    System Keeps Crashing

    Posted
    sarmay

We bought the $399 TCL Roku 55" television for Christmas (bought in November, but Delivered December 22). The television worked great for the first three months. About two weeks ago, it crashed. The screen went to the opening red Roku screen, then would flash off, then back to the red screen again, then flash off again, over and over. We did everything we could find: removed the batteries from the remote, unplugged, and replugged, and ended up doing a hard reset to factory settings several times with TCL support on the phone. After HOURS of this, the television finally rebooted to factory settings, and we had to reinstall all of our apps. Last week (one week after this hard reset), Hulu logged us out. I assumed it was a Hulu thing because the other apps were still working. Then last night, it flashed/crashed/flashed/crashed again. We tried doing the hard reset, unplug, replug, steps again, but it didn't work. We tried calling support, but they were closed because we live on the West Coast. I would steer clear of this television. We're going to be talking to Best Buy about a return so that we can get a reliable television.

I was excited after all the good reviews and the price. I got my TV, set up was easy and all was great. A week after getting it streaming stopped working. I called TCL support and they were helpful and had me reset a few settings. All was good for 10 minutes and then once again couldn't stream anymore. Again, the internet connection could not be found. I called support again and ran through several diagnostic test. The TV is under warranty but they want 4 different pictures of the tv, a copy of the receipt and serial number. I sent all that in and got a email that stated they were reviewing my claim and they would let me know if it fell under warranty in 7 to 10 days. On my next day off I think I am just going to Best Buy to see if I can return it.

This TV was purchased and picked up 9/17/2017.... I did not start using it until my new home was built January 2018.... The TV started flickering and getting lines across the top of it before 2/11/19 and on that date I recorded a video that clearly shows the TV has an issue.... I talked to BestBuy this morning on 3 calls to them and also to TCL and each of the calls ended with we cannot help you since you did not purchase the 40 dollar warranty.... I have spent thousands of dollars with BestBuy over the past 2 years and will be shopping somewhere else from now on over a 40 dollar warranty.... I have another TCL in my bedroom and it is 3 years old and works fine but this particular TV is a lemon that BestBuy will not backup even though I am an ELITE MEMBER...........

    Roku, Get it Together

Okay, I would love this TV if not for the awful, unintuitive home screen. The UI is outdated, super awkward, and most importantly, it has advertisements. Why are there ads on something that I paid full price for? Why are there obtrusive, massive portions of the screen dedicated to "start your free trial today"? Why is the TV remote an advertisement for Netflix, Hulu, and other providers? Why, why, why a lot of things. Roku has seriously screwed me over with this TV. I hate advertisements -- it's just another waste of data and an intrusive way of tracking your activity down. I'm very tempted to return it just because there are advertisements that I can't remove on a TV I paid full price for.

Was ok until it wasn't, which ended up being about four weeks. The sound was terrible and I noticed it shutting itself off several times but didn't think anything of it. Last night it shut itself off and that was it. It wouldn't turn on no matter what I tried. I called customer service and they said I'd receive an email for a tech to come out and inspect it. I haven't heard from anyone yet. I've never had a problem with a TV before this. I feel that the company should just replace a new TV that's only a few weeks old and dead. I ended up buying a new TV already and went back to a more trusted brand, Samsung. My advise is to not be tempted by the price and pay a little more for more reputable brand. At the very least buy the extended warranty.

A warning on buying a TCL 65 Roku TV

After receiving my TCL 65" Roku TV and turning it on, it showed a crack in the glass and the big black circle at the bottom of the screen, I called TCL as they showed a Warranty of a year. The guy had me do tests on it for over 1 hour, then it would not even work anymore. I had to send many pictures of the bad flaw, they now tell me that the warranty does not cover this as it promised in their AD. You will regret buying a TCL TV. My rating on this is a big 0. Don't buy one. Now to see if Best Buy will replace it with a different brand. Now my many relatives and friend that wanted to see if it was as good as advertised, not one of them will buy a TCL. REMEMBER, YOU HAVE BEEN WORN OF THIS BAD TV AND BAD WARRANTY SERVICE FROM TCL!

      Hi Troykoo,

At TCL, all of our TVs and packing are designed to withstand the rigors of shipping, but sometimes things happen that are out of our control. We take great measures to ensure that the TVs we send out are in great working condition. Regrettably, physical damage would not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. In the event that you received a damaged product, it would be handled by the retailer. Best of luck!

I had a few problems with this tv.. 1) even using a ethernet cable it was slow streaming and buffering constantly. My last tv never had to buffer anything ever. (Vizio) 2) randomly resetting itself while your watching it! No kidding. Its embarrassing to host a superbowl party and have this happen. Trust me. 3) pathetic durability. 5 min ago my 3 year old shot a nerf dart at it from roughly 20 ft away. Boom broke. And I couldn't be happier about a broken tv.

We're truly sorry to hear about your experience as this is definitely not normal for one of our TVs. Our TVs are carefully designed and engineered to give our customers years of entertainment. Had this TV die on me within 5 months. While occasionally the TV would not start but after a few times start on pressing the remote all of a sudden, it was chugging along ok for a while. Luckily , had the Geek Squad protection. I was refunded back the money with pro-rated GS plan applied and used that to buy Insignia Roku 55" HDR TV which was on sale for 349. Thus gaining 35$ Gift card. Compared to a 2 year old Hisense 50" 4K TV I found picture quality better in HSNSE but Roku ecosystem being far superior with the world of TV smart apps though it is missing the browser. Also the settings part of the ROKU TV is somewhat basic compared to more expansive HSNSE software.

Horrible video quality compared to other brands for the price. Sound is decent (worth the price.) TCL had to come replace a part 4 months after purchase, and again the SAME part a year lately and now i'm out of warranty. This was a known defect they stated and still wanted to replace it so i'm sure i'm about to go through hoops to get them to take care of this honestly. I would highly recommend coughing up the extra money so you don't end up RENTING a low quality TV but buying a good one that will LAST years. Not 6 months, that's a big red flag.

I bought my 55" in 2017 and it was working great! I chose to buy the 65" as well. Recently my 55" lost the picture and only had sound. I did all of the resets recommended in TCL's site. I sat for what seemed like hours turning the TV on and off. Eventually it got a picture. Now, the picture is completely gone. Warranty has obviously expired. Now to find a new TV or find a repair man to fix the TV? Ugh! Not cool TCL! My Coby TV ran for the longest time. Less than 2 years and this TV is junk!!!

After having my TCL for only two years, my TV is not able to stream movies. I called TCL to trouble shoot my TV and they told me that I have a defective TV and that my mother board and wi fi board is defective. Since I don't have an extended warranty, they won't fix it. They wouldn't even send a repair man and service their defect. How dare this be my problem since it's their defect. How dare them sell me a TV that doesn't last more than 24 months. Don't buy this TV unless you want to waste your money!!!

I bought this TV to replace a nearly decade old plasma model, Black Friday, etc... Got it home and was pleased. At under $400 I was very happy. Cut to Jan 1st, loud pop and a black screen, surge protector not blown and everything else is just fine, TKO on the tv though. Thankfully with the holiday return policy I can return and avoid using the manufacturers warranty(parts and labor.) All this being said... I enjoyed the tv for the two months that it worked, though I'd recommend protection on this one.

This is a fantastic TV when operating properly. It is a purchase where you get a great "bang for your buck" -- the 4k resolution, sleek design, and ROKU capabilities are all very impressive. However, the television eventually began experiencing problems and now the screen will not display anything. I understand bad luck, but this problem appears to be widespread. There are countless online forum posts about this issue with TCL televisions. The fix for the problem typically involves a new part and/or a technician to work on the television.

This device did not work properly out the box. There was a bright light that would come on and then the tv did not respond. I thought this was just the tv being slow and it took some time to come on for that price. Then it happened for days at a time. The company that makes the tv has terrible customer service that advised me to take the device to a repair shop to get it fixed. I had the tv almost a year when this has been happening out the box. I would stick with Westinghouse or Vizio if your looking for cheap but good.

I must say buying this TV was a mistake. 1. The remote has no numbers. NO NUMBERS??? Meaning that one has to scroll through all the channels to get to the one you want. 2. Set-up takes hours because of AWFUL PROGRAMMING. Roku forces the user to sit through the download of 63 paid/streaming channels whether you want them or not. They ask and demand answers to personal questions about your household. There is no escape from this endless nonsense. I don't care how good the picture is. DO NOT BUY this waste of time.

Sorry for your frustration with your tv. You should know that during the set up process, you can select which streaming channels (Amazon, Netflix, YouTube. Etc) are installed On your TV. The typical set up process typically 10 to 15 minutes.., You can simply remove them with just a few keystrokes. Hope that helps. If you have any questions, we are here to help.
