I purchased this TV on March 1, 2024. Within six weeks a spot appeared on the screen (first picture). By late May the defect became more noticeable (second and third pictures). I opened a warranty claim with TCL (see below response from TCL). It said it was a bug in the screen and therefore not warrantable. TCL never offered to have someone physically inspect the TV and made its determination based on the attached pictures. I should have reviewed BBB as I see TCL has a history of declining warranty coverage on its TVs. Do yourself a favor and do not buy any TCL TV. It does not back its warranty. Thank you for reaching out to us and we appreciate your effort in sending us the requested documents. Upon further evaluation, we regret to inform you that the manufacturer's warranty does not extend to cover issues related to insects inside the panel of the TV. The warranty is specifically designed to address defects in materials or workmanship, and unfortunately, the presence of insects does not fall under this coverage. We understand that this situation may be frustrating, and we apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. You can visit https://www.tcl.com/us/en/warranty/tv-warranty to find more information on our warranty requirements and limitations. We highly recommend contacting a certified technician to check if there are any openings or gaps around your TV or to check the retailer you purchased from to see if they cover this type of issue with the TV. Additionally, if you purchased an extended warranty, you may want to reach out to see if you can file a warranty claim through the extended warranty. Warmest regards, April B. I bought this to replace my 12 year old Mitsubishi 92-inch DLP. I paid $2,800 for the DLP when I bought it. I read all the reviews I could find for this 98 inch TCL since I've never bought this brand. There were/are very few reviews. I especially focused on negative reviews since oftentimes 5-star reviews are rigged by the manufacturer. There are reviews on here that scared me, talking about horrible/faded picture quality, or having to pay extra to watch in 4K resolution?? Hah? I took a risk and bought it anyways since I had 30-60 days to return it if I didn't like it. All I say is WOW! Movies and PS5 games look amazing. I don't know if I simply got lucky and got a good quality LED screen, or if the 1-star reviews are from competitors. The picture quality is amazing, high contrast, bright, rich colors, and the most surprising...excellent black levels once you adjust it. I watched scenes where the entire screen is white and there was zero DSE, no missing pixels. It was bright, very even, white across the screen. I'm still in shock. I was considering TCL 98 QM8 with dimming zones, as well as other brands. Looking back, why would I or anyone else pay $6000 to $25,000 for dimming zones when this TV is absolutely gorgeous. I've recommended it to all my jealous friends and family. Make sure you adjust the temperature setting from warm to cool in order to get whiter whites. Also, adjust black levels if black colors looks grayish/blueish. I also turned off Dolby Vision IQ which auto-adjusts brightness based on ambient light. Lastly, buy the best high-speed cables you can afford. I'm using Fusion8K HDMI 2.1 Certified cables. They're well worth it. If you get skipping video or audio, poor quality picture, lines missing, blinking black screen, etc. it's the cable. Remember these TVs are digital. They're sending digital data at an extremely high rate (throughput). If data gets dropped/missing, you will end up with problems.

This TV more than exceeded my expectations. At $2000 with free delivery, installation, 0% financing for 2 years and a 14 day return policy, it seemed like a no-brainer. So, while none of these 98 inch units were on display anywhere near me to check out before hand, I decided to go for it. It arrived on time and the Geek guys did a fine job of mounting the massive unit on my wall with the appropriate mount that I provided. They checked to make sure it turned on and then left, leaving the rest for me to figure out. So, I spent that afternoon learning about my new TV and the Google operating system that manages it. After some tinkering, I got the picture to look absolutely stunning. In fact, it far out performs my 82 inch Samsung Q70r QLED in most respects. First off, the mere size of it is overwhelming visually. The colors are fabulous and I find the contrast between light and dark to be excellent, providing a certain depth of field that is beautiful. Blacks are pretty black and with the picture being cast over such a large surface, it seems plenty bright enough too. In fact, most of the time I have the Brightness set to 75/100 and the Contrast at 90/100 in Movie mode. As with my Q70, brightness suffers some in HDR, but it does adjust to that to the degree possible. That is true with Dolby Vision as well. I am not a big fan of HDR in any case, so at times I just turn it off and the picture looks fine without it. I highly recommend spending some time with all of the various available settings to settle on a picture that is most satisfying to you, as it does offer a lot of visual options to choose from. Moreover, the sharpness and clarity provided by this unit is truly impressive, even from my cable box feed of broadcast TV shows and sports. 4K apps are even more amazing. I do not have much to say about the internal speakers as I have a 5.1.4 Vizio Soundbar to complete the immersive visual and audio package. Unfortunately, from the beginning I had problems with the TCL not passing thru DD, DD+ or Atmos via ARC. In fact, the only audio detected on my Vizio app from the TV was LPCM, which while high quality, is only stereo. I contacted TCL Support and over the next month they worked hard to find the problem. In the end, they sent out a local independent technician to install a complete new set of innards for my unit. I mean they replaced every electronic piece inside that beast except for the panel itself. They did their job quickly and efficiently, checking to make sure that it fired up before they left. While it was a lengthy process, most of the TCL Support folks I worked with were pleasant, courteous and generally knowledgeable. After providing camera shots and videos of the issue, the case was escalated to the next Level and that Rep authorized the repair after some more investigation. After a bit more assistance following the repair, the Soundbar and the TV are now in sync and the smile has grown even bigger on my face. No more LPCM, but happily Dolby Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and Atmos as appropriate. I did my own research during this process and I did not find anyone else having the problem I encountered. Accordingly, I am assuming it was an isolated problem and not at all symptomatic of the S5 in general. The fact that TCL worked long and hard to resolve my issue is a tribute to their emergence as a significant player in the US mid-TV market with technology that is becoming top notch at reasonable prices. Their support in my case was pretty top notch as well. Lastly, in no way does this TV feel, look, sound or act like a low-end product. With its current generation Direct LED Backlit panel and its amazing next gen processor, it compensates dramatically for its lack of local dimming and other QLED technologies to the point that they are not missed in normal viewing. In any case, other 98 inch TVs with those technologies cost at least double what this TCL did, not to mention what a 98 inch OLED would cost. So to me there's not even a discussion to be had about comparing a TV experience that is very, very good and affordable to what might be an excellent experience with a TV that I cannot afford. Like I said, a no-brainer!

I have a dedicated home theater room complete with a Awol 3500 projector on a 130 inch screen. The picture was nice , but I like the TV look. When I saw this TV on sale I jumped on it. The picture quality is outstanding especially HDR content. The projector just couldn't do HDR the right way. The picture quality on this Tv especially for the price is outstanding. Rich, bright and vibrant colors. I barely miss the projector screen size because the picture quality on this Tv is so much better. In my opinion, there is no need to spend 10 grand on a 98 inch tv because of a brand name. This TV is the best bang for the buck when you factor in screen size, quality and price.

I didn't even know that I was in the market for a TV until this popped up in my feed. The price at $1999 was unbelievable and I was curious about how this large TV would function, especially for standard TV shows. I read up a lot on home theater forums and other sites and noticed that the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Of course, there were "purists" who downgraded this TV for not being a QLD or OLED screen and not having local dimming. TV's with those features were way more expensive. The TV was delivered 3 days later, I got the free wall installation by the Geek Squad (a must do). They were amazing! I recommend the Human Centric wall mount, due to the unique 600mmX500mm VESA pattern. The TV is awesome! It replaced a 75" Sony in the living room with bright windows. We have no issues watching TV during daytime. The magic happens at night when we watch our favorite shows. The standard 1080P signals are upscaled to near 4K by the 3rd generation engine and they look great. 4K signals are where the TV shines. Disney, Netflix & Amazon movies and shows and the 8K youtube channel look great. With respect to black levels: We watched the Netflix show "Blown Away", a glass blowing competition, where there are many dark scenes and we had no issues with the black levels. We have this connected to a Vizio 5.1.4 soundbar via ARC and we had some issues with Dolby Atmos initially. After unplugging and replugging all power and HDMI cables, it went away.we have no Overall, we love this TV and at the $1999 price tag, this is a no brainer if you are looking for a large format TV.

We purchased this TV to replace our 9yr old Epson 5030ub projector which strangely enough was only 1080p max but has better processing and Showed clearer than this TV. Unfortunately there were no showroom models in our area and not many YouTube reviews or written reviews on this set so we took a chance. A 98” TV at this price point sounded like a great deal. The TV is very bright and looks great when running native 4K well lit images however the processing and the backlighting is where this TV picture quality falls apart. If you arent a stickler for things like clear sharp image processing, deep blacks and smooth motion this TV will be excellent for you. We watch a mostly streaming services, YouTube, and YouTubeTV like i think most people do so it was essential for the TV to be able to upscale well (which its not). If you are a person who wants deep blacks, smooth motion, and a sharp clear image I suggest looking at another TV. Just for reference our main TV is a 85” Samsung QN90B and while its not perfect its a very good TV. I even had a vistitor tell me “this tv is clearer than my eysight in real life” lol. Anyways, That is the TV we were using as our quality control for this TCL TV. We had it for 10 days and i tried giving it a chance. We Played around with the settings as much as we could but eventually we have decided to swap for the Hisense 85” U8K ULED with local dimming like our samsung and better processing than our Samsung. *********. Unrealted to the TV review. if you’re getting this mounted by geek squad you need to make sure to get a mount that can be screwed to 2 studs in your wall. Ours are 24” apart and our mount base was only 18” wide. They refused to mount the TV. I just used the 1 stud and 6 200lbs wall anchors and did it myself. Tv weighs 125lbs. I weigh 230 and could stand on it.

For the price and size, the picture quality is amazing when viewing straight on. Off axis viewing is washed out some what. Still I am happy with the size and picture for $3000. I have 3 LG OLED tv's, so that makes me pretty picky. To get an OLED this size would be $25000, so I can't justify the cost difference. Compared my LG 4K laser projector, the TLC is much better at the same size image.

I researched 98" TV's and the unobtainable 100" Hisense for at least a month. When this TCL price fell to $2499 for Black Friday w/free delivery and mounting, I had to take the risk (even though there really weren't any in-depth reviews on this model.) And, I'm glad I did .. even though, I'm sure the higher priced models will have better black levels and contrasts, this TV is very impressive in a BIG WAY for such a relatively low price. 4k movies look amazing and watching football is incredible! Streaming Youtube videos also look fantastic when viewing in 720p or better. I've only owned this set for a week, but I plan on really enjoying this TV for at least 2 or 3 years, then moving on to a higher quality picture when the now 6k to 8k TV's drop down to 3k or less.

    1) TCL 98 is Massive look. I mounted 36 inches from the bottom of the floor and with viewing distance 22FT in my living and its Exactly Fits my Large TV requirments. 2) This TV replaced 65in SAMSUNG NEO QLED 95B and that the best TV ever made. However due to the size and Brightness it had solved my Large TV Purpose. 3) Unlike samsung, we cant view from sides( Greater than 140 degress). The best view comes from Straight/infront. 4) sound is good, however i connected to 5.1 channel. 5) Value for money 1999 with FREE installation/ mount from BEST BUY and its a great deal. The best buy REPS really impressed me. They are on time, removed my old tv, mounted and cleaned the dirt. 5 STAR to BESTBUY GEEK SQUAD. They even recommended me the height for my viewing distance and cant thank them enough. 6) Google TV is a mess. I didnt like it. Too much of nonsense 7) I am returning this TV, because my soul was always for Hisense 100 in Q76 and i got that TV after installation for the same price. Since Hisense is QLED, i am up for that 2in and better tech. 8) After using hisense for 2 weeks( now) and also TCL for 2 weeks ( in early feb 2024) , I feel Both are same and my heart says TCL has slight edge than Hisense in terms of image quality...... I feel Both are same, since hisense u76 its a good buy to get TCL98S5. There is nothing you guys are missing if you dont get hi-sense as i feel both image quality is same. Most of my content is Movies 4k/ SPORTS and youtube video songs. P.S : I am not a person who is particular about blacks/RED's and doesnt check every bit of colors ( i dont care as i have Q95B). All i care about is SIZE and massive theatre experience and this TV will SOLVE the purpose.

Really nice TV. I am surprised by the black levels on this TV, they aren't OLED but pretty good. I have always owned a Sony TV so this is my first TCL, I was skeptical about the picture quality and features but I am pleasantly surprised by the performance of this TV. As for mounting this big boy, just got to amazon and get a mount, the mounts that best buy sold me did not work with this TV, This TV shines in native 4k content, it does struggle somewhat with upscaling lower quality content but I doubt anyone will be using this TV to watch 480p videos.

I was watching this tv for a while and read all of the reviews. Finally, I pulled the trigger and bought this massive tv to complete my home theater. I was torn between this tv and a projector and screen, but I made the right choice for the price and size. It was heavy but we managed to hang it on the wall. You won't be disappointed with this tv. An Absolute Monster of a TV

I've now had this beast of a TV in my loft for a week and a half and it is absolutely amazing. Here are my takeaways from the TV: Delivery and Unboxing - my loft is on the second floor of my house and getting this huge TV up the stairs was a challenge to say the least. It took three of us to get it up the stairs and into the loft. Getting the TV out of the box and up and onto the custom TV stand was actually pretty easy, as it unwraps from around the TV instead of going overhead. Installing the feet was a snap and then it was a short lift to move it to the TV stand. (A note on TV stands - the feet for this TV sit over five feet apart, so finding a TV stand that fits will be difficult. My son and I ended up just custom building a stand, but an alternative would be to get a pair of matching smaller TV stands and setting them side-by-side to place the TV on. Another alternative would be to wall mount the thing. There are wall mounts for TVs this large, but I can't imagine hanging the TV without a couple of really strong, tall people.) Set up - once the TV was on the stand it was pretty straight forward to get everything connected to the TV and to run through the obligatory set up of the Google TV interface. My router was fairly close to the TV, so the wifi signal was strong and I didn't encounter any issues. The TV automatically recognized my Vizio 5.1 soundbar setup via the eARC HDMI, so there were no issues there. TV Operation - all of the major streaming services are available through the Google TV interface. Since I predominantly use Google devices, the menus were familiar, although it did take me a little trial-and-error to get the set's motion controls to where I like them. I also appreciated the Bluetooth connection for sound so that one person could use the TV without interrupting others. Movies and TV - to be 100% honest, it's just like sitting in a movie theater with a screen this large. Combine this set with a decent sound bar or surround sound system and it is outstanding. Gaming - I have my Xbox Series X hooked up to the set and I couldn't be more pleased. The TV automatically detected the Xbox and immediately set itself to Gaming Mode - 4k, 120Hz. I'm no gaming expert, but the colors and picture quality are excellent. I have no complaints. Overall, if you have the space for it and the means, I highly recommend this TV. It can be a real bear to physically move into position and there are logistical issues with either finding a stand or wall mounting it, but once it's set up and running, it's been a tremendous TV for me and my family.

You can’t beat the picture quality and size of this tv for a better price. I am happy with this TV. Most of my friends are impressed and wanna know how much it cost cause they want one for their house. It did take two to move it around in box and mount to the wall mount. Paired it with Roku Pro sound bar, sub and surround speakers. Family is familiar with the Roku streaming menus and it was easy to use this TV. Been watching the last couple weeks of NFL on it and I can’t complain.
