I recently bought a Sony Alpha Series camera for the main reason of already having compatible lenses from my Minolta days. I specifically chose the a65 based on it's convenient fit between the a57 and a77. You get the key features of the a77 (24 mp sensor) at more of an a57 price. After shooting a little with the a65, wondered if I would not have been better off with the a57. I wasn't seeing the benefit of 24mp with the kit lens. Someone had told me about the nifty-fifty for portraits. I was surprised to see a price well under $200, and decided to give it a try. After my first day of shooting with the 50mm, I was convinced that I had a new camera. The detail, bokeh and speed were a major difference from the kit lens, giving me much more zoom and crop capabilities when editing. I also use it for video with sharp results. In my opinion, this is probably one of the best purchases for a Sony Alpha camera.

    Portrait Studio Quality at Home

I may not visit portrait studios anymore. The depth in pictures is well pronounced with little effort. Lack of zoom sometimes makes it hard to capture the desired frame. Easy to swap lenses. Manual Focus is fast enough. Doesn't feel like its made out of a cheap material.

Light lens, plastic mount great for low light, good bokeh, and less than 200 bucks. I found it on sale for 67 dollars so how could I not buy it for my a77ii. Even at full price it makes for well worth it prime lens

It is an excellent product, very good quality for its price. I would have wanted to buy the f 1.4 lens which I'm sure would have a better picture quality but the price is also 3 times higher than this lens. A lens with f 1.8 and a very good image quality and depth priced at $180, I couldn't ask for anything more. I am very satisfied with the quality of pictures I am getting in a fraction of a price. I really like this product.

I was looking for a new lens for my Sony A230 to shoot in low light better. This little number does the trick. My shows look so great through this lens.

I needed a 50 prime lens for some portraits - everyone needs a 50 prime in their collection. This one definitely does the job. Focus is sharp, and as I am not an expert, I use autofocus mainly - the lens is smarter than I am :-) I had an old lens that didn't work so well and hung up constantly. This one doesn't hang at all. It is a good buy and worth what Sony charges.

Out of the lenses, I own, the 50mm f/1.8 prime lens from Sony is my absolute favorite. Portraits look stunning at such a low aperture and details look incredibly sharp. I would recommend this lens for casual shooters who want to start into portrait photography or want to add more of a "depth of field" look to their shots.

best value "portrait" lens for sony APSC

I have a Sony APSC Camera A77, this lens has a effective range for a great "portrait" lens, IQ is better than f2.8 kit lens. especially at 50mm the kit lens is at softest focal range. Highly recommended for taking portraits shots. focal length is a bit long for indoor. you can consider 35mm/f1.8 for indoor uses
