The Gunman is an underrated action movie from the director of Taken and Peppermint.

A lot of hate on Sean Penn from other reviewers. I would say most of that stems from being on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Because the writing wasn't any worse than any of the other cookie cutter Taken clones that have popped up in the last few years. Pretty gripping action, good fight scenes, and a decent cast rounds out a solid movie.

Going in I'll be honest I didn't know what to expect, normally I'm used to seeing Sean Penn in a drama, and he always seems to turn in a good performance, especially lately with his limited selective film roles, but with The Gunman he's placed in the lead action star role. The good news is he is successful, he acts and is believable as the mercenary he portrays. The plot is fairly original, the end climax seems a bit lackluster but thats just my own personal opinion considering the first half of the film is pretty strong. The direction and actors are all credible and well executed. This isn't Penn's best work but as a action film that could easily be missed or looked over this is one that should be given a shot.
