I really enjoyed watching this 3 hours cut of Superman the movie on blu ray. Also, I’m a huge fan of DC Comics, Star Wars, and Marvel comics in old and new movies. Although, I still wish they would have the DVD version and 4K of 3 hour cut Superman the movie. I was very happy to see the special edition of Superman the movie with special features from 2001 DVD as a kid. Hopefully, they’ll have Superman 2, Richard Donner cut, 3, and 4.

An awesome movie. The first true superhero movie that created a genre, but also crafted by Richard Donner to be an excellent movie. Christopher Reeve’s performance is great, and Gene Hackman, plus a wonderful score by none other that John Williams, are all top-notch.

The late Richard Donner; Christopher Reeves; & we can’t forget Marlon Brando; who helped give this movie some clout !!! Gene Hackman was simply brilliant; as Lex Luther; & Margot Kidder; Ned Beatty; & Jackie Cooper; were excellent in supporting roles; making this movie; in my opinion; one of the greatest Superman movies; of all time. This movie was so ahead of its time; & it has something for everyone; that is young; & old at heart. And that fantastic score from the great John Williams; who was beginning to take the movie industry by storm with his epic music; at that time. But most importantly; Christopher Reeves’s, performance as Clark Kent / Superman ( who was an unknown at the time ); was the glue; that kept that movie running; like a fine oiled machine; from beginning to end. Superman 2; was a great follow up; with Terrance Stamp as General ZOD. Three more sequels followed which were not as good; but Henry Cavill put the character back on track; with the Man Of Steel *. Finally; I could only give this disc four stars; instead of five; because the transfer of this movie did not transfer well to 4K. Which is not its fault. The technology had not been invented; when this movie was made. Other than that; I was very happy to put this classic into my film collection.

This review is of the technical aspect of this movie and not the subject matter. This was the first commercial movie I ever bought in 1979. It was a Beta Video Tape. It cost $60 then. I still have the tape and a working Betamax. Of course 4K is like night and day over video tape. I have seen this movie on TV which is a great improvement over the tape. I found the 4k HDR to be very well done. Colors are rich and sharpness is great for a 45 year old movie. I have seen a lot worse conversions of older movies. I got this movie on sale and it is a great addition to my collection.

    Excellent 4K restoration

This is not a review of the movie but rather a personal review of the 4k restoration. When Superman: The Movie was first made the green screen technology did not exist to correct the shift in colors. Hence, Superman's costume varied through the movie. For the 4k restoration Donner painstakingly supervised the color correcting of the problem areas and enhanced the audio. This is the best Superman has ever looked or sound. While the image is slightly sharper, it retains the soft film grain look of all previous formats.

This film remains my favorite superhero flick -- The Dark Knight is my second favorite. I remember seeing the film in the late 70's with my father & brother. Such a massive production, helmed by the legendary Richard Donner. Such a great cast: Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Ned Beatty, Margo Kidder, etc. Everyone is perfect! Cannot forget the memorable score by John Williams!!! It's a fun and incredible film with a lot of heart...and no CGI :) I envy people who see this film for the first time. It's a classic and a treat. -Movie Nerd

Taking into consideration this movie is more than 40 years old, the 4 K transfer adds a few details I hadn’t noted before. As any other old movie there will be some grain that will be hard to take off, but this just brings character to the movie. The Smallville scene is the only scene that seemed to be too bright. The Atmos track is pretty well done and brings out the score like you have never heard it before. The scene of Krypton’s destruction is what I fiund to be the most enjoyable Atmos part in the movie.

Just before the destruction of the planet Krypton, scientist Jor-El (Marlon Brando) sends his infant son Kal-El on a spaceship to Earth. Raised by kindly farmers Jonathan (Glenn Ford) and Martha Kent (Phyllis Thaxter), young Clark (Christopher Reeve) discovers the source of his superhuman powers and moves to Metropolis to fight evil. As Superman, he battles the villainous Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), while, as novice reporter Clark Kent, he attempts to woo co-worker Lois Lane (Margot Kidder).

I owned this set on DVD. While it did look good at the time, it was time to upgrade to the Blu-ray version. While the special visual effects don't quite hold up as well as modern green screened features, it is one of those movies that you have to enjoy for what it is. I think great work was done to bring all of the extra footage together & have it mesh so well with the the theatrical version. Of course there was not much the could do with the Special Edition, sound-wise, since it was primarily a TV release with low quality playback in those late 70's. I enjoyed the first 2 movies, especially the Richard Donner cut of Superman II. The rest of the series were stinkers.

This is the best that Superman: The Movie has ever looked on home video. The picture quality is outstanding for a movie of this age. The producers of Superman: The Movie understood the character and is wonderfully portrayed by Christopher Reeve. Lossy Dolby audio is chosen by default. Switch to lossless Dolby Atmos which sounds much better. If your sound system does not support Dolby Atmos, it will play the Dolby True core audio.

This is it - the one that started it all. Fitting, after all the character started the superhero genre in comics back in 1938 and so it makes sense that he would continue to lead his brethren through various media including radio (where “up up and away as well as the flying powers came from), animation, live action TV, stage musicals (well, that wasn’t so great but it is there…) and finally…the big silver screen. Superman the Movie in 1978 gets a wee bit overlooked in history since it came after Jaws (first blockbuster), Star Wars and before Indiana Jones and ET. But Superman was every bit the powerhouse that all of those were and it was a HUGE hit christmas 1978. For the first time, audiences were treated to (and embraced) the storytelling of comic books on a big screen with honestly, integrity and verisimilitude (if that is not a known term for you, make sure to watch the excellent making of documentary on this set’s special edition disc). This wasn’t a comic book, it was real (as real as the movies get anyway) and the acting, special effects, action, excitement and heart of the film soared (yes, Superman pun) and swept up audiences with it. A sidebar…if you want to know just how impactful this movie was, google the news stories about Christover Reeve’s tragic accident, and the reaction to it…then the reaction to how heroic he chose to live the remainder of his life and then his final passing…the emotion with people who knew him as Superman demonstrates the effect that this movie had…) Ok, back to this set. The theatrical edition of Superman the Movie is not here. If that’s what you want, seek out the excellent 4K disc. But what is here is just as important. This contains two separate cuts of the movie. The first cut is the special edition, which was released in 2000. This ISN’T the travesty that purists will say even though…yes, there are new audio effects. Yes, there are new special effects. Yes, it’s a “special edition” following the Star Wars special editions in 1997 (anything that makes money) but unlike Star Wars, Superman IS available in its original form as well. So this version can comfortably exist (and it’s the first time that Superman’s green suit was color corrected to blue…a sidebar issue from the blue screen processes used in the special effect creation). This special edition, and it’s special features, have been available on DVD and Blu Ray previously. They are no different than what appeared before in the anthology or dvd sets. The REAL gem of this set, though, is the second cut of the movie included…the three hour ABC tv cut. Is this this best version of the movie…depends on how you evaluate it. For many, this may be the first version they saw. There’s love of nostalgia at play. For others, more is always going to equate to better…and this version has more. From a storytelling in a visual medium perspective, this may not be the best version as some scenes are not as tightly edited, some effects drag down the more realistic tone of the film (kryptonian sentries, looking at you) and some scenes are just downright silly (sorry giant alligators in the sewers…lol). That said, a restored TV cut of a beloved film on blu ray that has never before been available outside of its early eighties broadcasts? Oh please…if you are a comic book loving moviegoing fan than you know you want this. Like other films that have restored the extended TV edits (most recently, Kong 76), Superman The Movie: Extended Cut is a true gem and its availability is a gift to casual and collecting movie fans alike. The restoration is quite good considering the age of the film and technology used to create it. In this era of comic book films dominating the box office, revisiting the original film that started it all in a brand new, nearly never seen version is something exciting. Turn on those large high definition screens, gather friends or family (safely, pandemic times still persist) and pop up a large tub of popcorn (preferably buttery and not healthy…lol) and head back to a time before CGI moviemaking to once again believe…a man CAN fly. Highest possible recommendation Miss Tessmacher!

Finally, the version I had been waiting for. Th original theatrical version remastered in 4K. Superman-The Movie has never looked better. Yes, it's an older title and the age of the film shows in the transfer in some of the scenes, but overall it looks superb. This goes for the sound too. Nice stereo separation and noticeable surrounds.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. While this doesn't look as good as your normal modern 4K release due to the age and filming techniques of the time it was made, this is still the best the movie has ever looked. Color especially benefits from Dolby Vision. The sound is near perfect.

This isn't exactly 4k eye candy due to how the movie was shot and the cinematographer's general style, but it's a fantastic release. Noticed a few small things I had never seen before. The atmos mix sounds like it came from a brand new movie. Great sound.

in my eyes this is the original, the greatest version of Superman of our time. Christopher Reeve is the classic Superman that everybody knows and loves and this movie started it all.
