The BBC characters from the popular series are back in London past to do battle with crime of the day! Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud of this faithful telling of his classic sleuth and sidekick!

This standalone episode bridges seasons 3 & 4 and time jumps between the original Sherlock Holmes period and the modern incarnation.

The first thing that must be said is that The Abominable Bride should not be your introduction to Gatiss' and Moffat's Sherlock. This episode fits squarely in the middle of this show's run. The draw of this is that it provides a fun new take on well established characters. We get to see Molly Hooper as male Dr. Hooper, a morbidly obese Mycroft, and Mrs. Hudson complain about her characterization in Watson's novelization of Sherlock's adventures. We also get to see some classic Sherlock scenes play out in 19th century England. While not a whole lot can be said about how the story of Sherlock is advanced by The Abominable Bride, it does provide a bridge between series 3 and 4. All in all, this is a must have to complete your Sherlock collection, but it is passable if you are only a casual fan.

they turn back the clock and almost redifine him.. The asset Moffat & Gattis created in the present day BBC Sherlock Holmes stories is they make him approachable to todays generation.. Not just the setting/todays time period, but the story telling, whipcrack dialogue and camera 'tricks' they utilize to show how Sherlock 'works'.. They then took the present day tim period crutch away and proved they could make it work in Victorion England. With the added swere of making it a natural bridge with Moriarity between Season 3 7 the (when?!?!) Season 4..

The Sherlock series is always well made however I found this installment confusing. I couldn't tell what was real and what was imagined. It really seemed to focus more on the drug addiction of Sherlock than anything else. And the "whodunnit" reveal was anticlimactic. The whole episode just wasn't very believable. In the end I found myself messaging a friend who had seen it to find out "what really happened." I give it relatively high marks for production value (and because it was cool to imagine our modern day Holmes and Watson in the 19th Century) but I reserve a star because it was so convoluted. And will someone please tell me, is Moriarty alive or dead?

A very classy special in lieu of series 4 from the BBC production of Sherlock! Cumberbatch is a remarkable actor who can carry Sherlock to new heights. And in this special we are transported back to the year 1895. See that analytical mind work overtime with just 19th Century tools to help solve the case. Freeman is in fine shape as the ever-dependable Watson. Both actors give this series the life it craves which makes it interesting and a challenge to the audience's minds. As always, Mark Gatiss & crew behind the scenes give the series its classic touch! Excellent!

This is a special, not an episode of the series...sort of.
It takes place after seasons (series) 1 - 3 of BBC's Sherlock and pays off for fans of the series with lots of nods and references, etc. You can watch it without having seen the show, but you'll lose a lot and miss a majority of what makes it entertaining. It isn't strictly necessary to see The Abominable Bride to watch season (series) 4, but there is one development (in AB) that you will have missed...but you don't need AB to understand it in the show.
All that said, if you're watching Sherlock, you're going to watch this. It's fun. It does take place in a alternate reality (characters are a bit different and in a different time period).

I'll start by saying this: if you have not seen Seasons 1-3 of Sherlock already, do not watch this movie. It ties directly into the show and would spoil the surprises of all three seasons. If you have watched all three seasons, this is an excellent way to ease your suffering in the long wait before season 4. The time period is a welcome change for the show and it's fun to see our favorite characters in that era. All the acting is top notch (as usual) and the mystery involved is quite enjoyably dark. Definitely a must watch!

I'm a big Sherlock fan (and Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch) and as soon as I heard they released a special "holiday edition" episode of Sherlock I had to get ahold of this for my DVD collection, and to just watch in general. The only bad thing about this is the price for the DVD is pretty high for just one episode (granted each episode is about an an hour and a half). Other than that it's great :)

Sherlock:The Abominable Bride is excellent. Its excellence is due to the outstanding performances of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Watson. What also makes this episode of the BBC/PBS Sherlock series so intriguing is that Sherlock and Watson travel back in time to -1895 Victorian England to solve the mystery. Or do they? Jeremy Brett was considered by many PBS fans to be the premier Sherlock Holmes but in my opinion Benedict Cumberbatch deserves equal accolades .

I'm a big fan of the British TV Show "Sherlock". This particular DVD contains all the best attributes of the show. Intelligent - exciting - entertaining. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are exceptional in this TV Special. This particular show takes place in the 19th century as opposed to their previous adaptions and the cast is joined by Martin Freeman's real life wife Amanda Abbington which is a treat for all Martin Freeman fans. I highly recommend this to any Sherlock fan.

Mark Gatiss had wanted to experiment with taking his version of Sherlock back to its 19th century roots. This one-off show allows him to do that, yet the story is done in such a way that it also ties in closely with the overall story arc presented in the first three seasons of the show. I won't spoil how this is done, if you haven't seen it yet. Suffice it to say that everything you love about Sherlock is still there in this episode, and it gives you a unique view as well.

I didnt know what to expect from this movie. Some places list this as a movie or short series. I dont know if there will be more. But for those who watch the Sherlock English series, I think this is a great tidbit! I was confused at what was happening, mostly cuz I couldnt remember the show too well. But eventually I caught on. I think diehards would get it pretty quickly. It wasnt what I'd expected this series to turn to. But I appreciated this chance of more Sherlock!!

At first I thought it would be like the TV version but suddenly I realized it has a different agenda and it was totally different. I just fell into a relaxed mode and started to absorb all of the first plot. Scene after scene started to play out and the more I was interested. It held all of my attention. I had heard that some movies tend to copy and this wasn't true about this one. I loved the whole movie. It was fantastic.

Total impulse buy. I saw it at the store and thought, heck yes. So happy I got it. It's just like one of the Sherlock episodes. It has twists and turns and it's well written. If you like the series, you'll love this movie. And Eggs Benedict does an awesome job reprising his role for Victorian England.

If you are a fan of the BBC show Sherlock, this is a must-have. This special continues the story of the main series in lieu of any upcoming seasons that look to be years away still. The special itself picks up where the last episode of the series left off and also gives a trip down memory lane to classic Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes in Victorian era England.

I've had a thing for Sherlock since I was a kid and Robert Downey Jr. had become my favorite until Benedict Cumberbatch. I think that entire cast is wonderful and how they have converted the stories to modern times is very clever. This installment switches between the past and present and can seem a bit confusing. I also feel it doesn't work well as a stand-alone but as part of the series. That being said, I liked this and look forward to more from this series.

The performances, dialogue, scenery are all top notch and up to the usual high standards of the show. The plot and script I thought were a bit disappointing. If you have never seen the show this is NOT the episode to start with as about half way through you'll be jarred right out of the moment. Fans were waiting for that tie in to season 3's finale and for me anyway was not surprised by the sudden switch. A good episode for those who've been watching all along.
