2 so that is not a concern for our use. While we are cord-cutters and use Roku devices on all our other TVs (4), this is my first experience with integrated Roku that essentially serves as the operation platform for functions (even the remote is a Roku remote, with a few additional buttons for On/Off, Volume, Menu, etc). There are definitely pros and cons to the extensive Roku integration. From a simplicity perspective (especially for those familiar with Rokus), it's great if your primary uses for the TV will be streaming from apps such as Netflix, Hulu, Sling, etc. Even with basic external sound such as a sound bar, easy connection via optical cable and you are good to go. There is a drawback to this set up if you use a more advanced A/V receiver for surround sound. As the streaming content is derived internally from Roku, you are limited to Audio Out (Opt/Coax) to your receiver, rendering on screen receiver menus for modifying settings useless. Not a deal breaker as you can still run other devices (i.e. 4k BluRay) through the receiver then out the TV for menu intensive receiver set up, but not the most user friendly. Also as info, this TV is "HDR Compatible", but not UHD Premium certified to produce "true" HDR formats such as HDR10 or Dolby Vision. However, TVs achieving that certification will cost more than this unit. (If you are interested in higher performance HDR, read up on UHD Premium certification) Overall, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a budget 4k smart TV as this would suit the needs of the majority of consumers. If you are looking for a TV that will be more integrated into a higher end Home Theater, you probably shouldn't be looking at TVs in this price range.

    Loving this tv, so far...

I actually got this tv on the rebound. On Cyber Monday I purchased the 50 inch 4k Toshiba with built in Chromecast-- what a complete let down. The picture quality on the Toshiba was terrible! After four days of trying to tweak the settings and hoping the adjustments would somehow fix the cloudy/blurry/oddly colored picture, I gave up. I never even got around to trying out the Chromecast. I had been looking at some of the customer reviews and someone wrote that he returned his Toshiba and replaced it with the Sharp 50 inch 4k Roku tv. He seemed to be very happy with the Sharp, so I figured I would give it a try-- I am soooo glad I did. I returned the Toshiba and purchased the Sharp at the same store visit. Set up was a breeze, but took some time (lots of program loading). I am not a savvy tech person by any means, but I was able to install the Roku and get the tv up and running by myself. The picture on this tv is wonderful-- crisp, clear and vibrant, which is exactly what I was looking for. Although I must admit the sound on the Toshiba was slightly better, I still say the Sharp puts rings overall around the Toshiba, and maybe one day, I'll consider buying a sound bar. Again, I cannot stress enough the disparity in the picture quality between the two tv's. So far I've used Amazon Prime twice. With one of the movies, my new Sharp froze before it even finished with the opening credits-- the second movie was flawless. I highly recommend this tv. I've noticed that some reviewers have complained about the remote, but honestly, I have had no problems with it. It looks great in my bedroom, and I couldn't be happier with this purchase. I paid $369.99 for this set ( the original price was $499.99). The Toshiba was $299.99, but the extra $70.00 I spent on the Sharp was well worth it as far as I'm concerned. If you are looking for a great tv with cool features and a beautiful picture, and you don't want the high price tag that Samsung and the other name brands offer, I would suggest you give this tv a try.

DISCLAIMER: I bought this TV to replace a 42" 720 Plasma TV Picture: The first thing I noticed is that the picture looks almost 3D. It is that good. This may be because I was used to lower resolution TV but the difference is that stark. We tried this on several channels, the DVR, DVD and several apps, all had great picture quality. Sound: The sound is very adjustable. It almost sounded echoey (if that is a word). You can adjust the sound for music, speech and a variety of settings. There were big differences between these settings and I really could not decide what I liked. I am sure I will get used to one setting and call it a day. Ports: Plenty of these and easily configured. Even though you can place custom names to the port devices, my only suggestion would be that they add a generic device which covers devices such as Apple TV, Chromecast or Firestick. Not a biggie. Settings: You can have different sound and display settings depending on the port or app you currently are connected to. This allows customization that stays with the particular device or app being used. Remote: I hear complaints about the remote but I actually liked it a lot. It is very simple and the TV operating system works very well with it. Navigating through Netflix on the TV was no different then navigating through Netflix on an iPad. Once you realize how to get around, it is pretty intuitive and quick. Logging into apps is long as to be expected due to typing but it is only a one time deal. Apps: There are a ton of them. Initial setup kind of ignores the obvious ones but it is simple to go back and load these apps into the TV. For example, I had to go back and install YouTube which I would consider a default app. After all, it is on the box cover. Overall: I rate this TV pretty well. It is my first smart 4K TV and I would recommend it to anyone. The fact that it was only $375 makes it all that much better.

In search of a gaming TV for my room, I discovered this Sharp that seemed "too good to be true". Extensive research over the holidays to find the perfect TV amounted to this find. I needed one with the old AV ports (yellow, red and white cable ports for old game consoles), an audio jack to plug in a speaker that only takes Bluetooth or auxiliary connections, and the most important aspect: minimal or no input lag when playing games. I'm happy to say this TV, while unbelievable at first, ticks all the boxes and so much more! The picture quality is brilliant, though I've yet to watch any movies to take advantage of the 4K attributes it boasts. New games look great on this TV, though not so much for older consoles, but that's to be expected with AV cords in a new TV. Sound is perfectly fine, but soundbars or external speakers are always superior. As the TV also comes with Roku, and by extension Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc., this added icing on the cake that is this gorgeous TV! Input lag is present AT FIRST, but switching the TV to Game Mode mostly eliminates the problem. I think there is still the slightest bit of input lag present, (maybe 20-30 ms or so), but unless you demand absolute instantaneous reactions with the TV, this will suffice for any competitive game on home consoles. If you're playing mostly casual games, this won't be an issue at all, although I cannot vouch for PC gaming on this TV. In general, input lag is pretty much nonexistent as long as the TV is in Game Mode. The stands that accompany the set are very high quality and surprisingly sturdy! We live in an earthquake-prone part of California so this is definitely reassuring! Everything about this TV screams perfection for me, and it most likely will for you too! I recommend for those in search of a gaming TV on a tighter budget.

Good value, but Roku is finicky

I've had this TV for only one day, but I thought I'd go ahead and post some initial impressions. The setup was very easy. You'll likely need some help lifting it from the box, but from unboxing to watching TV may have taken me 15 minutes tops. Once the unit is powered up, it leads you through a setup that isn't all that different from setting up a new smart phone. If you already have a Roku account you'll be asked to login to it and the primary menu screen will populate with the Roku apps you've already been using. The Roku that is built into the TV seems to be a bit slower than the stand alone Roku box I had previously. Not sure if it's still acclimating itself or if it's just got less powerful hardware. This morning it took 2-3 minutes before I could watch sling TV because it was populating the channel listings. Last night I was streaming an on demand show and it "froze" several times during commercials. The stand alone box rarely had that problem. The picture quality is good, sound quality too. If you're really picky about the sound you may want an audio system to accompany this TV. I like the remote control. It's small, simple, and easy to use. Personally, I also love that I don't have a Roku sitting next to the TV anymore. The space around the TV is clean and cord free. There wasn't a manual with the TV, just a "quick start" guide. This was adequate for setup, but I'm having to figure out how to fine tune some of the settings on my own. I'm sure there's a book online, but I'd prefer a print copy. So far, I'd have no problem recommending this TV. It's not a top of the line machine, but for the money I would say it is a good value.

This is a great TV for the price. The TV itself has an excellent, vivid picture when calibrated correctly, and the speakers are excellent (if not using the built-in Roku). The main menu is nice as well. It allows you to customize your connected device inputs, setup a screensaver, access Roku channels, etc. It's got a built in Roku (which is why I bought this model), but Roku built in a volume dampener to try and sell their new wireless speakers, which I find criminal. So if you watch anything using Roku, the sound is horrible. You have to turn it up to near max just to hear it. If I use my Fire TV Cube, My DVD Player, or my HTPC, then the sound is loud and crystal clear, so that lets me know that it's the Roku, not the TV itself. That's pretty scummy if you ask me, and that's why I only gave it three stars. The main cons are the Roku sound quality and the lack of options. There's no component video or DVI inputs, the video and sound settings are minimal, and the controller is just the basic Roku controller w/o the mic or headphone jack. If it wasn't for the Roku sound issues, I would probably rate this a 5-Star TV, even despite the lack of options. If you're looking for a good TV for a HTPC, then this Sharp is extremely hard to beat for the size versus price (I paid $400 on sale).

    Good tv, good price

After a lot of research and on a budget, I bought this tv after comparing them in the store. We primarily use our TV for streaming, cable TV and Blu-rays. The picture is really good for the price point. There is a little motion blur on high action shots, but it isn't extremely bad. The blacks aren't pitch black, but pretty good and I haven't noticed any of the clouding in especially dark scenes that I got on my older 1080 tv. All of the picture presets seemed a little off on color, but a minimum of tweaking gets you a very natural color scale. I personally like the Roku platform and it seems to be really well integrated into this tv. The only problem I've had with this aspect of the tv is once when I went into Netflix, it logged in fine, but would not show any available titles. I had to do a soft reset from the settings menu. This has only happened once in the month I've had the tv, so I don't consider it a major flaw. It seems it was just a one time computer hiccup. The only other thing I think worth mentioning is about the remote. The volume and mute buttons are on the side of the remote and when picking up the remote I inadvertantly press one of those buttons almost every time. It doesn't affect me too much since I use a surround sound from the optical audio out, but it is kind of annoying. This is probably about as much tv as you can get for under $500. Very happy with my purchase.

I purchased this TV NOV 25 2017. Dec 19 2018, screen flickered then went black. 3 weeks outside of warranty and Sharp refused to do anything about it, just stated that it was outside of warranty and policy blah blah blah... I personally expect more than a year's worth of service from a television. While it was working, I I found the picture to be adequate but not as sharp as my other flat screen smart tv. The sound quality is extremely poor and I found that I needed to purchase a sound bar to hear the unit in s average sized bedroom. I fully understand that flat screen's weak point is speaker size but this is really sub-standard. If Sharp had stood behind their product and offered some assistance other than "taking the unit to a third party technician for repair" I likely would have been satisfied. Poor product reliability and poor manufacturer backing. As I said in the beginning, do not waste your money, spend the extra and purchase a better brand.

I purchased this TV during Black Friday last November from another store for $295. Now I understand why it was priced so low. For a 4K TV it has only so-so picture quality, even on 4K content. It is constantly freezing up and having to either manually restart it or most of the time, pulling the plug out for 10 or more seconds and then plugging it back in. I made the mistake of selling my Vizio 55 within a day or so after buying this one (the only difference being the Vizio wasn't 4K, but it was a smart tv). And as far as the "Smart TV" portion goes, I have a Roku stick plugged in the side of the TV and I use it instead of the TV's smart function. In fact, I've unplugged the TV from the internet just to save bandwidth because I don't use any of the "smart" functions on it. In my opinion, don't waste your time or money on this, unless they have upgraded their quality since last November. And it is definitely not worth over $500 for. I don't think it was worth the $295 I paid for it. I think from now on I will stick with Vizio or Panasonic.

Good for the money but has audio problems

    Posted
    Saltfarmer

Setup was easy. The picture is good. The Roku function is fast and has a lot of features. The main problem we have had is with the audio. We are running it with only DishTV on the antenna connection. The problem is that the audio only worked for Dish, Netflix, and Youtube. When I selected any streaming channels then the audio would go away. When I returned to Dish it would still not have audio. I would have to power down and start over. I finally found a setting in SETUP that allowed me to watch streaming like ROKU with audio but it still goes away once in awhile. I will turn it on and not have audio on dish (antenna) so I go to netflix and have audio so I go back to Dish and then the audio works. There is also a problem with the volume between the different thing I watch. The Roku movies can be so low that I turn it up to 100 and it is not loud. I hope to get some fix from support for this. Right now these problems are a real pain. I would not buy another one at this time.

This is a very good TV for streaming. HD is great even when viewing even with 720 picture quality. It's great for gaming, too. The biggest drawback is some media even on the highest level can be practically inaudible. This doesn't happen extremely often, but enough to be a nuisance. One extra nice feature is that the Roku app can be downloaded on any android device (not sure about Ios) and you can use that as a remote and use your headphones for private listening if you want to watch without disturbing others. One other thing of note is if you watch broadcast TV that there's no number keys. I don't so it has no effect in my viewing, but I can see that as a hindrance to those who want to switch channels regularly. You might want to get a universal remote if that's the case. It was very reasonably priced at $420 when we purchased which was a very good deal for 55" 4K (UHD) Roku TV. I didn't want a smart TV as they seem to have issues with streaming slowing down or audio not matching the video, but I felt so confident with Roku that this was the only smart TV I was willing to buy. So, overall this was a very good deal and fits our needs almost perfectly.

This was the third exchanged TV, and it has the same problem as the previous one, but even worse: after a just few minutes of watching (the previous one last about an hour or so), then switching from one streaming source to another, it will just lost sync, that is, the picture is completely out of sync. Also, this set has a big bright spot (cloud) in the middle lower part of the TV when viewing dark scenes (the previous one has dead pixels and the first one has stuck pixels). So, it looks like this Sharp brand TV just has very low quality. Even the Best Buy sales people wouldn't recommend it. Any way, this one is returning to Best Buy. And I don't know if I'll want another Sharp TV or not, after having bad luck three times.

We bought two of these TV's on the Black Friday special. When we got them home and set up we tried to disable the "soap-opera" effect that makes the picture look funny, but had no luck locating an in-depth picture menu. We even tried from the Roku app with no luck. After many google searches, I came across the manual from another Sharp Roku TV that explained how to get to the in-depth picture menu. 1) Watch or stream something on the TV. 2) When the item is playing, click the * button on the Roku TV remote. 3) An advanced picture menu will pop out on the left side on the screen. Use the arrows to scroll to Advanced Picture Settings. 4) In the Advanced Picture Settings, scroll down to Action Smoothing and turn the Action Smoothing OFF Now that the action smoothing is off, the TV is great!

This TV exceeds my expections. The picture quality is excellent and impressive. The set up was quick and easy. Netflix, Showtime, Vudu, film quality is amazing. There are so many movies to watch with ROKU. VUdu has some that are free. Others you have to have a subscription to their service. If you have a receiver like a Dish or Direct TV, in order to see the true quality you have to upgrade to a HD receiver which is an additional $10 in your cable or satellite bill. This is my second Sharp TV. The first one I got I had to return because it emitted this chemical burning smell that did not go away. The second one had it but only 30%. I left the TV on for 4 days to help burn the emitting gas. It helped. Can slightly still smell it, so,I am hoping it will go away. The remote is super nice with a great feel and volume and mute buttons are on the side of remote which is easy to locate. Great TV. You will be pleased with this 55" Sharp TV. A lot of the newer TV's emit a smell. You do your research on models and read reviews on TV's emitting odor and burning smell.

Upon setting the TV up, with 5 minutes, I ended up noticing a vertical row of pixels not working. I opened a chat with Best Buy because it was after hours & they said since I bought it in the store I would need to bring it back there. Not ideal to lug around a 55" TV. Also, since it was on special pricing, they're now sold out and one option is to have them repair the TV. I'm not sure I want to fix a TV that is failing & only a couple days old. Not feeling comfortable relying on the rest of the unit. I am now looking into other options/models/manufacture that will most likely cost more. It was a great value for the price I paid & I do like the look and functions of the TV. The picture is super clear and is much better than the TV that it is replacing. Just feeling disappointed that the TV I got was not working properly out of the box & not being able to return it for the same model has me looking in another direction.

It's replaced my LG Plasma tv and this picture quality with my Dish Satelite isn't the best. It's fine and could be due to my Dish box. However, compared to my old plasma and 2 year old Samsung Curve, the picture quality is not as great. If you have Dish, the picture on the screen doesn't use up the entire screen. It bothered me that this was how it appeared when I set it up so I had to change the settings to zoom/fit the screen. With this or any other setting, the picture quality is just okay. You wouldn't notice it unless you compare it with other tvs. My Samsung Curve has about the same specs- a 4k UHD and around the same price point. If I were to buy a tv, I would have gone with another Samsung. The great features about this tv is the price for the size of the tv, the built in Roku is great. I have more options with this built in feature.

I purchased this TV about 10 days ago and I am returning it today because although it looks pretty good if you're sitting right across from it as soon as you start moving to the sides and your view is from an angle the TV starts looking like a white cloud is washed across the entire screen and this is pretty bad because you don't only watch TV sitting right across from it, sometimes you move and when you do the angle view is horrible. I have pretty good knowledge about TV settings and I went trough every single one more than once and try to see if there was a setting that could make it look better but to no avail. My 7 year old TV that just died looked perfect and crisp from every angle and that is a 7 year old TV not a brand new LED so I am pretty disappointed and I'm gonna give another brand a try.
