Great picture; remote lacking

If you’re trying to decide between an OLED and this television, definitely go for this. The black levels are almost as good for less than half the price. In fact, OLED television have two major drawbacks—they are more prone to image burn-in, and they are highly reflective, so you will lights in your room reflecting in your television. This television has full array backlight—not really sure I can tell that big of a difference from my other television that has side backlighting, but I can’t complaint about any aspect of the picture. Colors are bright and vivid and the detail is sharp. My biggest complaint with this television is the remote. Sony makes the most unattractive removes in the industry, and this one is no exception. Samsung and LG are including high tech remotes with their television. Sony’s remote looks like a remote from 20 years ago. A rectangle with buttons. The other issue is the sound. If you don’t plan to hook this up to a sound bar or sound system, then try it out in the store. The sound from the television is mediocre. I have a sound bar so not an issue with me. Overall, I think this is a great value.

Great 4K TV; makes regular HD content look better

I purchased this tv about a couple weeks ago from my local bestbuy store. Initial setup was easy and intuitive; everything from unboxing to full setup took under an hour.
My previous tv was a regular HDTV from Sony which has been serving the household really well since 2005. That tv still looks great even by today's standards. However when I turned on my shiny new X900F tv, I immediately noticed a huge difference in the same HD programming on both tv's. The images on the new tv popped in scenes with lots of colors - especially in Pixar-type animated movies - and there was so much more detail in dark scenes. On the other hand, the skin tones seemed natural which is one of the ways I judge picture quality.
Comparing to my older Sony, one of the best features of X900F is that it automatically switches inputs when I turn on Sony blu-ray player and reverts back to the last channel when blu-ray player is turned off. Though it doesn't happen when AppleTV is turned on/off which would have been nice.
I have the tv set up in a brightly lit room with lots of natural sunlight in the daytime so I changed color settings based on articles I found online. It improved daytime viewing experience but I found it to be way too bright at night. So I reverted all color settings to default which turned out to be a nice balance between day and night time viewing. I don't recommend changing color settings if ambient lights around your tv will vary at different times.
The tv isn't without flaws though. Here are some issues based on my experience:
- Viewing angles are definitely limited. If you look from too much of an angle, you can see colors losing the pop with a blackish haze.
- There is a feature called SonySync that allows you to control other Sony components. It works well with my Sony blu-ray player however the tv remote doesn't have all functions found on blu-ray remote so I can't completely tuck away that remote.
- As another reviewer noted, IR Blaster function doesn't let you do much other than switch channels on cable box. I tried 2 different cable boxes from Verizon Fios and Optimum. During setup, TV remote pulled up channel guide and cable box menu just fine but soon as setup was complete, channel guide and menu didn't work using TV remote. Personally I found this feature a bit of a joke and once again, I can't put away my cable remote either.
Having said that, I am very happy with my new 4K TV and would recommend it to anyone looking for a regular LED 4K tv.

I wound up getting this TV almost by accident. I was planning on a 65" TCL 6 originally, but was waiting for them to come back to stock and waiting on more reviews for the TV because it seems a large number of buyers were getting broken screens/DSE or vertical banding. I suspect TCL is trying to address these issues and that's why they've been out of stock for so long. I had an on the spot ride for a tax free purchase of a TV and went to Best Buy with a friend. Not only did they not have the TCL in stock they had no demo units on display.
I had to find an alternative and the x900e was gone so I decided to spend a little more on the x900f 55". The picture on this TV is flawless, I can't find any kind of defect on the display and the experience of watching it is immersive. I installed the Dolby Vision update via USB (suggest you do this to avoid having to accept the EULA and allow sony to sell your data) and Netflix works in that mode now. The android interface is not sluggish on this one since the TV includes a faster processor than the x900e. That said, I wish Sony would just switch to Roku, Android pales in comparison.
No regrets about getting a smaller set and skipping the TCL 6. I've owned Sonys in the past and my parents had Sony in the 80s and all of the sets outlived their use. You can't go wrong with this TV. If you are also on the fence with TCL 6, even at twice the price I think this one is worth the quality upgrade.

Worth The Money!

TL;DR: Awesome TV. Tried TCL but had problems. This looks great, sounds great, menus and menu features are awesome. Gaming seems a bit dark but I am still tweaking settings and I think it is the gaming issue, not the TV's. Buy this and don't look back!
Full review: I started by trying a 55" TCL 5-series TV which looked good for the price EXCEPT for the terrible backlight bleed. I looked at reviews of people trading them in and receiving WORSE TVs. I checked the next model, 6-series which was known for vertical banding. That is when I took a step back and reevaluated my situation. It is tax return season so I spent the extra cash ($1200) and bought this 55" Sony Bravia X900F. After spending so much time looking at the one star reviews for TCL and Sony, I was very nervous when I turned this on (I had to get truck-owning friend to volunteer 4 hours to bring me to Best Buy and back). What if I have to REPACKAGE and return ANOTHER TV?!?
My concerns were laid to rest immediately. Perfect black uniformity. Smooth, sharp, beautiful picture. Good sound. I was worried about going from Roku to Android TV (Since I use Youtube TV for live TV and wasn't sure how well it would be supported). I read negative reviews of the menus and OS but I found it lags once in a while but no worse than other TVs and it has a LOT of features. In fact, My daughter was upset when she saw my 9 year old VIZIO was replaced (which I bought just before she was born). That glowing Vizio emblem was a part of her living room for her entire life. She wanted that TV back. Then I showed her the apps and Youtube Kids and she fell in love with this TV!
My ONLY reservation at this point is when gaming. The brights are bright and the darks are dark but the darks seem TOO dark. I turned brightness to MAX and it is better but everything seems a little TOO dark... I read this is an issue with the actual games and their HDR functionality. Either way, I am going to look up some recommended calibrations and see what I can do but either way, the TV looks SO good and I am tickled with it.
I expect it to last a while but remember folks, Maine, as well as 9 other states, have State Implied Warranties. In Maine, it states that the TV must work for four years or must be replaced by the retailer or if they refuse, the manufacturer. If you don't get cooperation (because a lot of them don't know about these laws) you can contact your State AG office and they will send a letter on your behalf. I don't recommend buying the extended warranty in Maine but to each their own.

Not an oled, but wow, it’s good!

I have an LG oled c8 which I bought for mostly its viewing angle and color depth. I had an old XBR65X900A that worked well but was too big for its environment and wanted something smaller yet an oled was not a viable option where it was to be mounted. I had looked at this Sony many times on paper and it looked good. As an LCD, it’s viewing angle isn’t as good as an oled, but it’s mount would be movable so not an issue for me. When we walked into bestbuy to have a hands on look at the 900f, of all the TVs Mounted on the wall, this one was the only one, even at the off angle viewing, that stood out with picture brightness and color.
It runs android which on this Sony tv is rather sluggish yet an update just released mid January has helped somewhat. The nice thing about android is that it runs Netflix, amazon prime, Hulu and so on. It will even run plex player and fully load and run Kodi as well so for me it practically eliminates the need to run an external device such as an nvidia shield.

The picture quality is great and the Android based Smart TV can stream 4K content.
The newest model changed the entertainment stand to feet but they fit the Sony recommended sound bar great and provide good stability.
There are 4 HDMI inputs, one on the side and one that supports ARC that works great with sound bar and attached Blu-ray player.
Overall the unit is great and worth being on the higher side of the price range.

The most accurate colors I've ever seen, especially skin tones. There are only a couple of minor negatives: (1) the viewing angle is rather narrow for this type of panel, and (2) the Android user interface can be un-intuitive if you're not used to it. It's also painfully slow at times.

Got this to upgrade my 8 year old plasma and could not be happier. It's just an incredible set. Price point is mid range, but product looks high end to me. Paired with an Apple TV 4K and even regular 1080p looks fantastic.

No Soundbar Needed

I recently purchased this TV as well as a Sony soundbar. From listening to the TV on display in the store, there was a significant difference with and without the soundbar. When I hooked the TV up, the sound was fair. I then spent some time going into the TV menu and was able to make a number of adjustments to the sound (including the advanced settings) and the sound from the TV speakers is MUCH better to the point where I returned the soundbar. If you take some time to adjust the speaker settings on the TV, I think you will find that the speakers on this TV are much better than most other sets. The picture quality on this TV is outstanding. I would highly recommended this set!!

Sony is a very good and reputable brand, that is why I opt to get this TV. Quality and sound are optimal and the image is amazing especially when watching older movies on dvd. I hooked this up to one of my older sound bars and I was very impressed with the precision and sound both complement to eachother. I did have to get new HDMI cables to support the 4K, but overall I would spend the money and get again. I am considering getting the newer model for my living room!

I purchased this set back in May and I have not been disappointed. The picture quality is 2nd to none. With it being a Sony you are going to pay a premium price but you are getting a premium product. I did a lot of research and this one always came out on top.

VERY pleased with this TV. Great clarity and brightness. One thing that is important to note after reading some of the other reviews is that in order to enjoy 4k clarity, you must have newer 4k capable HDMI cables (you can't use the old HDMI 1.0 cables and get 4k); and you should get an updated 4k specific future proof box from your cable company. Comcast, for example, has a new 4k DVR that links to 4k content from Netflix, Amazon and the Olympics. You have an option to go through the apps pre-loaded on the TV, but it's nice to have 4k right through your cable box at the ready. Switch your box out for free, and as more 4k signals appear via cable, you and your set will be ready for all of them!

The picture with 4K content is fantastic. But the picture with our HDTV cable box is not good at all. Grainy, soft edges, not anywhere near as good as my former tv, a 7 or 8 year old Samsung 1080 HDTV.
I wrestle with having to pay $250 to have a Geek Squad guy come see what can be done, or do I just bring it back for a Samsung? This is my 2nd Sony. The first was a total factory defect. Not a happy buyer at all.
