The best and goriest Evil Dead has ever looked.

Evil Dead is the 1981 original classic Sam Raimi film from the cult favorite Evil Dead and Army of Darkness franchise. This ambitious, creative horror film was produced on a legendarily shoestring budget and is in many ways darker, more twisted and dramatic than the somewhat wittier and more comedic affairs that followed it.
The 4K UHD tenders the original 4:3 aspect ratio the movie first played in. It was shot on 16mm film and this transfer goes straight to the source, which allows it to fully capitalize on the UHD format's maximum resolution. It's never looked more detailed, vivid, rich and authentically filmic at home thanks to a great transfer and new technology.
Highly recommended for any Evil Dead fan and any 4K ready horror fans. You will be surprised at how amazing it looks on a great display.

Ashley "Ash" Williams (Bruce Campbell), his girlfriend and three pals hike into the woods to a cabin for a fun night away. There they find an old book, the Necronomicon, whose text reawakens the dead when it's read aloud. The friends inadvertently release a flood of evil and must fight for their lives or become one of the evil dead. Ash watches his friends become possessed, and must make a difficult decision before daybreak to save his own life in this, the first of Sam Raimi's trilogy.

Classic low budget Horror film is to this viewers eyes, undeniably improved in 4k. The impact of this film is undeniably improved by the higher resolution 4k and big screen Tv's offer. Film like this made with low-budget now almost 30 years ago deserves some respect as it continues to draw audiences. Some of the edge is off a bit thus the 4 instead of 5 stars. Put it in perspective though, it;s a 1981 film that still has energy!! Gotta recommend this to those who love the films that get tagged supernatural horror.

The more I watch this movie, the more I like it. Saw it originally on VHS. When it was released on DVD, I had to buy it. When released on Blu Ray, I had to buy it again. Guess what? Now on 4K, yep, I have it again. Not every movie get this attention in my collection, but this one and the Evil Dead 2 does as well. Anxiously anticipating the 4K release of Army of Darkness!

I have multiple copies of Evil Dead from VHS to now 4k and this film has NEVER looked so good as it does in this release. Beautiful clarity and color making it look sort of like found footage alot of the time. It really looks terrific and is a must own if you love this film and want the best way to watch it. Very bare bones feature wise but still a must own

The Evil Dead is easily one of the best horror movies ever made! I originally found a VHS tape of it in the $5 bin at Best Buy about 20 years ago and immediately loved! I only bought it because of my Bruce Campbell fandom, and the movie only made me love him more. I haven't watched this Blu-ray yet, but I sure it's great!

I’ve seen evil dead hundreds maybe even thousands of times. When the 4K was released I had no intentions on getting it. I mean how much better could it look ? Once it dropped to $14 I took the plunge. the clarity and the colors were fantastic! It really surprised me. I would recommend it to any ED fan !

If you have doubts that a film shot on 16mm can look better on 4K than its Blu-Ray counterpart, then I recommend you purchase this new edition of "The Evil Dead."
Colors look more naturally autumnal, and their more fine detail in the gruesome make up effects.
Worth the upgrade.
Only drawback is that all the Special Features from the old Blu-Ray are not available, so you might want to hang on to the old DVD/Blu-Ray.

You can never complain about such a classic horror movie. If you are an Evil Dead fan than you will want to get it on 4k Blu Ray. Of course it still has a little graininess to it, but this is the highest quality copy you are going to get!!! Well worth the purchase price!!!!

I've had Evil Dead on almost all of the formats available... Beta, VHS, VCD, DVD, Blu-Ray, and now 4K UHD! This 4K UHD is, by far, the clearest version there is!
It's grainy, because it was originally filmed on 16mm, but the picture looks new, like a modern movie (except for the hairstyles of the cast)! The extras, we've already seen before on the DVD and Blu-Ray releases.

I DUNNO if 4K makes this better, there are scenes in which you can see cables holding the actors and detail and the makeup is pretty bad for today standards. But, the movie is a blast! is funny and engaging a total relic, great to watch with the family.

Great film, great 4k presentation. To those unfamiliar, it is SUPPOSED to be a square picture. It was originally filmed in a square format.
The only criticism I really have is that the commentary was less than stellar, and felt too 'scripted'

Evil Dead is the first film in an amazing horror trilogy. Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness are the sequels. If you are a horror film fan and haven’t seen Evil Dead, drop everything you’re doing and buy this movie. You’re going to love it!

Low budget, gory, and campy; this movie is everything one who loves 80's horror would want. More serious in tone than its sequel. The Evil Dead delivers solid shocks and gore along with a an unsettling atmosphere. Now in 4k!

This movie is, of course, a great classic. Some people won't agree, but I think it's better in 4K. Others say it makes it cheesy, but that's what I love about it. I prefer that over the technology they use in today's films.

Great Movie, Missing Features

THE EVIL DEAD is one of the extremely few movies that rightly justify a cinematic place of being both Great as well as being so Bad it's Great.
The acting from a gang of nobody newbies was largely weak, yet the gritty production values and the intensity Sam Raimi brought to the creation of a project that they worked so hard to fund - with more money than any of them had ever seen - makes THE EVIL DEAD a force to be reckoned with. Sam wanted grueling horror and he stopped at nothing to get it.
So why my two stars?
Because I adore this movie so much that I bought it with the full expectation that I would be getting the Bluray extras as advertised on this page.
To make sure I knew what I was getting myself into, I used the friendly help feature to chat with a BestBuy rep who assured me that the Extras, as advertised, would be on the disc.
She was misinformed.
You get,
All-New Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Sam Raimi, Producer Robert Tapert and Star Bruce Campbell
You Don't get,
Discovering The Evil Dead
Unconventional
At The Drive-In
Reunion Panel
Make-Up Test
The Ladies Of The Evil Dead
Meet Bruce Campbell
Book Of The Dead: The Other Pages
Still Gallery
Theatrical Trailer
TV Spots
All of that, which is plenty, is missing.
However, you also get a fistful of trailer ads to other movies that you cannot skip (but you can FF through).
This release is the cheapest, most bargain basement Bluray version of THE EVIL DEAD you can buy. If it wasn't for the forced advertising before the movie, I could at least give it a three. But being forced to deal with the ads every time I want to watch this movie is only extra aggravation, and who wants to pay for that?
If you can, buy the three disc Ultimate Edition DVD until someone better than Sony Anchor Bay releases a decent Blu / 4K.

What can you say about The Evil Dead other than it's a classic now done in 4K. The scenes are brighter in 4K which is a great improvement. The sound is very good. The one negative was no real extras.
