Misleading Advertising and Lack of Basic Features

If you picked up this TV, you probably did so because you wanted a 4K TV with HDR, and this was advertised as such. My intention was to use 4K and HDR for a Playstation 4, but this TV does not come with HDR by default. The only way to get HDR for it that I could find is by connecting to the internet. Trying to turn on HDR in devices before connecting just gives the message, "this TV does not support HDR." The TV lacks the option to set a Static IP, something even a 10 year old printer can do so there is just no excuse for this basic option to be missing. If you do connect it to the internet then you decide to disconnect the tv from your network when not using the network features, they start flashing the Power LED non-stop until you reconnect it. The only way to permanently stop the flashing is to do a factory reset, which takes you right back to having no HDR.

Sorry for the frustration you’re having with your TV. You should know that connecting to the network has nothing to do with the ability of the TV to receive and display HDR and Dolby Vision contact. You would want to make sure that you go into the settings on the TV and in sure that the TV input to which have connected your game console is set to HDMI 2.0. That will ensure that you can receive and display 4K HDR content. You may also need to enable it on your game console. Hope that helps, TCL support

    horrible experience

I had to get two replacements from TCL due to dark edges. They tried to play it off as a "vignette effect" which is just another term for cheap, low quality panel. HDR was horribly dark, and this thing doesn't pass a DTS signal. Soooooo if you pop in a blu-ray that is enoded in DTS, it won't play audio through the soundbar if you're hooked up through arc. You'd have to get a soundbar with a 4k HDR passthrough if you want to play DTS encoded blu-rays with any TCL Roku TV or any 4k HDR UHD discs encoded in DTS. And you WILL need a soundbar with the thing bc the included speakers are terrible. Just know that your TV can't pass a DTS signal from a blu ray player to the soundbar via the ARC so what good is it?

Unfortunately after the warranty expired pixels started to die after 2 years and 1,195 hours on the tv it is near useless, I do not think it is reasonable to expect a consumer to replace a tv after two years... tcl also has subpar customer service

    The Big Miss

I bought this TV based on great reviews and the low price. The picture quality is very good. However sound is horrible. It seemed like sound was coming out from a tin can! No kidding! This is why I call my review The Big Miss. One more thing, When I first press the power button then I have to use the TV remote to connect to Direct TV. After that I can use my Direct TV remote control. That's bad. I should not need to use two remote controls. Withe the old TV and my new LG OLED I only use the Direct TV remote. Speaking of which there is a vast difference in picture and sound quality Between The TCL and the LG OLED. Of course there is a big difference in price as well. You get what you pay for (most of the time.)

Did you know that under the power settings, you can program the TV to turn on directly to your DirecTV HDMI input rather than to the home screen? That should make for a better experience.

Sorry the sound was not up to your expectations.

Returned item and switched brand. The picture was not even close to what I saw on display. I tried many adjustments/settings but was not happy with the picture. Maybe I just had a bad unit but was not in the mood to try again.

I purchased this TV and returned it within 24 hours. I know some people have had great experiences with this TV but read it suffers from poor quality control and I got a bad model. The display had a large band that was took about 1/3 of the upper screen that was damaged. There was also significant backlight bleeding - I could see light pouring out from the side/back of TV. If you do purchase this device, make sure you look closely to make sure the unit is damaged after purchase.

The TV is a week old and the screen has gone white, vague outline of picture, of course this happened when the whole family was gathered around for movie night, one hour after i moved the old one downstairs. Support tells me to box it back up and return to store. Hoped it would be as good as these other reviews and it was a pretty good picture while it worked (for a week), maybe its a lemon, but this is very dissapointing when your new TV dies after a week, it seems the adage "you get what you pay for" may be true in this instance, will update my review once replacement in place and working for at least a month.

All the hype is true... Seriously

If you are reading this review, you are probably like me and really do your research before making a larger purchase, like a tv. I will not repeat stats and specs, like so many reviews on here do. By now you have probably already seen the reviews on rtings, cnet, techreview, pcmag, the verge, the wirecutter etc. For the most part they are glowing reviews, basically it's because of how much tech and quality you get for the price. Had this tv a week. Have done calibrations, played around with settings. Watched all kinds of content. Bottom line, this TV truly is exactly what they say it is. I will be buying a second one in a couple weeks. Just know that you should researh calibration settings and other settings and really take the time to get it to know and adjust it for your eye and particular usage. Otherwise you really miss out on what it's capable of doing. Just buy it, PERIOD! It is truly amazing, and the value you get is unparalleled. It is actually very rare in the tech world to see such a no brainer value. I will just come out and say what the review sites are almost afraid to definitively utter. This TV, when properly calibrated, has no real competition until you get to about the $1200 range. That is not an exaggeration. If you are planning on doing a lot of gaming or intend to watch mostly 4K and HDR content, then it's more like the $1500 range. That's just the truth! Not only will you not regret it, but it will give you a satisfaction that you made an incredibly smart buy. It's an absolute steal! Buy it!

This TV has quit working 2 years and 2 months, and 3 days after we purchased it. And, based on internet searches, this is a known issues with Sharp TV's. Never again will I buy this brand. This is simply stupid. It was in the bedroom and I would bet it was watched for maybe 200 hours TOPS. Very disappointed. I hope Best Buy quits carrying this brand.

Thinking it would perform optimally because, you know, 4K UHD with HDR... I was wrong. The reviews must be paid for, because this tv is trash. Why am I constantly having picture blackouts? Like the TV is constantly trying to adjust and refresh itself at the expense of my viewership. Best value as of 12/2017

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This 5 stars is based on the price/value. You simply won't find better in the sub-$1000 range. This model from TCL far and away beats their similarity priced other models as well as competing brands. Don't read this review and think it all applies to the TCL S or C series. It is not as good as some $1000+ 55" sets BUT it is better than some. Especially if you are looking for Dolby Vision (enhanced HDR), Dolby Atmos (enhanced surround sound), ARC (channel sound from the TV to your AV receiver, even Atmos) or local dimming. Many of these are still rare on other brands for hundreds of dollars more. Brightness is very strong and I've tested HDR (and Dolby Vision) movies, Netflix Series, and games and the picture is equal to all other 55" sets I've seen. There are some compromises with this unit. Unfortunately TCL cancelled the other sizes of this series (50" & 65"). The cheap plastic bezel providing very little support for the panel. Treat it with kid gloves when unboxing or setting up as any pressure on the screen may cause back light bleeding to get worse and even cause flashlight effects. I had to return my first unit due to uneven backlight bleed. That goes to the other major compromise. As with many VA LCD panels with local dimming (vs. IPS which does better with this and OLED which doesn't need it) ... the backlight will have minor fading / gradation. As mentioned my first unit was very uneven. The replacement was acceptable. While it isn't as good as IPS and not near OLED it is what I expected from the VA panel. You'll see a smooth vignette effect (darkening towards the edges and corners) on solid dark grey but it isn't a problem for 99% of videos. If you want to test yours, turn OFF Local Contrast under Advanced Picture Settings (if you don't then you'll think you have perfect blacks, just turn it back on to High when done testing) and find a video on YouTube with the search terms "backlight bleed". With Local Contrast off you'll see the black screen is dark grey towards the middle of the screen. What you want to make sure is that the gradation is smooth with no major off-center hot spots. Ham fisted handling or screen impacts can definitely cause the backlight bleed to become irregular and ruin the picture. A stronger bezel and glass would help prevent this. There may be a bit of a "panel lottery" on this unit. The Best Buy model is the P605 ... everyone else sells the P607 for $50-100 more. While they are meant to be identical except the remote on the P607 adding a headphone port, it is also plausible to me that the P605 may get the lesser end of the panel lottery. However being able to pick it up locally, test and return if needed meant I preferred the P605 over ordering the P607 via mail. Given the price, you're going to compromise a bit with this, but ONLY on the backlight uniformity and bezel issues already noted. Otherwise everything on this unit is performing flawlessly. Colors are vibrant, easy to calibrate (hint: you can get to the calibration via the Roku smart phone app under Settings / Expert Settings, allowing you to tune all color channels, gamma, noise reduction, etc ... these settings aren't available from the TV remote but ARE available and can be configured per TV picture mode). You can also find basic calibration settings on Rtings.com (I'm not affiliated).

These TCL TV's have major issues in a few years after the warranty is over. Mine just stopped turning on and it seems to be a very common issue after a lot of Googling. Can't believe my Dad's tube TV in the basement works 20 years later but a $700 new HDR TV stops working after 2.
