Great Picture-No Frills

I have had this tv for a little over a week. After calibrating the picture settings, I must say I am impressed with the picture both on Uverse and Blueray, especially for a TV this large. I was looking for a 65-70 inch TV in this price range and was not concerned with having smart features or 3D. I also considered the Vizio 70 and a Samsung 65.
I was able to view the Vizio on display at a Best Buy store. I was a little disappointed that the Vizio picture seemed to be a bit washed out. After researching the Samsung, I found that it only has 2 HDMI inputs.
This Sharp was not on display at any stores yet, but I decided to take a chance on it as the specs and price were in line with what I was looking for. I am happy with my purchase. I bought a top of the line Samsung 46 in 2007 and have always been impressed with the contrast ratio and clarity of its picture. I anticipated that a TV this much larger would surely not have as clear of a picture as my 46 inch. I was wrong. I do not see any loss in clarity. If anything it seems a little better. It doesn't have the advanced picture settings the Samsung does, but doesn't seem to need them. I believe the picture is better than the older model Sharp 70 inch non-3D that was on display at the store.
One thing to note, depending on your home theater setup: This tv does not pass HDMI sound to the optical output (PCM stereo or Dolby 5.1). Not a big deal if you don't use your TV to switch audio sources. Also, the built in speakers are pretty weak sounding for a TV this large. Again, may not be a big deal if you normally use a sound system.
Pluses: great picture quality for the size and price, number of HD inputs, thin profile
Negatives: sound quality of built in speakers, no HDMI audio is passed to optical output

Just Being Honest and Objective

I am going to be honest and objective about this television and in no way allow my negative customer service experience upon returning said tv interfere with my analysis of it (even though I will share that experience as well). I bought this television from the McDonough, GA store (#668) on 10-27-13. I specifically asked the associate if there was a difference between the picture quality between this tv and the 70” 650U model. He replied “no difference in picture quality, the 650 just adds smart features and has better sound.” Since I did not care about either one of those features, I purchased the 550U. Upon getting it home, I realized that this tv has absolutely NO advanced picture adjustments. It only has your standard brightness, contrast, sharpness… and also learned that the 650U (thanks to Cnet) DOES have all of the necessary adjustment capabilities that one would need for proper calibration (10 point white scale, color management system…). I was not angry or upset with the associate but rather upset with myself for not doing more research on my own.
As far as the tv goes, I put it in my living room which is exactly 20’x20’, with my couch on one end and the tv on the other. I measured my viewing distance from my couch to the screen and it was about 17 ft. The reason why I share this is because the picture quality may be better if you’re sitting further away than that (the picture looked rather good while standing in my hallway, which is an additional 4-5 feet away, but who wants to do that?). Bottom line, this thing is huge, with a mediocre picture, period. If you simply want a giant tv but don’t want a great picture, then get this tv. It suffered from incorrect color/skin tones, horrible banding (even on slow panning scenes like HGTV in a kitchen setting), and worst of all, the dreaded DSE or “dirty screen effect.” I played with the rather skimpy picture controls for about 10 days and could never get it to look acceptable. The deal-breaker for me was how blu rays looked. I tried several and even my brother said that it looked like a standard dvd.
So I decided to return the television. I found another tv that I really wanted but it only showed in stock at the Dunwoody, GA store (#503). On the day prior to me packing this beast up and hauling it away, I called store # 503 and asked them if I could return the tv there even though I purchased it at the McDonough store. Binky told me that I absolutely could, just bring my receipt and everything that it came with. So we packed the tv up and drove over an hour to the store only to have Keena, the manager, refuse to accept the television because she claimed that the screws that affix the tv to the stand were missing (I never even removed the packaging from any components of the stand because I never used it, Keena actually unpackaged the stand). I was pretty upset to say the least, considering that 2-3 hours of my Saturday were down the drain. She then walked off without attempting to help me find the television that I wanted, or make arrangements to get my 70” brought back to me since two guys carried it all the way to the back of the store. The store’s general manager, Ramone, called me the next day to try and smooth things over but the vibe I got from him was “I am sorry but that’s just the way it is sometimes.” He really didn’t act like he cared all that much. Ultimately, the store near my house, Turner Hill (#389), took the tv back without question. Thomas, Paul, and a young African American girl at the service counter could not have been nicer and more understanding.
It’s baffling to me how a business would refuse to take one of their products back when the customer standing before them is there to spend even more money on a more expensive product. As nice as the associates were at store #389, they did not have anything in stock so I ended up finding a really nice Sharp 8 series 240hz 3d tv at Bj’s Wholesale club for a really great price. So much for premier silver elite plus.

It is a lot bigger once you have it in your home!!! It's been 3 weeks now and I still can't get over the massive size of it!! I researched this TV and new what I was getting. It's not 3D. No wifi. No widgets, gadgets, apps or anything. Just a massive tv with a great picture. I did find something online to help me tweek the picture.
I have a PS3 for online stuff (netflix, youtube, etc.)
I have a sony sound bar. (Never used the TV volume)
And the picture is AWESOME!!!!
So if your bluray player has apps, or you have apple tv or Roku than you don't need a TV with extras. If your getting a TV this big you probably have some sort of sound system. If you don't care about 3D well this TV is for you. If your on a budget and want size get the tv and you'll be happy!
Seriously, If I had $5000-$10,000 just for a TV I would not have bought this. But for $1799 It's AWESOME!!!!!

This is a great TV I'd you want a huge screen for a low price. It doesn't have ARC on any of its HDMI Ports which was a but disappointing, but otherwise I have no complaints. I use a sound bar with the TV so I can't comment about sound quality.

Just what I am looking for, a large TV that's easy to operate. I don't need 3D because it just gives me headache, I don't need smart TV because my blue ray player does that. Picture quality is good and I hooked it up with our yamaha 5 ch receiver for great audio. This TV is good for the price I paid and the brand is reliable.

This TV is a great value. I have this hooked up to a Denon 3313 AVR and a PS3, so I didn't need any of the apps or extras that come with the more expensive models. If you're looking for a large screen with a clear picture, you can't go wrong with this one.

For the price, this one can't be beat. Does everything it says it does. Great image, and several user adjustable settings. Has fewer inputs than some other flat panels this size but the contrast is amazing and can't really ask for more at this price!

We got this tv as a replacement tv. We originally had the Sharp 60 inch with wireless Internet capability. I honestly liked that tv better because it had better picture quality. This tv has a good picture as well, but it's not as good as my previous one. Overall, I am pleased with the tv.

This TV is a great combination of huge size, bright picture, and impressive clarity. It doesn't have all the ridiculous Smart TV features that I don't care about and just add cost & complexity. I highly recommend this TV.

Purchased this 70" flat screen to replace large 60" Sony Grand Wega. Doesn't take up as much room as the old Sony even though the screen is larger. Pricing was as much a decision maker as the features.

Initially I planned to buy the Vizio 70", got to the store and salesman pointed out the sturdier base in the sharpe, big selling point because we have a toddler that likes to push on everything!

This TV has a great picture and great sound. I was afraid I wouldn't like it since the price was so low but I figured I would give it a shot. I'm glad I did! Oh and I really didn't mind that it wasn't a smart tv since I use my Apple TV.

We were very pleased with the picture, especially for the large size of the set. It replaced a 65" projection TV, and it far surpassed the picture quality of the projection set.
