Impossible to use without a smart phone

The interface leaves a lot to be desired and it is not possible to use without the phone. This product is a no go as far as I am concerned.

I bought this as I'm a firm believer that today's smartphones are far more capable than even the most expensive OEM or aftermarket car audio interfaces. This unit has applications available in Google Play or Apple app stores. Those apps imitate an in dash touchscreen receiver and add more functionality by merging your apps into the app itself.
As of the date of writing this, I've used it with the Apple and the Android versions. The Apple version must be plugged in via USB to use the main parts of the app. The Android version is better, as it works the same wirelessly via Bluetooth.
I can't believe this, but the application is completely broken with the latest version of Android (Lollipop). The app will not even launch and crashes immediately. It has been months since this update was released and still no support from Sony.
Using the receiver without a phone is completely unbearable. The remote is required for anything other than volume and source selection.
If I could return this unit I would.
