Best LED LCD HDTV of 2013!

I did quite a bit of research because I wanted to buy the best LED LCD HDTV available in 2013 and all reviews pointed to this TV. The picture is amazing, HD movies and games look great. The sound is also great but I am using a soundbar because I wanted an even better sound than the TV has. As far as the internet features they are pretty decent: Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc. However, what is missing is HBO Go. Despite this I am very happy with the TV, it is definitely the best TV you can buy in 2013.

Picture Quality: If you read the reviews on CNET and other TV review sites, you will find their assessments to be accurate. The pic quality out of the box was already very good. The black levels are indeed very close to plasma caliber sets. Color quality is really a matter of preference and should be tweaked to your liking. I generally go with Cool color palettes. Gaming wise, the input lag is unnoticeable, and you can benefit for the 240hz refresh rate here if you like. Sound Quality: I only tested the cabinet speakers for a few minutes, and they produced decent sound. I use a 2.1 speaker system and the Linear PCM/DTS output sounds good as expected for a digital optical output. Features: 3D in my opinion is a waste of resources and gives me headaches. They could have dumped that entirely and re-directed design resources towards a better smart TV feature set (apps, etc...). The apps you get are the ones you are stuck with. I have looked all over trying to update the Netflix app on the TV and have turned up nothing. The TV uses an older version of Netflix which does not work well with my tablets sync features. Sony should have spent more time on this, and perhaps included an app store or something.

This 3D - HDTV is one of the Best that Sony has ever released. It has a great picture with many enhancements. The 3D glasses (you get 4 pairs) are Active; which means that they are battery powered. But, that's a good thing because you get better resolution with Active Glasses as opposed to Passive (the ones you get at the Movie Theater). They are comfortable to wear and for those who wear regular glasses, the nose piece is removable so you can wear these in front of your regular glasses without a problem. It even has Simulated 3D so you can watch regular TV in "simulated" 3D; if you choose. But, it's good for regular TV viewing; as well. Match this up with a good Sony 3D Blu-Ray player and you're good to go. The TV will recognize a Sony connected component and automatically switch the Input to that component when it's turned on (using an HDMI cable). The speakers face downward but there really isn't a problem hearing this TV at all. It has 240 Hertz Refresh Rate so it makes fast moving objects "jitter" free. Those of you with 120 Hertz. Refresh Rate TV's know what I'm talking about. Overall, this is a very good quality TV which also has built in WiFi and a LAN Input Connection on the back. Makes a great Computer Monitor, too (you need an HDMI output on the back of your PC because there is no VGA Input on the TV). I could go on and on but, you get the basic idea.

I have had this tv for almost 3 years now and it is just as brilliant as anything out there today (maybe not the latest 4k, but honestly... nothing is broadcast in 4k, so anything over Fios is absolutely sharp as can be) I don't use the 3D feature very often, but the nephews like watching movies with it. 4 pairs of glasses were included which is great. The simulated 3D works surprisingly well. This tv has every feature one could want (no HDR, but that's a gimmick in my mind). The Smart features are easy to access and very helpful if you use them. The picture is sharp, blacks are dark and the swiveling stand is easy to maneuver. I would totally recommend this tv (55"), and larger if all holds true.

The Good: Overall, we are really impressed with this TV. We set out looking for a plasma TV, but went with the Sony after seeing the picture quality. To our non-videophile eyes, it looked just as good as the Panasonic plasma that we compared it to (and originally wanted to purchase). The colors, and options to adjust them, give it life like colors. The blacks are deep and don't have a noticeable "glow" in low light situations; they really seem like true blacks. We enjoy watching sports and have not had any issues with motion blur, ghosting, or pixilation. There are settings you can adjust to create a smoother picture, but even with these turned down or off we have not run into any motion issues. There are multiple HDMI ports that support the different HDMI standards. This is nice if you want to connect a phone/tablet as well as something else. The built-in mirror casting (DLNA) is also nice for wirelessly connecting supported devices. The Bad: Some of the settings are buried in menus. For example, you can't just switch the picture from Cinema 1 to Sports to Standard. Instead, you have to click options and scene selection to switch between the different scenes, Cinema, Sports, etc. Then, from there, you have select whether you want Cinema 1, Cinema 2, or another type of picture setting. The Netflix App: It has a terrible over-saturated soap-operaish picture that cannot be changed. You need to use a Roku, Apple TV, DVD/Blu-Ray player's app to get picture settings. It is a terrible app, unless you like soap-operas. The sound is good, but limited. Let's face it, thinner TVs mean smaller, less powerful speakers. The sound is decent from the small speakers, but you do not get the detail you would get from a sound bar or larger speakers. The sound is by no means bad or super low, just limited. The price: The price has dropped a little, but is still almost in the 4K price range. We lucked out on ours and caught a returned item. You might need to wait for a sale before picking this up. Overall, this is a great TV if you can catch a sale.

Best 55" Picture I've Ever Seen!

I read many reviews and did personal comparisons in several stores and found this TV to have the sharpest, highest contrast and most vivid picture. It's certainly not as sharp as 4K (which I would have bought it there was more content), it's the next closest for me. I didn't really want the 3D capability, but TVs without it don't have the faster 240Hz refresh rates that smooth motion (better for watching sports). However, I found I actually enjoy some of the 3D content from DirectTV. I highly recommend this TV!

Here is my review after originally purchasing a 70" Vizio M701D-A3R but returning it due to problems connecting to the internet right out of the box (and other factors): I went to Best Buy this evening and decided on purchasing the Sony KDL55W900A which is a 55" and to return the Vizio after reading so many positive reviews of the Sony. While clearly smaller (55" picture versus 70"), right out the box it is a way superior TV compared to the Vizio. The picture quality compared to the Vizio is stunning - I wouldn't even put them in the same league. My wife and I both were "wowing" at the Sony as soon as the picture came on after set up. I think the Vizio at 70" was just way too large physically, was not sturdy on it's stand (it was very wobbly - a big issue since I have children and that huge TV - both in size and weight, would do some serious damage to one of my kids if it was to fall over), but also too large for an HD picture at 1920x1080 resolution. I didn't feel the HD picture looked nearly as clear/ detailed like it should on the Vizio compared to the Sony. I also noticed bad artifacts during the only movie I played on it which was the animiated movie "Epic". To be fair to the Vizio, I never calibrated the picture/ adjusted the picture settings, so I probably could have adjusted it to my liking (or at least improvement from the factory defaults) but I haven't done anything yet to the Sony and I'm already more than pleased with the picture. Forget pleased, I'm actually excited to test out PS3 & PS4 games and 3D movies on this sucker. Besides the picture, the physical appearance of the TV itself is much nicer as well, including the stand of the Sony. I am happy with the decision I made which is to return the defective Vizio, and go with the Sony. The Sony is certainly an expensive set for it's size ($1999 for a 55" TV), but it is simply gorgeous (and if you were thinking of signing up for Netflix/ Hulu/ or both - you get one year free for both of those services which is about a $200 value). I might be a little biased since I love Sony products but I think anyone who purchases this Sony TV will have a similar feeling as I do. In summary - if you really have your mind set on a 70" TV, then maybe this Vizio would be good for you. I initially thought I wanted a really large TV since my last TV was a 60". When I was researching a new TV, I wasn't even looking at anything smaller than 65" - and that was the mistake I made. The reality is this 55" Sony is smaller than my last TV, but I'm not noticing the size difference because the picture is THAT GOOD (and I've read from other viewers that they felt the same thing about the size not being an issue). I had seen the Sony on display at Best Buy, but I swear (like I have read by so many others), that they calibrate the Samsung TVs to look amazing (and other brand's 4K TVs), and pretty much everything else to look sub par, because the Sony certainly didn't stand out compared to other TVs there. However, once plugged in at home - holy smokes, what a difference. If you want a TV that will likely last you several years (I kept my previous Sony for 11 years and just sold it - still works like day 1), then get the Sony. If you have your mind set on a giant screen but picture quality (and overall quality) is not that important to you, then go with a different TV - e.g. the Vizio. But if you were to ask me which TV would I purchase for the money - the Vizio 70" at $2099 or the Sony 55" at $1999, I would certainly go with the Sony. Update after owning this Sony for a month: I couldn't be more pleased with the purchase. While pricey, this TV makes me say "Wow" out loud almost every time I turn it on. The picture quality is stunning (thank you Triluminos Display!), the appearance of the set is gorgeous, over-the-air TV reception is very strong (I couldn't believe the amount of channels it picked up - CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, CW, WB, etc.) all in HD - all for free, and more. The built-in apps work fine but I prefer the app design for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Streaming on the PS3 as opposed to the ones built into this TV (the PS3 GUI is slicker and prettier with larger images, cover art, etc. then the GUI on the TVs built-in apps). The 3D works, but it honestly gives me a headache after about 10 minutes (this is not the TVs fault - I'm assuming most 3D TVs would have this effect on me). The other problem with 3D is the limited content out there for a good, 3D movie. I can't comment on the sound since I use a surround sound system (does anyone actually use the built-in TV speakers at this day and age?), but when I did test it out it seemed fine. I'm going to hook up my new Playstation4 this weekend and I'm sure I'll be blown away. Do yourself a favor if you are wondering what TV you should purchase - just buy this TV. If you think it's a bit pricey, get rid of your cable and save 100+ a month and just use free over-the-air HD with a $5 antenna and take advantage of the free Netflix and Hulu for a year ($200 value), and you won't miss cable one bit - I surely don't.

I play my PS4, XB1 and watch hd and 3d content on this telivision. The scene select option is the area where you select game mode. The television offers several different modes, but the "General" option is so overwhelmingly better than the other options that the only time I switch it is to gaming mode. The picture is the best in the biz. The sound beats out most flat screens. A lot of the general settings are already fine-tuned, and many professional reviews will say this baby is ready to plug and play. For those who like to tweak things for their personal tastes its only going to take away from perfection. The sound is crisp, but not abrasive, I was blown away by the sound and I feel no need to buy a sound system. I love massive bass but that's for music, not for viewing, unless you are all about movie-theater booms that can be heard next door, you will be pleased with the out-of-box sound. The responsiveness of the Smart OS is fantastic compared to all of my Samsungs (I live with my parents and we own 2 Samsungs, both top-notch for their time - 2010 & 2012). The blacks are unrivaled and I was immediately attached to this TV when watching "Blue Planet" and they were in the abyssal zone looking at plankton that emitted rainbow lights in the midst of pitch-black darkness. This is an amazing price for a top 3 (lets face it, its #1) LED television. Only thing I'm concerned with is my secondary remote (you get a big one with more features and a small one with basic ones) sometimes has a hard time powering on my TV. The big one works fine. I am within 1.5 months of purchasing and will look into the matter.

At first I didn't know whether I would like this set as it didn't seem very bright. But turning off the light sensor brought immediate results, but i was still not excited about the brightness and the contrast during daytime viewing. I have a bright room. I eventually began to experiment with the different scenes (Cinema, General, Sports, Auto, etc.) These scenes each have their own built in settings that limit the amount of adjustment. In general, a Cinema scene for instance can not be made to look like the sports scene. So you must choose a scene for the specific content and adjust to your liking. I am still tweaking the scenes but am much closer to what I like. The colors really pop and I can now view movies, sports, news, and daytime or nighttime with spectacular results. i have not used the 3D, and just a little of gaming, as I use the TV mainly for regular TV fair, Netflix, and Movies. Netflix shows great. The TV has 4 hdmi inputs, which makes it easy to add components. The remote is ok but it does not light up in the dark. Also the limited viewing angle may be a concern for some. The TV does come with a swivel stand which helps. I have a lot more to learn about this TV, but i am totally satisfied.

Great picture and color is much deeper. Almost too deep. Feels like you're looking at undiluted colors. I have always liied Sony tv's, but they are expensive. The picture (colors, motion, clarity) is amazing on this set, sound is on par with flat screens, and the extras like 3d and smart functionality are added bonuses. Got this tv with 24 month financing so I am set!

Bought this TV as an upgrade to my seven year old Sony KDL46XBR3. This new Sony has a mind blowing picture. The difference between the new and the old is night and day. I'm not knocking the older Sony, but it's amazing how technology has improved. This new TV hangs on a wall in a man cave and it is like having my own movie theater on a smaller scale with my surround sound. There are a whole bunch of features that I haven't even checked out yet. 3D works very well and the glasses are pretty comfortable. You will not be disappointed if you purchase this TV.

This television is incredible out of the box. We were up and running about 10 minutes after hooking it up. The tv comes with 4 pairs of 3D glasses and 2 remotes - 1 large remote and 1 small remote for changing inputs, volume, etc. The picture on this television is so incredible, you have to see it to believe it. Go into a Best Buy store and see for yourself. I do not work for Sony or Best Buy - just your average guy who did my homework on our TV purchase. The 240hz is definitely the way to go. Football on this TV has never been cooler. I can't wait to watch the Olympics.

If this was based on just design, the TV would score much higher. The picture quality most if the time is great, so much detail as it is a high definition screen, but even seemed clearer than my older Sony Bravia HD 1080p TV. The refresh rate I was coming from was 60Hz, so motion was much crisper, for the most part. This is where I found this sets fatal flaw as well, and I don't know if it is just this model, or 240Hz models in general. When playing games, Xbox One, 360, PS3 etc the clarity was gorgeous, except for the fact it created a smudge halo around you character, car, health bar or anything that was remotely stationary on the screen with motion around it. It wasn't a small "smudge" either, it was a good 1" or so all the way around. I thought it might be the system or the game, but it seemed pretty consistent from system to system, and game to game. I thought it could be a rendering issue in the game. I tried changing settings and video modes, all to no avail. I went online and found recommended custom settings for this particular model, I though it might be remedied with settings but I was wrong. I though it might just be games, however it did it during TV shows and Movies as well. You have people on screen with "smudging" all around, hence my description of a "smudge halo." I found this to be quite distracting, so much so that I decided to bring the TV back to Best Buy. Glad I am an Elite member as I had more than just a few days to evaluate if I could deal with it or not. Maybe I had a bad set, but it is what I experienced.

I bought this TV after extensive research (online and in-store). I cannot be more satisfied with my purchase. The picture quality is jaw dropping, and the size, build, smart TV features and overall aesthetics are all excellent. I noticed some artifacts in the 3D department, but this could be due to the source as well. However this was not my primary reason for purchasing the TV. If you purchase this TV you will not regret it.

I researched this TV for three months, read the reviews, looked at price and specs on the Sony Web site. The only way to truly appreciate this TV is to see it at Best Buy. It's picture quality rivals that of the new 4 series TVs. It has a lifelike picture and the active 3D is outstanding. This set is an example of where the best of Sony's technology is showcased. What I tell my friends and family, its the quality of the unit and not the size of the screen. Why brag about the size of your HD if the picture is blur and color is too bright or people are tinted. Sony are know to have the best Picture n color where people are viewed in there correct skin tone. Samsongs are to bright that is why I return the top of the line Samsong. You pay for a quality picture in this Sony..
