This movie isn’t as good as the original short, you might prefer to get the combo pack if you don’t already have the first , but it is done in that classic artistic style that made the other one so good and the bonus feature is a documentary about the original.
I would recommend this to a friend

The Snowman is a short, classic Christmas movie, set to music, about a boy who builds a snowman that comes to life. Together, they go on a magical, midnight adventure. The snowman explores the boy’s world with him and then flies him to his home in the North Pole. The animation is hand drawn and that makes all the graphics look cool. It is based on the book by Raymond Briggs.
There is lots of music in this film which I really like. Whenever they play a piece of music, it really fits in with what is happening in that scene. For example, when they fly over the entire world, the music playing is “Walking in the Air,” which is about how someone is flying around and looking down at everyone and that is exactly what they are doing. Some of the music is very dramatic. For example, when the boy and the snowman are sneaking around the boy’s parent’s bedroom hunting for clothes for the Snowman to wear the music adds to the atmosphere of the scene.
My favorite characters are the reindeer. I like them because they are the only ones that look surprised that a boy would be in the North Pole in his pajamas. When the boy approaches them, their faces show that they are thinking, “What is going on? Why is this boy here?” But they let him stroke them peacefully. My favorite scene is when all the snowmen and the boy are dancing, and he dances with a snowman that looks like a cowboy. I like this because, during that part, instead of dancing around like everyone else, they have a pretend stand-off. I found this hilarious. The message of this movie is that with every good friendship there is a gift and that sometimes it is hard to say goodbye.
This DVD, which celeberates the 40th anniversary of this film’s release, includes an introduction by the author, Raymond Briggs, who tells the story of how he got the idea for the book and an alternate introduction by David Bowie who tells how much he loves the movie.
I rate this movie 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 8. I think adults will enjoy watching it too. Reviewed by Clayton P., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic.
