The Gunman is an underrated action movie from the director of Taken and Peppermint.

A lot of hate on Sean Penn from other reviewers. I would say most of that stems from being on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Because the writing wasn't any worse than any of the other cookie cutter Taken clones that have popped up in the last few years. Pretty gripping action, good fight scenes, and a decent cast rounds out a solid movie.

    Penn The Action Star

Going in I'll be honest I didn't know what to expect, normally I'm used to seeing Sean Penn in a drama, and he always seems to turn in a good performance, especially lately with his limited selective film roles, but with The Gunman he's placed in the lead action star role. The good news is he is successful, he acts and is believable as the mercenary he portrays. The plot is fairly original, the end climax seems a bit lackluster but thats just my own personal opinion considering the first half of the film is pretty strong. The direction and actors are all credible and well executed. This isn't Penn's best work but as a action film that could easily be missed or looked over this is one that should be given a shot.

I honestly didn't remember seeing any previews and I didn't even grab this from the "recent releases" section. It was quite a good movie. I bought it simply because I wanted a movie and when I saw Sean Penn in the starring role I hoped it would be good. I wasn't disappointed.

Sean Penn in gritty action drama

This is quite a departure for Penn as he ventures into action star territory. The movie stars Penn as a former assassin who's forced back into the black ops world when one of his former team members betrays him. Great cast includes Javier Bardem, Ray Winstone, and Idris Elba.

I have purchased many movies in the last two years before watching them and I must say do people not have creative minds anymore? I was questioning this purchase but I must say I was extremely happy with the result.

    The Gunman

Rotten Tomates had this to say: "With an uninspired plot and rote set pieces that are overshadowed by its star's physique, The Gunman proves a muddled misfire in the rapidly aging Over-50 Action Hero genre." I don't disagree, Sean looked good in this flick, but the script was pretty weak and even the best of actors (Penn, and Javier Bardem, Idris Elba), couldn't breathe any real life into it, especially the delayed "love story" angle in it. I woukd only recommend it if you get a great sales price on it.

He could play good spy, and I think he could play a real bad guy. This based on his performance in this movie. He's got the goods, if Daniel Crag can play 007, Sean could play a better spy. Maybe not 007.

Penn is back as a middle aged gunman for hire, who tries to make up for his earlier misdeeds, and ends up in something international. Almost like TAKEN, but with Africa as the back drop.

The movie was raw and gritty. I could feel the emotions of the characters as I was living it through them. The movie had some twist and turns and not the usual Hollywood fluff.

    Hunter becomes the hunted

A great depiction of a familiar story. The hunter becomes the hunted in the classic movie sense. A security contractor in Africa is dragged into the shadowy world of "Black Ops" and then the plot twists begin. No surprises there. What sets this apart is Sean Penn's performance. Penn's acting ability has been proven over several decades but he brilliantly pulls off the role of a Special Forces, Black Ops specialist seeking redemption while trying to stay alive and even holding onto a dangerous love interest.

Sean Penn is the Gunman with post concussion syndrome and is instructed to stay away from "rough sport, loud concerts, and East End pubs." so, that doesn't happen.

Sean Penn is great, as is Javier Bardem; Idris Elba steals scenes. I think the critics are too harsh. If you go in not expecting an A+, you wont be disappointed.

Much better movie than what the critics wrote about it. For an old (midage) man Mr. Penn is very fit, gives guys in their 50's to get off the bar stool.

This is not your usual Sean Penn movie, this is action packed. I didn't expect Sean to be so ripped, especially at his age...he looks 10 years younger.

In the Gunman, you're taken from one thrill ride to another. It's a relentless assault and betrayal that Jim Terrier must survive.
