Arguably the best Godzilla film thus far!

Arguably the best Godzilla film thus far! The cinematography puts the viewer on the ground to experience the terrifying arrival of the enormous creature, and shows the comedic contrast of how inefficient government bureaucracies respond. Shin Godzilla (2016) pays homage to some of the classic Toho films, including themes in the musical score. The evolution of the creature, the destructive action sequences, and the destructive responses, are all very well rendered. I rate this five stars!

This Blu-Ray is pretty bare bones in regards to Bonus Features, but the video presentation is excellent. The fob is interested in 2.1 channel audio, which is a bit disappointing, but the I believe the film was originally done this way. It still sounds great! The alternate audio tracks and language subtitles give you some options for how you wish to watch. Overall, a good presentation.
The film itself is a flawed but bold and mostly fantastic update of the Godzilla origin story, and is at times chilling. Pick this one up!

Really like this "origin" story take on present day Godzilla. Lots of political handwringing about what to do with what just came out of Tokyo Bay seems like exactly how it would play out.
Love the transformations Godzilla goes through and IMO the scariest version of him ever put on film. This is NOT your 70s "I'm a friend to mankind!" version.

How can you possibly make Godzilla scarier? I don;t know but these guys did it. Bringing Godzilla into the tweet first century the new Godzilla is more powerful a lot uglier and is threat to all of humanity. Some of the post nuances maybe lost on American audiences but the filmmakers put some low key social political commentary inside the film about the current state of affairs inside Japan. It plays in the background as the new Godzilla rampages across Tokyo. Highly recommend.

Shin Godzilla is not your typical Godzilla movie. It is more of a reality show that hones in on a crisis. It shows the lack of a clear plan in case of crisis - in this case an earthquake caused by Godzilla. The viewer sees the lack of cohesion and the hesitation that people in power can have in a time of crisis.
It's not for everyone. It's sophisticated and in many instances hard to follow if you do not stay focused on the various characters. However, it gives the viewer an idea of what was going on in Japan after Fukushima.

The True Godzilla

Hideaki Anno is a master at Anime and Cinema. This version of Godzilla is the true version, it shows the evolution of Godzilla and how humans interact with it. Unlike American versions that focus on big-name actors to pull people in, the film focuses on Godzilla, and how it came to be.
If you want to see the best version, watch it in Japanese with English subtitles; the English dub is iffy.
We need to leave the Godzilla films to the Japanese, we (Americans) suck at making those films.

It is a fun Godzilla movie. They try to make some logical attack plans to fight Godzilla. But they portray Godzilla as having some way over the top abilities/strengths and the sum total of the Japanese military is sill small. (A few tanks and hardly and planes or soldiers etc). I enjoyed it and it is a must have for all Godzilla fans.

He's a mean green killing machine back from a 12 year vacation is the original TOHO monster GODZILLA!!
He looks outstanding in all his blu-ray glory and who cares if it's subtitled? It's GODZILLA we care about and the story surrounding him is pretty good! As much as I'm excited over the new reboot by Legend films, I miss Toho's Godzilla. I hope that this is the beginning of a new series of G films. The Combo is the best way to go here so get it while you can! 5 Stars!!

This is a great Godzilla movie if you are a longtime fan of the series. Hideaki Anno was a great choice for this film and his take on ther series was entertaining. However, you get Evangelion vibes from the music and the heavy dialogue sequences, not a bad thing really. When you look at his previous work [director and writer] you will understand. Overall a great Godzilla movie, hopefully this will bring more new and exciting Japanese Godzilla movies.

Shin Godzilla is arguably the most beautiful movie in the franchise. The storytelling is superb and the director does a magnificent job at aiming his critiques of issues within Japan. Outside of that, there are many scenes where you can feel the direness of the situation faced by Japan as they confront Godzilla.

As a big time Godzilla fan, I enjoyed watching this movie. There's is a little too much talking in this movie and not enough monster action. However, when we do see Godzilla, it's pretty awesome. The special features are limited. I hoped to see some great behind the scenes insight and interviews, but there's not a lot here. It's great that this comes with a digital copy.

This is not your traditional godzilla it's still an Amazing version of godzilla though. It definitely takes a lot of stuff from the original godzillas. I would highly recommend as a must watch monster movie. Also you don't need to have seen any godzilla to understand this movie you learn a lot of stuff as the people in the movie do.

A really great, thoughtful next installment to the long-running Godzilla series. The dub is pretty laughable (we couldn't make it past the first few minutes), so we always watch this with subtitles. This movie provides some interesting motivation to the Godzilla designs and is an interesting commentary on the state of Japanese bureaucracy. Definitely worth watching. The BluRay/DVD version is as expected.

Reviewing the two reviews one like it the other didn’t. I ponder whether to get this or not. Brought it and got the blu-ray and dvd disc with it also the digital copy of both Japanese & English version for my digital library. This offers Godzilla in 4 stages evolving, there is no guy in a rubber suit. I enjoyed this movie tremously & glad I made this purchase. It’s gonna be interesting where TOHO takes him.

The movie is not bad after all. Keep in mind this goes back to the original Godzillas. So the story lacks a bit but when there's action, there's plenty. I personally did not like a certain scene when Godzilla walks on all fours. It looked too fake for my taste but then again it was only like a 3 second shot. This wouild be more of a movie for die hard fans.

As much a commentary on Japanese political bureaucracy as a monster movie, Shin Godzilla is an excellent, modern addition to the Godzilla canon. Even my wife who refers to the Big G as the "King of the sissy monsters" liked this one. I recommend watching in English the first time through—there are simply too many titles to read to really keep up.

Crisp clean picture. The most realistic Godzilla movie ever. No more dancing on asteroids or having a talk with Mothra and Rodan. Shin Godzilla treats it's subject matter with gritty realism as the movie treats a giant monster attack like a real world natural disaster.

Excellent movie, much more my speed than all of the American Godzilla and King Kong stuff recently. If you enjoyed Arrival instead of Pacific Rim, then this is the Godzilla movie you want! Just disappointing that this addition doesn't come with a digital copy.
