I remember watching this movie back when it came out on VHS and surprisingly never got any nightmares from it. Its so weird and creepy at times. And don't tell me that you didn't try and eat like the Skeksis after watching this as a kid. I love the characters and the story and since it was shot using puppets and not some weird CGI you can still watch it today without it looking weird. I was super excited that Best Buy came out with a steelbook version, the art is amazing.

This movie was ahead of its time because it used puppets instead of computer graphics, but looks really lifelike. Also, the story is a bit dark and intense, which includes death scenes, so be careful to not have little kids watch it.

Great Film with Outstanding 4K Presentation

The Dark Crystals is a great film. The puppetry is well done, the world building is very unique, the music is very majestic, and the films darkness really sets the tone for a beautiful, yet eerie world. The 4K presentation is also what makes this film worth watching. The 4K and HDR/Dolby Vision are very bright and colorful, and bring out the best lighting to help make the world of Thra look more vibrant and realistic than ever before. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re collecting 4K films.

Oh those Skeksis. An ancient race, split on this mortal coil between their good and evil sides - which will prevail? Without one another, the evil languish, and the good fade to pass... perhaps the duality of being requires all our traits? Such an epic tale stored within a little shiny spinning disc... who'd have thunk?

I remember seeing this film in the theater when it first came out and I was amazed at the action and the story. This was the 80's and it was part of a group of fantasy movies which included Willow, Legend, Beast Master and Labyrinth featuring the great David Bowie. I was also a fan of the great Jim Henson and this film was everything to me. This copy was just as nostalgic as when I watched it in the theater so many years ago and the digital transfer was amazing. I would definite recommend this to those lovers of Fantasy films from the 80's.

I remember watching this movie as a child and I have been intrigued ever since. Most people would likely not like this film, or any of Jim Hensons films, but I love them. Jim Henson is such an abstract and unique director. Seeing this in 4k was a treat!!

Classic movie that's even better restored to 4K UHD. Worth every penny for the nostalgia! I was shocked at how much better this looked than my previous blu-ray.

I had to have this for my DVD movie collection, because of the puppet mastery of Jim Hensen. The story is a dark fantasy (definitely NOT the Muppets) and the acting is sometimes a bit exaggerated, but Hensen has set the bar very high for puppetry with this movie. The characters are brought to life in ways that today's more sterile CGI can't match. It's a classic step in both puppetry and movie making.

The Dark Crystal remains a treasured classic, and for good reason, with its unusual actorless foray into high fantasy. The tone and atmosphere of the picture are unmatched and this particular release of the film on blu-ray is outstanding. Coming in a lavish digibook package and boasting a fantastic new transfer, this is the definitive version of The Dark Crystal that its every fan should own.

I had never seen this Frank Oz and Jim Henson classic, so picked it up. I watched the blu-ray, not the 4K so far. The movie is interesting and endearing even if the main 2 characters are the least believable and enjoyable part of the movie. For much of the movie, the puppetry just blows you away in terms of the intracacy of the design and the movements. The movie itself is a little slow, but I keep thinking about i so it has stuck with me. I really enjoyed some of the making of documentaries as bonus materials, which were created when the movie was being filmed back in the 1980s. Overall, I recommend this package.

These 4K and BD versions of this pre-CGI film are technically as good as they might possibly get. If you have a pulse you will be touched by this film. And it's vintage EYE and EAR candy to boot. Pre-view the film before viewing it with a child. Be mindful that the film's impacts will vary from child to child. A follow up discussion will likely be meaningful for the child AND you.

Aside for the horrific quality of the 4k transfer....This movie is great, has amazing FUNNY lines, fast action, really sets a nice pace. The sound is great, can't say enough good things about the sound, it has what you expect for the money you spend on a disk of this magnitude, the money they spent was well placed. You get high quality content. The CGI is so realistic you forget its CGI and just fall into the story and lose yourself in the emotion and staging of the drama and action. The puppets are so cool too. Much of it is not even CGI.

This is not a review of the movie itself, but of the 4k video quality. It comes with a card saying it was taken from original 35mm negatives. I watched this on a 65inch LG OLED tv. Ok this is the best the film has ever looked including the previous Blu-ray release. If you are expecting it to look as clear as something from 2017 you will be disappointed. The 1st minute of the movie before they go inside had me worried a little, but once inside you can really see the improvement. They left the natural grain(which I like) and it doesn’t seem they tried to over sharpen the film(also nice). The film is for the most part a dark film, but when colors are on the screen they really pop. The detail in the background, costumes and little hairs can be seen with great detail. There are some scenes/shots that are soft(always were) and I think that they left them alone for a reason(good choice). The sound is really good, I don’t have Atmos so I can’t say anything about how that sounds or if it is a factor. The music is full and voices are loud and clear. Is it the greatest scan ever? No, but it’s the best I think the film will ever look. The digital copy that comes with it is just the 1080p HDX version not 4K.

I first saw the Dark Crystal at around 10 years old. It was, and still is, a classic movie!! The animatronics are stellar, as is the voice acting. You will fall in love with the gelflings and will come to despise the skeksies. The blu Ray exudes the best sound and visual representation I’ve yet seen this movie in. Pick up a copy!

I was a bit concerned, I mean how much can you clean up a movie from the early 80's into present day 4K? Turns out it's quite a lot. The detail in the background, on costumes and on the puppets themselves can be seen with great detail! The colors pop and seem very vivid. It's a favorite childhood movie that looks even better.

This disc is of great value. There’s some high-quality art work/storyboards as well as insight into Henson’s vision for the film. I’ve been a fan of this film since I was a kid and have the regular DVD. This version has great resolution and sound. So if you love the Dark Crystal, you’ll love this!
