Only reason I give it 3 stars is due to the nice artwork in the steelbooks. I think these movies ruined the story of the Hobbit. What a cgi mess as well. HUGE step down from Lord of the Rings. Not even close

The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy [Extended/Theatrical] [SteelBook] [4K Ultra HD Blu-ray] is one of the best collections I have purchased. The case came slighlty dinged but that can be expected. I have yet to ask Best Buy for a compensation for the dings but maybe if they read this they might add a $10 gift card to my account or something! Hehe. Thank you though regardless Best Buy, what an AMAZING exclusive.

Haven't watched them yet but the art works and steelbooks are super cool. I did have a small dent in the tin case that houses the three steelbooks. It was in a spot i will probably never see it so i didn't bother returning.

Anybody who’s a fan of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ owns the films in some form or another and complained about its prequel trilogy ‘The Hobbit.’ Whether you own it or not, the 4K remastering of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ was done to match ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy and make all six films feel cohesive visually and audibly. So this set may seem unnecessary to most. As an owner of it now, I can say it is not for everyone. However, whether this is your first set or just an update to what you already have (if you bothered with this trilogy), I hope there’s something new and exciting for you. I purchased this set alongside the matching ‘The Lord of the Rings’ set, so my overall opinion is generally the same.
First off, let’s get to the not-so-fun stuff. Yes, it is expensive. It’s a steelbook set, and that is to be expected. Unlike ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ I only had the extended editions of ‘The Hobbit’ on a 9-disc Blu-ray set. I only got it to match the 15-disc ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Blu-ray set. Both of which had the appendices. So this 4K set is basically just those movies but in better quality minus the special features. However, I believe Park Road Post did this on purpose, assuming most fans already had these special features. Whether or not they did, it’s still a 6-disc steelbook box set that contains both theatrical and extended editions.
Now that that’s over, let’s get into the more fun stuff. I’ve been back and forth with Best Buy’s exclusive steelbooks. Love some, hate others. But I honestly love these designs, and they match ‘The Lord of the Rings’ set that goes with it (which I also purchased). The remastered versions themselves are fine. Peter Jackson didn’t “George Lucas” this edition of ‘The Hobbit.’ He touched it up to make both trilogies feel consistent altogether because of the newer technology that was available at the time of ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy’s creation. The digital copies of both the theatrical and extended editions were a nice touch, as I am one of a few people I know that has a player capable of playing 4K Blu-ray discs.
The biggest issue I have with my purchase is it came damaged. I blame Best Buy on that part. Everything I have purchased from them online in the last couple years have come in cheap, thin bubble wrap instead of hard, cardboard boxes. Yes, I received the package within a couple days, but I would rather wait longer if that kept my package from getting damaged in shipping. Now my favorite boxed film set is forever dented because Best Buy does not box their items like Amazon does.
Overall, this set is pretty good, even with redesigned packaging. It may be expensive despite not having special features but it is newly remastered and contains both editions of each film. The damaging in shipping is the biggest warning I have to those who are looking at purchasing this otherwise amazing set, same with the matching 'The Lord of the Rings' set.

And I thought the Lord of the Rings trilogy was something before, but this prequel that happened before that trilogy is just as surprising, intense, fierce, magical, stunning and so much more, starting with this one. I'm extremely compelled and astonished by all that Bilbo went through in this beginning of his first adventure, it's like you can see where Frodo got his feeling of adventure when Lord of the Rings came around. Out of all the dwarves in this film my absolute favorites are Fili and his brother Kili since not only are they rather adorable and sweet but they're also super brave, they have strong hearts and no fear like the others do, they also know how to make the best out of any situation whether it involves fighting or not. My sister's favorite in the company is Thorin Oakenshield probably because he kind of resembles her, he's got a bit of an attitude and he sometimes is rather uptight, but he's also very good looking and he definitely knows how to treat the ones closest to him whether it's friends or family. It's also no surprise to me that Bilbo discovers the One Ring in this one, I guess you could say that it sets up the very thing that began before the 60 year timeline that happened after Bilbo found the Ring and before it was passed on to Frodo against Bilbo's better judgment. All in all this film is beyond wonderful and captivating, the musical scores, the languages, the familiar faces from Lord of the Rings, the way the story itself begins and plays out so far in this film, everything. Even the truth of how the One Ring really landed into Bilbo's possession, the truth of how he found the sword known as Sting before he gave it to Frodo, the reveal of the very blade that stabbed Frodo in the first film of Lord of the Rings and the background story behind it, the truth that revealed that the White wizard Saruman was originally on the good side before we see him in Lord of the Rings now working for the Enemy and the fact that he and Gandalf are not the only wizards out there, and not to mention the bond that Bilbo and Thorin were able to form after all they've been through so far in this film, it all begins to unfold the story of Bilbo's very first adventure in such a way that I myself can't really describe too much. If you're looking for another outstanding and intense fantasy adventure to get into like you probably have with Lord of the Rings than you've got to dive into the trilogy of The Hobbit, the story of how one rather young hobbit was willing to step outside of his comfortable and wonderful home and dare to risk it all for a company of sweet and incredible dwarves trying to take back their home that was taken from them so long ago. The Lord of the Rings is an adventure all by itself and also one of the greatest adventures that my family has ever had the pleasure of growing up with, but if you're looking for something that's just as intense and wonderful as that trilogy than The Hobbit is the next big and perfect adventure trilogy for you. It all really begins with An Unexpected Journey, a journey that you'll want to go on over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. I know I will!!!

I love all the art on these SteelBooks as well as the outer case. I love that the SteelBooks are separated by foam padding in the case so they don't rub up against each other. I love the fact that these contain both the theatrical and extended editions of the films in new 4K restorations. I don't love the fact that none of the previous special features are included—not even the commentary tracks from the extended editions. And I don't appreciate that all of these SteelBooks have a flat matte finish. It would have been so much better (and worth the inflated asking price over the standard editions) if they were glossy and/or had some kind of embossing/debossing.
Finally, I have to give a shout-out to the pack & ship team at Best Buy who prepared my order. After my Back to the Future 4K SteelBooks were sent to me in a large bubble mailer(!) I feared for the worst, but this set and the LOTR 4K SteelBooks were shipped together in a perfectly fitted box, and sent USPS Priority Mail. After reading so many horror stories of dented or even smashed up outer cases, I am delighted to report this set was almost absolutely pristine. There was a neat little cut on the spine of The Desolation of Smaug, but that happened well upstream of Best Buy's pack & ship process. While I normally wouldn't buy a SteelBook with a known imperfection like that, considering all the other positives regarding its condition (and its surprising scarcity!) I'm fine with it. Thank you guys, when you take care to package collector's items like this, you get fewer returns/refunds and more delighted customers.

The entertaining Prequel to The Lord Of The Rings

The Trilogy in 4k allows for a memorable audio and video experience in Dolby Vision. While the original Tolkien text is a single volume and not a trilogy the movie enhances the story line by drawing from other Tolkien books involving tales of Middle Earth. The three movies add more depth and complexity to a simpler tale as it was originally written by Tolkien. It essentially explains how the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins discovered the Ring that became the central theme for the Epic Fantasy Trilogy THE LORD OF THE RINGS,which was originally written in three volumes. The movie enhances the plot and drama set forth in the written version of the Hobitt as significantly expanded in the extended version. While not necessarily required, I recommend you watch the three movies in the Extended version of the Hobbit prior to watching the Extended version of The Lord Rings Trilogy in 4K which is a masterpiece. You are introduced to some of the main characters in The Lord Of The Rings. The graphics and audio in the Hobbit are superb. The Dragon is something to behold. The enhanced plot of The Hobbit is engaging and entertaining. It is a very enjoyable viewing and listening experience filled with suspense, adventure and even some humor.

Love the artwork. Love the steelbook casing. Love that they're not stacked in a way that promotes disc scratching. It's a pricey purchase when there are no extra's included but I'm okay with that. I watched the extra's once in the 9 years I had the DVD and then Blu-ray collectors edition. As many reviewers stated, these dent easily during shipping. I went into my store and they brought out four for me to compare after hearing my complaint. I ended up buying this and the LoTR set with no dents after waiting several months for restocking. If you're a Middle Earth fan, this is a required piece of the collection!

Beautifully realized set. The external steelbook art is amazing, different yet compelling. It's why I bought this set. The outer case that protects the steelbooks is also very nice. I really like the space BB builds into these to protect the steelbooks. It does eat storage space but I am willing to give that up to keep my steelbooks undamaged. The art inside is nice too. The video is amazing, the audio even better. Easily the best these movies will ever look. Criticisms of the movies themselves aside, (I really enjoy them but I see why some may have different opinions) this is an amazing treat. These are pretty enough to show off your system as reference quality disks. Be aware - They have only the 4k movies - virtually no special features. I knew this upfront so I was good with that. Worth buying.

Hobbit Trilogy 4K Steelbook

The studios did an amazing job with the audio and video upgrade to 4K for this trilogy release. The problem with this collectible release is the collectible case is made of low quality metal that is susceptible to dents if care is not properly taken. The housing interior that holds the steelbook is also quite flimsy. In addition to this, the poor level of commitment/service in ensuring that such a collectible piece is shipped appropriately packaged (sturdy box with bubblewrap & air packets) from the warehouse or Bestbuy store to a customer is alarming especially at the premium price point for this release. Warner Bros and Bestbuy have to do a better job in the distribution of collectible movies.

Amazing and beautiful set in steelbook form for all 3 Hobbit movies!
This set is strictly the 4K UHD set. There are no blu-rays in these since they were already released prior in extended versions and theatrical.
I have to note that anyone who buys these 4K sets will have to know there are NO Appendices in them.
Those special features discs were previously offered in the Extended Blu-ray sets. So, don't expect them in these 2 new sets offered.
I think they did only the 4K to keep the costs down overall on the package. It's quite expensive, regardless but beautifully done!
My new set and The Lord of the Rings arrived UNDENTED. I am grateful!
Highly recommended!
Picture Quality and Sound in 7.1 Dolby Atmos are incredible.

Like the LotR trilogy set this is a beautiful steelbook set. The 4k transfers are the best these films have looked and will probably look for some time.
Unfortunately many people have had these sets damaged in shipping. I personally received a damaged LotR set that I had to exchange. My Hobbit trilogy arrived fine.
But this is something folks should be aware of if ordering these sets online. Even the replacement lotr trilogy i got in store had a slight ding but it wasn't like the one I received in shipping that had the entire side caved in.

This review has two parts first the film itself and of course the packaging. For the films they are great transfers the HDR is beautiful and the new atmos track is great. But the steelbook packaging has been a bit of a distaster to say the least. When getting these shipped you had to be lucky. Either receiving these expensive sets in a basic bag or bubblewraped in a nice box. Either way your bound to find some issues like some scratches or bumps. It's too bad because its impossible to find perfect sets with the demand being what it is, so best of luck. the films are definitely worth it if you can find a set that isn't beat up too bad.
