Hi EricaW,
We regret to hear that you are not satisfied with the BRAVIA Theater Quad. For optimum performance, make sure that the software version of the home theater system is up-to-date (via the Sony BRAVIA Connect app; Tap Settings - Software update).
Sound quality may vary depending on the source content. You have the option to adjust the settings of the home theater system to fine-tune the sound quality to your needs. You may find this link helpful:
If the home theater system is not working properly, reset the control box and speakers:
Resetting the control box -Press and hold (power) on the control box for more than 10 seconds.
Resetting the speakers -Press and hold LINK on the bottom of the speaker for more than 10 seconds.
The power indicator on the speaker flashes slowly in red and the reset starts. The power indicator on the speaker flashes in green and amber alternately when the reset is completed. After the reset is completed, disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) for the speaker from the AC outlet (mains), then reconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) for the speaker after the power indicator on the speaker turns off.
Your feedback about the speaker design is also appreciated.
Hope this helps. If still not resolved or you need further assistance, please email us at [email protected] with the following details:

When Sony released the HT-A9 system in 2021, I was really excited to have an option that installs pretty similar to a soundbar (clean, easy setup), but had the separation of a full surround sound system. I was impressed with the performance of the HT-A9, but had some issues with the speakers cutting out, making popping noises, and the control box would restart randomly at times. I was cautiously optimistic about the Theatre Quad (aka HT-A9M2) considering Sony made a few upgrades from the HT-A9 (one extra driver in each speaker, new control box, configuration now app based on your phone or tablet rather than relying on a TV based menu). Setup of the HT-A9M2 physically was very easy. There is one power cord for each speaker, and you have an option of putting a foot on each (included in the box), or there is a bracket screw on the back of each that you can use to either attach to a stand or mount to the wall (with wall mounts also included in the box). I chose to mount mine to stands and then placed them in the same locations as I had the HT-A9 speakers. The control box has for the most part all the same ports, except there isn’t an optical audio cable, with Sony emphasizing an HDMI connection, so if you have an old TV with no HDMI, keep this in consideration. I have the Sony SA-SW5 subwoofer, and it paired seamlessly with the HT-A9M2, just as it did with the HT-A9. As I mentioned before, this system now is configured in the Sony Bravia app. I was excited for this as the TV-based menu system of the HT-A9 was slow and tedious. Of course, you will want to make this system give you the best surround and height sound experience, so the app launches you into this setup pretty quickly. My system first had to perform updates. This is where I began to get a little frustrated. The process started and it kept canceling out. I was sitting in my preferred location, about 8 feet from the control box, and it took a solid 30 minutes of multiple tried to troubleshoot the fact that it works better if you are right next to the box with your device. Once I did that it finally updated. I then was able to configure the system. That took a few tries also, the speakers running through their sound profile and then it mysteriously telling me it didn’t complete. It was again pretty frustrating. It’s one of those experiences you hope you don’t have to do again. But you’re here for the sound I imagine. I ran the system through a gamut of sources that I like to use to try out speakers. First was streaming music from Apple Music through the Apple TV. I use this because it provides lossless content and Atmos music that I can actually tell is distinct. I’m happy to say the HT-A9M2 does a great job of throwing music all around the room. I noticed when comparing my HT-A9 to it that the HT-A9M2 has a fuller range of sound, I think due to the extra driver in each speaker. I also noticed the height effects were more pronounced without having to do manual adjustments in the app. So right out of the box the HT-A9M2 sounds phenomenal for music. There was great stereo separation, which is one of the reasons I consider this system far superior to any soundbar situation. Next I put on a streaming movie from Netflix. Again this source gives you real Atmos sound and I wanted to feel the content. I put on an episode of a nature series, one that has rain and thunder, and I will tell you that this blew me away. I feel like the height speakers in the HT-A9M2 have been upgraded, or maybe the processing is refined, but it was significantly better to me than the HT-A9 could do. I finally put in a DVD to my player that outputs Dolby TrueHD sound, and have my player directly plugged into the HDMI in port of the HT-A9M2. Again, I was elated that the HT-A9M2 handled this content perfectly. I had incredible surround sound flying around my head. I’m very pleased. As far as the look of the new speakers, I have to say I sort of prefer the cylindrical bodies of the HT-A9 over these fabric covered panels. I can see how someone might prefer these aesthetically, they are flat, so on a wall they would likely blend in more. It’s subjective. Overall, I would say the sound of these, the convenience of these make them a great buy. I wish they cost a bit less, for having to buy a separate subwoofer (which I think is needed, because the speakers give you some bass, but it’s not impressive), and for the fact that you don’t have a lot of configuration option to them. They do a good job of creating a sound scape, but it would be nice to have more customization at this price. If you want a great sound experience, both for music and for cinema, then I would not hesitate to recommend the Sony Theatre Quad.

I can't say enough about this home theater system. I've been using soundbars forever as an upgrade for TV audio. Honestly, how many TV's have great speakers... I'll wait... okay enough time. I can't think of any that can fill a room and enhance home theater viewing. Soundbars do a great job but you've got most of the sound coming from one enclosure, with few exceptions. I've had issues with soundbars with wireless rear speakers with the speakers cutting in and out, so frustrating!
The other alternative is running your TV through a stereo receiver which can be a little overkill for anything less than Star Wars, or in my case Formula 1 races. Those stereo systems work great but they tend to take up a lot of real estate with the receiver, subwoofer, center channel, 2 front and 2 rear speakers. I does work great but what if there was something that was basically just the speakers?
Sony Bravia Home Theater System is a fantastic alternative. So simple to setup too. Once unboxed I looked at available locations of the 4 wireless speakers. Each speaker is clearly marked so don't rush the setup and make sure to use the correct speaker for the correct location, although swapping later isn't really a big deal unless say you have wall mount in the front and shelf mount in the rear. Since the only cables are the power cord just unplug and move to the correct location. Easy peazy!
Suprisingly great sound comes from a very shallow speaker housing. While each of the speakers is shallow they have a fairly decent size. I have all of mine set up as shelf mounted since my home theater furnature is more traditional with tall shelving units and a spanning shelf and cabinet under in the center for the TV. I think I would have wall mounted the fronts if I had more modern furniture. The brackets swap easy enough if you transition at a later date. I'm hanging on to the wall mount hardware brackets just in case.
Other than the 4 speakers with mounting hardware and the power cables for each of the speakers you get a hub that connects to the TV via HDMI (arc preferred) but you also have options to connect via bluetooth. Download the Bravia Home Theater app from you friendly neighborhood app store, connect the power cable and power up the hub and don't forget to plug in each of the speakers.
Setup from here gets even easier with the app. You are stepped through network setup, making sure the speakers are correctly positioned and the next step of the app setting optimal volume for each speaker depending on where you are listening from. This makes sure that the sound is balanced and you aren't overpowered by one speaker.
Once you run through the initial setup you can fine tune the rear speaker volume or adjust the bass more to your liking. There are other features that I haven't started messing with but I do miss the extra thump of a subwoofer which there are two models from Sony that are compatible. I'll be making a run to my local Best Buy to grab the 200W wireless sub. And once I do it's so easy to add the sub with the Bravia app.
I also love that the hub allows connection via Bluetooth. It was easy for me to shift from TV input to streaming audio from my phone. The app allows you to easily switch input to the hub. Impressive, all without a big stereo receiver.
The only negative I have is that the app requires a Sony account. If you already have one or Playstation account those are consolidated but I'm getting more and more annoyed when electronics require accounts. Every week if not day we hear of data breaches so the less platforms that require accounts the better for me anyway. The price is a bit on the steep side at $2500, but since you are getting 4 great speakers and a hub the price of a comparable traditional home theater system could run you much more with equavilent results.
Otherwise I can find nothing to complain about and plenty to rave about. Two solid thumbs up.

I have been testing out the Sony Bravia Theatre Quad for a few days now and I have been completely blown away by its performance. The Quad had serious shoes to fill as its predecessor was a highly beloved system.
Setup:
Setting up the Quad was very easy and straightforward. Some people have mentioned issues setting up through Bravia connect, I didn’t have any of those. All four speakers were recognized immediately. I did have a Sony SW3 subwoofer from a previous system that I was able to use with the Quad, and the app recognized that almost immediately as well. A little trick if its not being recognized, turn the sub off, then hit the sync button right next to the power button. The Quad system did its thing by scanning the acoustics of the room and using my cellphone as a mic to determine where I plan to sit the most often. This was cool to see unfold, and it really makes a difference.
Use:
I have a 2 year old Sony OLED 77 inch so everything kind of just worked. I can’t speak to experiences outside of the Sony ecosystem, but for my use, it has been flawless. The normal TV remote controls the volume of the Quads still, and I was able to use the included AUX to connect my tv to the system as a center channel. Some online reviews say this is unnecessary, I agree. I tried it both ways and honestly, you aren’t missing anything. That’s a good thing. If you have a different TV maker, don’t be worried, the Quad will still blow you away and you aren’t missing out. The Quad did come with its own little remote which has some quick useful functions such as night mode, and voice mode. Both do what you’d expect. Night turns down the sub and makes it a bit quieter, and Voice amplifies the vocals on screen. This is one of the best features. I have been watching Sopranos for the first time, and that feature actually helps me avoid subtitles! I am excited to keep experimenting with Voice as it might make subtitles go the way of the dodo for me.
Sound:
Ok, what does it sound like? Well, I did what any normal person would do. I went on Disney+ and put on Star Wars the Phantom Menace for the pod racing scene. Duh. By the way, that movie has Dolby Atmos support so it made the most out of the Quad’s abilities. Let me tell you, it freaked me out at first because it sounded like the pods were actually flying past me left and right! It felt so real and accurate to what was happening on the screen it was incredible. I cannot wait to try gaming on this. I have not had the chance, but I am positive that it will be incredible. Besides the marketed 360 degree sound, all the other stuff was great. Sound was so clear, crisp, and loud. A good way to think about it is remember when you first went from your TV speakers to a soundbar? Then maybe a soundbar with rear speakers? This is the next jump.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the Sony Bravia Theatre Quad lives up to the hype of its predecessor. The setup was easy, and the system seamlessly integrated with my existing Sony TV. The sound quality is phenomenal, with crystal clear dialogue and immersive 360-degree surround sound that puts you right in the middle of the action. Whether you’re watching movies, playing games, or just enjoying TV, the Bravia Theatre Quad elevates your home entertainment experience to a whole new level. If you’re looking for the absolute best in home theater sound, the Bravia Theatre Quad is the clear winner. Just be prepared to be amazed.

Easily the best premium one box solution for almost any skill level to set up and have a near movie theater experience at home. Five electrical outlets, maybe up to 20 minutes with your cell phone in hand, and the new Bravia App running. And you will be inside the premium 360 dome of sound that will give the thrills of a movie theater minus the sticky floor. Granted a bit more time might be needed for a more finished wall mount option, but I recommend not wall mounting at first till you hear and love the speakers in your home. Make sure it sounds the way you want before putting holes in the wall. And should you be lucky enough to have a PS5, there is a new level of audio supremacy to more than just your games waiting for you.
The box that contains everything is rather large and a little awkward for 1 person and I would recommend a strong friend if at all possible. Once home, you get almost everything in the box to stand or mount the speakers to whatever location you have available, short of drywall anchors and screws. Power cords are a very generous length to likely reach an outlet or two near placement.
Once you are all hooked up and speakers are placed where you want them, mind you they are labeled for room placement (left front, right front, left rear and right rear). As long as these general locations are followed from the seating area in relation to the TV. The speakers can sit at many random room heights and the software will do the calculations to optimize sound the first time you setup the speakers. Just use the easy to follow prompts on the Bravia app. It does an amazing job that really needs very little tweaking. There are a few levels you can change on your own if you like a bit more bass or higher volume in rear speakers. Just don't expect infinite adjustments to a single speaker.
How does it sound: As a Sony fan from the earliest days of their amps and Dolby surround. The Bravia Theater Quad is punching far above its size would let you think is possible. Even without a physical center speaker. It is difficult to hear that a physical center speaker is missing, audio separation is near perfect when fed premium audio from media or streaming services. You hear every bit of action and dialog easily, and that is without the voice mode enabled. Voice mode feature works to clearly hear dialog, but I found it sounding like a little too much treble was applied. Atmos tracks in films are very fun with 4 speaker units pushing several speakers per unit in a multitude of directions, audio is everywhere. Not sure if the Atmos speakers on top are tweaked for more volume, but I do hear more subtle sounds I missed before. I already own a Sony soundbar with subwoofer so I did eventually add my subwoofer to the Quad. Movies do benefit from the SW3 or the SW5 Sony subs if you want add 1 of those at checkout. Not quite mandatory, but nice to have if you like to feel the audio in your movies or music. Just beware if the neighbors are close, invite them in to hear it.
Music. While most of my native music files are high bitrate stereo. I do not have anything encoded in Atmos or 360. I may try the free streaming offer included. I think even stereo music sounds great, but some may not like surround stereo music if an audio purist type. It is fun to hear audio everywhere and even stereo gets some separation.
PS5. Finally, like many things Sony. When you have all the right pieces and they all come together, Wow! Your games sound far more immersive. I dare say I like it more than when I played it on my receiver or soundbar. From simulators to creative games to FPS. You know when you hear a sound, where it is and where to turn for the action. The Bravia Theater Quad is now on my daily use TV and PS5 setup.

I've been waiting to receive my sound system for a little while now, and after missing three straight days from the delivery company, I finally was able to get my delivery. I was a little bit more upset because once I received the package it wasn't even taped, and I'm sure pieces are missing because of it. But nonetheless I drag the box in my room and begin to connect everything to my TV. The first thing I noticed with this setup was that if you were trying to set it up in your bedroom, you would kind of need a square shape room for it to work, and the second thing I noticed, was that you were going to have a lot of chords hanging down if you mount them on the wall. My solution may not be for everyone, but I drilled a hole in the wall where the speakers were mounted and ran Accord down through the wall where I had my electrician run individual Outlets for each speaker. It may not be for everyone, but it work fine for me. And when I finally turned everything on, the first thing I played was music from one of the steaming services and was blown away by how evenly everything sounded! I've watched different movies, videos, and shows to see the wide range of sounds that these speakers have. I was a little disappointed that it did not come with a bass box, because I am so used to having one, but I do see that they're sold separately and I will definitely be getting that! I probably should have waited until I did get the bass box for my review, but surprisingly, on its own, it will be fine with just these speakers. I definitely love and will recommend this to everyone who likes a superior home sounding system!

So I like these no doubt, they are simply amazing with sound. So that is where I will start
Sound Quality - After you get these setup, you will REALLY enjoy the 360 sound these give off. They are labeled for all corners, and you can't mess the placement up for them. Once you have them in place, the sound that they produce is simply crazy good. Even though I don't have the subwoofer, there is still an option for bass boost. Turn it up folks, because it is pretty nice. It's not subwoofer level, but it's good enough to hear some deep tons.
Build Quality - They are built very well, with strong plastic and some metal parts. They feel well built, and solid when handling them. The mess around the speakers ripped a little while I was taking it out of the box, but that was my fault. I like the quality of these speakers. They also do not weigh a lot, as I have mine mounted on the wall. They are solid.
Now for some cons - Price; these are a little high in price to NOT include the sub woofer, it should have come with these.
Setup - Now when I set it this up, and begin...it has to go through an app. Now after I set mine up, I'm told I could have skipped it. Other than that folks, these are GREAT and will take your system to the next level.

The Sony BRAVIA Theater Quad home theater system has been a game changer in transforming my living room into an immersive entertainment hub. The four wireless speakers offer incredible flexibility, allowing me to position them optimally in the room without dealing with wires. What truly sets this system apart is its innovative 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology, which delivers on its promise, creating a surround sound experience that makes me feel like I'm in the middle of the action. Additionally, the Sound Field Optimization feature automatically calibrates the sound to the room's acoustics, providing the best possible audio performance regardless of the room's size or shape.
The BRAVIA Theater Quad is a cinematic delight, delivering exceptional sound quality with crystal-clear dialogue and heart-pounding bass. The system's support for Dolby Atmos, DTS, and IMAX Enhanced formats ensures compatibility with a wide range of high-quality audio sources, enhancing the movie-watching experience. The Sound Field Optimization feature automatically calibrates the sound to the room's acoustics, providing the best possible audio performance, regardless of the room's size or shape, giving you the confidence that it will adapt to your space perfectly.
Gaming with the BRAVIA Theater Quad is a thrilling experience. The system's support for HDMI 2.1 features such as 4K120, VRR, and ALLM ensures a smooth and responsive gaming experience. Exclusive features for PS5, including Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode, elevate the visual and audio quality, making games sound better than ever.
Listening to music on the BRAVIA Theater Quad is a delightful experience. My favorite tracks sound more affluent and detailed, supporting high-resolution audio, low-res mixing, and 360 Reality Audio. The convenience of streaming music wirelessly via Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth adds a layer of comfort, allowing me to enjoy my playlists with ease. The BRAVIA Connect app is a handy tool for controlling the system from my smartphone, making it a breeze to adjust volume, sound profiles, and other advanced settings.
In terms of design, the BRAVIA Theater Quad is a sleek addition to my living space. The dual-purpose stand allows for versatile placement of the speakers, whether you prefer them free-standing or wall-mounted. The system's compact size and minimalist design ensure it blends seamlessly into any decor. Thanks to the Acoustic Center Sync feature, which enhances audio performance, it also pairs perfectly with my Sony BRAVIA TV. However, one minor con is that setting up the wall-mount brackets requires some precision, so measure and plan carefully.
Overall, the Sony BRAVIA Theater Quad home theater system is an outstanding addition to any home entertainment setup. Its superior sound quality, versatile features, and sleek design make it a worthwhile investment for movie buffs, gamers, and music lovers. While there are minor drawbacks, the pros far outweigh the cons, making this system a top choice for anyone looking to elevate their home audio experience.

The BRAVIA Theater Quad is a game-changer in home entertainment, transforming your living space into a full-fledged movie theater. From the moment I unboxed it, I could tell this was no ordinary sound system. The sleek, modern design of the “16” speakers (combined into only 4 slim physical modules) fits perfectly in my living room, enhancing the aesthetic without overwhelming the decor. As someone who enjoys a clean, minimalistic look, I appreciated how these speakers blended seamlessly into the background until it was time for them to shine.
Setting up the Quad was straightforward, thanks to the BRAVIA Connect app. The user interface is intuitive, making it easy to adjust volume, sound profiles, and advanced settings directly from my smartphone. I didn't have to fumble with multiple remotes or complicated menus, which is a huge plus for someone who values simplicity. The app also guided me through the calibration process, ensuring the sound was optimized for my room's size and acoustic characteristics.
The first movie I watched was an action-packed thriller, and I was blown away by the 360 Spatial Sound Mapping. This feature creates multiple phantom speakers around you, reflecting sound off the ceiling and walls to deliver an immersive surround sound experience. I felt like I was right in the middle of the action, with every explosion and dialogue crystal clear and perfectly positioned. One of the standout features of the Quad is the Sound Field Optimization. This technology analyzes and calibrates the sound based on your room's layout and your listening position, providing a customized audio experience. I tested it in different rooms, and the system adapted flawlessly each time, delivering consistent, high-quality sound regardless of the environment. It's like having a professional sound engineer tweaking the settings just for you.
The cinematic experience is further enhanced by the support for industry-standard formats like Dolby Atmos, DTS, and IMAX Enhanced certification. The sound quality is so detailed and immersive that it feels like you're sitting in a high-end movie theater. Even my friends, who are die-hard audiophiles, were impressed by the clarity and richness of the audio. Each speaker in the Quad features a 3-way woofer design along with an up-firing speaker, projecting sound in every direction. This innovative design ensures that you hear every detail, whether it's the subtle rustling of leaves in a quiet scene or the booming bass of an intense action sequence. Speaking of bass, the optional wireless subwoofer(s) add another layer of depth to the audio, making every thud and boom reverberate through the room. It's an absolute must-have if you want to feel every impact.
Another feature I love is the seamless integration with BRAVIA TVs. When connected to a compatible BRAVIA TV, you can control the Quad right from the TV menu, hear elevated audio with Acoustic Center Sync, and the Voice Zoom 3 feature enhances dialogue clarity, making it easier to hear what characters are saying, even during loud scenes. This is especially useful for watching dramas or documentaries where dialogue is crucial. The synchronization between the TV and sound system is flawless, creating a cohesive and immersive viewing experience.
In addition to its stellar movie performance, the Quad is also a powerhouse for gaming and streaming. It supports the latest video and gaming features, including 4K HDR, 8K HDR, and Dolby Vision, ensuring that your games look stunningly realistic. The HDMI 2.1 capabilities bring 4K120, VRR, and ALLM, making your gaming experience smoother and more responsive. Exclusive features for the PS5, like Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode, further enhance gameplay by optimizing settings automatically. For music lovers, the system supports wireless streaming with Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth, allowing you to enjoy your favorite tunes from virtually any source. This versatility makes the Quad an all-in-one solution for all your entertainment needs.
In conclusion, the BRAVIA Theater Quad is an exceptional home theater system that delivers on all fronts. Its combination of sleek design, advanced sound technologies, and ease of use makes it a standout choice for anyone looking to elevate their home entertainment setup. Whether you're a movie buff, a gamer, or someone who simply enjoys high-quality audio, the BRAVIA Theater Quad has something to offer. While the system might seem a bit pricey, its exceptional performance and the flexibility of wireless speakers make it a fantastic investment, particularly for those living in apartments or spaces where hiding wires and big speakers isn't feasible. For anyone serious about creating a cinema-like experience at home, I highly recommend the BRAVIA Theater Quad.

Immersive soundbar alternative

The BRAVIA Theater Quad almost feels like it's trying to make a statement. Possibly "more speakers are the best speakers." Rejecting the conventional design of the day where a large soundbar is paired with multiple small satellites in favor of four giant satellites, it's a striking addition to any room. But the aesthetics wouldn't matter much if it didn't work - and it certainly does. Getting it to work for you, however, will definitely require some pre-planning.
Usually, I'd start by listing things the system does particularly well. In this case, however, i feel it's more important to lead with the biggest downside. The quad speaker arrangement offers significant flexibility in terms of installation, but comes at the cost of many, many cords. Each speaker box, which is essentially a soundbar unto itself, has its own power cord, as does the controller box connected to your TV. It made getting it set up a significant challenge, particularly since the hookup for the controller box required a large wall wart rather than the slimmer two prong cables the rest of the speakers use. If the room you intend to use it in doesn't have lots of outlets located in convenient places, I don't think this is a good sound system to be considering compared to similarly performing options that can get by with just two or three cords that are likely going to be significantly easier to hide.
If that doesn't dissuade you though... man, this thing is GOOD.
With a total of sixteen discrete channels for surround sound, the level of immersion this system can achieve is second only to a modern Atmos equipped theater auditorium. My setup was basically a sound system torture test. The room it's in is irregularly shaped, giving it tons of inconvenient obstructions and places for sound to reflect off of surfaces in odd ways. I've tried surround sound systems there before and always had, at best, qualified successes. This one barely seemed bothered. After a brief round of setup and calibration in the app (almost all of which was automated) it launched into a demo that put me right into the middle of a jungle where I could close my eyes and hear birds and animals moving all around me with no distinguishable dropouts or deviations. I don't know if it's AI, good engineering, or just a ton of processing power at work, but it does its job.
I also do have to commend Sony for thinking about extras. In the box you get a full kit for wall mounting the speakers if you don't have the furniture to use the included stands, a spare HDMI cable in case you need to use the controller box as a passthrough, and a decent little remote which you'll probably never need to use once you get CEC set up. The speakers also support just about every surround sound standard out there and seem very capable of automatically detecting which one it should use. There are a lot of functions locked behind the app, which I know some people find to be annoying, but overall I found that the app was well designed and only occasionally needed to be used for fine adjustment. If you're a bass fan though you might be a little annoyed to learn that Sony declined to include a subwoofer in the set - requiring you to purchase a separate compatible unit if you want to get the full theatrical sound experience (and find yet another outlet to power it.) But there are at least multiple options to choose from, allowing the system to be a bit more flexible than most theaters in a box options. Just be aware that the flexibility doesn't extend to the satellites themselves - each one is designed for a specific part of your room, and will need to be placed properly for the calibration to work.
While the wiring issues make it hard to recommend the Quad to everyone, I do think there are a lot of good use cases for this. I can see it doing very well with a minimalist home theater setup using a projector or thin wall mounted OLED where the bulk of a soundbar wouldn't fit, a basement game room conversion where outlets could be placed in the ceilings or walls specifically for the speakers to use, or a living room where you need something that can blend in better than most of the black boxes on the market. So long as you go into it prepared to accommodate its unusual requirements, you can look forward to a very impressive soundscape.

Great Surround Sound in-a-box system

The new Sony Theater Quad is the latest and greatest Sony Dolby Atmos surround sound system available currently. It also features Sony's own 360-degree spatial audio processing which provides an atmos-esque audio experience for media that doesn't support that codec. In my opinion the 360-degree audio is awesome and enhances everything you use it with. I have been really impressed with these speakers’ ability to generate “ghost” speakers around the room to provide the surround sound experience that you wouldn’t expect from only having 4 speakers. Those of you with a Sony TV can actually use the TV speakers to act as a true center channel which is a neat feature. The new square design is aesthetically pleasing in my opinion and provided a “stealthier” look than a traditional sound bar or bookshelf style speaker once installed in my room. Setup was extremely easy thanks to the wireless design of this system, the only concern for placement ultimately being access to a power outlet. I used the Bravia app to get it connected to my home network and utilize the built in sound space optimization it offers. Once you have paired your surround system to the app it can utilize your phone mic and microphones integrated in the individual speakers to "tune" the sound for your room. This was a great feature for me because the room I installed this system in is a little oddly shaped and not just a traditional box that I could install the speakers perfectly parallel. Even with the issues that the shape of the room may have presented the Quad system provides an excellent surround sound experience. The app also made it extremely easy to add a Sony wireless subwoofer I already had from my previous set-up, the Quad is compatible with the SA-SW3 and SW5 wireless subwoofers that have been on the market for a few years now. If you don't already have a sub, each speaker contains its own subwoofer, but I would highly recommend adding one of these standalone subs to your setup if possible. Another great feature for me is the Voice Zoom 3 since I am a bit hard of hearing. It uses AI (a buzzword that is quickly becoming annoying unfortunately) to improve identify voices as well as ambient sounds and then amplify those channels to provide a clearer presentation of these channels. It works EXTREMELY well and makes watching certain media much more enjoyable for me and I have even been able to turn off the subtitles that I typically use at times. Overall I would definitely recommend considering the Sony Bravia Quad for your surround upgrade, especially if you are already invested in their TV and/or own one of the supported subwoofers. Awesome system!

Back to a multi speaker sound system after years of soundbars being my normal go to. For years now after buying a new TV I would always just pair it with a soundbar of the same brand. This has worked for years and been an easy solution to a lot of sub par TV's built in speakers. Well for my most recent TV (the Sony A95K Bravia OLED), Sony broke that trend of basically requiring an external sound system to get a good home theater experience. The built in audio of the A95K sounds as good or better then the normal sound bar I wouldve bought for a TV.
With that being the case I started looking at more high end options so I would get a significant upgrade in sound, and that wasnt going to happen with any low to mid range soundbar. Thats when I saw the Sony Bravia theater quad system. Not only was this a much better solution for greatly improving the A95Ks sound, but its a Sony Bravia as well. So this was a perfect match in more ways then one.
In the box you get the speakers, stand, wall mount, ac cord and adapter, remote, batteries, HDMI cable, and center speaker cable. The set up was very easy, mainly just deciding how and where you are going to install the speakers. If you are using a Sony Bravia with the “S center” speaker jack you can also use the TV as a center speaker. Most everything just worked since it was Bravia to Bravia. And the app makes it a lot easier with great set up instructions and steps.
When it comes to the sound I think a sub woofer would greatly improve things which I am looking into. But that does not mean this set up doesnt sound good. It has outstanding sound. And like I said I had gotten so use to regular soundbars set ups that I forgot just how good a proper multi speaker set up is like. Surround takes on a whole new meaning. Having the sound correctly “follow” what you are seeing on screen just cant be matched. As well as “feeling” the sounds. Of course this is talking about movies, and other video. But music is insanely good as well. The highs are high but not piercing, the mids perfect. And even without the sub lows clap hard and accurate.
So if you are looking at soundbars or other surround systems this should be at the top of your list for sure. Although not required if you have a Sony Bravia the 2 together work so well and give you the best home theater experience available in my opinion. Ive got a list of movies in my head I am going to watch again just to get that same experience but on a whole new level!

I was interested in matching this system to my 85” Bravia 9, and getting rid of my home theater speakers, processor, and amplifier in my living room. However, there are three big strikes against it:
1. Requires an app to set it up and that app is a data collector. Sony should just include a microphone or use the Sony remote mic as an option.
2. Not only an app is required, but a Sony account. Why? To get the hooks in you.
3. I can’t connect my own subwoofer to it. Really? I would buy a reasonably priced wireless dongle, but I guess they don’t want to deal with all the folks who would use a mismatched sub. That kind makes sense but still.
It seems like a great product, but those are deal breakers for me.

Phantom channel ineffective at the edge of my sofa

These speakers are spectacular; when you're sitting in the middle.
If I sit on any edge on my sofa, all I hear is one of the front speakers. I've calibrated the speakers in the Bravia Connect app over 30 times.
Could I calibrate the speakers based on where I'm sitting? Sure, but now if I have anyone else watching a movie with me, their experience is compromised.
I would love to use the S-Center feature but since I own a Samsung Neo QLED TV, there is absolutely no way to use this feature.
Really dumb that Sony locks their TV center-channel feature into their ecosystem.

"Upgraded" to this from the original HT-A9 which sadly died on me.
What can I say other than that I didn't even get to hear how this one sounds because you can't set it up without the Bravia Connect app and a Sony account, and the Sony account creation/sign-in process was broken for me.
Even if I got it working, it's ridiculous that a product that does not even need to be connected to the internet would require an online service to use. What happens when Sony discontinues the Bravia Connect app or drops support for this device? It becomes useless.
And Sony has a history of doing just that. Sony shut down the PlayStation Vita store in 2021, rendering devices that users bought as recently as 2019 obsolete. Sony has removed purchased games and video content from user accounts after licensing deals ran out.
On top of that, Sony has a history of mishandling user data. This requirement of using a Sony account is just so that they can sell your data, assuming they don't get hacked again and lose it all.
