Mark Wahlberg is intense and compelling as a gambling-addicted university professor in suspenseful crime drama The Gambler, a slick update of a grittier 1974 James Caan movie. But his character’s self-destructive behavior strains the viewer’s sympathy almost as much as it strains that of the people around him, including his wealthy mother ( Jessica Lange), the Jewish mobster he approaches for a loan ( John Goodman), and his most talented creative writing student ( Alison Brie). ‘It’s either victory, or don’t bother’ is his attitude to life, which makes for some gripping scenes as he gets into perilous scrapes with vengeful loan sharks and Korean gangsters.

It’s was hard to know what to make of Mark Wahlberg’s character in The Gambler .
The man he plays, Jim Bennett, is a failed novelist, a self-loathing college lecturer, an overgrown trust-fund brat and an inveterate blackjack addict.
like the supporting cast ,the gangster (Michael K. Williams) loan shark (John Goodman), his semi-estranged mother (Jessica Lange) Amy (Brie Larson) a promising female student.

A Captivating View with Eccentric Characters

In the beginning the pace is slow – it’s a story of an intellectual gambler who is directionless and tends toward losing both at life and at games to a point of recklessness. The film has a great and most interesting collection of eccentric characters and Mark Wahlberg was at the top of his game demonstrating strength of character acting.

Jim Bennett (Academy Award (R)-nominee Mark Wahlberg) is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Academy Award (R)-winner Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett's future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance...

I want to say this movie didn't get great reviews, but I actually really liked it. I think it is a really good story about Mark Wahlberg's character. The weakness is of course the supporting female actress(not sure of her name). She will soon be out of movies....sorry

Mark Wahlberg is excellent in the lead role. The content of the film, however, is not the greatest. The movie drags on, and it can be difficult to maintain interest. Overall, it is still worth a watch, especially if you are a Wahlberg fan.

Overall a very good movie but unusual for Walhberg. Not the action movie he's known for but a good character study of a flawed individual with a severe gambling habit. He played a good part and showed depth as an actor.

Different role for Whalberg but pretty good none the less. Has a great scene in a classroom dealing with a speech that is given, and on the note of speeches John Goodman is excellent in this film as well!

I rate a movie like this on how well it keeps my attention. This movie stayed my attention throughout the movie. I think it was very well directed. It was a bit darker (theme) than I expected.

Mark Wahlberg presents a conceivably flawed gambler with what appears to be nothing to lose... until he realize he does. Gripping tale of addiction and how in the end, the house always wins

This is another great Wahlberg movie. It may not be as funny as movies like Ted, but he does a great job in this action movie. Great movies to watch with the boyfriend on a night at home.
