I was recommended this film by a friend and definitely enjoyed it over-all. Top-notch acting with an excellent cast, especially with Benedict Cumberbatch portraying Alan Turing, in a more unusual story of cryptoanalysis during WW2.
While the film is brilliantly laid out and has excellent filmography, it is one of those films that pretends it is a "true story," which more accurately should be labeled as "sort of" or "loosely." Alan Turing was a real man, but in this film he is portrayed as somewhat Autistic with Asperberger's where he has difficulty understanding social situations.
The film also makes you think Cumberbatch's Turing built the Turing machine ("Christopher") on his own, but he was truly assisted by Gordon Welchman who is not in the film at all.
A 5 star film on its own, but a 3 or 4 five star film for taking too many liberties from a historical perspective. The historical inaccuracies of the character won't stop you from enjoying the film, but I do recommend reading about the real Alan Turing so you know what is real and what is not in this portrayal.

For a historical piece, this movie hits all the highpoints (and some of the lowpoints as well). The writing, even for the smaller characters, is excellent. The story line provides a good re-telling of history, and why we may not have been aware of Alan Turing and his contributions to the war efforts.
The video is near reference quality, and although the sound is very good, not quite reference quality for a Blu-ray. But that is understandable considering this is not a Michael Bay movie... The extras are very good, but shorter than I expected for this type of movie. I couldn't wait to pick this copy up and consider it a must-own for the library.

While not an artistic achievement or a film of extraordinary style, I enjoyed "The Imitation Game" as much as any film this year. It tells the true story of mathematician Alan Turing who tries to crack the German Enigma code during World War II with help from fellow mathematicians, and it intersperses the wartime events with scenes of Turing's early school life and the post-war tragic period leading to his death. An extraordinary story (one which had to be kept secret for decades for security reasons), it was well scripted to heighten its suspense and human drama, and beautifully filmed with powerful acting. I recommend this film highly.

I enjoyed watching this movie because it was based on a true story from the era of WWII. I like hearing about the ingenuity of people and how they overcame obstacles and in this case, a huge challenge. The movie focuses on a team of Brits trying to decipher the enigma code that the Germans used for communication. It showcases many struggles that they had to endure while their country was enveloped in fighting a war. Although I was never alive during that period, it's always neat to see a recreation of what life was like "back then". I believe it's a good story and one worth watching.

This WW II story begins before computers even existed but the earliest form of a computer like device would be needed to help break the German code and turn the tide of WW II in the favor of the Allies. The character development of the main player and the supporting cast excels at telling what transpired during the process of cracking the German Enigma machine. This film shows how genius, besides bullets and bombs, can overcome tyranny on a global level. This is one of the best movies of 2014. The Blu-ray has excellent AV quality.

The Imitation Game lives up to its reputation. It deserved to win Academy Awards, not just be nominated. I read the book when I first learned that Benedict Cumberbatch was to star in it. I found the movie to adhere closely to the book, except that you didn't need to be a mathematician to understand it. This film was especially meaningful to me because my late father was a comouter programmer during the Korean war. I am glad we are more enlightened today, but what a travesty for Turing's life to end as it did.

I had little knowledge of Alan Turing and his colleagues at first but when I saw the trailer for this film knew I wanted to see/buy it. In the film there is a quote: Sometimes it is the people who no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine. This is so true, the contribution Turing and his group made to history was immeasurable and brilliantly captured in this film.

I saw this movie in theaters and really enjoyed it then. Upon getting a great Black Friday deal on this film, I subsequently watched it at home. It was just as great as I remembered. The story is interesting, especially if you love movies about World War II, but different, since it contains no battle scenes. The acting is superb, especially from lead Benedict Cumberbatch; it was a shame he did not win an Oscar. Bottom line: any fan of adult dramas will immensely enjoy this film.

if this is the age of political correctness then this film is a power house of GOODWILL. First lest me say the acting is top notch. Who would have known that a gay man with an IQ of 200 could have accomplished the things which take place in this film. It is both fascinating and sad at the same time. But without his zest for life the story would not have come to fruition. A MUST OWN for movie buffs who enjoy well crafted stories.

this film was just incredible. the actors did such a great job enticing us with information and ideas that might not reach a wide audience. The tech in computing, the theory, length ti takes to try new calcs and algorithms, the WWII interests, the love interests, and sensitivity to orientation and or recognition of a great mind no matter what. It was worth every penny and it still sits on my desk and is in my drive.

This movie shows the lengths at which the Allies went to to break the "unbreakable" Enigma Code during World War 2. The code had millions of combinations that were changed daily. Breaking the code shortened the war by years and helped the Allies defeat Germany. But also this movie tells the story of the man who created the code breaking machine and also goes into his back ground to find out he was hiding a secret of his own.

This is certainly 2014's best film, sorry Birdman. Centering around Alan Turing, and his work performed during WW2, this incredibly captivating film is a must see for everyone from computer science and engineering majors to people whom would like to know how the second world war was really won. The movie is filled with a great cast, great performances, and this is arguably Benedict Cumberbatch's best performance.

My husband and I saw this in theaters. It was one of the best movies we have seen in a long time. I am told there are some historical inaccuracies in it, but I bet that is true of most Hollywood-ized 'true stories'. Overall, if you haven't heard of Alan Turing and are not aware of the contribution he made to the Allied victory in WWII, this movie well is worth your time. The movie is about the Enigma code.

This movie is awesome and reminds us of a very important part of our history. It's a must-watch, especially for high school students who don't have a clue what life was like when people talked to each other instead of texting all the time. The acting is superb and the script is right-on. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars? The writers messed up big time in one spot: They have an investigator using - are you ready for this? - White-out on a document and it's the early '50's. It's the same mistake they made in "The Help" when the year was 1963. I was an executive secretary in 1965 and the stuff hadn't been invented yet. Give me a break.

I watched this film with interest because I'm a WWII buff and I wanted to see how they were going to depict the main character in the movie. I did not know of the personal history of the character, but was definitely surprised about his struggle for achievement; especially when trying to help win a war. He was actually fighting two wars. This movie is pretty true to history and is a must see.

This film is a triumph of writing, directing, and acting. They don't blow things up or crash automobiles, but if you crave excellent drama, watch this one. Cumberbatch (Spellcheck tells me there is no such word) and Knightley are just excellent. The story is about the father of computers and how being different is so astounding, necessary and, sadly, destructive. I can't recommend it enough!

As a Computer Science major in college, I learned about Alan Turing - his code-breaking machine and his famous Turing test for artificial intelligence. However, this movie gives you much more about the man than I ever knew. Of course, as with all movies of this type, it is a mix of facts and Hollywood dramatics, but I think his genius as well as his tortured life were brilliantly portrayed.
